You must give specific permission to some programs or Comodo will block them, as it should. The installation feels a bit heavy---I'm sure Melih would like it if you would install his AV component and geek buddy too, but you don't have to do that.

Comodo firewall... Yes, and one of the best around, although I find PrivateFirewall much better.
Comodo other products.. No, specially not their AV

However, I see that Comodo is trying to stick too much into their firewall, which needs some tweaking to disable them as they will only slow your computer down.

I'm afraid they are heading toward the same destination as most of softwares, making it bloated and full of useless things.

I don't understand why it's not secure at all as the list you're talking about is based on signed files.
did you ever install any malware digitally signed ?
comodo worked on a software more friendly as lot of people were lost with all the alerts they had to create rules, alerts for the firewall, alerts for Defense+, as they didnt know what to do with all those alerts.
now, comodo can run with a limited number of rules to create for common users that hate all those complicated softwares with tones of settings and alerts.
But what i like the best is that comodo is still configurable to have full control on the traffic with alerts for anything, so you create many rules for each process, or use predefined policies like "browser policy" or "ftp client" , "email client, outgoing only, trusted apps and blocked apps.
the defense+ is a powerfull security tool to monitor all files activities and decide what a file will be allowed to do on the system.
defense+ is protecting by default important files and folders, you can add your own files and folders rule, there's a default protected reg keys and you can also add your own keys you want to protect, there's a protected COM interfaces also configurable like you want.
and to help defense+ configuration, there's a sandbox where anything that's not part of trusted software vendors is launched sandboxed with a level of security you chose to run the file sandboxed. there are several levels of security from partially limited to blocked. setting blocked for unknown files is too high as the file cant run so just before blocked you have "untrusted files" that will launch the unknown file with not enough rights to corrupt your system.
the files unrecognized will stay into the sandbox as long as you decide about it. if you know the file, so it's not a problem, sometimes comodo doesnt know all softwares, and the unrecognized files sandboxed stored into a specific place are submitted to the cloud so, they're analysed and if they're unknown, after some days, they'll be classified as trusted or not,
even if you didnt install the AV, you got the cloud that will inform you about the unrecognized file.
this software is really great and needs to be tested, you can use the version with the AV, but I like comodo for his firewall and Defense+
I use a shareware as Antivirus to complete Comodo.

Great release! It just keeps getting better. Those accusing Comodo of being on the take from purveyors of spyware couldn't be more wrong. Comodo is highly aware there is a fine balance between too many alerts and letting in a few "undesirable programs" (but not true malware). All AV developers are faced with the same dilemma.

Comodo adds a 5th layer, rootkit detection. This suite is just incredible, and all the average person will ever need. They have even more advanced functionality in the works called DACS. It's a stunning development, and uses pooled definitions from most of the other AV developers.

Very competent security suite. Comodo has taken the advice of users, and chipped away at problems and deficiencies. All 4 layers of protection work great. It's fast and stable. The definitions are huge, but those of all good AV programs are these days. My favorite feature is, this suite is complete, and you don't need anything else for protection. If something gets through, you're not paying attention. The only problem is, it doesn't white list every legitimate software in the universe, but that's not realistic. I haven't heard it said, so I'll say it: Comodo is now as good as the top 3 commercial suites, while being less resource hungry and more pleasant to use. Thanks for listening Comodo, I will be donating!

I can't understand why this program can't use the previous version's data and has to update its database as if it were being installed for the first time. I updated from 4.x to 5.x and had to set it to learning mode. The sandbox didn't work (froze my system ... even the clock) so I disabled it until I can try a future version. The antivirus update required approximately 12 minutes to update. I'm giving it a 4 because of the sandbox freezing my system otherwise the remainder seems to work fine. Seems a bit slower but might be because I decided to try out the antivirus and have only been using the firewall and defense+ prior to this update/version.
UPDATE: Am uninstalling this version, lowering my rating, and am going to try to revert back to prior version because this one has rendered my computer unusable at times.

