I really liked this program. But I am so tired of waiting for it. I decided to go back to Aulogic's Defrag. I was able to turn the priority from normal to high and it is done in under a hour compared to 24 hours.... Both at the slowest, best defrag option.

I'll happily stay with ultra defrag. I'm sure defraggler does a good job, but I'm not getting any younger and i can't wait until my next birthday for it to defrag drive:c And, I dpon't want to waste time picking and choosing files to defrag. Bottom line is that it's remarkably slow. Even "quick defrag" is remarkably not quick. Now, back to Ultra.

Works fine up to now, even if lacks defrag on boot. I was searching for a free alternative to PerfectDisk (never managed to receive v. 12.5 updated license keys I was entitled to), and I think this is a jackpot in its category. Just defraged system disk, seems to have done a nice job.

I am a MyDefrag acolyte, but I found it quite effective.

Comparing to MyDefrag, this program shines into handling file with some access restrictions (user access rights).

If you don't like the installer (i always saw confirmation to install Chrome), you can always get the portable version.

Defraggler/Periform has taken a turn that is not acceptable to this user.

In past updates and installs you were given the opportunity to opt-out either in advance setting mode or after the initial install of Defraggler to install or not install Goggle Chrome.

Changed in this version is an additional automatic download in the background of chrome and no chance to say no to this unwanted browser install.

Not only is this unwanted but unacceptable by Piriform to shove this down any users throat and computer pipeline.

I am uninstalling all Piriform products and will not recommend to any of my colleagues, fellow bloggers, and social network friends of many years.

My rating is a one.

Wow. They've got boot-time defrag in this now. I'm impressed - how many versions did that take to appear? Anyway, Defraggler's free, but there's at least three other programs better than it out there - MyDefrag, Puran, Auslogics. Go with Puran if you want a GUI, MyDefrag if you want everything, and Auslogics if you want something more or less the same as Defraggler, but faster. And PerfectDisk if you want something reliable you can set and forget on your biz servers. We ran PD on our intranet server at work for years without a problem.

They just should manage larger disc in the future or build a 64 bits version. I've for example a volume with more than 156.000.000 fragments and defraggler crashes in this case because the 32 bits version of defraggler can't handle the memory allocations.

I had pretty much the same experience as Hilbert with this thing. I've had various versions of about five defraggers on my PC for years. Defraggler has always been one that plenty of people have considered a fantastic product but it just doesn't live up to the hype. Pure and simple, the product ALWAYS leaves some sort of gaps. Maybe all it's doing is trying to make all your files contiguous but if that leaves files floating in space near the slower portion of your drive, it's pretty stupid. They've only JUST got a boot-time defrag feature (other packages have had this for YEARS) and are all waving their hands about it on the site. And updated graphics too? So what? Once again I tried this version and it left gaps. Any other shortcomings are moot to me. If it leaves gaps (that I didn't ask for), it didn't defragment the drive.

I guess I'll throw out that I now consider MyDefrag the best defragmenter. I had problems with it on an older PC, but none now on a Win7 x64 box with a decently fast boot drive and more RAM. That one's free too, and allows you complete programmatic control of where you can have files placed. It does boot-time defrag too, by taking drives "offline" (just as PerfectDisk does). It doesn't defrag upon reboot, but I'm not sure I care about that. I'm also fortunate that my company gave me a spare license for PerfectDisk 10 for personal use - that one's a package I'd always recommend for set-and-forget defragmenting. *IT* defragments the drive and DOESN'T leave ragged chunks of free space. I trust my boot drive to PerfectDisk with StealthPatrol, and use MyDefrag to stuff around with my other twelve partitions.

As for Puran, I still like it. It's better than Defraggler, and it's had boot-time for well over a year.

Defraggler doesn’t finish the job, which is truly annoying.

This is not a locked file issue either, for when it's finished defragging, if you go into the 'File List' mode you will invariably see all these still-fragmented files. If you select them you can then defrag them all manually (with a few notable exceptions such as the usual icon cache file problem).

If the files are NOT locked and I can defrag them manually, why the hell doesn’t the program do it during the actual defrag? It's not that this is beta software issue either; Defraggler has behaved like this from its first version and every point release in between.

(The argument about any remaining fragmented files not having any effect on performance is not the point, which is that the program is supposed to be a file defragger and thus it should defragment them unless file-locked.)

Other Defraggler Limitations:
--------------------------------------

* Doesn't defrag directories

* Won't defrag more than one drive at a time.

* Cannot schedule a low-priority/background or normal mode to start after so many minutes of inactivity (programs or keyboard). That means when you leave the PC for say 10 minutes it would start automatically and stop the moment you hit the next key.

* Doesn't do contiguous file packing on disks for archiving.

* Doesn’t pack directories or put them at predefined locations on disk (FAT anyway).

