yes, you have to pay for the full version...but for any intelligent computer user (who only needs on-demand scanning), the core program features are free.

AVG-Antispyware has a slightly better detection rate than spyware terminator and uses less memory than SUPERantispyware.

and SAS does the exact same thing as AVG + rogue remover, so ATM im using AVG and spyware terminator. no problems and absolutely NO memory hit.

Warning: Don't download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 unless you're sure you want to buy it. You can't uninstall the trial version of the software. There is no uninstall routine provided with the trial. Then you're stuck with sales support because you don't have a license # and they only provide canned, ineffective solutions. You'll be stuck with AVG's processes running in the background. Do you need yet another process gunking up your system?

Awesome scanner, detects alot more than others. Plus it IS freeware for the most part... Yes 30 day trial for realtime protection... But after the 30 days you can STILL update and run scans... So either way the malware it detects will be removed. Very nice software indeed.

Slow, slow and slower. Over an hour for a scan, found 8 cookies that get deleted anyway.

Biggest thing is it's NOT freeware, it's 30-day trial ware at that.

AVG AntiSpyware uses less RAM than NOD32 AntiVirus (which is notorious for low memory usage), but at the same time has a better detection rate than anything on the market.

this has been the best antispyware program you can get, ever since AVG bought it from ewido.

The AVG/Ewido anti-spyware engine is as ever excellent. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of AVG Anti-Spyware as a whole.

• While efficient and attractive the graphical user interface frequently freezes forcing the user to kill all associated processes (avgas.exe and guard.exe) via the Task Manager.

• While offering an impressive feature set the resident scanner is a bit of a resource hog. I often find my CPU usage plateaux at 90-100% whenever I choose to ACTUALLY browse the internet (the culprit being guard.exe).

• Again the on-access/scheduled scanner is a bit of a resource hog. While I haven't had as much trouble c.f. the resource requirements of the resident scanner I have had to forcibly end scans (again killing processes via the Task Manager) on more than one occasion.

To my mind the only real benefit of installing anti-spyware software is in its resident scanner. In the case of AVG Anti-Spyware the resident scanner is something of a no-go (at least in my case) and thus I think I'll stick to running regular weekly scans via the FREE Ewido online scanner (which coincidentally uses the same excellent AS engine) at least until v8.0 rears it's head (hopefully they'll have fixed the resident scanner by then).

@Satansgeek:

Have you even tried it in the past 5 months? It hasn't been called Ewido in a long time, and it has been very stable for every computer I have loaded it on.

That being said, I like Spyware Terminator much better. It is free and is such a complete anti-spyware package I can't believe I haven't been using it longer.

While I've been a user and a paid subscriber of the Ewido version of this product for some time, and loved that (I would have rated that 5), following the AVG takeover nothing has gone well. I've had instability issues with the programme and found that it frequently locks up on 100% CPU usage. I contacted the AVG support staff...or should I say I tried to do so. AVG support, even for a person with a paid license (OK, paid for the Ewido version and they took over the license)their support was zero...I tried repeatedly to contact them with no reply of any kind forthcoming. Considering that I found the product to be unusable following the upgrade to the AVG version while the Ewido version had run without the slightest hitch and considering that support from them simply doesn't exist for me I think a 1 star might be warranted but I'll be generous and give 2. I did a fresh Windows installation and still found the product to be useless for me. I can hardly believe how quickly they turned supurb into junk.

I,ve always loved this procuct. One of my two top picks for this type app., the other being "Counter Spy". I'm not a real big fan of "AVG, Grisoft" but I feel that "Ewido" has been slightly improved after the merger. If you can imagine that. The two mentioned are the only two I ever allow to run on my system tray other than my "Zone Suite 2006". Really feel safe with this product. Everyone who knows anything about the saftey of a computer on line should have. or at least try it. The 30 day free trial is fully functional and will remove as well as scan and protect. There is no reason at all not to try this app.

You know, after reading these reviews, I'm shocked really. ha ha..no i don't care really. I have AVG Anti-spy ware and I really enjoy it. It works much better than spysweeper for sure! it's slow on CPU, which means I can do a full system scan and play a game on my computer(I mean an MMO game that uses most of my CPU!). I also like the interface, regardless of the man in the right corner. It's updated since the previous versions of Ewido Anti-spy ware, and I doubt the name will be changing anytime soon since AVG bought them. This is a really nice product, plus it detects any kind of spy ware if its on the computer, but I've been spy ware clean for quite a while now. No complaints so far!

