@..::][Ben][::..

I contacted SlySoft regarding this rootkit information and they told me that their software does indeed install a rootkit -- their driver.

Take it how you will. Personally, I don't like rootkits in my system; they should've at least told us first

UPDATE:
@rotjong
AFAIK, the key returned whenever I ran CloneDVD/CloneCD, but this may not be the case with AnyDVD.

I've used CloneCD for about four years, and it works flawlessly. I paid for it once and every update since has been free. It allows me to make backup copies of my game and other CDs, and it's "Hide CD-R" feature allows me to play games using a burned CD (so my kids and I can play the same game without having to pass around the original and get it scratched up). It's an easy "5" rating.

Not really an update for me since I'm not running Vista but CloneCD 5.3.0.0 is still working essentially flawlessly, as usual, on my XP Pro SP2 system.

The Zepter issue is an old one. I'm unsure if CloneCD ever employed it or whether it was only an AnyDVD issue. Regardless, it wasn't a rootkit. Its sole purpose was in deal with trial usage of AnyDVD. SlySoft, itself, has stated they added the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Zepter Software] so arguing that point is moot. The real argument is whether it's an actual security threat or not. For those truly paranoid people it's easy enough to remove with Sysinternals RegDelNull. Though I tend to be on the paranoid side, myself, this never bothered me. But, to prove a point I deleted the key and it didn't reappear when I restarted AnyDVD so I'm assuming they've changed how it works. Nonetheless, people need to worry about more nefarious companies and their software. SlySoft isn't evil.

Note: Removed the key, restarted AnyDVD without the key returning. Installed AnyDVD 6.0.9.9 and rebooted without the key returning. Moot issue.

Not as superior as it used to be--but not their fault, the competition is making better 1:1 cd copying software. Still I believe you will not find a better disc copier than CloneCD, and if the 'cloned' cd does not work with this baeby, "it ain't gonna work." This can bypass all of the copy protection out there, the huge catch is that your CD recorder must support all of the copy methods (e.g. weak sectors) or you're out of luck...it'll burn but won't play. Oh--and I find this to be better than that alcohol 120 program...both copy ok. Cant stand the interface of the other.

Recently not as "big" as it used to be, it is still the best 1:1 CD copying software out there. Nero can copy using some of the same methods, but I just can't stand the 6.X Nero interface--if you even call it that. CloneCD has copied many CD's protected with SafeDisc 2.55 that Nero just can't do at least with version 5.6. I'll be honest--I use the built-in Windows software for 99% of the CD's I burn, just because it works and it's easy. For the few CD's that require special formats (like Enhanced CD's, bootable CD's, etc.), I use Roxio only because it's there and it's easier for me to use over the new nero interface. I still use CloneCD fo all CD copying.

Still not really worth buying. Either use Nero or Alcohol 120%...or a combo of the two. Alcohol definitely does more for your money. The only real reason to use CloneCD would be if you don't have Nero, you already bought it back when it was useful, or the added image drive from Alcohol annoys you.

I've had both Doom3 and Sims2 installed along with CloneCD and haven't had any issues. I'm guessing that just varies system to system.

As for CloneCD...I haven't noticed that it does anything Nero won't do. I realize it does the whole 1X1 copy, but again, I have yet to ever need anything from this program that I can't do with Nero.

Maybe I'm not enough of a 'power user' to appreciate it, but I'd tell people to buy Nero rather than this.

I went from CloneCD to Alcohol to CloneCD. I'm staying with clone for the time being. Alcohol uses far more memory than CloneCD. Read speeds for CloneCD and Alcohol are the same for my system. CloneCD edges out Alcohol for write speeds by about 5%.

So far CloneCD is better for me. Once Alcohol releases a new version and optimizes performance, I'll likely give it another try.

This license is NOT lifetime. I purchased one when Elaborate Bytes owned it, but now Slysoft refuses to recognize my license for upgrades. They expect me to fork out more money for something I bought once before, honestly and fairly. Who knows, in a year or 2 they may change their company name and pull the same stunt. No thanks, there are much better alternatives than to feed their greed.

I've used this program for awhile and I still prefer it. Sure other programs have their benefits but CloneCD is just plain simple to use and it does the job. I'm glad to see enough people have the sense to know that Elby sold the program and AnyDVD due to European laws. As wayman noted about the one year license... they are incorrect. The website clearly states that updates are free for the life of the product. The tech support is for a year.

And as always this product does its job flawlessly.

Wow, the stupidity of some people can be amazing... Elaborate Bytes was not bought out by SlySoft, they just took over CloneCD because of European laws. If they joined the 'anti-piracy' move, then why are they still making CloneDVD? Anyway, CloneCD is the classic, the origional. They were the best back in the day. I haven't used Alcohol 120% yet because I've used my older version of CloneCD for years now without any problems, though I'm sure it works quite well. When people post in-depth explinations about things, I wish they would research it a little more.

-Lord- you're a g**d*** idiot. Elaborate Bytes didn't jump on the "anti-piracy" bandwagon or "cave in to pressure". European law changed such that to continue selling CloneCD would leave them open to legal action. They didn't want to stop developing the app and you're an a** for not knowing the facts. The best for making those hard to copy CD's and a simple interface. As for the person complaining that it's 2 speed while burning in shareware mode: IT'S SHAREWARE. Your point exactly. It's only to let you test it, and if you like it, THEN buy it and you'll be burning as fast as your burner supports. If not, you are free to choose from the many other programs available.

