Pretty cool, but difficult to maintain. For small group sharing, I recently started testing imeem. It really shows promise in it's simple apporach to solving the private peer-to-peer problem. And, it's got heavy encryption to protect everything on or about the network.

Good job. But I think SuperPIM is better if you only want to send text from one PC to another.

NMDC is GOOD as it was the original, nmdc isn't good as it was a weak update to the older 1.09 version. In the end neither compare to DC++ and its clones. I run a Direct Connect for only OPs, u must be an op in another hub inorder to be a member of oph.no-ip.com, if u are interested in being a member email me @ ganja_5000@hotmail.com. 8)

well, being a user of this program for quite some time now it is probably the best out on the net, and heres why

when it comes to the neo modus program, it is like irc, except its noobie friendly. it may be a shock to kazaa type users, but in the end its very easy to learn compared to other direct connect clients out there

most common problem: "i cant find anything" this happens because either they are looking for something really old or looking in the wrong hub
ie. search "anime" in an mp3 hub

as for other types of direct connnect software such as dc++:
dc++ is good for the user, but is really abusive and detrimental to the entire direct connect community. When you are trying to download a file from a 1.5 mbps dsl connection along with 8 other ppl, your download speed will be slow. also, i have used this program for over a year and i have found it to have a infinitessimal advantage over the neomodus version that i have decided to switch back.

the bottom line: Quality connections over quantity

another point i would like to make is the connection ratings of users on the neo modus version, it actually shows users that have exceeded 100KB/s in upload speeds to a single user

For those of you that gave this program a good rating, you have not realized the true power(?) of the alternatives. Programs like DC++ and oDC give you the ability to connect to multiple hubs at the same time, use of automatic SFV-checking on downloaded files (verifies file integrity, if availiable), it can remember your passwords for hubs if you want it to, and it has a nifty little tool called ADL (Automatic Directory Listing). In the ADL you can specify keywords which it will scan filelists for, so if you tell it to search for .avi and only files that are larger than 400MB, it will list all avi-files larger than 400MB in a separate folder each time you download someones filelist. Also, if someone cuts your download from him/her, it will automatically search for other people to download from. Another nice feature is that it can disconnect any uploads to users that leave the hub once their download has started (note: it will not disconnect the user if you leave the hub or the hub goes down, only if the user you are uploading to leaves the hub). Oh yeah, and I almost forgot. It's totally free, unlike Neo-Modus DC which is supported by ads. These are just examples of what the competition has to offer, there are many more things!

for those who gave this a bad rating, you have not yet opened the the door fully to DC. once you have a good amount of files to share you can basically connect to any hub, search files and download files from any number of people sharing up to 1000gb ive seen so far. I get any file I want in a matter of seconds. this is by far the best app to come out in a long time

Melkor is bitter because there happen to be people that just aren't into the alternative, DC++. Perhaps he doesn't know how to install a program into windows OS because the program has been running just fine on everyone elses machine. Neo-Modus Direct Connect is a good program and is excellent for sharing.

This ground breaking file sharing community has been around for over 2 years. This version of the Neo-Modus DC has been around for over a year. In this time period there have been 4 or 5 alternative clients created. Why haven't there been any updates? The client still crashes, gets stuck in loops, and give the user error messages that have nothing to do with what the user just did. The alternatives are well supported and have functions that make this client outdated. And yet people still cling to this program and refuse to see the future. For those who run NMDC-only hubs i look down on you with disgust.

Advantages - huge hub sharing, multiuser downloading (not quite like winMX), folder sharing- great if you want to download full albums, nice customizable interface, and also great if you are behind a school firewall =)

Disadvantages - share requirements for some hubs, doesn't effectively resume old queues, does not separate temp files and completed files

My theory,

if you want a program and have patience, go with edonkey/overnet/emule
these programs WILL get your program for you but its not gonna get it for you quickly, its more of a "slow but effecient" program with 1000000 times more content then other file sharing programs.
It actually relies on (depending on how rare or popular the file is) up to(you can set this number) 500 ppl to download your program. Unlike dc (which i hate with pride) which you relies on 1 person, and if they log off...your up s*** creek without a paddle...

