Reviews of Avi2Dvd

Great piece of software --- very easy to use, and reliable. I've had no problems running it under XP, Vista, or 7, and I've used Avi2Dvd well over a hundred times. The only issue I've ever had is that running under Windows 7, it reduces the screen color depth --- which reverts back to normal after you close the program. The reviewers here knocking Avi2Dvd perhaps are writing from Bellevue, or studied mathematics under Professor Forrest Gump.

DO not waste your time. Too complicated and I am surprised why such crappy software gets 5star ratings in your review....The only plus point is that it is free. There are a few other free good ones like DVDflick.

My experience with Avi2DVD was not good. It kept crashing despite installing it correctly. It refused to close when I had finished using it. It also refused to un-install from my computer and even after re-installing it I could not remove it.
Take my advice and STAY AWAY FROM THIS SOFTWARE! It's so full of bugs that it's not worth the trouble. ZERO OUT OF TEN.

horrible interface way to much configuration for the average Joe, will stay with ConvertXtoDVD, needs more flags on the interface.

a brilliant program, been around for a while, not updated as much as i wished it was, but there you go,

this program is solid, and more importantly works with a high quality Encoder (HCEnc) and of course supports old versions of CCE (although HCEnc is preferred for low bit rate conversions)

don't get me wrong, ConvertXToDVD is good, but it is a trans-coder (FFMpeg and libavcodec) like many, so quality would never for the forseable future come close to what HCEnc can produce, (i don't feel that trans-coding would ever be as clean, crisp and sharp as a full fledged high quality encoder (CCE, HCEnc, Tmpgenc)

Avi2Dvd interface i agree is very messy now, go back to when it first came out it was acceptable to the current standards, but not anymore, the flags are way to cheesy now, and the whole GUI in general looks very cartoony,
because of the old and quite unuser friendly GUI I'm only giving 4 points not the full 5, however it still has it where it counts, if only the horrible GUI didn't hinder the program so much.

my eye at the moment is on "AVStoDVD", this program is quite good aswell, and again utilizes the wonderful HCEncoder, not as resilient as Avi2DVD, but definitely won't be long considering the excellent support it's getting, and the GUI is of course up to the current standards with some nice soft colors,

but for quality, i choose AVStoDVD, but i always have Avi2DVD on standby just in case i need it,

When I click on the GO button, this error message appears - AVI2DVD.EXE has stopped working, so therefore cannot get this program to work at all.

Tried to load an mkv and get this:
"Access violation at address 00551178 in module Avi2Dvd.exe'. Read of address 00000000."
    mkv is
    6ch AC3

Does not work with all aspect ratios, nor will it use 'normal' subs and therefore the sub option is worthless
Encoding is excellent when it does work.
TMPGEnc DVD Author (w/divx encoding) is much better but not free.

I tried it and it did not work. The log did not produce useful information about what went wrong. Are there other apps that can do this?

Maybe not the most efficient out there but one of the top freeware tools.

About the only thing it's really good for is adding selectable subs. Other than that it cannot handle more than one avi, & there is no audio source option.

Not the most pretty thing out there but does what it's supposed to do very well. Fantastic for freeware. There is nothing better!

  22. 5 out of 5 stars

    Reviewing 0.42 Beta (Nov 28, 2005)

There aren't many good freeware alternatives, so this scores well in that range.

Why give this a low score? It's a shame that people keep giving ridiculously low scores because they get an error that obviously most others aren't. Look at all the other great reviews.
(It's kind of like the joke about the guy reporting all the people passing him going the wrong way down a one-way street.. )

This a great freeware alternative. It's pretty easy too once you know how to use it. And it delivers a very good quality.

Perhaps you might want to direct your question to the programs' Forum? Sounds like a missing codec to me.

This converison tool works very well, is simple to set up & results using CCE are superb.

anyone know why my program comes up with the error message of "AVISource: couldn't locate a decompressor for fourcc div3"

  26. 5 out of 5 stars

    Reviewing 0.3.2 Beta (Oct 5, 2005)

Excellent, easy to use application. I just used it to rip a very poor quality file that I was on the verge of throwing away; AVi2Dvd rescued this hopeless mess when every other program I tried choked and gave up with an error message. The file wasn't perfect, but AVi2Dvd did smooth over the bumpy parts and allow it to keep playing. Well done! I just wish I would have tried it sooner.

5 from me straight up. Has new tabbed interface, can handle batch jobs, the new free encoders work great, won't need the half of space it used to. It keeps getting better and better, nice job.

Very nice, freeware tool. For whatever reason, FileForum doesn't have the latest vers [currently, 0.28 beta]. To get that, or the most recent vers., go to the AVI2DVD homepage, at http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.html

and look for the links saying "LATEST VERSION."

Pretty aw-reet vid converter, can use a multitude of both free & payfor encoding engines. The screenshot is an older one here, now it also has a
"job queue" window,(for which I'm not sure I see the need).Handles subs well, and author is constantly working out bugs & adding improvements. Job well done!

Nice app, although the interface is a little cluttered.

    Reviewing 0.2.5 Beta (Apr 20, 2005)

I would like to see some feature for batch processing: for instance, being able to handle a directory of music videos. This program doesn't appear to have one.

Mpeg is used for DVD burning, so one doesn't need to convert it. Just use a burner like NERO. This program basically converts avi to mpeg so that it can be burned, so it would be a waste to convert them to AVI first.

  33. 5 out of 5 stars

    Reviewing 0.2.5 Beta (Apr 20, 2005)

Wonder if someone can tell me if I could convert my mpeg to dvd with this wonderful tool. ... or would I have to convert them to avi first? Would that mean a loss in quality?

    Reviewing 0.1.1 (Feb 12, 2005)

I downloaded this program for the sole puropose of encoding my mkv files to dvd. With the core AAC audio decoder installed, I got a floating point error when attempting to import the mkv. Withouth the AAC decoder installed, it won't pick up the audio stream and as a result it won't let me encode the video.

All in all Avi2Dvd is bug ridden but has great potential. Something to keep an eye on.
