The worst instant messenger ever.

I can't understand why people use a messenger with this much problems.

The protocol is problemmatic for ages. It even crashes for days long.

The interface is not anything special.

But people keep using it probably on the fact that it is annoyingly installed on every Windows machine.

If Microsoft should be sued on any basis, it should be because of MSN messenger.

Btw I use the protocol via Miranda.

I've used Msn for awhile now after my disappointment in Trillian but this recent build corrupted my install shield(gave me some 1609 error) and I got it from MSN's site. I've seen that some people have had the same problem whith the lastest Defender release too. Reinstalling Install shield didn't work so I had to reinstall my OS with an image I saved(which is not pirated a copy). Needless to say I'm not happy with this piece of sh8. ICQ used to be my favorite but not enough people use it. The features offered for FREE by most other IM are worth trying them instead. Maybe MS is just going to buy one that gets really popular like all the sh8 companies do that can't make good in house products.(Symantec,EA etc..)

Trillion of flies eat s***! if they like it, you 2!
MSN Messenger is the worst IM in the world (only comparable with Jabber but no M$).
Don't have offline messages (ICQ have it for years)
Don't have answering machine (Yahoo have it!)
Dynamic Avatars (Meegos) are not free (Yahoo have free animated avatar!)
Don't have message encritpion (ICQ yes!)

BUT it's M$ almost bundled with every windows version (a trimmed version that push to you to upgrade)

Switch to Y! Msgr more better 1Gb WebMail, Free Blog (Y! 360), Unlimited Photo site, Free Briefcase, Free customized Radio. You need more reasons!?!? ask me!

Strange i tried to update via the normal MSN Messenger page and that is still 7.5.0322 Anyway i personally feel this is the best IM client going, you could use trillian et al but people i know who are using thoose are always getting it crash out. This just works and thats all that matters.

I'd give it a 4 except for wanting balance the anti-MS crowd.

Yahoo and ICQ are ok I guess. But you won't find me or those I know on their systems.

MSN has the largest userbase going.

Less intrusive.

Beats the others cold.

Offline messages? Isn't that also called 'EMail"?

I dont know why people use msn messenger in the first place. yahoo and icq are MUCH better in terms of user interface and features. The offline messages feature is a VERY important feature and its the reason why i never used msn. And please dont say its coming in msn 8 becasue yahoo and icq had it for ages and we are now reviewing this version not the upcoming one. This deserves a 1 for offering nothing special compared to other options.

Offline messaging in gonna be in WLM 8, big Deal, Yahoo! Messenger had it for years!!!

Unless they offer a version with a slimmed down User Interface, I'm sticking with Windows Messeneger.

I can't wait for Yahoo! Messenger to release a MSN chat compatible client. Sick of people forcing me to use MSN services.

THIS SITE NO LONGER LINKS TO MSN MESSENGER.

IT LINKS TO "LIVE MESSENGER."

If you still want MSN Messenger, look for MSN Messenger 7.5 v324 which may be the last version. You'll need to google for it as some links may be defaulting to the new Live Messenger.

There's also a way to get rid of ads called "Cleanmessenger" or go to www.mess.be

I went back to MSN Messenger from the Live version mainly because I didn't like the interface and I'm happy with the current functions. (also I know how to remove the ads in MSN Messenger) However, once a nicer skin and a way to modify Live comes along I'll switch to Live Messenger.

wether I like this program or not has little to do with the rating I am supposed to give it. considering the fact that millions of people use it and to a certain satisfaction, must have a significant meaning. the program works well, you can chat, have real-life audio conversations, real life video conversations, access your mail from within t, send (small) files, try to be funny (nudges, animated greetings etc. etc) and a fact is it all works pretty much alright. would comparing it to other programs and judging it by personal favoratism help any in revieuwing it ?

Funny considering GAIM 2.0 is kinda bulky as it is. 20 megs to chat? palease.

How is this bloatware.
It's not even 10 Megs.
It can chat, send files, send voice clips, talk, video, remote control, games, and a sh*tload more.

Top that off with easy to install, easy to use (even passed the mom test). Has never crashed on me.

I do agree though, it would be nice to send a IM to someone offline.

Perhaps it's bloated, but much of the bloat is easily tuneable to be quick and easy.

I noticed in this version MSN is giving informational hints on what features are available to both parties. kinda cool. But I'll turn it off. :)

A fine product devolved to bloated filth.

ONE star.

To those who say "million of people..." etc. I have but one thing to say:

Lot's of people buy iPods too.

Also, I'm not stupid enough to support adware.

Ergo:

There are a LOT of lemmings in this world.

I gave it a three because if the person you are trying to message is offline you have to email them through another microsoft product, Hotmail.

If I wanted an email Program I would have gone looking for one instead of a messenger.

ICQ all the way. It has all the same features and is just as secure. All is contained on a server and can send messages to offline users for when they logon to it.