"id rather wait a while for a program than not have it at all......."

Of all the file sharing programs, DC is one of the best. Know this: You MUST share files to download files! The more you share, the more hubs you can enter! There are hundreds of hubs! I downloaded so much stuff I bought a new 60 gig hard drive just for DC. Don't waste your time with other file share programs that take a week to get a single file (e donkey, overnet etc) or the noobies choice, Kazaa (bogus files like mad). The BEST file share client is IRC. Then DC++. Then DC. Bottom line: IRC is not noobie friendly, and DC is. Great job with DC!!

OK, Where to start?.

After reading some of the reviews posted here I though it was time i put fingers to keys and did a review of my own, here it is.

Before DC came into my life I romed around the internet searching for whatever I wanted, Music, Films, Games and the like, finding most of these at doggy warez sites and being bombarded with 10s - 100s popup windows, when I finaly got DSL I started to look for a better way to get what I wanted, FTP was fine if you could find what you were looking for but it just wasn't good enough. Then I stumbled into DC and tryed it, Hmmmm, Buggy?, Maybe (But is it DC being Buggy or just Windoze being it's usual self?) and as for not being able to download anything or the search not working I dont know, for me DC has saved me from every single thing that is wrong with FTP\WEB searching, Ive tryed other P2P proggies (EDonkey, WinMX) but they just dont have what DC does and thats the ability to know exactly what your downloading.

Take WinMX for instance, this whole que malarky thingy is a sheer anoyance, I dont want to be put in a que of say 50 users or so, if i cant DL now Ill wait til later and try again, at least I can sneek infront of someone else trying for a slot on DC (So can everyone else but its good for morale) and you tend to chat to other users anyway wich passes the time (so does staring at the progress counter).

To give an example of how much downloading I do compared to my less fortunate freinds not using DC heres a brakedown of what Ive managed and how.

Total size of downloads in 1 day.

DC. = 1GB+
Other. =

I have recently installed DC and don't really have a clue what all the jargon in the other posts is on about, being only a mere niave Kazaa Ex-Napster user.

However I do know enough about programming to know that I could have written this software better myself, and that is saying something!!

Constant message boxes saying "Error - Too many files - in sub tmrBgWork_Timer DC shoud be restarted as soon as possible". The sub description changes in each message but the end result is the same. Restart the program or maybe even reboot. There are some serious GUI problems with this program, an issue which I thought the world pf programming had mastered years ago.

The program may crash beyond usability but it has got progressivley worse since I installed it, which means I have had a small amount of joy. Yes I managed to download and browse ONE users collections of folders. The files I selected wouldn't download, they just queued for infinity and the effectiveness, usability and usefulness of the program has progressively got worse from there.

I shoud point out at here that I am using a Conexant 4 port ADSL router which uses NAT. This means that I have the added bonus of having to allow the port 412 to be routed in the router and give DC the WAN IP address of the router. Spot the obvious problem here. Yes, the WAN IP address is a DHCP address and so changes each time I reset it. Not that this matters because setting the above doesn't cause DC to work any better. If fact it doesn't download anything at all.

The only other option here is to use passive mode. This gives limitations to what you can download though and...you've guessed it, doesn't work either. By 'work' I mean download. After all that is what DC is for.

Connecting to a hub isn't usually a problem but the GUI drains so many of the resources that you find even displaying a simple context menu takes about a minute or sometimes hangs completely.

But my main gripe with DC (if you haven't guessed already) is that it doesn't do what it is supposed to, download files. Other posts here have praised it and complained about not having high enough transfer speeds. I would be happy with 5-6Kb/s, if only I coud get that!! Files just queue endlessly and never move to the 'download' tab. I think I used to be able to do this but I always got the status 'no free slots', which is another mystery concept only made available to 'DC boffs'. Also someone tell me what is DC++?

This program quite simply has too many unexplained mystery concepts that aren't even explained in the help files. People on the hubs try to help but only seem able to suggest the obvious like 'change to passive mode' or 'upgrade the DC program'. I like the idea and concept of this program but it has been so poorly implemented that this renders the whole idea pointless to me.

