Publisher's Description

Comodo BOClean protects you against a full spectrum of malware, automatically removing these programs from memory, your hard disk and your registry without the need to reboot or drop your internet connection. It safely neutralizes these threats instantly without any risk of damage to your files or computer. It is designed for central administration in network environments and can be customized in a number of ways. It can also be hidden on a desktop to protect against tampering by end users. Because it is automatic and runs in the background, there is no need to depend on user training or vigilance to secure your network. It is also excellent for individual users and "home" networks. It will shut down an intrusion long before the person on the other end has a chance to so much as "ping" the victim's machine, much less start grabbing data. When an intrusion occurs, it will stop it instantly. No other security program from any other manufacturer works this way.

I used to use ThreatFire until it destroyed several good apps along with an actual threat whenever it found them. Now I use BOClean which has never killed good apps along with the bad stuff it catches.

I have used BOClean on and off for years, from back in its early days as a paid version. It has never caused me any real problems. On the other hand, I run in a limited user account and don't install suspicious programs, so it never catches anything either. But it is a nice backup, and I see no reason not to use it, especially since it is free. It doesn't slow anything down in my 2.4 GHz P4 under WinXP SP3. I am running avast! Pro also with no conflicts.

I don't trust anything Comodo related.
This is no exception, it makes your system slow, and it doesn't give any security in return.

Yes, I'm sure that's what s/he meant, idiot. Nice post. And to think, sometimes genuinely helpful reviews get deleted around here.

This thing is indeed a piece of garbage. By default, it will blow away your Winsock registry settings and your "downloaded program files" directory contents, even when it flags a false positive.

"Always"? Don't you mean: "Ever since I was up late one night drinking Ny-Quil in my mommy's basement, trolling around BetaNews?"

I always knew and stated what a digital turd BOClean was, but the list of those in agreement was a short one, because of the fanboy user base and the complete lack of a trial version. I find it funny how many people agree NOW, given that more people are able to try it.

Good program generally, although I too have seen a couple of false positives. One of those blocked a system file of all things.

My main gripe really is that each time a new version of the program is released, it has to be manually downloaded, the old version uninstalled, the machine rebooted, then the new version installed. So although autoupdates are carried out daily, that doesn't extend to the main program. So that limits the user base to those capable of carrying out the above tasks in the right sequence. I know many home users who, if they were using the old version, would happily carry on using it until it dropped, blissfully unaware that it had been superceded by an update.

Some testimonials of Comodo BOClean praise it for finding malware their antivirus missed. Well, after it shut down a program I myself made because it said it was a trojan, I wonder if the malware BOClean finds are too often false positives. I believe Comodo should provide data on the risk of false positives and otherwise improve BOClean's sensitivity.

Seems to miss some common trojans im my test as well.

In its defense, most programs are falling down on the job these days. Few are able to find and identify trojans and other TRUE malware anymore - usually all they can find are the well-known adware type programs.

The type of torjans/malware that hackers are using to steal passwords, zombie the PC, etc, change their signatures and methods way too quickly for this type of software to detect.

The only protection is to not get the software on your system in the first place. I've started using a VMWare session to run anything even close to questionable.

It's funny how people rate things based on other's opinions opposed to personal experience and then pass it off as empirical! Anyway, that's another topic/diatribe.

I decided I'd try this program myself. I've successfully infected myself with a common trojan, Agobot with BOClean running. BOClean's list of "Covered Malware" claims it is aware of Agobot yet it does nothing as the trojan easily installs, executes itself and creates registry keys.

UNACCEPTABLE.

Does what it says, doesn't hog memory, and just works.
I have yet to see it find anything, but my system is running nice and smooth so there's no reason to suspect that my box is not clean.

No excuse for not having it? How about...it's crap? It mindlessly blows away "Downloaded Program Files" contents, Winsock registry keys and values, and other things. When this happens as a result of a false positive, you'll really be happy!

What's more, it has no self-protection whatsoever. In fact, it can be closed with a simple WM_CLOSE! The author was fond of giving psychobabble nonsensical reasons for this, but the real basis for this lack of critical functionality is that it's hard to implement properly.

"But hey! Why does BOClean need to be able to defend itself from being shut down? If malware capable of killing BOClean is executed, BOClean will stop it! Nah-nah-nah-NAH-nah!"

Ummm... What if that "malware" isn't known about when it first runs, and then a signature for it is added? If BOClean could have defended itself, the newly-added signature would at least let it detect the malware. But without that capability, it won't even be running--no chance to detect it down the line.

Like I said: Crap.

BoClean is a worthwhile addition to your security setup, and now free so now you have no excuse for not getting it.

I tried v4.23 and it has some bugs. Right click menu takes 5 minutes to open up. Sometimes it doesn't even pop up. When there is no internet connection - the s/w says it is shutting down? Why can't s/w continue to run and keep quite when internet connection is not available? Sometimes international internet connections not always available especially if you are roaming to other countries.

Although BOClean is listed as "Anti_Spyware, it is not like other AS software. It's neither fish nor fowl.

BOC delves into your file sharing, Security Zones, erases Temp folders, and even fiddles with your WinSock. I'm not so sure I like this. One little mistake, and BOC could really mess you up. For example, if your Winsock gets hosed, it's a major headache to repair. Also, your AV program relies on the Winsock, and it could inadvertently de-activate it.

Having said all that, it seems to be a very efficient, though a little too quiet for me. It just sits there in the Tray like a bump on a log. Never a peep out of it. I wish I could find some Spyware just to see how it reacts!

1/2 point off for delving too deeply into the system, and 1/2 point off for being too silent.

This is an unauthorized release of software that is not ready for public use. From the publishers of BOClean:

"BE ADVISED that this is *NOT* a release ... there may still be insects in the code despite all the testing done by a handful of very dedicated NSClean people who've tested our code now for years and know it inside out. But still, the problems which several reported here during this last test cycle were running code that had been tested and cleared as "ready" ... so if you're NOT in a position to rebuild your system in the event of any unknown "bad things" you really shouldn't play with this until some of the folks here have had a chance to blow up THEIR machine so YOU don't have to! White-knuckle rides are *not* the way we do things here. (grin)"

IT IS ADVISED THAT YOU DO NOT INSTALL THIS SOFTWARE. PERIOD

The 5 rating is for ver 4.23 which I am using and have high regard for.

So, you've tried them all?

After reading several security type forums, and seeing this program recommended over and over...I tried it.

I've yet to have ANY sort of malware get into my box.

This. Just. Works.

I've used BOClean for over five years, I'm amazed it's now become freeware. It's fit and forget software designed originally for use in the corporate sphere. It's ideal for the novice user, but the more advanced user might find the lack of 'twiddle' options annoying. It has saved by bottom on more than a few occasions, for which I'm more than grateful.

This is an interesting AS program, but it has a few quirks.

The Good: Small program size, simple install, simple, tidy GUI, simple config, realtime scanner, frequent and reliable updates.

The Bad: Large memory footprint, program windows are a little laggy, no scan on demand, no Explorer context menu, generally uncommunicative, making it hard for the unskilled computer user to grasp what the program is doing.

So far, I like the program. A tweak here, a tweak there, and it's truly first rate. Since the BOClean has been on the scene for a good while, I doubt there will be any changes forthcoming.

excellent app. been using it for years when you had to pay for it, now free so no excuse to not have it. Must be installed under user with admin privileges to work properly. A few small bugs with it working in Vista that are being fixed at this moment, but hopefully very soon a Vista ready version will be out too.
