Pros: It's one of the few that gets an "automatic upgrade" from me. These people know what they're doing and they care about doing it right. They take their time developing and testing their software, and--OH MY GAWD!--they actually fix bugs.

I wish it would support SFTP or FTP over SSH. I did not use BC very much except when inspecting colleague's listings, but I always got great results and it saved me hours of work. But the support of sftp would be good, as all our servers have ftp turned off by default.

Great utility, great support. This is what software should be. Not some moron vomiting out freeware that every changeling gives a "5" just because they don't have to piss out their last penny. Not some lazy idiots who can't be bothered to respond to paying customers.

Even updates are easy; I just click a couple buttons, and it's done. I don't have to open my slow-loading browser and then figure out what to download, and then download it, then run the installer and then enter some idiotic installation authorization code (hello, JAM Software!).

These people do their jobs and they do them well. Highly recommended.

Version 3 brings lots of improvements like secure FTP (SSL and SSH), multithreaded FTP, and lots of other things.

Oh, and this build is outdated. It's up to 459 as I write this.

Fast, convenient and reliable. Now, inline editing would be much nicer than the separate edit boxes at bottom, and I would love to have merge buttons for individual blocks, like in Araxis Merge - but then consider the price difference. At this price, Beyond Compare deserves full 5 star rating.

An excellent program for its purpose. It lost one star because it stores settings in ""C:\Documents and Settings\***user***\Application Data\Scooter Software\Beyond Compare"

Come on, Scooter Software. At least GIVE US THE OPTION of storing ALL settings in the /App directory!

This is an excellent tool. Definately worth the price. Yes, there are freeware alternatives, but none of them come even close to Beyond Compare. I only wish more shareware was this good and well priced. Give it a try and see for yourself!

File and folder comparison and synchronization is one of my daily tasks in work. Because of that I had to try almost any available program of this kind. Unfortunately, although there are so many sync applications, most of them try hard to become backup software instead doing their primary job. Others like the well known Araxis Merge, cost a fortune and left out binary comparison.

Two programs do the job almost excellent, ExamDiff Pro and Beyond Compare. Both of them are small and fast applications, able to fully compare and sync folders, text files and binaries. The reason I finally choose Beyond Compare is its hard to compete filtering features, Zip support and comparison speed.

Beyond Compare has some rough edge though. It doesn’t fully support Unicode, neither Zip64 archive format. BC text and hex editors lack inline editing, something I really missed.

Anyway, I couldn’t find anything better than BC, at least for such a low price. And Beyond Compare support team is very helpful and listen their clients, implementing suggested features in new versions.

IMHO BC is the best of it's kind. Personally I use it in combination with Araxis Merge (which is more user friendy in the case of comparing files).

I tried a few other utilities in this genre, and Beyond Compare is far-and-away the best.

The learning curve isn't bad at all. The documentation could stand some improvement, though.

I used to think that FTP Voyager had a pretty good FTP/local folder synchronization feature, but Beyond Compare does it much, much better (to the extent that had I not paid for FTP Voyager, it would be off my system right now).

The support provided by Scooter Software is excellent, which counts for a lot, as far as I'm concerned.

This is a rare, underpriced, effective, top-shelf shareware utility.

Looks like BC *does* support Unicode. I think maybe it already did but only in 2.2.6 did it offer automatic recognition of Unicode files.

So for me it's just about perfect now.

Quite nice to use.

But watch out : I already had problems with long files (> 50 Ko).
I don't know why, the files were truncated when I saved, and I lost my data. I have not yet a clear answer from them, maybe it is the program, maybe I did something wrong, but I am not going to try again.
But remains very nice for small files.

It's my favorite diff utility. In the company i work for, i'm using Araxis Merge, an excellent competitor, which lacks some features really like in BC. Take for example, zip archive comparison, builtin ftp support, better customization, better filter mechanism, smaller footprint and a lot more at an much more affordable price.

Excellent piece of software.
Found a slight bug when comparing a local folder to an FTP folder and sent an email to them. they got back to me with the fix within a day.

This has been unbelievably useful recently. Unicode support and being able to edit directly in the content would be nice, but considering how cheap it is and how rarely I need those features, I'm quite happy sticking to this rather than trying out the more expensive Merge.

Only had it a few weeks, but it's more than paid for itself already.

Yes, I like Araxis Merge, but I'm not sure it can really be compared without taking the price into consideration: Araxis Merge being $129 and $219 for standard and pro editions repectively.

The feature I really love about Beyond Compare is the right-click context menu for quick comparison (md5 check?) and easily view difference instead of opening the program, then opening each file separatly.