Anyone who can enlighten me on any of these issues please do:

This program is a total waste of time. This file sharing device is not very good. The user interface is very user unfriendly. It is rather hard to natigate them, and once you learn how to, their windows constanly open on you and it takes a while to resize them.

Most of their hubs won't even have anything to do with you if you aren't sharing enough files. And the worst part is that their search does not work, at least not on my computer. Using other file sharing devices, at least they display an error message "no files found". DC doesn't even do that. They tell me that I am not connected, even though I have connected to some obscure hub.

The only thing that DC has that others don't is that it is more personal. Well, I guess this is a good thing, but let's be honest: do any of us really care whether or not our file sharing program is personal or not? The important thing that I am looking for is wheather or not I can easily find what I am looking for, and more so if it works in the first place. And if it is something thats' totally impersonal, so be it.

Anyway, I have used Napster (many eons ago) and now I am currently using Kazaa. I've have been tring to find free downloadable books. Unfortuatly, Kazaa isn't very good at this. Someone recommended me this file sharing device. To tell you the truth, I can't tell you how well it works, because the search option is all messed up.

If you allready have at least 10 gigs worth of sharing data, like to "hunt" for your files, like a personal enviornment, like to jump though hoops and like the challenge of problem solving, are a very fast learner, or at least have a lot of patience, then I would recomend this softwar to you, otherwise you may wish to go elsewhere. Now, I am not much of a complainer, in fact I don't really mind having to figure things out, but enough is enough. I have other things to do. DC just didnt work out for me, but for over a thousand other people, it did and I am not going to argue with them. Go ahead and give it a try, you might really like it, you don't have to listen to me, just dont be disapointed if it doesn't work out for you either.

Great program, except it hasn't been updated in a long while. It should incorporate many features found in DC++ as multiple hubs, search only open slots, etc. Yes, I want it to move towards DC++, that way you don't get a split of hubs that don't allow DC++ or some that do. Sick and tired of hub jumping. Whats up with the stupid queue system or lack of it. Hammering is not being in queue.

When it comes to finding rare music, movies with DVD quality, etc. DC is probably the first place you should check out. I can seriously find the majority of the things im looking for, especially movies, games, and programs. But the program has its flaws also that would discourage people from using DC. One is the speed at which you download from someone. I have a cable connection at my home and still when I try to download files from other users with high speed connections, such as cable or T3, my downloads only go at around 5 or 6kb/sec. I know there can be many reasons this happens such as the person i'm downloading from has others downloading from them at the same time and that can cause a slower transfer rate for me. But I've had people download from me at around 150kb/sec and as a test to see if i could accomplish the same speed I would download from them also. The result was the same as before. I was still downloading at about 6kb/sec and the other users transfer rate remained at a steady 150 to 140kb/sec. My downloading from him never seemed to slow him down. I don't know if the speed problem has to do with my modem, comp, etc. or the dc program, but this is really pissing me off though. I've had the program for about a month and a half now and I seriously haven't downloaded anything, except for an album which took me like 5 hours to finish downloading. I still believe this is a great sharing program that, unfortunately, I couldn't use as efficiently as I believed I could.

The idea behind DC is very good with communities, peer-to-peer transfers and above all, the vast amount of data available for download.

It's indeed a shame that it's so badly written. The most annoying bug (apart from casual crashes in XP) is the memory leak (I guess?) which makes the computer sluggish after some time. A reboot will solve this problem though, but until it is fixed, I'll stick to DC++. The other problem is that hub owners tend to block DC search programs (Mos++, Glo) and this makes it difficult to locate the files you want. After all, the idea behind file sharing should be to get the desired files. I won't go into details about this, as a large debate is already brewing around this subject. It's just my personal opinion.

I think this program is no better than others, like Kazaa for example, first of all downloads are slower,(that´s if the user has any free slots, wich in my case happened half of the times i wanted to download a movie),second of all you have to connect to a hub (among all the big list of hub´s) first to be able to download something, then you have to follow a lot of "rules" for example, sometimes having 40 G from your hard disk for others to transfer,if don´t ,you are banned from the hub,and then ,if you connected to the hub,the most certain is that you won´t find what you are loocking for there, and you must look in other hub. I didn´t like it at all.