LokiLoki reviewed v4.0.0.172c on Oct 3, 2006

The new version has its name changed to AVG Anti-Spyware.

I have noticed that it is now significantly faster and scans deeper.

The minus 1 point goes to its GUI. I don't like having a picture of a real person in my status page. It doesn't fit into the interface(looks cheap).

Hope there's no more name changing in the future. Frequent name changing worries me and I fear my lifetime license policy may be "changed" should they flipflop again.

Well, here, let me clear up the clouds in your head, and explain my 5-star rating for you, freegoo.

I don't know of too many good, reliable reviewers who have rated ewido, either. I rate it highly because it does its job without bogging my system down, and without needing constant attention. It has a pretty good interface, and a good feature set.

I can't tell you if it detects or cleans IAmAMoron.Because.ICantSecureMyBrowser.Spyware.Win32, or Trojan.I.Am.Stupid.Enough.To.Run.Every.Attachment.I.Receive.T39, because I never come across malware. I'm not one of those morons who fires up an unpatched MSIE with default settings to go porn-site hopping. I don't run .SCR files I got off Kazaa, just because "I haaaaaaave to know what it is!". I don't believe sites that offer me "FREE SCREEN SAVERS!!! YOU WANT THIS!!!"

So what am I to do? How do you justify YOUR 3-star rating? How do you know it doesn't deserve better?

Many people fall into one of two categories when it comes to an opinion on anti-malware software: Those who have had the software miss one malicious program, and therefore think that that particular security software is useless; and those who have had it detect one malicious program, and therefore think that that security software is "Oh mah gawd, ith awthum!!!"

I can't say either way, responsibly, so I go with what I see, and give it the benefit of the doubt on the rest.

--------

Whoa, big-time edit. This just in:

http://www.pcmag.com/art...2/0,1759,1993985,00.asp

OK, so it has a nice interface and feature set, but it blows as an anti-spyware.

Not to rain on everyones parade, but I've yet to see a good independant review that actually tested Ewido's effectiveness against malware. Lots came up on a google search, but were nothing but a rehash of Ewido's feature list. The few I came up with comparing Ewido to Antispyware were older, and Ewido faired poorly against the rest.

I'm not saying Ewido isn't good... but there doesn't seem to be much out there to establish Ewido as a leader (yet). I'm sort of puzzled by all the 5 star ratings...

Although it's a Grisoft/Intel product, I like it anyway. It seems to clean tough malware like Spy Sheriff and Spy Quake better than any other. I particularly like the light memory footprint of the resident scanner. Give it a .4 point downgrade because the update server doesn't always work.

Oh, now I feel so much better... www.anti-trojan-software-reviews.com gives ewido the thumbs-up. The same site that has a review of "ewido security suite" version 2, from mid-2004? How helpful. How "recent".

This is a very nice update. The performance increases are noteworthy. I do wish the balloon tips for scheduled scans could be disabled.

AVG has merged/acquired "ewido anti-malware". This is an excellent Anti-Trojan program.

Ewido is the best of a new crop of anti-Trojan programs. On my recent tests over at www.anti-trojan-software-reviews.com it emerged as was one of the few products that could reliably detect polymorphic and process injecting Trojans that were totally missed by anti-virus products like Norton and AVG.

debugged reviewed v4.0.0.172 on Jun 24, 2006

The prior name was better... "ewido anti-malware". That name summed up what ewido does much better than the name "ewido anti-spyware" does. The ewido people say that before, people thought ewido was an anti-virus application (which it is not), so they changed the name. Well, now, won't people think it's just an anti-spyware application (which, again, it is not)? Yes, I know, all the other vendors are using the stupid "anti-spyware" moniker, so the choice is pretty much made up for them.

In any case, version 4.0 is a significant improvement. The inteface still uses a stupid custom GUI, but at least it can be minimized the normal way now, and resized (though it doesn't remember its size/position--argh!).

ewido 4.0 doesn't seem to kill my CPU nearly as much as 3.0 and 3.5 did. The background service and the GUI application seem to be quite memory hungry, though, taking 40-MB and 50-MB of private bytes each, respectively, on my system this moment.