They really need to release a new version. (not just upgrades to the current version)
The interface is outdated, the program's a memory hog and it includes tons of useless stuff.
Including a search bar (who searches from a messenger - not me), annoying ad bar, wrongly sized message backgrounds (800x600 not 1024x768 so they look pixelated where they're stretched)
In fact the only good things this program has going for it are:
-Emoticons and the ability to include your own custom emoticons.
-the fact that my friends use it

If I didn't have friends who used it, I'd probably be using Yahoo which is much better than this.

In this new version I'm hoping they've fixed those stupid random connection errors - only time will tell I guess.

Their lack of support for older Windows OS is ridiculous.
How exactly am I supposed to upgrade a 60MB RAM computer to Windows XP??? It's a technical impossibility - and I tried it!
Luckily I have a new computer but not everyone has a computer good enough (and fast enough) for Windows XP.

MSN messenger sucks !!!! big time .... Yahoo is better ... also the MSN messenger for Macintosh is very pathetic as it does not have Voice chat or Video chat ... I feel Microsoft should develop better MSN messenger for Windows / Macintosh OS X / Linux operating systems with the same enhanced features so that people can use MSN in all Operating systems which would bring people closer together .....

If you simply want to get rid of winks, nudges, and all the "cutesyness", go to www.msgs*it.com. Fill the asterisk in with an h, if you cant figure that out. lol

Look for a program called A-Patch and run it on a clean install of MSN messenger. Keeps all the features you want, and gets rid of all the useless features you dont want.

Why resist change? It is inevitable. If you don't like it, don't use it. Winks and nudges are something other users have been asking for in one form or another for a very long time.
I'll rate your post a 1 for shallowness and resistance to change. The product though, I'll rate it a 5 because of the innovation and "cutesyness".

The best of the stand-alone messenger apps... much better than AIM and Yahoo. On the other hand, if you need to connect to multiple services with one app, I suggest looking into Trillian.

MSN Messenger offers features and functionality that a majority of their users enjoy. If I sat here bashing it and called it bloated because it offers webcam and voicechat functions and because I don't use them (I have neither a webcam nor a microphone), the I'd be a complete imbecile to overlook the many users who do use those features.

Sure, you have to pay attention (a hard thing to do in this day and age of ADHD-laden society) to the setup prompts and deselect any optional things you don't want. Sure, you have to put up with a few minor ads (or use something like Mess.Patch from Mess.be to eliminate them), but so what? I'd rather cope with an a few minor ads than pay a fee to talk to my friends.

The other reviewers are entitled to their opinions, and so are you... but you're also entitled to look bad by bashing a product you don't like without providing useful feedback.

XP is bloatfree, and if you don't like the interface or something like that, you can turn it back to classic mode. XP is more secure and is having Vista technology backported to it. I don't see that happening for 2000, why, because by todays standards, it sucks.

probably because most windows 2000 users know better. they like fast, bloatfree, well written applications and wouldn't choose this over any of the alternatives.

Like a pervious user already commented on, this program is worth s*** without the MSN Messenger patcher from www.mess.be/

Without stripping MSN of all it's useless ad banner and advertising crap, MSN Messenger v7.5 takes a whopping 30mb of residental ram.

That is absurd for any instant messenger to take, MSN is slowly getting worse, but thank god for patchers!

Taking all the crap out with www.mess.be patch, brings the running footprint of MSN v7.5 down to a bearable 16mb, which is about the same as v6.0 took and 6mb less then the latest Yahoo Messenger client, so i'm happy with this result.

A word of warning, do not run MSN Messenger v7.5 without the patch, it's just not worth it!

I would like to go back to 6.1 but i cant, it just says i have to upgarde to use msn, and 6.1 was the last working msn messenger that microsoft released, after that it has been problems. 7.0 has some problems with sertain types of NAT firewalls, and 7.5 for som strange reason i cant recive or send files, it starts the transfer but never send or recive a single byte.
So i'm using trillian and google talk, they are now the winners, and it seems that microsoft is loosing the IM race.

Subject: SR#1-736362401 - MSN Text Message Query

Dear Sir/Madam

In regards to your question of:

“I would like to know why it is that we advertise FREE Text messages, yet in the UK every time he tries to send a text message from a PC he is told that he has to pay to send texts from it to a friend’s mobile phone. It’s the latest msn ,m 7.5”

There are two different types of MSN mobile offerings – we offer MSN Mobile service, which is free in the sense that we don’t charge to send messages through our service (the networks do though).

The other service is the Messenger stand alone option. This requires a pre purchase of text credits. On this deal, the Networks take do not impose their charge.

We don’t say “free text messages” on any of the Messenger stand alone options.

If you have any further queries please feel free to contact me and I can put you through to our in-house expert Jeffrey Davison.