Ok, so call me slow for just now finding out about DC. I use IRC heavily, and I'm insulted by all who take it for granted and make negative remarks about it. This is a system that's been around since 1988, and it's a hell of a system at that. I might be using 56k dialup, but I've still reached transfer rates of over 24k/sec when downloading from 24/7 T3 servers. Anyway, I just tried DC the other night and I think it's great for anyone as long as you've got at least 4-5 gigs to offer. I won't lie, though, IRC is and will be my favorite resource for downloads.

zulugrid

zulugrid reviewed v1.0 Preview Build 9 on Oct 12, 2002

terrygooding01: Everything you complained about is what makes Direct Connect so great! Why should 56KB users waste available download slots so they can download at 2KB/sec? Why should users who only share 100MB be able to go into the big hubs where everybody has 50GB? The hubs owners decided to descriminate based on internet speed and shared files. Because of this, you can gradually work your way through the hubs until finally you have enough material to go to the huge 100GB minimum shared hubs and download basically whatever you want. The problem with IRC is you have to wait in line for horrible 56KB users to finish their downloads. The problem with many other apps is it doesn't require you to share at all, or (even worse) makes you share to ANYONE who wants it, so you have 200 people downloading off of you at .3KB/sec, and all you can download is at .3KB/sec.

BTW, I personally like DC++ better (http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net)

I'm not going to compare DC to things like Napster, FastTrack, or Gnutella. Not the same. DC Hubs are community-based, where you see the same people when you log on, chat with them, get to know them, etc.

This is what eDonkey would be if the software didn't suck.
This is what Hotline would be if the server ops weren't poo-poo heads.
This is what people have tried to turn IRC into by writing complex file-sharing scripts. (Yes, I know IRC still has the best files...)

It works! Finally, something that works! I find what I'm looking for, the software doesn't crash, and, for the most part, the people are nice. Simply awesome.

This is a waste of time.

I'm a casual user & found this program annoying. Most of the hubs require you to have minimum amounts of data that YOU wish to share with the world to gain access, to get in the bigger ones where all the amounts of files they brag about this was often around 100+GB, leaving me with my mere 10 or so gigs worth of MP3s pretty well stuffed. If your new to this your in trouble. They also dictate where you can go purely upon your connection speed to... discrimination me thinks! I couldn't find what I wanted when I did manage to get somewhere. Although Napster is dead I suggest if your not a hardcore user go to Kazaa instead it may be "impersonal" but at least it works.

I have been using DC for 5 months now. At first It was hard to find a good hub that had what I was looking for. After about two days of connecting to different hubs I found a hub that suited my wants. I like jap anime alot and other file sharing programs like kazaa and gnutella didn't have the quality video files that I was looking for, or they did but the file was next to impossible to get because the people weren't that committed to providing a service like the people found at good DC hubs. Speed (multiple source download) is not really a necessity when you have people committed to providing you with a quality service. If you are looking for a great anime hub goto the Anime Hub [NL] (powered by Saiyan.nl) at dragonball.fileserver.ca

I'm quite new to Direct Connect, being a former user of Morpheus and then Kazaa. My initial impressions were that the interface was a little complicated but that's easy to get used to. I think that DC is a very good performer. You can nearly always find what you are looking for and the downloads aren't too slow.
However DC lacks something which most other file-sharing programs provide and that is the ability to throttle the rate other users can upload from you. You may wonder why this is so important. Well, if you are uploading at the maximum rate that your connection allows, your download speed is considerably reduced. The way tcp works, data is split up into 'packets'. When you download something, and are receiving the packets, you have to send an 'ack' (acknowledge) packet, signifying you received the last packet. Because you're uploading at your max, that 'ack' packet gets queued in like with all the other packets you're sending, thus in turn, increasing the time before the next packet is sent from the server you're downloading from.
Throttling your uploads would ensure there is a little bandwidth to allow the sending of the acks.
A note for Windows XP users.
The built-in firewall does indeed hinder the functionality of DC. However I would not recommend de-activating it altogether as a firewall is vital in maintaining internet security.
Instead, in the firewall settings for your internet connection, you should add entries for DC services so they can bypass the firewall. To do this, click 'add' on the services tab. Enter a description for the service (e.g. Direct Connect - TCP' and then the name of your computer followed by the port numbers (default: 412). The radio selection should be TCP and then click Ok. You should add another entry by repeating this process once more for UDP instead of TCP.
After this, you should be able to use DC and also benefit from the security of the firewall.