Now at version 5, I see nothing wrong with this Internet security suite. It's a 4 part suite, the only complete Freeware suite I know of. Comodo's responsiveness to features, bugs, and false positives are as good as any commercial AV. The hit accuracy is now right up there with the best commercial AV's. The GUI is quick, light on resources, and polished. Over the past several months, I have had wishes and a few problems, but now have none. Comodo has addressed every single problem and wish. Do try this program, and if you find something wanting, just let Comodo know.

This is good software. Probably the best of its kind. But I quickly uninstalled it.

@anomoly. Like you I have ended my chase for the latest and greatest firewall. it's a never ending cycle that's not worth the time invested.

I used to go back and forth between Comodo and Outpost (paid version). Either they were memory hogs or had periodic problems during booting up my PC. Security is very important. But, egged on by testing sites like www.matousec.com you can invest a lot of time and money in switching to the best firewall only to discover that three months later it has security holes. So I have permanently switched to a combination of PC Tools (because it's light on resources and can alert me to software that phones home), as well as closely policing sites with java script and using OpenDNS servers behind my router. In combination, those tools have kept virtually all malware and other Internet nastiness at bay.

Would be nice if it would use the old configuration files when you update instead of deleting them during installation and having to start from scratch and have to relearn everything. I would like to see an option to be reminded that protection is disabled after nn minutes. Not a major problem for me but the installation messages were sometimes hiding behind the initial installation screen that shows the progress and I had to pull it to the side to continue working with the current message which should have focus. I can't easily find a place to make changes to the settings once I choose an answer, in particular the sandbox.

Blocks everything I throw at it when testing and allows only what I want to access the network. For a free program Comodo should be given a look see by those seeking a great free firewall.

For those complaining about the options I have found them to be straight forward but then again I do not install programs and then not look at how to use them.

I don't really understand where Comdo think they're going with v4* of this product. The introduction of the sandbox is very poorly implemented and instead of enhancing security, seems to do the exact opposite.

In addition to the 'sandbox' component, the security settings need to be examined very carefully. Certain configuration choices result in rules that potentially allow all communication out. Make sure you select the 'Proactive' option, if you don't, check your firewall rules before venturing onto the Web.

The 'new' web based installer is a bit of a joke, requiring the removal of any existing third party firewall, before downloading this version.

The context sensitive help has been removed from each dialogue box and replaced with a link to their 'live support' operation. Incidentally, the installer now downloads and installs PC Live support without requiring any sort of confirmation. Fortunately, it can be easily removed.

The installer now almost rams their Hopsurf toolbar down your throat and also reintroduces the option to install Ask as your default search engine. All of which are optional, but I'd prefer to have the default set to opt-out and not opt-in.

The interface is still as confusing as ever, if not more so with the added features. the colour is a terrible choice, with no alternatives available with the shipped product to change it. Also, there is no way to clear the log files, without manually resorting to deleting files.

Personally, I think version v4 is a retrograde step. 3.14 had just about reached stability, but instead of simply building on that base and perhaps incorporating ideas from their user base, they 'threw together' this far to hastily released version.

if you like this security suite, I'd stay with 3.14 for now, and if you need a sandbox, use something like sandboxie.

The bugs are 99% fixed. CIS is fairly stable now. This is a firewall + HIPS + AV + sandbox combo. When installing you have 3 options: (1) install it all, (2) install AV only, (3) install all components EXCEPT the AV.

If you use CIS, I suggest option #3 because the CIS AV is still a very weak sister. (Better free AVs include Avast & Avira Personal).

Once you install, you can use the sandbox or not use it -- your choice.

The HIPS component is D+. I find it "weird" to configure -- not "difficult" but "weird". However, it's configured adequately (not "good" but "adequately") right out of the box.

Protection is VERY good, but CIS is a fuss-budget at times -- i.e., lots of pop-ups from time to time.