Yours faithfully,

Ben Bourne

i dunno what the big deal is with everyone giving msn mess a bad score, it works great for what it is and for people to say its "bloated" dont use it, remember there is Windows mess witch has the complete basics, for those who say its "buggy" all software is to a point so get over it, or just maybe its not the msn mess but maybe all that spyware junk thats already on your pc. Use it or dont use it but stop complaining!

EDIT
from Mess.be
.... But I received a few remarks from people who tried to download MSN Messenger 7.5.0299 and got stuck with a previous version. That's because from version 7.5 on, MSN Messenger is Windows XP-only, confirming a rumor from last month. If you own a different version of the Windows operating system, you will have to keep using MSN Messenger 7.0.0816.

Dude dont you think you are giving too much to Google talk provided that it was released today?

Google Talk deals with a different group/network. Seriously speaking comparing 2 different IM progs dont make any sense. There are advantages/disadvantages to both ( I do run yahoo/msn/skype and google talk).

What some people call bloat may be a feature to some one else, hence rate a program on its merit not comparing with some other.

I personally feel (other than the ad part..) the MSN messenger is doing pretty good specially features like dynamic background and Nudges are nice features :). Clubbing it with add ons like PLUS .. doing pretty nice :)

the comments I've read for this app are just a bunch of MS hate. Like most hate, it comes from ignorance and from manipulation.

The program works great. It has less "bloat" than any of the major competitors in IM apps (AIM, Yahoo, ICQ). It's free, and if you don't like it, you don't have to use it! Despite that, hundreds of millions of people use this app around the world and it has a rating of 4 out of 5 stars here on betanews even though the people who left these hateful and deceptive comments each only gave 1 out of 5 stars.

Wow, these reviews are really unfair. You're all just Microsoft bashing! What the hell is wrong with it? Every messenger program is getting stuffed with odd and silly features, as well as new and useful ones, but they don't get complained about for being bloated!

Personally, I don't like coloured backgrounds, or 'bingbong' sounds, or the animated window crap that yahoo messenger includes, but I'm not saying that other people don't appreciate them.

This messenger is a decent program, and because it's Microsoft, has a large base of users through it's .NET passport service, which makes it easy to get going with if you've already signed up for hotmail or something.

This program works very well under XP, and really question the veracity of some of the prior negative postings. I have personally noticed a major improvement in echo cancellation over prior versions. It is a decent program save for the commercial nature of the client.

I will acknowledge that MSN like competitors Yahoo and AOL add a commercial aspect to their service. This can be easily remedied by running a-patch (which supports the current build), or waiting for mess.be patch. However, this shortcoming doesn't take away from the quality of the service or client.

Bloat is a relative aspect, and therefore very subjective. One person may see anything beyond text messaging and file transfer is bloat. Another person may see video conferencing and spaces as a desirable "feature."

The aggressive commercial aspect of MSN Messenger is just that -- captialism at its finest. However, commercialism alone does not make a client "bloat." To make a point, I used to religously use ICQ until about 2001. The client was clunky, cumbersome and unintuitive packed with useless features that distracted me albeit it had a small footprint. Is that bloat?

The program is decent for what it does, and you cannot get something for nothing (e.g. mass popular vid conferencing). You still don't think it's fair? Switch to an alternative client? Still need to MS hate? Stick with some obscure IM service and try your best to convince your friends how good it is but quit your b****in!

rating this as very low as it's real buggy. I installed this version and when I try to log in to my account it changes my log in name to my name it shows to ppl and doesn't connect. This version is total crap.

this is the third time I have tried different versions of 7.5 and all are pure garbage

hehehehehehehehe why would u even think google releasing chat software would even have anything to do with using MSN messneger, which has been around since the begining and keeps getting better and better..i mean why have more than 1 person left absolultely retarted comments mentioning the word "google" i mean who cares what or when they release chat software..ugh

msn messenger the best! well, yahoo messenger is the best, but msn for what it is takes the lead.

I've always used MSN Messenger.

It's so simple to use, has some great features and is the only messenger you'll ever need!

I personally just don't get all the hype with this Google Talk - it's just another IM program that we DON'T need. Like someone said above, MSN has a large user base becuase of the .Net Passport System and you can use non-hotmail address as well (my friend used his @btinternet.com address for a while), with google talk you can only use GMAIL (correct me if i'm wrong)

The simple fact that you can't easily change people's contact names is a big minus for me. While I watch for security updates in this program since the kid uses it, I don't use it myself all that often. Like the other main IMs out there, it's become bloated with ads (yeah the mess.be patch comes in handy to kill a lot of it) and other useless 'features'. I'll stick to trillian myself since I have friends and family that use aol, yahoo, msn, icq.

I'm sad to see MSN Messenger yet another Microsoft product worsening with time... The file transfer service is very unstable and laggy, even over broadband... The voice function is getting on my nerves these days. Why? Is Microsoft so unable to make a better messenger with better file transfer with upload then download or direct connection feature? Quite a lot of errors are preventing login at sometimes... Don't tell me this is happening MSN Messenger is everyone's loved masterpiece it will be very sad to see it go...