I have been on Direct Connect for about a year. I heard about it from a friend in one of my college classes and
downloaded it that afternoon that he told me about it. It was the old Beta version of DC. I started liking it the
first day I got it. I found a few things from some users that I have been looking for awhile. I didn't really know
anybody at first just use DC to get stuff. Finally I find a hub that I really like. It was called 'Welcome Thieving bas****s' and found some people that I really like and had some good friends in there. Nice to have a chat build in aswell so you can talk to people while waiting for your downloads. I haven't really used any other peer-to-peer programs, but why should I? when I can find everything I need on DC. I just love DC! It's a great program to have if you like downloading stuff, like me. If you have read smitty review of DC. I have downloaded the Talking DC client that he wrote off of OpenDC and I can say, its pretty cool. It uses the ActiveSound engine and you can change the voice speed and voice type. Its funny to hear user chats on it. Check it out like he said at File Raiders. I have found a person on DC that I have got along with and have become a very good friend of mine. She started a hub a half a year ago, I beleive. I help her start the hub from the start and have been the CO-Owner of it. Its apart of -=F.E.A.R=- and the hub IP is : apreal.no-ip.org, so please check it out...enjoy DC.

I have tried Napster (until their little mis-hap), I have tried Morpheous (not too bad), but Direct Connect I have found is the best there is out there. The "anything" file sharing ability is the greatest in the world, and alot of the people I have come in contact with on DC are great people to talk with. Not only can you download almost anything you could think of, but DC also gives a person the opportunity to chat with others and to make new friends. As a matter of fact, I liked the program so much, I started my own hub with the help of a couple of friends from around the world--Vancouver, WA USA HUB (where it says connect type: vancomp2.no-ip.com (we do have a 3gig share minimum)). So come on in and say hi, or feel free to stick around. Just remember: Sharing your entire C: is not a good idea. Too many sensitive files that you may have can be downloaded by anyone..only share the files that you would expect to find yourself, and always remember to scan your downloaded files for possible viruses because that is always a good thing to do and it keeps you safe!

A rating, oh yeah. Always a 5 star rating from me. Word to the wise though: Bigger hubs aren't always the better hubs. Smaller hubs will give you a faster search and usually contain regulars that will stick around and let you finish a download. Good Luck all and never give up Siul. If worse comes to worse, get your stuff up and running, find a different OS on Direct Connect and reformat your machine....

Well, all I wanted to say is, it's not a bad program at all, comparing to the long-ever-lasting queues on mIRC or other sharing program, if you got into a good hub (in my case i did find some sweet hubs) you are more likely to get what u want with the slots available (the best thing is that u can adjust the amount of slots as you wanted right on the spot =P smart thing =)) anyway, but ever since i reinstalled windows i had this problem - I checked that firewall is OFF for sure, but still after i connected to a hb for 2 seconds or so it disconnects automatically, but before i reinstall windows, it didn't seem to have such a problem at all... it was connecting perfectly. I didn't run any network enhancer, and everything was at default or as "original" as it could, but it just won't connect, i tried a few more hubs and the same thing happens. Then i started to use that "public" button on the connect menu... nothing. nothing showed up .....sigh....

well, if anyone finds a solution to this problem please post it up! thanks in advance =)