I rate it at "4" because there are other similar type combos/suites which are more powerful, & are more intuitive to configure. However, they are NON-free. I will name just 2 such examples (both rate 5 stars):

1- Online Armor & Sandboxie

2- DefenseWall version 3 & Avast

OK, so I like the new one quite a LOT.. except.. ITS SO BLOODY BUGGY!.. The sandbox feature is a real pain as it causes lots of programs to crash when starting so I had to turn that one off..
It worked fine for about 12 hours but after that every few minutes I get a white rectangle in the middle of the screen as if a splashscreen was supposed to be there, but it never goes away.
Looking in the taskmanger theres no indication that anything in comodo has locked up. I thought there might be something conflicting so I installed it on my Acer Aspire 2930 notebook with absolutely NOTHING except windows 7 home premium 64bit and the current set of windowsupdate patches.. left it for like.. 14 hours and the white square had appeared there as well..

If I click the white square (that is on top of EVERYTHING else) windows instantly throws up a box (behind the white box) asking if I wanna close the app, go online and check for a solution or wait.. touch any option and comodo immediately exits.

A slider control on a sandbox is too weird, and this sandbox has BUGS. Yikes!
Do not install the AV Component and set the HIPS to max.
It passed ShieldsUp and PCFlank.
Without the AV component running it consumes very little cpu/mem, which of course is nice.
Any free firewall that scores 100% on the Matousec tests, doesn't BSOD, and takes it easy on resources earns a five.

CIS is a very nice, very complete security suite. Really no major complaints at all. It can be a little busy when first installed, but settles down after you teach it your normal apps. Install and uninstall go very quickly and work glitch free. It runs smoothly and doesn't seem to slow things down at all.

The only minor complaint I have is the tool bar and web search it installs by default, but you can easily opt out during install. (I advise you to do so) 1/2 point off for that!

Try it, you'll like it.

Very complete, functional, light, and useful Internet security suite. Each module works well. The firewall will inexplicably lock out networking and some Internet programs on occasion, but you can un block them. I will never understand why the developer shoots himself in the foot. The current 3.6 user rating would go up 1 point all over the Internet if only he would un check the unrelated
programs during the install process. That's all that keeps it from being a 9 out of 10. Recommended, but do un-check the tool bar, home page, and search options during install.

I've tried a bunch of firewalls, for the past few years, and am currently using this as my firewall because: 1) very low memory footprint, 2) next to no noticeable CPU usage as a percentage of total CPU time, 3) Defense+ not only catches new processes trying to run themselves or new processes but even creating new directories, 4) firewall defends against DOS attacks, 5) I can set it to install mode and it will remind me if I forget to return it to its previous mode, and 6) a bunch of others too numerous to list here and it is hard to find another product with all these grouped into one firewall/malware defense program. The only thing I would ask for is a reminder to take it out of learning mode and a better virus scanner (I don't use it -- takes 2.5 minutes just to scan my desktop -- I'd hate to imagine 100s of gigabytes). If they do, it should check entire disk including MBR. -1 only for the virus scanner -- remainder is top notch. Awesome program if they can address the virus section.

I dislike the fact that Comodo AntiVirus is only available now as part of this bundle, but it's easy to deselect the Firewall during setup, and the Firewall isn't bad if you don't already have something else you prefer. There is very little nagging about upgrading to their Pro edition, and Comodo's Hopsurf Toolbar (replacing the Ask toolbar which they previously included) is still easily deselected with no further nagging. Comodo recently added their own secure DNS but I prefer OpenDNS. For now at least, Comodo's DNS isn't selected by default so it's just an extra click on Next. Comodo's default mode (Clean PC) is a tad bit more "in your face" with overly cautious prompts than I would like, but it's comparable to what you'd expect to see with consumer editions of McAfee, Norton, etc. Performance has been fairly good in recent releases, but one weak area is DOS apps. If you've got a lot of legacy real-mode DOS executables, Comodo AV tends not to like it. It's OK to have text-based console mode Win32 apps (which basically look like DOS programs but don't require real-mode) but true DOS stuff makes Comodo freak out in ways that I can't seem to suppress or bypass. This release fixes a fairly stupid bug which caused Comodo AV to interfere with Windows Updates.