I don't use these kinds of programs much, but I have to try this because of all the varying scores and reviews. One thing though. What else would you suggest for an IM client? I can think of a few. But this program is pretty good and I don't think it deserves such harsh remarks.
BTW - gave this a 4 because I don't have much use for this program.

Whats new in this? Anyways as for a review, this program needs a couple of things:
- A built in polygamy patch
- Less memory footprint
- Better contact management
- Opacity control
- Better error handling (eg. when internet isnt connected it should tell u that, not "Error Code "XXXX"")
- tabbed messaging
- a couple other things

So, what's new in this build?

By the way, MSN Messenger + Mess Patch= Perfect.
It's fully customizable, you can add/remove everything. The only flaw I find in MSN Messenger is the inability to talk while you're signed as Offline, as you can in ICQ's Invisible mode.

I agree with similacrum, while I use Linux 90% of the time, I use Windows for some things. MSN Messenger being one of the things I use while I'm booted into XP. MSN Messenger is great and free. And for the people saying bloated and advertisement spam, it is obvious you have not used your brain to check the Settings > General section to disable the "Display MSN Today.." on start of the program. You can disable it and the tiny advertise in the lower portion of the application itself is hardly noticeable. Actually I rarely notice it, until you mentioned it just now ..

Not only that, but bloated, with what exactly? You can disable pretty much everything in the program, even the custom tabs. And on install you can choose not to install things such as toolbar, or set the homepage, ect.. The only way it becomes bloated is if you add MSN Plus to it with a ton of plugins or start installing a ton of Winks/Emotions/Pictures.

By far MSN Messenger regardless of being made my MS is better than Yahoo, ICQ, ect.. (Ya my Free Opinion)

And to argue my point a bit more, exactly when has Yahoo or ICQ not been bloated with needless features? Or Advertisements for that matter.

Don't like it, don't use it, but don't hate it because you hate MS.

// Regards
Crypton

hear me now you **** ms haters.....msn messenger is not a masterpiece programming but it is surely acceptable. there are some really unfair "reviews". if you don't like the tabs you can just close it, if you don't want to see advertisement without your permission....you can just cut your connection with all of the "civilized" world because we are living in the 21st century and there is no turning back... it's inevitable to see ads everywhere and believe me it's gonna be a lot worse
and by the way msn messenger is free and it is better than icq, yahoo messenger and aol messenger, miranda is a different concept...finally i give 4 points to msn messenger and 1 point to the lamers because i can't give 0

Yeah this program is bloated but I keep it installed for the kids, they like it even though I keep it 'tweaked' with an app from mess.be. Personally, all I need is a an IM to send text without the bloated options which is why I use Miranda.

Can not change user name (most of them has silly and sometimes offensive names). Too much icons, animations, shaking screen (?!?), all those effects are bloated and distracting. May be good for kids under 10. Microsoft again resorts to its unfair practice to impose its software. Yahoo Messenger is much better.

Version 7 doesn't include many really important features for me (except fragment of last discussion in message window, I don't find other additions particularly useful), but it looks much more polished than version 6.2. What is important, memory footprint is NOT increased and new features does not interfere with old ways of doing things, so I would not call it bloatware as other people here do.

the only problem i've found with it so far is my F secure firewall won't let me sign in tried a few different setting still got to hit allow all traffic till im signed in then set it back to normal just a good thing i got norton running to so im not complely at risk when signing in.

I hate it. I have loved every version of MSN messenger, but I will never pay for any features on an IM client. Ever. This crap product now wants to install toolbars, crappy search bars, etc. Why can't a piece of software just serve a single function, and do that very well, like the old winamp? Like firefox without extensions? Is there a way to turn this off so that I never get prompted for any feature I might have to pay for? /me looks for other apps.

GoodThings2Life Apr 6, 2005 7.0 Final Build 777

MSN Messenger remains the best of the Top 3 against AIM and Yahoo.

The simple, yet well-featured program continues to improve on a good thing by adding in "Personalized Status" modes, Contact Cards that link to their Spaces blog, improved webcam/audio capabilities, and a useful feature called Nudges that shakes the window and generates an alarm sound to catch a person's attention.

Granted, the "Winks" and "Packs" features will satisfy some with its "cute" factor, but it is somewhat of an impractical feature for those of us with more sophisticated needs.

All the other features-- Backgrounds, Display Pictures, and the MP3 Playlist display can be turned off via options, so those of us who want the "sleek", simple interface can have it.

My only real gripe is that the "Actions Pane" (Add a Contact & Search" cannot be turned off/hidden on the main list window.

Overall... a great program-- it can be sleeked/dumbed down to show just the stuff we need, or we can use it all. The two indidivuals who complain about bloatware are welcome to use whatever they feel works for them and let the rest of us use the best IM client around.