Sloop is the only one who has any sence it seems. The program is not bad because it was written in VB, it is bad because it loops all the time and has useless features in it. If you ask me, I think Jon Hess should let me help him with the program. The program takes up way too much ram. And for who ever said "well go buy more RAM", shut up.. I don't want to hear your useless crap. I sent Jon Hess a big long webpage about what he could do to fix the simple problems but he has yet to implement any of them as I'm aware of and he never responded to it. I'm going to explain to you why he doesn't make the program open-source: Only an idiot would give the source code to a big program as this one. If he was to release the source, you'd have many Direct Connect clones that were written by Jon and had others taking credit for them. See, you people don't realize the simple things about it. I honestly could care less about Direct Connect anymore, because Morpheus is a lot better. It takes a file, divides it into many little files, and then has a multi-download on one file. So instead of it taking 3 hours it takes less than 1. Or at least on my computer. Anyway.. if Jon would make the dang "buddy list" work right I'd be happy to know I contributed to his ignorance. You have to "cross-hatch" the communication between hubs or your "buddy list" is worthless. Not everyone goes in just one hub. I'm really glad to see that you can actually right click on people from different hubs now. I would have never thought he'd listen to me. Guess I already contributed to him. Heh.. I'm gonna get headed.. Visit Degtur Solutions @ www.degtur.com

What is so great about this one then?
First of all, it is so small you wont even know is is running, it eats less then 0.5% of my RAM.

Second, it got allot of features and you can config it to work just the way you want to.

Third, The programmer is really dedicated and he is pouring out new versions almost everyday and he takes in feedback and listens to the testers.

Also i liked being able to connect to multiple users from different hubs. Multihub searches were awesome too!
Well now I have a problem! I just installed windows XP and now Direct connect does not work. I went to the http://www.neo-modus.com website and downloaded the latest client and I go to install and the first page of the installation flashes on the screen then quickly disappears! Does anyone know what in Haides is going on? If you do by all means offer me a solution. I even right clicked the dcsetup.exe file and ran it in the compatibility mode, but there too I found that it would not even open the exe and run, due to an archiver error. Well, the whole mentality behind this kind of file sharing says that information should be free. I'm a strong believer in free information and free software. I think the record companies and the software giants are making way too much money, so I don't mind sharing some movies and mp3s. But if you are making money on this kind of software, and like in this case, has programmed your application in a way that makes it impossible for anyone else to make another version of the program, then you are not better than the record companies. It's double standard.
Also, saying that he needs the money to be able to keep working on it is just BS. Some of the best programs (i.e, very good coded) ever made are free and open source, which means that they are absolutely free of charge and that anyone can study the source and change it if they want. Examples are Linux, Emacs, the Gimp, etc...

DC is a great program with a lot of uses. Obviously it gets used for piracy, so does every program with file sharing capability. To see so many complaining about the author making money on his software amazes me, I had no idea there were so many sad jelous freeloaders out there. Just because they did not have the ability or insight to create such a great program is no reason to complain about banner advertising in the window - it's not as if it's a full screen 5 minute commercial, it's a small banner. Personally I think as long as the banner does not significantly interfere with the operation of the software there is no harm in it. DC provides a great way of exchanging information of all kinds. It's fast and quite easy to use. There are ways that operation could be made easier - a better search facility would be nice (I personally like the Kazaa style search). Well worth the download and well worth puting up with a banner to use. I hope the author earns enough from the advertising to want to carry on improving the software.

im gonna have to agree with "Joohn" (??) on the idea about making money off a program like this. people are always gonna pirate stuff, the only "evil" people though are the ones that make money off of it. These are the people that get busted by Microsoft and video game companies and stuff. i hope this guy gets sued by the RIAA or something for making money off the prorgram. people should be free to write any program they want, people should be free to ask for money for certain software they write, and people should be free to make decisions (however wrong or immoral) to use/make copies of software - but to make money off someone else's stuff? blah... other than that, the Peer2Peer stuff seems to be catching on more than Gnutella style networks. however, Peer2Peer networks need to be more open sourced like Gnutella. cause if a Peer2Peer service gets killed (Morpheus/Kazaa, Direct Connect, etc), then the whole network that it had running through it will die unless there is some open source clients keeping it alive.