@ Second Shadow: The reason Comodo added the toolbar has absolutely nothing to do with money or keeping there software free, it has to do with adding there buffer overflow sandboxing to protect a browser from being hijacked, that is all, nothing more nothing less! Since they have now added it to CIS they no longer needed the toolbar, but have since changed the toolbar over to using there HopSurf instead, but as before its still optional, so I wish people get there facts straight including that rathole called Softpedia, who have for the last 2-3 years been as crappy and un-trustworthy as CNET, but thats another story :)

Oh to get you using your brain on this adware rubbish, try looking at other software for a change, like CCleaner, ATI Catalyst, Adobe products, or even MS Messanger.......then maybe people like you will stop this crap about Comodo and adware!!

Second Shadow

Second Shadow reviewed v3.10.101801.529 on Jul 4, 2009

When Comodo first started bundling the adware toolbar, Comodo Antivirus detected the toolbar as Malware. Take a look:
http://www.calendarofupd...p;type=post&id=6114

Priceless :)

Anyway, to noonelives below, Comodo really doesn't need to bundle an advertising toolbar in order to be able to keep their software free. They're big enough of a company (do some research and you'll see) and, by their own admittance, "Comodo's main revenue comes from authenticating web business with SSL certificates". See: http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/whyfree.html

EDIT:

To Ajay2k above:

Uh, uh, calm down, buddy, no need to get personal here :)
I beg to disagree, the reason Comodo added the toolbar has EVERYTHING to do with money. That's what a member of the Comodo Staff said in their forums: "This is just giving our users a choice in their search engine choice and making Comodo some money. " (source: http://forums.comodo.com...tml;msg162838#msg162838). See? ;)
And since you mentioned "Buffer Overflows", let me mention that the Ask Toolbar has some buffer overflow problems of its own: "Joey Mengele has discovered a vulnerability in Ask Toolbar, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system." (source: http://secunia.com/advisories/26960/). Reassuring, isn't it?
And please don't tell me that you actually believe that HopSurf has nothing to do with Ask Networks Inc.; it belongs to them! Take a look at what they say in the HopSurf EULA: "7.2.If you wish to remove and uninstall HopSurf from your computer, click on the "Start" button; then click on the "Settings" button, then click on the "Control Panel" button, then click on the "Add or Remove Programs" button, then look for "Ask Toolbar" and click on the "Change/Remove" button." That's right, no typo there, crystal clear: "Ask Toolbar" (source: http://www.hopsurf.com/license.jsp). Need I say more?

I could go on, Ajay2k, and I could start calling you names, but I won't. Just make sure you know what you're talking about before personally attacking people for their statements.

I don't like the 3.x versions. Interface is a regression from the version 2.x. Too bad 2.x had major stability problems. This version hids the programs in the "Network Security Policy" which normal people wouldn't know to look. Zone Alarm is better in this respect in that the programs listed are in plain view but again, stability issues also affect it too. "View Firewall Events" are pretty lousy too as it only lists what was blocked. What if you had accidentally clicked to allow a program to run? Well, good luck remembering what you clicked since that information won't be listed in the events.

As for the anti-virus, it has a lot (and I do mean A LOT) of false positives. You better hope you know what you're doing since it listed some everyday Windows programs as being infected.

Just 2 days ago I tried to install Online Armor Free on a XP machine and it would not even finish the install, freezing at the Wizard.
Virtually no slowdowns, very configurable, awesome support and community. As for the other components, the antivirus is very new and has some room to be improved, the HID component is very good but a bit chatty for my taste. If you look for a firewall, look no further!
The issue that there's a Safe Surf/Ask Toolbar Component in the installer is minor at best, since you can always chose to not install it, and anyone using a firewall product should pay attention to the prompts anyway. Adware for me is installing annoying stuff without asking for consent, which doesn't happen here.

This is a good release. There will always be better and worse releases in this type of software, because it is so broad.

In the last 2-3 releases, CIS's AV definitions have stepped it up a notch. My Jotti.org tests show that it catches everything that the others catch. Some (AVG comes to mind) miss some malware that Comodo identifies. So now the complaint that the AV definitions are weak doesn't wash. Try it yourself on Jotti.org.