* When Defraggler doesn't or can't defrag files it gives no reason or explanation of why those files cannot be defragged. This is most annoying to say the least.

* Moreover, there are files which are NOT locked that it simply will not defrag for some reason (try another defragger and it'll have no problems defragging the same file(s)).

* Doesn’t seem to defrag the MFT.

* Doesn’t have a facility to set different optimizing algorithms (optimal file location etc.) for different types of jobs (O/S drive, data drive, archive etc.).

* The 'Defrag Free Space' is like the ordinary defrag mode, it only half does the job. When finished, it leaves many files throughout the so-called 'defragged free space'. If you want this defragged space to be clear for say a multi-gigabyte .BKF file then you really don’t have a defragged space to put it in.

* Moreover, even on drives where the free space is many times the used space (i.e. no sorting space limitations), Defraggler will still not fully defrag the free space. Defraggler's designers have to be perverse and or incompetent as the program simply doesn't do what it's supposed to do.

Proof test: simply run another defragger (Windows Disk Defragmenter will do) when Defraggler has finished a "Defragment Free Space" and see how long or how many files are moved from the so-called free space area.

[BTW I'm not confusing Defraggler's non-contiguous packing with the free space area nor that Disk Defragmenter's algorithm is different and will repack Defraggler's packing anyway -- what I'm specifically referring to is what ought to be a contiguous block of free space at the end of the main file body (or groups) but which isn't.

RULE: After running Defraggler ALWAYS remember to run the Windows Disk Defragmenter to finish the job! Ha, right, the program's a joke.

Defraggler is nigh on useless!! (Unless I've missed the point and not realized it's some form of Piriform ad gimmick.)

The only real reason for using this program is that the defrag display looks better than the default Windows one.

As they say, yuh don’t get much for nothin'.

dhry - You list Puran Defrag as better than this. Agreed boot time defrag is a good option to have. I tried Puran defrag twice on two separate machines, one running WinXP-SP3 and then on Win7HPx64, and on both occasions, my OS was corrupted beyond repair. I don't use any special software. Just the usual stuff. That is just the reason why it is better to stick with tried and tested software, when you decide to fiddle with the the innards of any OS. I can vouch for Defragger, as I have used it without any issues before.

To verify my claim, try out their so called PIOZR technology option in Puran Defrag when you use boot time defragmentation, on whatever OS you are using, and then get back with your comments. To be sure, just make sure you make a disk image just in case.

Fairly good, stable program. I'd rank this third, behind MyDefrag and PuranDefrag. Puran 7 is free and has a boot-time defragger as well as layout.ini support and auto background defragging if you so choose. Oh, and right-click support to defrag any given dir. MyDefrag, while it still has bugs and is slow as heck to do its initial analyze on a decently-full boot drive, is the most customizable of all the defraggers and frankly I prefer it's graphic interface, it's about the lightest visual you can get short of text-only. Defraggler still misses out on a couple of basic things - boot-time system file defragging is one, plus layout.ini support, and the ability to choose simple file zones (directories first, then least/moderate/recently-used files, for example [like in PerfectDisk]). It is still missing a real optimization function like other defrag programs like MyDefrag have, and the automated scheduler could use some tweaking (especially selecting multiple drives at once, not only one at a time).

Otherwise, the GUI is pretty appealing, especially for a freeware program. Usage is straightforward and easy. Defrag process seems to be fast and efficient, so if you can live with missing optimization options (-1 star for that), this is a good choice.

Strange issue. I have two discs. The first one divided into two partitions. Defraggler reports that that there is not enough space in D: (less than 5% free space) for normal defrag, however, in fact almost 22% of the HDD is free. And I have no problem with the defragmentation. Cry wolf!

Issues: Extended defrag times, and disappearing HDD space during defrag.

Solution: Disable System Restore and the Pagefile (may require reboot) Defrag - re-enable System restore and Pagefile.

They *really* need to "lock" system restore while defragging to solve this glitch. The pagefile thing is just a preference, really.

Do the above, however, and it will work flawlessly for almost all.

(This does *not* apply to single-file or selection-mode defrag, it will work fine for that without the above steps.)

I have used this on multiple PC's with Vista, and it never works. It will run for over 12 hours on a recently installed disk and make hardly a dent in what for any other program is only minor fragmentation. If you want to work your hard drive to death and do absolutely nothing - use this program.

This software allows you to defrag specific files rather than defragging the entire hard drive. You may find this advantageous if you can not wait for the entire drive to be finished. Microsoft's buitl in software is very good, but does not have this advantage.

Defraggler is a single purpose utility that does it's intended job very quickly, both analyzing and defragmenting selected files. As such, it cannot be fairly compared to full featured programs such as PerfectDisk and Diskeeper, but should be considered as a companion to be used along with those programs when a quick defrag of a few files is desired, which in my case is most of the time.