Well the new features like "now playing" and the flash animations are some kind of cool, but i don`t like that you can`t modify the advertising and configure your own register list on the left side (only moving up and down of the icons is possible)

Also "dangerous" these links leading to commercial icons, animations, themes ... If you have kids it`s easy to slip into the money trap ...

And thanks to MCM .. the hint for this great tool ... FITS my NEEDS ;-)

I really like it, despite the addition of the "Winks" (which I will never use) and other so-called "bloatware" (most of which I just turn off/disable/don't use/ignore). This is a beta, afterall, so I expected a lot of the bugs to be present.

MSN Messenger, however, is definitely the best IM client of the 4 major networks (AOL, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo). Unless you need to use Trilian for all networks, I would highly recommend MSN over the others.

With regards rbrewer420 comments on the 18th November 'There are no ads' Please do this community a favour, look at the programme. By default there are ads displayed under the search bar (Which is at the bottom of the main programme window)If you have Ad blocking software this may hide the Ad or Ad window, but for the majority of users who don't have Ad blocking - the Ad's are annoying. The only thing this programme requires is the Ad's removed by Microsoft.

The winks are great, and handwriting too but requires journal viewer. It does have alot of extra stuff that isn't all that needed. Such as msn today, and beta tag, and the ad and search bars, but nuthing a good patch can't take care of.

Great update! Finally Microsoft added scroll buttons for the tabs, it was startin to get too long to see them all in Australian accounts. Handwrite, Winks and Nudge features are cool. You can also have your own customized animated emoticons. Audio and Webcam seem to work with no problems through my firewall and router now :D

This thing is awesome. There are no ads. What you are seeing up top is the person's display picture. (Previous Windows Messenger users may not recognize it, but with MSN Messenger you can select a display picture, much like an AIM icon, but any picture you want.)

There's an "MSN today" window, like that of MS's competition, but simply turn it off. The handwriting tool is fun to play with (whiteboard with sessions), and it has all the previous utilities of 6.2, with more stuff for users to play with. (I say "play" because they are for more goofing around, like the nudge (compare: yahoo messenger), the bouncing eyes, etc). More things to express yourself with.

A+ update.

I gave it up to search for any screenshots of the application on the messenger.msn website. The application itself is not freeware, but free to use since it is adware (popup and banner) as you can see on the screenshot on this page. I for myself use only the msn-protocol with miranda-im or argile messenger.

well...I have to say I'm boredring on saying screw you to yahoo. messenger 6.0 has been a disaster - the webcam capabilities suck, launchcast hardly ever launches, and now...get this...the wonderful miracle that is MSN messenger has come to the forefront and into its own. the messenger 5.0 series was a joke, and then when they released the 6.0 series, I was still somewhat weary; then my friend put me on to mess.be, told me to download the beta for the 7.0 series, and all I have to say is wow. Fine, you have to pay for things, but nothings free in this world; the webcam functions are so much better, they've added a radio feature that could conceivably rival anything out there if they spruce it up a little bit - it really is so much more versatile. Well done microsoft, keep this up and you may well justify my loyalty.

You don't need a hotmail account to use MSN Messenger. What you need is a Passport account (www.passport.com), where you can sign-in with any valid email account that you own.

I dislike Microsoft. I do not like their deceptive practices or their bloated, buggy, and usually overpriced software.

Despite this bias, I do not mind MSN Messenger. It is free, efficient, and intuitive. I'd rather use MSN Messenger than the mostly bloated clients from AOL, ICQ, and Yahoo.

I dislike requiring a Hotmail account to use MSN Messenger. I would rather use a different address, especially considering it is next to impossible to find a good hotmail address that isn't already taken.

With all that being said, I rarely use MSN Messenger. My default client is Trillian Pro, a intuitive and efficient program that supports MSN, AOL, ICQ, and Yahoo simultaneously. Trillian Pro's only drawback is that it isn't free.

msn is good, great, simple to use with no useless or hardly used features, most of the features on it are used everyday and all the time, unlike other messengers with so many features that people get annoyed of. this is probably why everyone moved from icq to msn. for people above who don't like msn just use what you like, why are you insulting it, it's free so if u no like it shhh, i didn't do jack for it ... msn rules!

To Dapple, what you say is contradictory... How can it be bloatware if it doesn't have all the extra features that other messengers shove down our throats?

MSN Messenger is the easiest to use and has the most relevant features without without forcing crapware down our throats.

Although it's fantastic as is, coupled with Messenger Plus! it is the best Messenger on the Internet... much better than AIM or Yahoo.

Msn just keeps getting better and better. Custom away, would make this client better then all other primary instant messengers.Note the word primary, ICQ is not a primary messenger, look at all the s*** they offer that has absolutely nothing to do with messenging. Yahoo, and MSN, and AOL are primary messengers, because inside the prog there not trying to shove s***y webspace, or stupid dating crap down our throughts. Msn messenger beats aim and ICQ because it's not as anoying at startup as ICQ, or as memory hogging as AIM

Why would you need offline messages? Instant messages are for talking with people that are currently online, or at least that was the main point of the idea when it was created. If you need to send an offline message, send an e-mail. It's not hard.

