Publisher's Description

Exact Audio Copy allows you to get audio tracks off a CD and save them to your hard drive. It uses the Windows ASPI Interface, so both SCSI and ATAPI CD-ROM drives are supported. It supports hidden sector synchronization and has a secure, fast and burst extraction method selectable. Fast extraction should get the same speed as other grabbers, but is probably not exact anymore. Burst mode just grabs the audio data without any synchronization. It allows you to output of time positions of all non-exact corrections and listen to these positions. You can also copy of ranges of music data, not only tracks. Automatic Speed reduction on errors and fallback afterwards ensures that your music will still sound decent. It uses the Windows Audio Compression Manager for direct compression to MP3 or WAV. It also supports external MP3, VQF, RA and AAC encoders for automatic compression after extraction. Filename editing is easy with local and remote CDDB database and CDPLAYER.INI support and more features like ID3 tagging.

Still the best CD ripping tool out there. One minor note: The latest version (1.3) isn't parsing ampersands and apostrophes correctl from the freedb. They're showing up as ' for apostrophes and & for ampersands.

Not the most user friendly to setup, but worth it since it does the best ripping results.

Great ripping quality as always, but the EAC 1.0 beta switched to a new database format which it fails to import all the titles from my old database -- a serious bug.

The installer contains malware.

No, I don't give a ratz azz about what the twits in the EAC forum say; the eBay adCrap is malware.

No, I don't care that it's optional.

It's MALWARE and should not be in an installer.

Get it the H - E - Double - Hockey - Sticks out of the installer or Betanews should remove it and BLACKLIST it.

Using this program seems to be a useful program but after ripping cd's to your hard drive in accurate rip is fine but what is needed is this program needs a cd burning capabilty so that it will burn these same files to cd. If this program had this it would rate highly but sadly it doesn't.

Used it a lot in the past, never used it in my new PC till today. Don't know what's wrong, but extraction speed is unbelievably slow for me although I'm using the very same settings I always used, doesn't even go past 2x where Easy CD-DA Extractor goes around 25x.

A tiny bug: the extraction option "Create .m3u playlist on extraction" appears to be broken.

UPDATE 10-29-08: I had occassion to use this application in depth on a set of audio book cd's that were pretty scuffed up.

Bonk Encoder 1.0.9 does not have the type of error correction that EAC does, and though it was able to rip the CD, I noticed that there were actually small errors at the times where I saw the program pausing during the rip.

Used EAC and though it took about 4 times longer, the result was 100% error free when listening to the rip.

I'm glad this app is free, and I'm glad this app is out there.

It's one of those special use applications that you are really grateful to have available, even if the need for it is infrequent.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

Basically, this particular app offers Better Error Correction Functions than the average ripper. It simply tries harder to ensure a top-quality rip. It doesn't take anything for granted or make assumptions, it just get's all up in the face of your hardware and says "Hey, you WILL do that extra work, so suck it up and get it done - the right way!"

Is it overhyped? Meh. Maybe.

Is the development too slow? Errr... Yeah.

Is it worth moving up from the ever-awesome AudioGrabber program? Mmmm... Ya Betcha!

Is it still worth using when you have an awesome solution like Bonk Encoder out there?

Well, that's a bit of a different situation there. But I do think using both will get you the best of two worlds.

Makes dbPoweramp look like a chew-toy, don't it? :)

Especially since it's totally FREE.

With EAC and Bonk available for no cost, why would anybody even want to consider paying coin for anything else? Throw in Audacity and MP3 Gain and you got yourself an unbeatable package of audio awesomeness, without spending a single hard-earned penny.

Save your money, blow on by those inferior apps (dbPoweramp is soooo "1980's Hair Band Fluffish...) and snag yourself a copy of EAC. It really is Just That Good.

To quote one of the greatest minds of our generation:

"Thank you, drive through."

This is the best ripper for windows if you care about quality.

Others "do not understand" why EAC is better.