I have trouble understanding the basis for arguments when I hear people complain when something that is absolutely free doesn't operate exactly like programs that took years of production and countless technicians to produce.... HarlDephin reviewed v1.0 Preview Build 9 on Sep 10, 2001

well all in all this program is based on a very nice idea and i will continue using it if it remains as useful and usable as it is at the moment. but two things there are which seem to be a bit silly to me.
one is, that if i install the beta 9, and then start DC, i continue to get the message, that i'm still using beta 8, and sofor cannot connect to some hubs which require specific client versions. i know i could fix that by overwriting the version, but i guess the installation program should normally do that on its own, so please take a look at that.
second thing is that the program seems to use a lot(!) of my systems resources as soon as it does anything, for example if someone writes a message to me then everything else stops for about 1/4 second until DC has finished taking CPU time from the system. this seems to be, or at least i think, that it is caused because it's VB code is either not written correctly or maybe in a manner i wouldnt call a good programming style anymore. there are as well some errors in it, which forced me to do some VB unfixed bugs work-arounds to correct or, if not possible, to skip those (where not absolutely necessarily needed), for example that whole refreshing automation seems to be done by loops, and i dont think that anybody really needs that, or at least you should do that with idle timers instead of loops. and i asure you, if my(!) system begins knocking the bucket when DC takes resources, then other people might have more problems with it.
the best thing about DC is; if it doesnt crash or show errors, it works! (unlikely some other programs, that crash and nobody knows why)
(well, there are some things, which might show us, that DC is not really in mean development, as there are some functions missing every good program should have. just look at some like pure windows or other C+asm-written, and you will see what i'm thinking of. hint: more flexibilty!)
in addition: some problems with DC may come from the VB p2p functions and the system in general, because there are sometimes connections not properly ended and files not properly resumed and such things. shouldnt happen by using C(++) though.
but, sadly, as i'm not really into it, i cant offer any serious help to anything.
so keep on doing the good work.

I rarely have any problems finding or getting files with DC, but it is very poorly written, and in VB at that. It often uses more memory than anything else I have running on my computer, including servers and programming environments. The design and layout is very bad. You can't resize some of the horizontal panes, windows keep popping up all over the place, the entire program freezes while it is needlessly refreshing "available data", etc. It's very amateurish in most respects.

Another really annoying thing about DC, as with most P2P programs, I guess, is that I often get pestered by morons. There are so many idiots out there, I wish there were a way to killfile them or just not accept any messages at all. (I haven't received any useful messages yet -- mostly "hello???????????????????????????????" over and over again from different people.)

And you French and German guys, don't ask questions in your own language when you have absolutely no way of knowing whether the person you're messaging knows your language. Most people don't know it and don't care to learn it, so use English.

The program itself is working perfectly. However if Winblows crashes or you forget to close DC before you shut down your machine, DC fails to work the next time and even the installer doesn't do the trick.

Direct Connect is great---Where else can you go and find over 100 individually run hubs and almost any file you want---Hubs do have restrictions but doesn't everything in life---My hub, Smitty's World at smittys-world.d2g.com has only a 50 meg minimum---I like to have new users so i keep it low---Every build of DC has gotten better and we can expect a lot more concidering how it has advanced already---Keep up the good work Jon Hess---I also want to thank all the users on DC because they are what makes DC work---There is a few minor bugs but i have to give DC 5 stars---smitty

Rating of 2! I have seen the updates for Beta 9 and I'm very pleased, just wish the program was out now.. my big long review is gone though, I just wish that was still here so you could see the errors there are.. oh and Jon, one bug I got a lot yesterday was "curTransfer.iBit is less that zero" or something like that.. have no clue what it meant.. but I got so many errors it crashed DC..

I personally rather use IRC instead of this kind of p2p. I don't like being banned for unknown reasons and sharing over 3gb on my 128bit upload speed.

Reminds me of hotline, but easier to aquire files.

A wonderful bit of kit!! The only annoying thing about it is the fact that you can't access multi hub searches or connect to other passive users when in passive mode. Surely there has to be a way to make this work.

Patience my good friends. This g** Guy before me hit the nail on the head. I use Direct Connect quite a lot and have very few, if any, complaints about it. Mr. Hess has put a lot of work into this proggy and he should be commended. This is a 5 star program.
Now, a few points to those who are dissatisfied:
1). If you were allowed into a hub with nothing to share, what is the point? I suppose a bunch of you could sit around and chat... But isn't that what AOL is for?

