DivX for Linux is an asp mpeg4 de(en)coder that comes as a shared object (dynamic library) that no application uses, in other words totally useless, there are a few open source alternatives for Linux: XviD and ffmpeg come to mind, and these so's are used by most video applications like Xine or Totem.

Hope you don't have to do brain surgery to get it installed. Love Linux but having to slice and dice my Linux installation to get things (even games) to work is driving me nuts. Even the venerable OS/2 was far easier..