5 stars for the Firewall and Defense + , this should be the centre piece of your security set up, and soon to include BoClean as well.
Yes the antivirus has a bit of a way to go to prove itself. However to say "Seems like an awful lot of Comodo's employees posting reviews. No one who has ever used their AV could possibly give this a high rating ... unless they are being paid to do so!" as a previous poster has said is completely ridiculous. Going by that type of assumption are we to assume that all negative comments are written by employees of Symantec, Nod, Avast, Avira, and the like.

I had used it for the last 3days. everything seems fine, did not slow down my system(in fact better then my previous paid Mcafee Internet Security 08). Must b patience with the alert and go through everything, then now there is very much less alert today. I would recommend to all but you must have patience, As for the AV, I think is OK as it is able to detect 1 which mcafee and other online scanner are unable to detect.

If you read the Comodo forum you will see over 20 pages of bug reports on the various facets of this program. C'mon now folks, does anyone really believe these are mostly user problems caused by "poorly configured computers and OSs"? And who runs a computer without 3rd party software? Let's be realistic, Comodo has many problems to solve before this program can be safely used.

With regard to fixing problems promptly, the TuneUp Utilities alerts were first reported to Comodo several weeks ago.

I think for myself this software is over rated greatly and I had nothing but allot of trouble with it where I did not with other software. It is not easy to configure or work with at all and a new person would have difficulty. I also do not like the fact that many companies are integrating firewalls, anti virus etc together. I like them separated, I think they are better that way.

Here are the changes for this update:

FIXED! AV engine crashes while scanning some files
FIXED! Firewall blocks all the traffic in some vista PCs when checksum verification is enabled
FIXED! Some applications consume 100% CPU while CIS is installed

I don't have the above issues, but still get 68 FPs and still can't defrag until AV is disabled. And to add a little insult, this update added a second identical entry to the startup files list. Avast! will be handling COMODO's AV duties until that portion of the program becomes dependable.

Morningdove

Morningdove reviewed v3.8.64263.468 on Feb 14, 2009

I just finished a full virus scan of 162,753 files. 68 false positives were reported with heuristics turned on and the same number when turned off. Many of the FPs were TuneUp Utilities files which were previously reported.

I do like CIS, but verifying 68 files is just too much! How can one be *really* sure of every single file? I am starting to feel like I am my own AV program. And don't forget about the users out there that are taking these alerts at face value.

Finally, it is still necessary to disable AV to prevent interfering with disk defragmenting even though COMODO was notified prior to the release of v3.8. This is not a universal problem. Avast! does handle it properly.

Perhaps using CIS firewall and Defense+ with a different AV program would solve these problems if no other solutions become available.

COMODO doesn't appear to be in a hurry to remove these AV errors even though a "new" database is downloaded daily. Judging from their forum, they may have their hands full trying to solve other program problems.

The Defense +, Antivirus (Yes, you read it right. I activated the antivirus module and it has no angst whatsoever with the beforementioned security applications) and Firewall are amazingly seamless in operation. The Firewall module sees all inbound and outbound activity. Both Comodo Antivirus and Avast cover spywares and other malwares as well.

The best free security suite to date and I shall make no apologies. I am a hard to please person and I had been seriously testing practically all security applications known to the computer users, free or paid.

The antivirus is terrible. Slow, low detection rate, many false positives and generally not a finished or properly working product. A bad antivirus is worse than no antivirus at all. You feel safe when you're not.

The firewall is pretty good (one of the better free firewalls).

The HIPS, host intrusion prevention system, is actually one of the better ones. Even compared to commercial products.

Any administration past "leave as it was when installed" level is pretty much a nightmare. The UI is cluttered, counter-intuitive and difficult to configure properly. Documentation is lacking.

If they improve the antivirus, documentation and UI this might be a great product, right now it's just 'meh' and you install a proper antivirus. Then a proper firewall that you can configure without sobbing in your beer.
All this defeats the purpose of an "Internet Security" package and will only get 3/5. The firewall/HIPS get 5/5.

blahman2005, my god, you're right! Now if only Dell, HP, Compac, IBM and all the rest would just stop making all these damn computers, then we wouldn't need any of these pesky programs!