I'm gonna do a review on 4.0, i love the new UI look, all orange and nice, bit sheepish, but hey it doesn't matter, it's a burning program ;). Well i see no difference what so ever, copying cds in this version compared to 3.0, all it has done has become slightly more confusing with the certain options such as "Game CD", "Data CD" and so on. No point really, in 3.0 all you had to do was copy and it did any cd you wanted and done it flawlessly. I haven't been able to copy anything i've wanted to yet :), thanks CloneCD. What i DO see in the new 4.0 series is that CloneCD now gives much more detailed information on every action it does, which is always a plus and is what i was looking for. Last time it was pretty poor at cd burn ETA's, but now does it just fine. Dispite the extra options, everythings still copied fine for me, so i have no reason but to give this version of CloneCD a fat 5 in my books. Gimie

I still give this product 5 because it does it's job. It has far more better skins then Windows Blinds in my opinion. WB skins are terrible, and i've been thru 500. WB may be faster, and cover more ground, but StyleXP is the one for me.

Emily reviewed v4.0.0.0 Beta 17 on Apr 11, 2002

If it were free, it's not bad. But at $20 it costs the same as WindowBlinds. And WindowBlinds does a lot more, has more better skins, is faster and skins all of Windows XP.

OK someone please tell me what's changed so much in the newer versions of CloneCD so bad that you have to give it bad reviews?

I've used CloneCD since it starting doing what is said correctly, around about the v2.6 days, and even up to today i haven't noticed a single change that warrents a bad responce. It still copys cds just exactly the same as it has done for me before, and that's all what the program is about and what is should be reviewed on. The latest version, we see a new "Sheepish" organge look. Very very weird indeed, but i don't see why that matters for a program like this. Maybe it's just me who has had a lucky turn, but what's wrong people?

Hmmm...never heard of a "don't amplify weak sectors" law. That would make CCD just about useless in the USA. Also, it's pricey, and shareware is too limited with that 2x limitation. Too bad. It could be a really good program. (bobad@charter.net)

I hae tried many of the differnt programs over the years, CD CLONE is the best and #1 program for making 1 to 1 copys, hands down. The image save's well and you can zip and send them to others... this is handy at Lan Partys as for the rest of you, that complain about the price, there are many ways around this :-) Email me at PTA_SUPER@hotmail, along with the many options designed to beat many savedisk and other worthless and crappy protections, Cd Clone makes the perfect 1 to 1 all the time.

I've been using CloneCD for a while. It is easy to use and I've had no coasters with it. But then I'm using an HP 7110 drive. The 2x limitation for unregistered users is s***ty. If it was cheaper I'd pay to get the higher speed, but it's too expensive for number of times I need it. So the 2x limit is not encouraging me to pay up. It's just annoying. People have been complaining about the stupid price of CloneCD from day 1, but Elaborate Bytes either aren't listening or have not yet grasped the economic realities of the market. So ElBy listen up: CLONECD IS OVERPRICED.

DiscDUMP is much better and with FrontEnd it is the best software for RIPPING a CD. Most software allows you to keep at least one back up copy of your software. CloneCD allows you to accomplish this easily. I think FileForum *should* keep us informed on software which we like and use.

I give it 4 stars because there must always be room for improvement, even in great programs like CloneCD.

Well, I have always thought that this product was a great product until last night when I took the time to create images to my hard drive for 6 different programs and then burn them to 3 different sets (18 CD's altogether). Not one CD came out right and I had to re-burn the CD's with Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5.0 instead. That went without a problem. Oh well...maybe you have to do direct copies with this but I have lost my confidence in this program.

busta

busta reviewed v3.0.2.3 on Jun 21, 2001

That's not neccessarily true that if there's skipping or errors in audio CDs it must be because his settings are wrong or his CDRW isn't supported. There are only two programs that I'm aware of now on Windows that support secure audio ripping (error correction) and that's Exact Audio Copy and the CDex 1.40 beta 5 (paranoid mode). I heard secure audio ripping might be added to CloneCD later on. If you have a damaged audio CD, or are trying to copy a audio CDR that wasn't burned correctly then you can easily get scratch sounds with a CloneCD copy. CloneCD might be great for data CDs, but I'd stick with EAC (www.exactaudiocopy.de) for audio copying.

litoby

litoby reviewed v3.0.0.20 Beta on May 30, 2001

if your audio cd's came out scratchy or bad, then you aren't copying them properly with clonecd or your cd-r isn't set up properly with the rest of your hardware. and this program is mainly used to copy cd's you can't normally copy perfectly. example... bleem cd. when you set the program to read all subchannel data and don't turn on error skip, it makes a perfect 1:1 relinquishing the need for the original as the image is perfect. this works great with every cd i have ever used. i have a plextor 8/20 internal scsi cd-r. awesome. another program that uses ccd images is burndrive (burndrive.com) burndrive can also write iso's and mp3's and much more! still beta.

Mr. Brown, are you a complete idiot, or what? The GD-ROM is a proprietary 1GB CD format for Sega. No reader but the alleged Yamaha CDR400 series (with special firmware) is able to read the "packed area" beyond the physical ring you see on the disc. And, dumba**, the reason why there are Dreamcast ISOs on the net is because groups have found a way to read the GDs or transfer the data from the Dreamcast, resample or remove portions, edit the executable, and burn back the remaining portion (up to 700MB of data+audio) onto 74 or 80 minute CDs. So, before you post a stupid comment like that, make sure you can back it up with proof. Moron.