That is because they do not understand digital audio extraction of a standard (or non-standard) CD-DA disc.

Why EAC excels:

- configurable re-read options
- use or skip the internal drive C2 data for ECD
- Proper settings for lead-in / lead-out reading
- Calibration for reading/writing offset for any drive
- Configurable to be used with any encoder, using any command-line options
- All the basic features there: freedb query/submit, mp3 idv1/idv2 tags
- Stable, reliable and supports multiple interface (ASAPI, ASPI and Win Native)

There is _nothing_ that comes even close.

Many have tried and some have come far from their humble origins, but this software is still the best, if you know what you are doing and need the features (non-standard discs, copy protected discs, bad pressing, classical/mixed cds, scratched discs, etc).

If you do not need/understand this, fine, but bad that does not EAC make.

If you just need something simple and don't care about quality - look elsewhere.

JeremyP

JeremyP reviewed v0.99 prebeta 4 on Feb 1, 2008

Why is EAC so great? Just talk to any high volume trader, especially Grateful Dead fans. In order not to degrade the digital gene pool, it is necessary to have your CD/DVD drive accurately calibrated by the software (you'll have to read the docs with the program to dive deep into this). Doing this ensures that what you decode to your hard drive and then write to another CDR is exactly the same going out as going in.

EAC makes this easy to do. And that's why it is the traders extractor of choice.

Accept no substitute (tho' DbPowerAmp is pretty neat on this as well)

@echohead

"...but if someone can TRULY explain how/why EAC is so great, without starting a fanboy riot..."

The question is simple: GRATITUDE! I use EAC since first version 0.1beta (June 25, 1998). This software was ever freeware (wich was hard to find in 1998). The developer still work on it and do an excellent job. EAC still is one of the best CD ripper. It's stable and don't mess with our system! That' why I think Exact Audio Copy is Five Stars!

Obren

Obren reviewed v0.99 prebeta 4 on Feb 1, 2008

A ripper cannot be "the most accurate" - it is either accurate or inaccurate. Personally, I don't see any reason why people idolize this application. It does it's job, but is it fundamentally better than Audiograbber or any other freeware ripper? I don't think so.

echohead

echohead reviewed v0.99 prebeta 4 on Feb 1, 2008

in all seriousness, could someone please explain to me whats so special about this program? ive always used foobar2000 with the FLAC CLI to rip cd's and never had any problems or complaints. am i really losing THAT much by not ripping with EAC? im sorry but to me, EAC has always appeared to be a placebo ripper more than anything.

but if someone can TRULY explain how/why EAC is so great, without starting a fanboy riot, ill change my rating to 5.

Very sad...

The german magazin c't published an article whether EAC is or is not violating a german law against circumvention of copy protections on audio CDs. Some of the experts they asked had the opinion that the function of retrieving the native TOC is working at the limit of legality, at best. Due to that article and to eliminate any possibility of legal problems, I decided to remove that function (although I am pretty sure that it is absolutely legal).

For some strange reason this program doesn't agree with my Sony DRU-530A CD-R/DVD+-R Drive. Hangs up the drive, wheras I can't eject the disc. Also, after using the write CD function, the program hangs on the "creating lead out", and seems to skip the last song. I can't figure out why, CDex, and Audiograbber seem to wrok fine.

please show me the results on how it is "better" at ripping than the other two. It "is as good as", and has additional options, such as writing cue sheets and burning capability, but for *DAE ripping* -it has no better results. I give it 5 stars, as I also give to AG & Cdex. They all do a great job, and all are freeware. We have choices for our ripping "toolbox".

As far as being "best" hands-down, that's no longer true. J. River's Media Center (versions 9 and 10) offer secure ripping which works at least as well, and perhaps better (but no, they don't have offset correction, so those billionth-of-a-second blips will haunt you if you use Media Center /sarcasm). EAC's options and interface leave much to be desired, but I've used it for a couple hundred discs, and it is solid.

