I've been using F-Prot at home since before Windows. I've only had one infection in that time that it couldn't handle (BitDefender boot CD took that one out). It's not as flashy as Norton (which I wouldn't trust anyway since Symantec was hacked), and it's not as complicated to configure as McAfee (which we ditched at work in favor of MBAM+MSE), but it's much smaller, updated often, simple to use, and it works. I suspect that a lot of the "antivirus comparison" websites are paid for by one or more of the antivirus vendors (not Frisk), which is why F-Prot often is ranked far below "the leaders". The home license is great at $29/yr.

Terrible!
Downloaded trial version, first exc downloaded from Frisk was corrupt.
Second worked fine, but update hung at about sixty percent.
Had to kill update with task manager and start over.
This time update would not even open.
Decided to remove program and damn uninstal utility stuck also!
Downloaded so called "removal tool" from F-prot,did nothing at all.
Ended up going into safe mode to remove program and regedit to remove legacy keys.

Maybe its just my machine but I had a colon full of of F-Prot.
Back to Avira!

Good detection rates and small system footprint. Beats McAfee or Norton every day of the week!

Still no mention on their website regarding support for VISTA. Perhaps they have forgotten VISTA went RTM late November and it's now June.

ssb

ssb reviewed v6.0.7.0 on May 3, 2007

F-Prot used to be my favorite AV, since DOS days. Small, lightweight and fast it served me well all these years, until now...

Now the bad things; Despite the fact some users like Vista or not, it's the current OS version thus Frisk as a serious company should make F-Prot v6 compatible with it.
They were developing v6 for more than two years therefore they had all the time to make it work with Vista.

When Frisk first released version 6 of F-prot, they promised Vista support "before Vista official release". Four months later, they are still not able to offer anything but excuses. At the same time, most competitive AV software, including some freeware, are fully Vista compatible...

Very disappointing!

This is for people who want to scan fast. It's definitely the fastest of all AVs. As for not working with Vista, who the hell wants Vista. I have Ultimate and it's a piece of crap.

version 6.0.6.0 has a nasty bug in the Outlook plugin, meaning that all outgoing email gets deleted. make sure you upgrade to 6.0.6.1 asap!!

marked down due to this bug (the first showstopper in 5 years of use for me) and lack of 64bit or vista

I liked it very much!!! Its very light, even for older systems. Also it demands only small updates, not slowing me when I'm on-line.
The UI is not straightforward, but after playing with it for a while, I've been familiar with it.

As I already wrote I consider F-Prot as one of the best antiviral tools. However, I would change some things in the newest release:

- temporary disactivaction of the program (like F-StopW in v.3.16) is a must! Every antiviral tools reports falsely that some program contain viruses (3.16f does it with some builds of Picasa and plugins for dbPowerAMP - try to install them, esp. Picasa with working F-Prot 3.16f and you will know what I describe). You cannot switch it off now, so in such cases the program will not allow for the installation!

- some files are automatically deleted (and the recovery of the files is not possible) when one opens infected (or "infected") archive. Mistake! I want to decide if they should be deleted or quarantined. The reason is exactly the same as above - cry wolves.

- some improvements in the GUI are needed, e.g. how come that my Microsoft Outlook is protected if it is NOT installed at all? I use Thunderbird only!

I have used the previous two betas and can certainly notice speed improvements.
The UI is d**n ****ing confusing!!! I wish they hire some decent UI people!!! (me ? ;) )

It caused "winlogon.exe" to shoot up tp 70% CPU usage.

After reboots and trying to figure out how to make it play nice, I tried to uninstall it. "msiexec.exe" then shot up to 90+% CPU and the uninstaller stalled. Disabling automatic file system protection corrected the problem and the uninstaller was allowed to finish.

Very, very disappointed in this version.

sQin: You are incorrect, F-Prot version 6 uses the 4.2.X engine while the old version uses the 3.1X engine...

sQin

sQin reviewed v6.0.4.2 Beta on Jul 21, 2006

still uses old (maybe improved) engine. very few options, no proactive defence. Only new GUI. I liked that antivirus so much due to lightness, but its detection becomes weaker year by year (watch AV tests)

yokozuna

yokozuna reviewed v6.0.4.1 Beta on Jul 1, 2006

F-Prot is one of the best antiviral tools I know. Such antiviruses are few and far between which are good in real life. I know some which are better on paper, but they are not good as work horses.
The beta is good, however, it behaves like betas use to behave. On one hand your trial license will be valid till the end September (at least in my case, not only 30 days declared by the producer), on the other some new features do not work well (file system protection). I rate it 5/5 because the new engine is MUCH better than the old one. I prepared a special CD-R with various keygens and cracks downloaded from p2p networks. The new version of F-Prot was the best in classifying them, much better than the average of respected antiviral tools.
Moreover, the new F-Prot is as light as the old one. My Hitachi HDD (250 gigabytes, almost full) is scanned in less than 30 minutes. The utilisation of RAM and CPU resources is really low.

