good sidebar.

pros: --it is free
--it is flexible
--it has a small memory footprint (much smaller than Google or Yahoo sidebars)
--has good modules (the stack is very good... enabling several modules to fit into one)

cons:
--there are prettier ones out there

nice program, though not as fast as I hope, but overall it's good.
klipfolio is another good choice too.

I don't think it's .NET Deedstyger, the official download doesn't ask for .NET and moreover the exe doesn't depend on mscoree.dll, however some of the plugins depend on .NET, so watch out

++ freeware.
++ all the plugins i chose worked without problems i can say.
+- some plugins especially the perf monitors have good details but also some have less options..
-- uses net framework & xml which equals to slowness on my p3-733. sometimes up to 40% with about 10 plugins enabled. tlb does the same with much low cpu. this is because of using the xml bloat i suppose..
-- skins not visually esthetical much.
-- panels not visually esthetical to each other.. all those panels added to the bar visually a mess what i see is.

result: truelaunchbar wins definitely if u have money.. ds wins if u can resist those negativities.. samurize can be another free alternative. my choice is tlb.

This is not a tough crowd - just one that expects a standard of quality to be upheld, especially when it has int he past. Why release code without taking the time to include optimizations that were considered de riguer in all previous versions, especially when there is no urgency to push new releases out the door?

I have long used, championed and recommended this utility and can now do so again.

All that remains is for the dev to issue a long overdue final release.

FIVE stars.

The last two builds of this app have the not-so-small issue of immediately triggering the OS (XP / SP2) to increase my virtual memory paging size. I note that this is due to changes and memory optimizations which must be made more current. Fix this please.

THREE stars until it's fixed.

Also, we gonna get a final before the end of the decade?

Edit:

Kludging my swap file is not a panacea for shoddy programming.

FOUR stars for a superlative tool that's starting to cook too long.

In my view, it's the best of the sidebars currently. Although you do tend to find the others all have something that is good and you wish were on the one you want to use. However, Desktop Sidebar has the most things I want. Unfortunatly, the 113 update hasnt fixed the stocks issue. It shows the correct share/index price/value but the up/down flag is wrong. You think the market is up 100 when its actually down!!!

the_root

the_root reviewed v1.05 Beta Build 113 on Jun 6, 2006

A must have for me, and it just keeps getting better. Also can be used as a security tool to monitor internet traffic up and down, CPU and memory usage.
10 stars plus!

Very slick and configuration abilities are awesome.

About the "katipo's" comment. The sidebar in Vista is no longer on by default but rather an optional startup item.

The MAZZTer

The MAZZTer reviewed v1.05 Beta Build 112 on Apr 12, 2006

Stress test with a large number of panels shows a low CPU usage, although the memory usage is high it was to be expected with the number of panels I opened.

Overall this beats out Google's Sidebar easy. Less than three.

Make sure to get some third party plugins and skins. However there is one called tasklist that is incompatible with this beta and will cause it to crash when the panel is installed and every time DS is run. To fix this and other similar problems, delete the plugin's directory from the Desktop Sidebar\plugins directory and start Desktop Sidebar.

roj

roj reviewed v1.05 Beta Build 112 on Apr 12, 2006

I checked out the True and Free launch bars iterated in some of the reviews here. One is very Mickey Mouse and amateurish and both have tremendously limited capabilities in comparison. I used solutions like them back in the day of Windows 95.

This thing is fast, slick, lean and enormously configurable. It's also extensible.

If you want a solid control center for what you do on your machine that goes beyond icon clutter on your desktop or popup menus with minimal functionality, take a good hard look at this tool. Don't like the desktop footprint? Hide it manually or via Autohide.

FIVE stars for excellence - all software should be this small and useful.

Its apparent why this is the Sidebar that Microsoft uses to benchmark their own after.