Think before you say something stupid next time.

----------------------------------------------------

I agree with the general consensus on here -- Comodo Firewall is a terrific freeware security product. If they could get their AV up to the same standard, this would be an outstanding security suite.

However, after briefly running a clean install of CIS I started getting the incredibly obnoxious Google "Error 403 (http://www.google.com/se...=google+error+403)"; whenever I did a Google search. After uninstalling CIS and reverting to a clean install of CFP, no more "Error 403".

So, to summarize:

+5 stars for a great firewall and for a clean packaging of a suite.

-1 star for a sub-par AV.

-1 star for the "Error 403" nonsense.

Despite a lukewarm rating, I think this product has great potential and will watch its development closely.

Although I think CIS is great so far, I'm disappointed that they chose to mention an "upgrade application" when none seem to exist... like the user below I wasted precious minutes looking for it.

As a workaround, you can export your CFP settings, uninstall CFP, install CIS, then import your saved settings to CIS... that worked for me.

billdehaan

billdehaan reviewed v3.5.53896.424 on Oct 25, 2008

I've been impressed with Comodo Firewall, so I tried to install this. The upgrade was completely impenetrable. Unfortunately, CIS cannot install if you have Comodo Firewall.

If you try, you get a message telling you that you have two options. You can uninstall CPF, lose all your configuration information, and start from scratch. Or, you can go to www.comodointernetsecurity.com, and "download an upgrade application which will upgrade existing installation to COMODO Internet Security". The application isn't named, and no link is supplied.

Of course, their web site does not mention any such application. The word "upgrade" doesn't appear in the release notes for CIS. The CIS user guide doesn't acknowledge any such upgrade process, either. And five minutes of hunting through their support forums and download lists turns up nothing, either.

CIS may be better than CFP for new users, but current CPF users are better off waiting until an upgrade process appears, I think.

@bobad this CIS is now final. :)

Anyway, This is the only and first free Security Suite offering you 3 layers of Security: Firewall, Defense+ (HIPS) and the Antivirus. You can install COMODO Firewall & COMODO Antivirus using the same setup, the Antivirus is COMODO Antivirus 3 (CAV 3), and is still young, But that's why you can choose not to install it if you wish and keep your existing AV. :) I am sure over time, the AV will mature and I believe in that as a Global Moderator on the forums.

CIS 3.5 also has less pop ups, and is more stable and responsive to Alerts, and It will only get better because in the future, BOClean will be integrated, Along with Sandbox to reduce pop ups even further! CIS has potential, So my final ratings are:

Firewall: 5
Defense+: 5
Antivirus: 3

I give it 5 because you choose to opt out anything, and customize CIS to max.

Finally, a usable Freeware security package. It has everything you need, and runs fast and reliably.

The only downgrade is for the configuration being a little bit too complex. I think most users by far will be overwhelmed by the confusing array of options that could easily be condensed into a more user friendly form. If you're a geek like me, you'll love it just as it is.

The firewall and AS module are great, the rules-based AV still has a way to go. Since there are 3 layers of security, the weak rules are more than compensated for. Remember the program is still in beta, and the rules will improve quickly. Give it a 4.5/5, and a big thanks to Comodo. Thanks Melih!