I can't comment on how well ewido detects malware, since I have none on my system. I will say that a huge detection database (circa 355,000) alone does not mean anything. If that's your standard of measure for which anti-malware solution is best, you're sadly mistaken.

Incredible piece of software that no PC owner should go without. It's got one of the highest detection rates out of the typical antispyware vendors including Ad-Aware and Spybot. After its trial it gives you the free scanner which is all you really need. The new UI in 4.0 is fantastic and easy to navigate, but doesn't p****foot and oversimply everything.

Speaking of which, 4.0 is actually easier on system resources than 3.5 and instead of being labeled as an antiTrojan/antiMalware like the previous versions, it's finally settled at antiSpyware, and with the name shift, it's going toe to toe with heavyweights, and I personally think Grisoft has superior technology this time around.

OVER 300,000! DEFINITIONS.... still updates lots... version 4.0 is coming out soon and from www.wilderssecurity.com under the ewido forums... its going to have alot of new features!

I bought this.Even thou I have Asquared(free)The monitor and automatic updates are worth it. Over 200,000 definitions in database. Heavy on resources but options for several types of scans eliminate this problem. Hasn't found anything and that is a good thing. Users who opt for the free version (after 14 day trial ) can easily see the lastest definitions update listing at Ewido site and verify that their difintion file is up to date.

Antibuddha

Antibuddha reviewed v3.0 on Mar 1, 2005

If the system would allow me to give Ewido an additional half star, I would. This scanner has as simple an interface as you'll find and it runs smoothly albeit extremely slow. The update occured as advertised with no problems. I've seen this product given some rave reviews over on download.com, but I have my reservations. For starters, there aren't any help screens in the english language version. The realtime protection would intermittently drop off and I had to keep restarting it. This is generally being touted as an up and coming anti-trojan, but reading the marketing claims over on its site, I take it its somewhat of a catchall malware grabber. Most of us already have spyware protection in the form of Spy Sweeper, Spybot, Adaware, and others, so part of the program adds weak redundancies. That leaves it with a primary role as anti-trojan. I just don't see this product in the same league as TDS-3 or Trojan Hunter. Unless you're a powerhouse like Kaspersky and are able to respond instantly to new threats, you need user forums and a way to communicate about new variants and false positives. The people who say they love this thing are doing it on faith. There just isn't a lot of info out there on what kind of design these folks are using. Perhaps it deserves 4 stars on price, but I'd rather pay a bit more and have a more powerful focused program.

httpd.confused

httpd.confused reviewed v3.0 on Dec 3, 2004

Pros:

* Free to use, with the basic feature set, and reasonably-priced with the full feature set (though the price did go up recently, due to the weak USD).

* Seems to have very strong malware-detection capability (though I have not verified this myself).

* Ewido support is very responsive (this is a *very* important consideration with this type of software, and figures heavily in my 4-star rating).

* The application is under constant development and improvement.

Cons:

* CPU usage can be extraordinary under some circumstances, on some systems (and it's not just me--look at the Wilders anti-trojan software forum).

* I've had quite a few false-positives (more than with any other anti-virus or anti-trojan product, in fact).

* The custom interface is awful. Yes, it looks nice, but the window isn't resizable, isn't compatible with shell-hooking utilities, and isn't even fully compatible with Windows Explorer itself (i.e. click the Ewido Task Bar button, and the window does not minimize). Also, the custom interface can cause *serious* problems if you have to run Ewido in Safe Mode, to remove stubborn malware--this is because your video drivers won't be available in Safe Mode, and everything can look jumbled. The stupid custom interface also hampers remote administration (such as if you are helping someone via Remote Assistance or VNC).

* Lots of important features are missing. There is no way to exclude files from detection, for one thing, nor is there command line support. (This fact alone prevents any chance at a 5-star rating.)

* There is no documentation. At all. It may be a simple application to use (mainly because... it has no options to set), but it still needs documentation. For example: How would a novice user know how often automatic updates take place, if they are enabled? Or, how would they know if the real-time scanner has a built-in timeout in the event that a scan was taking too long? Or whether there was command line support? What do the two services that get installed do, exactly, and which need to be running, with what configurations (i.e. automatic updates, etc.)? Point made.