MSN Messenger only lacks in one area as far as I'm concerned, custom away messages. Though it doesn't matter to me as much, the rest of the messenger makes up for it.

I have used msn messenger for a very long time. Past releases have been ok. But since 6.0 I have really liked it. Lot's of cool features, fast to load and you can turn off that pesky pop up window that comes up.

The thing that does really bother me about msn messenger is the fact that you can't customize away messages, like with prtty much every other IM client. You can use messenger plus but with it's reputation I think I wouldn't reccomend it at all.

UPNP is not a formalized approved standard, and MS has all but given up on it ever since the huge security holes first first discovered upon Windows XP's release. However file transfers are an issue and won't be solved easily with NAT borders being the biggest problem.

Having said that, this IM client is non-intrusive, reliable, uses little resources, and it doesn't bug the crap out me when I install it on a new system. Other IM clients require a lot of handholding, and I'm happy that I only need a few tweaks to get this one where I want it. I've moved from ICQ many years ago, and don't miss it a bit. My complaints are it's not corporate "friendly" and it does go down for maintenance at inopportune times.

There is no denying this is a quality communications client.

This is an overall GREAT program, and with the use of MSN PLUS! it makes up for most of the stated lacking features, like invisible/offline login and amount of default text that can be typed in.

My rating is due completely to the fact that M$ has choosen to deploy this product, in fact the only out there that I know of using UPnP, but this very thing in fact makes it so un-reliable in file transfers and voice connections.

They have provided no tool to diagnose the UPnP/Router connection issues, or ways to configure your system to resolve, so in the end, you are left with a handicapped product, that is short one, but MAJOR step away from GREATNESS.

It's not quite as good as the newest yahoo messenger, but it is still a great messenger. The only reason im not giving it a 5 is because msn has a pretty strict char. limit for pasting text, and also msn server sometimes goes down whereas my other messenger (yahoo) stays up 99.9% of the time...

TheWolf19xx,

I don't quite...understand your point of view. Why exactly would I want to send AN INSTANT MESSAGE (A.K.A) "A message that the person receives on the other end 'INSTANTLY'"...offline? For that we use E-MAIL, which is Electronically sent MAIL which they can view the next time they are online.

I don't mean to sound mean with this but, these are the kind of comments that urk me, and then you're rating the program down when there's nothing wrong with it.

This is the worst load of wasted Garbage anybody has ever made. Why would anybody use a program that can't send a message to a contact who is offline without sending an email. If I want an email program I would use one. I use ICQ which can send to an offline user and when they come on they get it and can send back to you offline. Not everyone is online at the same time.

Even beyond it's bloatedness and tons of useless "features", I wouldn't use an IM client that only connects to one network on principle - AND because it would be really inconvenient. I use the free Trillian 0.74f which connects to MSN, Yahoo, AIM and ICQ - but I'm sure there are even newer even better solutions out there.

Respectfully...
To the best of my knowledge, WINDOWS Messenger comes with Windows XP... not MSN Messenger.
While the two programs are mostly compatible, they are not exactly the same.
Windows Messenger has one extremely useful feature that it supports -- Remote Assistance.
The integration of this feature allows me to maintain PCs for several friends and relatives that live at some distance from me.
Messenger does have the ability to leave messages for users that are offline in the form of an email. It creates an email automatically when you double-click on an offline user's icon.
Also note:
I am currently running Windows Messenger and Miranda IM.
These two IM client processes are currently using (at idle):
MSMSGS.EXE ......8,760K
MIRANDA32.EXE ...12,984K

I also find the pop-up notifications extremely useful while I'm fullscreen gaming as well as some really great features added with the MessengerPlus! addon.

Otherwise i suggest you stick to an older or different client

Mostly this version works fine. I did, however, find an annoying little bug. Under the "Privacy" tab, one can exclude "All others" from your contact list. Whilst 6.1 will maintain this setting for the entire current session, it doesn't store this setting and it reverts to it's previous state when one restarts Messenger.
I like the new graphics capabilities, as do many others that I've spoken to.

Thats some nice sensationalism. What that EULA actually says is not "if we want to charge you have to give us money", but "if we want to charge you have to give us money if you want to keep using it, because we're going to shut down the free stuff".

