Banquo, I haven't tried the software, but if I understand things correctly, what you pay for is the support that you get with your license. The project is indeed based on Wine, and I wouldn't mind it if they used the MySQL approach with free use while keeping paid support instead of the trial period. Open Source would surely help bring COLinux further more rapidly, and companies would still pay to get their support.

What would be really nice is if Parallels would update their Workstation virtual PC product to enable seamless running of Windows programs like they are planning for the Mac. I've tried Crossover in the past and haven't had much luck running any Windows multimedia programs. Unfortunately companies such as Parallels and VMware are taking forever to get good hardware 3D and 2D acceleration in their Linux products.

Wine is the core of CodeWeavers. What the company does is take Wine (the OpenSource program) and actually improve upon it so that they can make the statement that X program will run on CodeWeavers. Wine is still hit or miss when it comes to running of some programs. So yeah, Wine may be free, but if you're running a business that needs to run Microsoft Office and guarantee 100% compatability, then paying for CodeWeavers is usually a good investment.

Because this works.

Wine is a crap shoot.

Why would someone pay $40 for this when it's based off Wine which is completely free?