Simply the best ripper out there. The only *new* thing about this release being added to BetaNews is the new website address is listed. Pre Beta 4 was released in like November of last year. A little late for news about it. EAC is now at exactaudiocopy.ORG instead of exactaudiocopy.DE. When you try to download some of the files from the newer site and they fail try copying the download link and you'll find it's because it hasn't been updated to ORG yet and instead uses the DE address. AudioGrabber has nothing on EAC. Maybe EAC isn't the prettiest application but, um, AG is butt ugly too, IMO. I never much liked CDex, etc. None of them really are visually appealing. In the end EAC is evolving, even if slowly, it's free, it does the job and it does it well. 5 stars.

Bluezion

Bluezion reviewed v0.95 Prebeta 4 on Mar 4, 2004

When Audiograbber offers a "Secure Mode" like EAC does, I'll might reconsider using it. Till then EAC is the absolute king of quality ans secure rips (only PlexTools challenge it). Im very much of old loyal EAC user, and til now, i never had problem with EAC, some says its hard to use and need user friendly tweaking. A few points:

First of all, I've been involved in this for *a while* and wrote my own guide a while back on how to achieve competent rips and encodes:

http://www.3dsoundsurge....s/articles/MP3/MP3.html

I daresay that with the exception of one poster here (Hi cristoofar!), I may well have been at this longer than most of you. TRUST ME, you're not telling me anything new here.

I also happen to believe that software should be easy and intuitive to use, requiring a minimum of tinkering - EAC is not. I'd rather hand AudioGrabber to the average 15-year-old making MP3s for the various file sharing services than EAC - I'll have a better chance of them doing a half-decent job.

Why?

Because users do NOT read the manual, do NOT take the time to properly configure software and generally want ONE button to do it ALL right NOW. One learns this after having worked in IT for a number of years - it's an immutable law of UserKind. Any admonitions to the contrary only highlight the inexperience of the one uttering them.

Regarding the competency of one ripping program over another, it's six of one and half dozen of the other. As long as you're using a special application program like AG, EAC or CDex and avoid the all-in-one garbage, you're in good hands.

We now return you to the rants of "the faithful"...

Both are good programs, but I have not found EAC to be superior to AG. AG can produce the same crc file each time, which proves the rips are consistent. EAC is freeware which is it's one advantage, but I just have not found it to be "better" than AG. Both are flexible, both are updated by the authors, and both are great programs. It is just that some people want to use a simpler GUI, and have to do less "tinkering" to make good rips. For them , AG fills the bill. For those who like to have more settings to play around with, you have EAC. Best of both worlds!
In a way it is kind of funny - all this talk about striving for exact audio rips, then we take these perfect specimens & apply lossy encoding to them! LOL

even though they dont update it anymore..this is the best accelerator still to date that ..and is free spyware and adware free...great ad blocking and the best prefetcher one that actualy works correctly not only that but you are the one who sets exactly what you want prefetched "aka" (keywords)..unlike others that guess for you and prefetch a bunch of crap you would never view or dont load pages correctly half the time..works good on XP and all browsers..in opera or netscape based browsers you will have to set the preference in the proxy settings of the browser to 127.0.0.0 on port 81 for it to work on them..it auto does it on any IE based browser.to many options
to mention that are great ..its a good set it and forget
it tool and is not outdated by any means to this day.

Hi roj, if you want good rips, EAC is what you need. It has better error checking than other rippers and is highly configurable. No more quirks in my songs! I don't know what you mean by "most people will screw up", but in my opinion this is a piece of cake to configure. Just like spikeymikey says, people ought to take a minute to read the help file or surf to one of the many great tutorials about EAC. "Out-of-the-box" programmes like audiograbber are cute and fancy, but most people get mediocre rips because they don't take the time to configure it.

roj, I both agree and disagree. AudioGrabber indeed does have everything you need to rip/encode out of the box. EAC can rip wav's right out of the box too, but the harder part for the "average" user seems to be finding and setting up the encoder. There are alot of resources on the web for setting up EAC if they take a few minutes to read up on some literature. The HELP menu also has internet links that point directly to good sites. Hopefully the menu will actually work in the release version. I understand what you're saying about ease of use but I think that this program isn't necessarely for the average user, but the more experienced power user. After all, an average user will be fine with the average quality of other rippers and encoders.