Anyway... I'm not sure what is actually new in this version, except that it detects my Linksys NAT Router quite happily. My camcorder hasn't worked properly in any version of Messenger 6, still have to use 5 or Windows Messenger for that. (thats where it gets the rating of 3)

I've got mixed opinions on this update from the 4x series to the new 5x series. Microsoft have now included new sounds, which is very useful in a instant messenger product, especially when you can actually hear other user's go offline instead of chatting to yourself for 5 mins before you notice their gone. The new visual appearence is very pleasing to the eye, but to jump from such a simplistic GUI to a eye candy resource consuming one is a very bad step. Especially for older computers, which most families still have, and these type of products are aimed at families as part of their user database right? The other problem i have with this new msn is the inability to remove the tabs, i don't need them, i don't want them, and they take up room on the messenger i can use to fit people's user names in :(. I hope someone makes a hack so i can remove them, i've checked in options, i can't do it. The best part of this new release, is Microsoft have FINALLY and i mean FINALLY, added NAT/Firewall support! YES! I've been waiting for this for amost a year! Yahoo Messenger has had this since day one, it took Microsoft so long, i pitty them. Never the less, the support has finally arrived, and i can now use voice chat and send files :). I'll be staying with this update until i change isp, which should be in feb next year when my 1 year contract runs out. I will move to a isp that does not feature a hardware firewall (NAT), thus i can switch back to the non-nat supported v4.7, which i love to bits because of it's simplisity, and the fact it's faster and less resource taking, something my computer lacks til i earn the money to buy a new computer. 1st i have to get thru christmas first tho :P

What cracks me up is MSN Messenger doesn't support NAT or ICS (Which is Microsofts offering for Inet sharing). Go figure!

ive not liked msn messenger for yrs now 1.you caint log in under invisable mode on days dont want botherd but want to see who is online 2.you caint get or send offline messages 3.the annoying ads 4.the worse is its imbedded so much in your system
always stuck there in the tray even if uncheck it to noy load during a startup or reboot it still there and using resouce when not in use that sucks especially if not used often ,if any one feels the same as me get Trilion it has better options with no ads lol and you can log on to icq yahoo and aim all at once.

This program needs:
-A NAT reader. Come one, everyone does it, but msn does not
-Tabbed chat window support. I hate seeing 10 windows open
-Logging system. I know msn plus does this, but msn itself should do it
And other things i cant remember...

The software is ok.. Sucks that you can't use File Transfer behind a NAT device (like a linksys). MSN tells the recieving end to expect a file from your ip address, so if you your on a nat'ed network it would be 192.168.1.xxx.. That iddn't going to work.. I like Yahoo better, kick'in IMvironments. Bah.. the more I think about it, the more i dislike it.

I like the new layout but MS made one big mistake. They took away the drop menu of online contacts when using the tray icon. I don't like to keep the main window open at all times to be able to send an instant message to someone.

Smaller emoticons, switch over login names, better logs capabilities, appears offline when u login again (after appears offline last logout), go through proxy ability (from msn 2.0), personalised away message.
I know some of these are available from MSNPlus!, but if u need improvement, that's the way... :D

First of all, i see lots off people saying that this program s**ks... Well, don't use it then, very simple, isn't it?
Second... I'm using MSN messenger for a year right know, and in my opinion this is a version typical 4 windows XP. Build to be very easy for the newbie-users, adjustable for professional users. The only thing that bothers me are the emoticons, 2 big, 2 childish...
I read some opinions about offline messages and making the search for users more advanced... I agree with that BUT in my opinion MSN has too much to give that you would leave it for those reasons...
MSN Messenger is in combination with MSN plus definitly the best messenger out there, and I used all of them. I like the Messenger version 4.0 delivered with windows XP and i will stick with it.

Sad .very sad..now we have the NET going, tons of icons that are linked , to services that are not working often.
What really bothers me is that ADD a contact specifically says by E-mail address OR sign in name, but it forces you to enter the full e-mail address, now what sense is that if you cannot just enter the handle to search ?
There are lots of times that the new version does not connect correctly, and i believe this to be due to the loading of service connections, there just is no reason to have this ast the get go.
I love this proggie never the less, it looks nice, i like seeing than some types...BUT i am wondering why it is not possible to send offline messages?
That is a feature that makes yahoo much better, the file transfer is another issue. i do believe this will be fixed but at current and with ads which BOTHER everyone, it is a mere3 worth still.

If only it could support file send behind my linksys router... I am on 256k/64k adsl, using a linksys router, and i havent found a way to enable file send, i can only receive... I have looked at all the technical documents i have ever seen, and microsoft says it just does not work with nat technology. I opened up the ports MS recommends, but on small letter it says "Note: file transfer may not work on nat"

Until this is fixed, i will use Icq for file sends... Sorry

Well surprise, surpise ..... you *STILL* can't switch identities on this Messenger (haven't been able to since version 2.2).

You don't even get a drop list of users when you log off.

So whenever I want to switch IDs' (I have one for work colleagues and one for friends) you have to constantly retype full email address an password over an over again as you switch between them.

With v2.2 you could save your details and just select "Switch user" and it would do it and log you in aurtomatically.

So many people asked for this feature to be put back into Messenger that it got listed as a category Topic on the Messenger feedback page.

Clearly Microsoft don't listen to feed back.