simply the best security app for xp and vista.
bad luck for competitors : it's a freeware.
i dont use the antivirus.
firewall and defense+ installed.
defense+ will prevent user from malwares undetected by most AV.
and AV unable to detect new malwares is so important, if it's going on like that, AV will become totaly useless.
i find undetected malwares all the time, but on virustotal.com, there are always 5 engines on 36 able to detect dangerous code.
my AV fails often, i send the code, they send a tanks reply and update the base fast but it's time for me to change my engine.
certainly F-secure cause it's always there to alert about malwares as the wellknown AV used by most people fail all the time.
defense+ shows me what will do the file if i would decide to allow it. and at the moment, this type of protection, prevention, is showing the failure of detection protection, u're alerted about what will do the file as detection just says it detected no danger. so if u trust your AV uptodate when it tells u the file is ok, u're completly wrong, most of AV are easy to bypass, just search on google how u can bypass AV detection with packagers especially here to make AV scanning impossible with lines code that send AV from line to line thousand times so if the AV doesnt stop the scan, the operation would never stop and possibly crash the engine so the AV decides to stop the scan and tells u no virus detected instead of inform u it was unable to scan the file.
if u think i'm just telling craps, i can send u any known virus repacked and u'll see your engine unable to detect it. then when u'll launch the file, u'll see it was no craps, the prob is, if it's some very bad code, your kernel will be corrupted so deep with hidden process, hidden regkeys, always changing, able to hide in the cpu then the acpi module of your bios when u turn off the machine so when u turn on, the rootkit is loaded before the OS and will totaly control the system. this type of rootkit is so hard to clean that it's almost impossible to say, ok i cleaned my machine 100%. the sure way is to reinstall your OS or use backup apps very often so u can recover to a clean system saved the day before the problem. for my part, i can't even tell if my machines are 100% safe. there are so many new ways that come all the time to corrupt a system,
so use comodo FW with Defense+, use an antispyware, use the AV u like, and always go to virustotal.com to upload the file even if your AV says it's ok. 36 engines will scan the file, and some will alert u, when the malware is really new, never more than 5 engines give the alert.
take care, especially the p2p addict users, it's full of virus, cracks, keygens, are the best way to contaminate your machine. try the wellknown sites releasing new apps with a crack or keygen and send it to virustotal.com, u'll see how huge is the problem.

First: start with the premise that this is truly FREE software.

I've used many of the parallel products on the market, all commercial, with some being quite expensive. Some of the best feature a slightly sharper anti-malware or anti-virus function, often with more frequent updating. As for the firewall function itself, I am comfortable holding it up against any of the commercial products for comparison.

Two things I really like: (1) services and resident programs can be shutdown to minimize drain on the system while playing local games, processing sound files, or transferring large numbers of files. I have found no other program that allows such a trimming-down for local safe activities. (2) there are no 'reminders' during daily operation that there exist more powerful or feature-laden versions of the 'free' product, such as pop-ups while updating, etc.

Conceptually, Comodo asks that users support various revenue-producing programs to keep the software free. These are ALL optional, including search page, etc. To the best of my knowledge, there is nothing tricky happening here, simply trying to generate revenue through methods that are transparent and harmless to the user. Why do you think Firefox defaults to their own home/search page?

By RC2 this was quite bug-free, and I have had no conflicts with either SpyBot or Ad-Aware, both of which I continue to run resident.

"If you opt-out of the AV & tool bar, & avoid the Plus stuff[...]"

I second that comment. Just be careful when
installing, and do not install the toolbar, do not
sign up for the plus version. I wouldnt recommend
using the AV either, but feel free if you want to e.g. as a secondary "backup" scanner)... I
wouldn't use it as my primary AV.

That being said, the FIREWALL ist top-notch,
definitely the best one you can get right now, be
it free or paid.

My Ratings:

Firewall: 5+
Antivirus: 3
Toolbar: 0

This is a free suite of security applications. The main ones...

*Firewall -- excellent! a 5

*Defense+ -- this is a "classical" HIPS. Very powerful. The default settings are a bit weak. Skilled users should check them carefully. If tightly configured, I give this a 5

*Antivirus -- it's been re-done. The scan engine is better, but its heuristics are not there. Not there at all. Also, its Signatures database is still deficient in comparison with top tier AV programs. The Comodo AV is NOT ready for prime time. Not at all! a 2

During installation, you can opt out of installing the AV. I recommend that you do so. (Use a different AV - such as Avira or Avast).

Also, do not accidentally sign up for the "Plus" (non-free) add-on. It is not worth paying for.

Also beware the tool bar (a sort of spyware) -- the opt-out is hard to spot because they WANT you to miss it. My recommendation: do NOT miss it; opt-out of the tool bar for sure!

If you opt-out of the AV & tool bar, & avoid the Plus stuff, then I give this security app a 5. But with the AV & the tool bar, I rate it a weak 3. I shall post the 5 because you WILL be careful, right? (^_^)