Good God, the new EAC is out (although its not an official 1) but who give a damn, EAC definitely the best rip tool around. MMJ, CDEx, Audiograbber, step aside. King of Rip is here. And i really mean it. I try it on my old scratched CD, and the result is superb, 11 VBR track sweet to the ears.

Exact Audio Copy is a fantastic program - fantastic! Let me make that clear. But this is a pre-beta release, not even at beta stage yet. If you read the disclaimer on the homepage regarding this pre-beta release, it doesn't make for encouraging reading. Use version 0.9 Beta 4 if you would like to try this excellent piece of software - do not use the pre-beta unless you are a serious beta tester willing to take risks. Otherwise, enjoy ;)

Probably my most used utility. Has most of what you need including a WAV editor and audio CD burning software. It's free and solid. The screenshot is outdated though, looks a bit better now.

Yes, no question that at the moment this is the best way to copy audio CDs, or individual tracks. Also a decent front-end to LAME and a number of other audio compression encoders. It has an unbelievable amount of features that the options menus might be daunting for people new to the program. But once you have your settings dialed in you're in good copying shape.

Still great...seems to be about ready for the final release. The best program for ripping music from CDs and a decent audio CD burner as well.

Pure gold! If you're into restoring old audio cassettes or LPs be sure to look at its Wav editor. It has by far the best noise reduction software I've tried. Although it's like Cooledit's noise reduction, it's far better at it and doesn't compromise sound quality as much. Tape hiss is easily removed.

I've been using this program along with several external MP3 codecs to transfer most of my CD collection to one of my hard drives. It peformed flawlessly on over 350 CDs. Small and efficient. Nice concept, isn't it!

Very impressive. This is the only CD extractor I know of that lets you extract data from before track 1. That may sound like a stupid thing to do, but my X-Files TV soundtrack CD has two hidden tracks that you have to rewind past the beginning of the CD to hear, and this is the only way I could get .MP3s of it digitally.

I have been using EAC since version .85. I tried many cda extractors, and stopped once I found this one. Once I ripped a track from a cd that was unplayable because of a scratch on the cd surface. EAC took several hours for that track(one of my favorite songs), but afterwards when I burned it sounded fine. I recommend this for the audio perfectionist.

This is by far the best riping-programs, I'd even say it one of the best programs out there!
If you thinks germans are good at making cars, try quality german software. ;-
Don't forget to have a look at the "Actions"-menu,
where you will find the tools to manipulate and record audio in a way
that no other audio program offers.

You think it's slow? I say it's thorough.
You say it's hard to configure? I say it's got all the options.

Also, if you are behind a HTTP-firewall this is probably the only CDDB-connection you will get in Windows.

For the serious audiophile who wants to make PERFECT copies. The configuration may turn you off but don't be discouraged! Just look at the great tutorial setup for it, follow the steps, and your on your way to making perfect copies. Used in conjunction with CDRWIN and you will never know the difference between the CD you copied and your CDR. Also, great for MP3 extracts and encoding. The program hooks into just about every MP3 encoding engine out there on the net. The best part out of all this, the program is Postercardware. Send the man a postcard from where you are from thats all he asks of his time. Do yourself a favor and dropkick your copy of Audiocatalyst, Xing, Musicmaker, whatever, and pick a copy of Exact Audio Copy.

This is one of the best rippers I have ever used. It assures that your MP3's come out right, it really takes out the guest work. It is harder to use then a program like Audiograbber, but IMHO, it just can't be beat. Best of all, its still free! If your familar with rippers, try it out.

Not the easiest of programs to use and its not obvious how to rip audio tracks. Lots of options so it doesnt look to bad really.
