@Roj: You are a mental midget. What are you some kind of friggin' Tory or BNP member? You sure speak like one you audacious wank. If you didn't contribute one iota of code to the program or donate to support the programmer, you have no expectation of ANYTHING. You didn't PAY for anything. You got something for nothing and are complaining about it! It's akin to being given a free car but complaining because it's not a Bugatti Veyron. You have debunked NOTHING. The only thing you've debunked is that you are a waste of a sperm cell. If you don't like it because it's missing features, learn programming and write the code or code an audio editor yourself, you fap slap.

As for Audacity, it's a great free program for doing basic audio editing tasks. Throw money at the developers for their hard work. Throw rocks at FAILroj.

To those who trumpted the whole "it's FREE" rubbish as if that excuses shortcomings:

FREE is not an excuse for lack of features or usability. I and anyone who uses an application has every right to expect a certain level of ease of use or functionality given that the author of the program undertook the endeavor in the first place. In short, get a grip and stop being apologists.

Now that this point is crystal clear and the "FREE so don't complain" nonsense thoroughly debunked and consigned to the dung heap where it belongs, Audacity is a very competent beginners audio editor. I would appreciate the versatility of Goldwave's mixing and cue functions and expect to see the program evolve more towards them in the future just for the sake of ease of use.

I'd give it a FOUR and a recommendation as an excellent work in progress.

Pros: NONE

Cons: I customized Audacity with my own Settings and some of them got wiped out with the update. You moved stuff without Notice of that and opted to wipe out Bass / Treble which I used a Custom Setting for as well as other tools I used.

Oh not they are Chains etc., they are buried where I cant find them without days of reading. Then half the stuff I custom made is gone cause your wanted to screw with it.

Bottom Line: S U C K S stick with your older version if you made a lot of Custom Batches...

Here is my experience in 4 steps:
1 - Opened a MP3 file, edited it, no problem.
2 - Opened another MP3, wouldn't let me copy/cut/paste at all. Huh?
3 - Opened the same MP3 file with GoldWave. Copy/cut/paste, you name it, no problem.
4 - Uninstalled Audacity.
Points for being free and working well on at least one file, points off for not reliably doing so on any file. I'll make it a 3 and I think that's being generous, but it looks like a promising app once it gets ironed out.

It's free - that's nice.

However, compared to GoldWave it's a toy. And GoldWave is cheap. The mixing and cue point features alone are worth the money for someone serious about doing their own custom mixes. In comparison, Audacity's equivalents are a joke.

THREE stars - it has a LONG way to go.

I like this app a great deal.

However, between 1.3.5 Beta and this new 1.3.6 RC1, there are some significant changes to the User Interface, from Menus to Toolbars to Default Values and Preferences.

I'm frustrated by this continual change of direction in regards to the interface, menu systems, etc. because I'm not sure if they are based on any sort of usability studies or are a result of arbitrary preferences from a rotating array of contributors to the project.

I'd also appreciate better docs and detailed changelogs.

So, even though this is a very good and free alternative, I don't feel comfortable giving it a full-on rating of 5 at this point. In fact, I'd rather give it a 3.5 than a 4, but that's not an option.

This is an excellent open source sound editor. Simple enough GUI that you don't need to be a rocket scientist to use with multiple tracks so you can splice and dice various streams easily.
Worth a try.

Want changes? Ask the developers, don't post it here! Seriously, do you really expect them to read your thoughts? Because they probably don't read Betanews.

Shorter release cycle: Audacity team promised to release new alpha-version every two weeks in following 3 months.

1.3.6 is expected in fall 2008. And let me tell you that 1.3.6 will ROCK.

About MDI: Microsoft says that MDI is obsolete. And it isn't supported on all platforms anyways.

RWW

RWW reviewed v1.3.5 Beta on May 7, 2008

Leave Audacity's GUI alone!! Always a joy to work with....simple controls, so easy to use.
Definately would like to see a separate Audacity with video capabilities as long as the same simplicity is carried over. But separate!

DudeBoyz

DudeBoyz reviewed v1.3.5 Beta on May 7, 2008

UPDATE: Per an above suggestion, I have submitted feature requests to the Audacity team via their project web site.

They really need to do a much better job of documenting and separating the last official stable version, 1.2.6

It can be confusing, to say the least, and as can happen with Open Source projects, sometimes the coding gets ahead of the rest of the work.

A clear and detailed comparison page, including graphics where appropriate, might help make things easier in trying to articulate what the advantages may be with the new app and how, specifically, users will benefit.

Documentation can be a real pain - just look at Spin Rite 6, which never really did get good documentation of its own - but it's always good to have a clear understanding of what these new versions bring to the table vs the 1.2.6 release.

I still like it and use it, but at this point I'd rather see them take a breather on the code and put out a final, fully documented package.

I also wish that the project window was "dockable" so that as you moved it to one of the edges of the display, it would sort of "snap" into place.

Unlike 1.2.6, at least this version remembers the window location, but if you accidentally drag the project window one pixel too far to the right, for example, it resets the project window to the upper left corner.

If it auto-docked, it'd be a bit easier to handle, especially if you have multiple windows open and are working on a project.

I'd also like to see some sort of improved MDI code for handling multiple tracks. It's one of the things we often take for granted in apps like Paint Shop Pro, where you can tile or cascade the contents. When you have to open multiple instances of the app, lots of screen space is taken up by the interface buttons being repeated for each window.

Better support for standard keyboard selection of the audio file would be great too. For instance, SHIFT PAGE UP and SHIFT PAGE DN.

Yeah, that's a lot to ask, but this is the premier open source app in its field, and I'd like to see the developers ramp it up a bit so it can compete with Sound Forge Audio Studio (the $69 little brother of the big Sound Forge app)

A faster development cycle would be welcome for fans of the app as well.

Audacity is a very good free app.

But, it needs some key features, including a simple "Punch-In" feature that lets you set a specific length when recording. That way you don't have to baby sit cassette recordings and manually end the recording process after the tape stops. Your tape is 43 minutes per side? Set it to record for 45 or 46 minutes and then stop and maybe auto-save. Sound Forge Audio Studio 8 ($69 retail) can do that, and it would rock if Audacity could.

It does have a Timer Recording feature, which can be used for this - sort of - but it is a bit awkward to try to get the recording to start in coordination with the PLAY button on the tape recorder.

It would be nice if you could avoid having to specify a time and could instead just set the length of the recording and click a "START" button to begin the process. That way you can set it up, press the PLAY button on the tape recorder and then click the START button on the interface.

There is a workaround for 1.2.x, but again, it's less than elegant.

I'm grateful they added a batch feature, but it is not nearly as intuitive / user-friendly as it should be, in my opinion.

I'd love to be able to set it to equalize a batch of audio files to add more bass, for example. It's not terribly easy to figure out how to do.

I also wish that development was being done at a faster pace.

I do appreciate the program and that it is free, I just want it to be a bit better, faster so folks can have a competitive multi-platform audio app. Open Source is a great thing to support, and I'd rather use free / Open Source software than commercial stuff when possible, as many others might as well.

Thanks, and keep up the good work please.

You can even make it PORTABLE!!!!

I really like the program. It's a big help if you want to create your own ringtones out of mp3 files (if your phone supports it), but one thing I would like to see is the ability to resample the mp3's. Most phones can only use something less than 192 or 128 k bit rates. Add that feature, and it's a solid 5 for me.
