Publisher's Description
Earth Alerts allows you to monitor in near real-time a variety of natural hazard events that are occurring anywhere around the world. Alert notifications, reports, and imagery provide the user with a convenient way to view natural phenomenon as they occur, whether close to home or some far-flung corner of the globe.
Earth Alerts uses a variety of online resources provided by organizations such as the National Weather Service, U.S. Geological Survey and Smithsonian Institution (just to name a few), to identify what sort of activities "Mother Earth" is currently dishing out on the planet.

It gets a -1. One of the worst and least intuative programs I've ever encountered. Certainly not worth the time I wasted with this peace of crap. Thank you very much.

I am not sure were some of these reviews come from. They don't seem to be reviews at all just statements about personal preferences.
This software is what most of the other weather and alert software should be.
I especially like that its not just another browser add on (I am browse-rd to death)
It provides relevant information about earth events that you get to chose.
The author seems to make daily updates. That is a little problematic. I am not sure if this is a beta release.
The only suggestion I would make is that it becomes skinable or more customizable in appearance.
The content and sources are excellent.

There's no other way of putting it, Earth Alerts is a dog of a program. One wonders why the programmer bothered.
I was hoping this program might have been a replacement for XEarth--an excellent program that's been around since OS/2 days but which has not been updated since the USGS - U.S. Geological Survey updated their IP addresses a while ago, now XEarth's earthquakes indicator won't work.
(Be warned, if you are going to use programs (or write them) that call on USGS data then ensure the IP address are not hard-coded (use an ini file etc.) as the USGS seems to change its IPs every 18 months or so.)
Any comparison between this heap of junk and XEarth and others is a waste of time. Earth Alerts has no proper dynamically expandable graphics etc., at best it uses the tiny USGS graphics which are nigh on useless if you're trying to use the program as a desktop backdrop. Moreover, even using the program is confusing, items that ought to be links simply aren't etc.

Your 1 start review is not valid for this particular build according to your own words. Therefore, you do not know whether this current build warrants a 5 or 1 start rating. Why trash something you haven't even tried?

This application is fantastic. What I like best is how the main window isn't resizable. Almost as cool as that is how the list of alert types extends beyond its range, yet no scroll bar is presented. Another nice touch is how it uses 100% CPU on my system when it updates, which seems to take forever. But perhaps my favorite feature is how much of the interface text is mangled because gosh, no one uses anything other than 96 DPI, right? Finally, I think it's positively awesome how much crap gets left behind after deinstallation, including the application's Run value and Application Data subdirectory.

PRO:
- no adware included
- nice graphics
- relays interesting reports
CONTRA:
- cryptic starting message about US locations
- many locations cannot be chosen, but no assistance for choosing an available locations is given
- cluttered and unintuitive interface
- erratic behaviour once networc access is denied
- relatively slow response
- requires .NET
- no link for uninstalling
The idea of the project is promising, but it seems to be in a very early stage of development. With less erratic behaviour and more obvious usability improvements (many events like clicking on a map or a symbol could trigger an obvious response, choosing the location could be combined with a map or at least a list of possible choices), it could become a recommendable piece of software.

Excellent program. It's not just a tasktray weather program, but something much more comprehensive. I found this program over a year ago and the updates get better and bettter. You need to pay attention when adding locations as the way to add them always starts with a new location entry. Not only is it good to get your local weather, but it is a great workd geography tool to educate kids. I have it loaded on my niece's computer (she is very interested in science) and she really enjoys reading the natural events that occur all over the world. I like the ability to have multiple areas watched simultaniously and can monitor severe weather everywhere my family lives at once.