5 out of 5.

orizng

orizng reviewed v1.05 Build 110 Beta on Feb 20, 2006

I give it a 5, after customization, now this stuff takes 10MB RAM+10VRAM, which is pretty neat, sure i get rid of some stuff i dont need, such as stock etc. now my panels include a clock, weather, news room, voice volum winamp, commander line, quick launch. pretty good, although i would say this stuff is similar to google desktop search's sidebar, GDS slow down computer dramatically, so this one works better for me.

marty

Yes, it's a resource pig, extremely slow and I've even had to reinstall Outlook because of it. Like the other reviewer - stick to the Google Sidebar - its great.

pluto2se

pluto2se reviewed v1.05 Build 94 Beta on Jan 6, 2006

Ok, my computer isn't the absolutely latest but it's by no means a piece of computer history.
I find Desktop sidebar quite sluggish and halfbaked. In default configuration it eats up a good 22mb memory which is quite abit in my book. It got better after most things had been removed that I didn't need but the feeling of a slow half-baked program remained. If you got the time and energy, go for samurize! If you are the "I want something cool-looking don't care about the details" type, go ahead!

imanino

imanino reviewed v1.05 Build 94 Beta on Dec 26, 2005

Love the idea, but sidebars are really buggy with SP2 and XP. When they work, they do. When they don't , they don't and depending on your configuration they may eat up memory and processor cycles, lock up graphics, or just crash. This one was good on the first score, probably the least wasteful of resources, but when I changed the default configuration it got testy and locked up the system for a long time or crashed. While everyone is bowing at the ease of use of these things, we really need to think about the negative potential here. The exposing of the desktop surface to the web as in active desktop, which has always made me nervous anyway, is multiplying exponentially with widgets and these kinds of thing. Beyond security, there's the fact that the number of things that can go wrong multiplies here and a particular configuration error here could go from merely buggy to catastrophic for your system stability...some of this occurring from say some misconfigured web blog at an undisclosed location. We're not even talking about the "typical" worms, viruses, trojans, and so on. The program looks great, is customizable, and for the half hour it actually worked seem okay, but it definitely bugged out the graphics card (GeoForce Ti 4600) and doesn't like some of the uploaded "panels" which I suspect is the problem.

Works well - BUT: won't properly de-install. No directory deleted, loads of stuff remains, EVEN IN THE REGISTRY. THIS IS BAD BEHAVIOUR. When I visit someone, I will, at least, flush the toilet . . .

No offence intended. Sorry, just a bit furious. I HATE programs that won't leave my machine cleanly!

Very easy to use, unlike that powerful yet overly complex Samurize deskbar many people love.
Very customisable and many plugins available. Doesn't do everything.. yet, but is most way there.

This is the best release yet. Don't know what happened in that last release with the insane amount of CPU usage. This program now boasts a small memory footprint and very low CPU usage. Only problem I have is a program hang trying to configure one of my e-mail addresses.

Ishtumba

Ishtumba reviewed v1.04 Build 73 Beta on Aug 23, 2004

This is an incredible program. I have been using it since the early stages and enjoy seeing the new builds get better and better without sacrificing quality. It is highly configurable and provides accurate up to date information.

In regards to CPU and Memory Usage....
My test concluded the following:
Running an Intel Pentium 4 1.8 Ghz with 512MB RAM.

While not in focus:
6.520 MB Memory usage
0% - 2% CPU usage (the 2% is from updating the information such as the RSS feed and weather)

While in focus, but not accessing anything:
6.520 MB Memory usage
0% - 2% CPU usage

While in focus, and rolling over an item:
10.756 MB Memory usage
9% - 11% CPU usage

All in all, this program does not have a problem with CPU usage and memory leaks. It runs completely smooth on my machine without any bog downs or memory leaks.

Very cool. Useful with lots of features and detailed options. This is also FREEWARE! I can't imagine how much work went into this. Found it to be a bit tricky to move panels around for the first time and resizing them but once you get used to it, it's fine. (Winamp panel stopped playing winamp when i tried to move it, one of the options to show winamp only shows peice of the winamp window). Overall = Great!

Great release IMO. Like the graphical improvements and the small tweaks they've made. I usually only use the newsroom tab amd the system performance tab and the CPU use (10-15% on hover) is acceptable for that.

Don Juan

Don Juan reviewed v1.04 Build 72 on Aug 13, 2004

Yes they did improve the memory usage in this version from 28Mb to 20Mb with the default install. I runs with as little as 6Mb with everything off. However, there is a new issue in this version, CPU usage. Idling it had on average 5% CPU usage, only 1% if I removed all the items from it. When I would mouse over it, the CPU usage would spike to around 50%, and while interacting with it it would spike up to about 85% CPU usage. Not to mention very poor responsiveness probably due to the CPU usage. It would become unresponsive for up to a minute at a time. Don't know what happened, this program was getting better with every release up until this one.