Defraggler is awesome. Very cool how you can select individual files to defrag (so you can specifically defragment large game directories on your HD and leave the rest alone). As for UltraDefrag, you have GOT to be joking. This sentence from their homepage alone is a dealbreaker: "If you see 'Blue Screen Of Death' as result of UltraDefrag working then include important parts of messages on them."

If you see 'Blue Screen Of Death' while your system is defragmenting, can.. can anyone tell me what that means in terms of your data integrity?

Yeah the amd64 bin.exe as I am on an athlon 2800. The exe including so-called portable version is apparently not a win32 ap? whatever.

Does a good job for a freeware, but does not move frequently used files to the beginning of the disk. So even though it will defragment, it'll take some time for windows to prefetch all your files again. Could do well with some optimization strategies.

I have 2 IDE WD hard drives installed workds on one that I have Vista and linux on but fails on the one I have XP on my triple boot machine.

An adequate defrag program, does not have boot time or compact mode which are essential for good performance. For a real free defragment program for windows, try the open source ultradefrag which does have compact and boot time modes.

The changes to the GUI are unwelcome. Now the Defragment button can be used only for defragging the whole drive, not for defragging just the fragmented files, which for me is the main purpose of this program. Also, there is now a pie chart showing free disk space - I don't need this program to give me that information.

With all the defrag programs around, you wouldn't have thought that a new one could make an impact; but this one certainly does. It's amazingly fast, at both analysing and defragging. The GUI is neat and businesslike. The new free-space defrag option is also very welcome, and likewise goes through like an express train. I'm still keeping PerfectDisk for weekly offline defragging of the pagefile and system files, but for daily online tidying up this is ideal.

Love this little app. It's portable (just throw the .exe on a flash drive and yer golden), it's fast, and it's thorough.

I defragged a 250 GB drive about half full and fairly heavily fragmented in, well, not sure, but it was certainly less than 30 minutes. :)

I also like that it lists every file and how many fragments each has. I haven't seen that in any other defragger I've tried. Add boot defrag and this would be nearly perfect. Oh, and get rid of that status window and put that info in the status bar or something. ;)

Downloaded this program and installed it and gave it a try. I set it to defrag the entire 300 gig hard drive. Within 10 minutes it reached 49% of defragmentation. Thirty minutes later it finally moved to 50%. After 90 minutes it was still at 50%. I clicked to stop the process and that point I was informed that the defragmentation had been completed. This program still needs some work.

My follow-up this report is that I did another defrag later in the evening and it completed in approximately 15 minutes. The point is that it did complete this time and showed 100%. I'll bump it up a number based on that. I'm still puzzled by my first try.

It seems to defrag, so it gets at leas ta 3....

But two BIG problems:

First, it uses 100% of my CPU - on both cores of a dual core Opteron 2.8ghz chip!

Second, it is incredibly slow. A defrag of my system drive, which wasn't very fragmented to begin with normally takes less than an hour with any other defrag util. It went on for 12 hours, and when I came back - it was only at 50%!!

Unacceptable. The command-line Contig program is better than this.

itll never replace jkdefrag as my primary defragging program, but its nice to have something handy for defragging individual files. more useful than you'd think.

Yes I give this beta 5 high stars. It defrags all what you have. It depends on your PC s hardware power. I mean it s better than others.
When the defraggler ends its job you may restart or shutdown your XP Pro SP2 netframework3 installed. Your XP Pro SP2 works better. HDD and all softwares secured.You dont loose time to finish your valuabel daily work.
You can choose any of your files or folders to defrag so you see rich result.

Nice little program. It's a "1 File Wonder", and no install is necessary if you unzip the setup program with 7-Zip. Like the fairly compact size, and this release got even smaller. I had a scary moment when I used the "Stop" button. It took forever to stop. When it did finally stop, I couldn't drag and drop files in the Windows Explorer. I had to close and re-open the Explorer to unlock the files. I wish for a legend for color blocks, better speed, smaller size, and a zip version. A little more improvement and it will be my default defragger.

It works great - so far. It would be nice if the author would allow this defragger to write an INI to it's install folder and save the window position and window and column sizing, at a minimum. Showing file color codes somewhere on the app would be desireable too, instead of having to open the help file. Eventually, I would hope to be able to schedule Defraggler for scheduled system defrags...

defraggler will be as good as ccleaner, just give it time!

it is missing:

1 boot-time defragmentation
2 one-pass defragmentation (no analyze)
3 space defragmentation
4 some strategy for defragmentation

it gave me an 'abend', no message

anyway, thanks Piriform Ltd. for this new 'child'!

I personally prefer Contig, but a GUI is always a plus. As for defragging and compacting, that's a job for DirMS.

Well, this is a fast program, and it tells you if it cannot defragment files, and you can reanalyze to learn which ones. It would be nice to have the ability to more than just defragment files, but compact the disk space.