2). If you are getting disconnected by others and can't finish your downloads, go to another hub. Shop around and you will find one that suits you.

3). If you are getting ".ocx" errors, try installing the actual Direct Connect program instead of the hub setup application.

4). If you complain about the speed, all I can say is, "it's better than nothing". Speed is very dependent upon who you are connected to, the ping to the user, and other variants such as high volume traffic on the internet itself. Some days are better than others.

5). If you cannot search or connect to someone try changing your settings to passive mode. You may very well have a connection that cannot work in the default active mode.

6). If you still have problems, get into a hub and ask some questions. You will find there are people in there just like yourself who'd be glad to help. If they don't, move on to another hub.

7). Direct Connect is not about incomplete and junk files. Leave those behind and you will find others will be glad to share with you. :0)

Good luck peoples. Like a fine poster before me has said: "Patience is a virtue". Install it and try it. If it doesn't work out it's not that difficult to remove a program.

i think this program is f*** briliant ! The way this program gets around is that peaople share x gb of thier files, if there wouldnt be any limit in certain hubs , you wouldnt find anything on the network, as simple as that...
tho the program has a few bugs , the "big arrow bug" , the "subtemp bug", but these are bugs that an ordinary beta software. neo modus should relese more bug fixes/new builds to get the whole dc-network to reach that 1000 tb (just at the moment it is at 130.82 TB , witch is near the peak) , so people , dont whine on high hub minimum shares..there is hubs wihtout limitations , but whats the point if none share anything ?

This program is excellent. Most of the time you get the download you want and if not you can just connect and resume from someone else. The only problem that I noticed is that many of the ops would something ban people for really stupid reason. There should be someone or something that you can go to if you are banned for really invalid reasons. Other wise the program is a sensation

OK, since others seem to be giving suggestions for the program, I figured I might as well. From crock2001, I agree with 1 and 3 of his suggestions, and though 2 is also a good suggestion, it would take a while to get that to work successfully (they'd have to create some sort of internal database either in the client or in the hub software). I also think that in the users list, there should be a column marked Status, where people could choose from Online, Away, BRB, etc. This would prevent people messaging you when you're AFK but leaving your client minimized (like I do). Also, one should be able to have multiple hubs open from one client window. I've noticed that DC crashes a lot if you try to use more than two instances, this would fix that (likely). Keep up the good work guys :^)

Now I am going to tell you what needs to be done before DC becomes a good program.

1) users should be able to message any user they are connected to even if they are not in the same hub.

2) DC should some how put some kind of digital signature on the file so the same files can be identified from other sources or that the file is compete.

3) The host should be able to set a bandwidth limit to prevent a bandwidth resource problem (e.g., 1 person grabs all the speed) and makes it so you cant use the net at the same time !

That's it for now but there are a lot believe me.

yes DC is a very good program, unfortunatly many of the people using it are capped to small upload speeds. One fault i found was that when you resume a download, if you dont hit resume straight away then a bug in the program causes DC to use 100% of your cpu untill you restart dc.
One other fault is the innability to change the background color of the search page to black and the text to white.
Having said all this Direct Connect is a very addictive little program. Ive learnt so much Swedish since using it.

Some peeps thought he had abandond DC in October of last tear because there was no updates since 09977. Well has U can see he came back with a bang, and releases DC Preview 1,0. He has definately put time and thought intot this version and it ROX. He is is always releasing the latest build after finding the bugs whish are starting to be fewer and fewer and harder to find. I have to Admit, the Transition from DC .9 to 1.0 wasn't easy, especially for me. I've been On DC for about a Year Now, and It's grown on Me.. I've had my share of Experiences over the months, making Firends and Aquiring some Enemies. But I have to Admit that the New DC is AWSOME. There is alot more Room to Navigate in, the menus have been moved around, and the Download/Upload/Queue has been totally Rebuilt, allowing for the maximum Information Output, and Minimal Space. Although it's gonna be a hard transition for most of the Original DC Vetrans, I'm sure we'll all learn to Love it.