Utterly indispensible and at 15Mb, not a memory hog at all despite claims to the contrary. I'd suggest that user seriously examine what plugins he has active - it's no logical stretch that the more of those that you use the more RAM it takes. My long-standing toolbar of choice over all and that includes a lot of the shareware junk. I'm also no fan of psuedo-Apple cutesy-ness. :D

I have only one issue and it's not only with this program but with many: why the heck bother with imnplementing Windows 9x support (that's includes Windows MiniMe)? This is 2004. If you choose to run a six year old kludge that passes for a psuedo-OS, you deserve the level of support and grief appropriate to that decision. Developers (especially smaller ones) need to put that garbage behind them, abandon it as the footnote to history that it is and move on. Apart from requiring less time and effort, it will also have the additional benefit of rendering the code lighter and less prone to totally unnecessary kludges.

This thing is amazing. I've been using it for the last couple of hours, and the more I use the more I discover new tricks and tweaks.

The major issue with it is it's memory consumption. Maybe it's because this is a beta version (did not try the previous stable build) but after couple of hours running it consumed a bit more than ~40M of my RAM. This is not a small amount of RAM, really not.

I busted my head trying to figure out why the hell it needs so many memroy, couldn't find the reason. Maybe it should come with some tuning tips.

Although this is really an amazing app, the memory consumption is far from being a small thing, and this is the reason I gave it only 3.

It's really good one can find so many cool progs in one place. This is one of them, and hopefully someday will come out of being beta :) Keep up the good work !

Exellent program idea. Only problem - it takes huge amount of RAM even more than Microsoft Outlook and Winword

This is a great idea, and I love the features for it, but it crashes all the time on both my Windows 2000 machine and my Windows XP. I can't wait to see a stable version of this. Will be very usefull once it is done. Keep up the work!

Really cool idea, but really buggy right now. Can't wait to see the final!

Riight. Why use this?? It just gets in the way. i find it much more convient to Load my email rather than have somthign take up my pc resources and my screen

This is nice. I tried it, and although I won't be using it I still think it's a nice Longhorn type of sidebar and is extra nice with it's Outlook support. Would like to see a wider variety of panels and configuration options though. Nice work.

This really excellent. Within 2 hours it became a permanent resident on my Desktop.

This has a pretty nice interface, nicer than the other pre-longhorn sidebars out there. But holy crap...45 megs of memory to run the thing? No thanks.

Simple, only takes a right click. Best implementation of a MD5 checker I have found. Good work.

This build is quite stable for me. Love the stock panel and the change to the weather & outlook panel. The IE6 newsfeed integration is awsome.

Well my first complaint is that it took about 6 minutes after I started the app for it to actually show up...

Takes a second for the individual box to become highlighted when I put my mouse over it.

Doesn't let me put it on my second monitor (which is where I want it..).

Is on top of my taskbar, which it shouldn't be.. I set my taskbar to "Always on Top" for a reason..

Because I have two monitors, the autohide is permanent.. When I put my mouse to the edge of the screen, my mouse goes to my second monitor so apparantly the bar doesn't know when to come back..

Would be useful as a floating window if it didn't have the window border..

Some good stuff:

Fix the horrible load time and make it run faster, and make it so it can dock on my second monitor, and this would be an AWESOME app. But right now it sucks.

Well the idea is cool. I just miss a few things here that I hope will make it into the final release. 1. Transparency setting so I can keep enjoying my wallpaper ;)
2. It should not crash if I want to choose a different IMAP map as Inbox. 3. Maybe all major settings could be done from one tabbed window, just keep everything together.

Otherwise a fine program and I'm looking foreward to using it again. For now .... stil needs some work. (Duh!! its a beta ... sorry)

All it does is crash. My system has more than enough power, I even restarted twice, installed it to three different directories. Shame, looks like a great app.

I really like this utility. I would like to see it movable and resizable. Right now it offers a panel for Microsoft Messenger only. I also would like to see an AOL panel added. But remember this is only a beta and hopefully more is coming!!!

Very handy! All the information I need (latest news, outlook schedules etc.) displayed neatly at the side of the screen.

Would have given a 5 but found adding newsfeeds very temperamental.