Anyone have the 3.0 version? This 4.5 is annoying the hell out of me. First off, everytime I try to close it, I get a stupid message saying other programs are running that are using msn messenger, and I have to close them first... ( I close everything, and it still doesn't exit. ) The sounds no longer work for me... I can't even use MSN plus with the new version, the only actual add-on that made msn messenger great. And since I don't have XP, the gui looks like total crap... I want my 3.0 back!

the only problem is that my workplace had blocked it's port and it seem to have lack of firewall 'support' unless I install a proxy.

Great IM program, but it's putting on some wait! Needs to go on a diet.No pun intended. Really, MSN Messenger is a great way to keep in touch, if you are a blind user and using GW Micro Inc.'s Window-Eyes Screen reader. If you are looking for a way for individuals to read that have problems, go to www.gwmicro.com and look at Window-Eyes. Anyway, MSN Messenger rocks!

Is this a possible insight into the future of all our software? Try opening up one of the Contact Lists you can export from the program... I quote (from the top):

So, is everything we have now from Microsoft going to start/end with either .NET or XP... i.e. Visual Basic.NET, Office XP, Windows XP, Visual Studio.NET?! I'm starting to see a pattern emerging...

Forget it! If I would use a client for every messenger account I have, I would be stuck with 3 programs and mIRC..

The solution arrived : stable, low-memory profile, fast and easy, skinning, support for all major messengers (AIM, YahooMsg, MSN, ICQ, IRC).

there you go

IMPORTANT: This program 'does' go down beside the clock without having the window open. That's how I have it set up. It also has file transfers, and many other features. Like, you can make it so it doesn't login automactically when you open Outlook. I've been using this thing since it came out, and I like it quite a bit, besides the ads:( It's so small & quick, I just leave it running 24/7.

This program has all the features I need, and is still light and quick. It's not a hacker exploit or kiddie-oriented like ICQ and AIM. It's the most solid messenger available right now. The downside is that sometimes files don't transmit, but I suspect this not the fault of MSNMS. (bobad@mindspring.com)

very good program but needs some new features, these should be:

a built in email composer, i dont like having to load IE to check them i wish the program could do this.

sms messaging, icq got a winner there! and the reply to icq feature is excellent!

they need more options and custom options.

it would also be cool to see msn chat intergrated like yahoo have done.

they need nicer smilies!!!!

also skins would be pretty cool.

anyone else got anything else they wanna add?

Bottjena, you are the reason people have to block out others in there instant messengers cuz most people want to talk to people they know and not annoying people that search up people randomly. Do us all a favor and don't instant message anyone for now on that you don't know! It's annoying.

YES! MS rules. 3.0 is one slick update, the app actually being slick-as-hell from the beginning. I don't care how many users there are on the "other two" bloatware messaging apps! 3.0 is great.

I would give this a 5 but the people search really pisses me off. I don't use a messenger for talking to people I know, as much as I use it to find new people and make new online friends. I mean using an email address is fine to find someone you know.. but this program is useless to find new people.. you praticly have to know everything about the new person you are about to meet.. which kind of defeats the whole purpose. Although I do admite it is a fast and stable instanst messenger.. hehe I hope microsoft is reading this and they can improve the messenger with those features.

By the way, I would give version 2.2 a '4 out of 5' rating. I can live without the smiley faces, and as UK user making phonecalls to the US is useless to me.

I've now gone back to version 2.2 (which was not easy because when I un-installed version 3 it took my version 2 with it and left me with nothing).

Well, this release rounds out the program. 2.x was an excellent messenger, but 3.0 absolutely RULES! I'm not a Microsoft kiss-ass, but I must say this program is perfect. Just the right features, no bloat, quick and easy updating, easy to configure, easy to add and remove contacts, and everything WORKS GREAT! No lag, no crashing, it just works!

Excellent program. Nice and small and not cluttered, making it very easy to use.

The free phone calls is a VERY nice feature. Seems to work as well as dialpad.com does, only you don't have to visit a web page now to use it. (although dialpad is still good too).

Haven't tried the direct file transfer yet, but am very glad they added that feature.

Excellent! Tiny, light, fast, and well-behaved, it has just the features I need***. No more cumbersome ICQ numbers or number lists. No more weird installations. No more ICQ planting itself in your IE Favorites list. No more memory hog. No more mass messages. If you miss the ICQ sounds, use them for MSNM. The MSNM team needs to give lessons to the Media Player team. ***I do wish you could do direct file transfers, but this is a minor inconvenience.

Excellent! This tiny little program (367K!is a breath of fresh air compared to the bloated and intrusive ICQ. It's quick to configure and use, efficient, and truly instant. All it's missing for now is file transfer, which is not such a big deal. For those who are afraid they will miss their cute ICQ sounds, simply change Messenger's sounds to ICQ's. Hey, no more ICQ numbers to worry about losing, either. Now I just need to talk my friends in to using it and dumping ICQ.

it's a good start.. but it needs to have more options, like a Tray only option so that you don't have that window constantly in your taskbar..
And the ability to turn off the integration into Outlook...