F-Prot is still the fastest gun in the west. Scans at speed that put other antivirus programs to shame.

QBgreen

QBgreen reviewed v6.0.4.1 Beta on Jun 30, 2006

The beta gets a "3". I can only guess at why Frisk has waited so long to update their program. With so many high quality choices available, F-Prot just may become an also-ran, which would be a shame to this 16 year computer veteran.

Not as good as Anti Vir Classic, so good it is I bought Anti Vir Premium, cost around £13 and works a treat:)

Heard good and bad reports about F-Prot I tried it myself, missed some virus`s.. they had a good program once, back in the days off DOS, not there program is like well, not as good anymore IMO

A good antivirus...

Cons: Its real-time scanner isn't very configurable. Weak on unpackers.

Pros: Superb tech support. Very tiny impact on system resources. Updates ~daily. Gets a pretty good ranking at AV-comp & #11 of 50 at Virus.gr.

Prospects: Version 4 of F-prot will almost certainly return this steady-eddy AV to its rightful place in the upper tier of security programs. As to when version 4 will be released -- all we know is "they're working on it." ^_^

sQin

sQin reviewed v3.16f on Jan 10, 2006

good protection, small memory usage, but its realtime protection highly decreases archives/video files opening time.
Btw its engine is so old , it cant disinfect automaticaly.

My friend's computer was infected with very vile combination of nasty virus and bunch of spyware programs. F-prot could not even find any of them. Norton, on other hand, found virus and spyware but failed to delete them. So both anti-viruses failed, but F-prot could not even detect the problem. I understand that F-prot is fast, but it is also useless in difficult situation.

if you use p2p apps, esp. Shareaza, don't use this antivirus as it fails to filter many backdoors. go for Kaspersky! although pretty slow, it will catch everything!

I rate this 4 only b/c otherwise it fares pretty well (it seems, at least)

i scanned a file i knew to be infected with f-prot, then i scanned it with kaspersky. both had up to date virus definitions, but only kaspersky recognized it. thats a rare occurence however. f-prot is faster than lightning when compared to kaspersky and pretty much every other av. so one missed virus which wasnt actually an infection is no big deal.

i give f-prot 4 3/4 stars

Inray

Inray reviewed v3.15a on Aug 24, 2004

Never understood, why so many people, use Norton AV or other crap like that. Not only has limited protection but it's also huge, resource hungry and unstable.
In contrast, F-Prot has small footprint, advanced features, fast scanning engine and cause no problems to host.
I'm using F-Prot, more than seven years now and i suggest it to all of my clients.

rotjong

rotjong reviewed v3.15a on Aug 24, 2004

F-Prot is a great AV. It's light on the resources and does a good job. I've used it for awhile and always been happy. I've recently experimented with Eset NOD32 and like it a bit better. Both are great but for now I am running NOD32 for my real-time scanner.

ssb

yokozuna

Give F-Prot a chance if you are tired of bloated antiviral tools that slow down your machine. It needs around 2 megabytes of RAM and it is extremely fast and effective. You won't be disappointed!

Dapple

Dapple reviewed v3.14c on Feb 25, 2004

F-Prot does have email scan online if you are registered , and it has never let a virus come to me via email yet. It is quick on updates and is not bloatware like nortons.

rotjong

rotjong reviewed v3.14c on Feb 24, 2004

Release notes:
"With version 3.14c an important change was made to the RealTime Protector. It now automatically scans inside small archives (archives less than 64 kB) instead of waiting until an attempt is made to extract the files from the archive. This important enhancements for future protection against serious looming threats makes version 3.14c a vital update to you computer
security."

Otherwise various unlised bug fixes were done. I like F-Prot a lot. I do like the cmd-line scanner. A number of other companies offer them so I don't know how a company can be picked on for that. KAV has their own cmd-line and so does AntiVir among others. I use redundant scanners on-demand and don't run real-time. I wouldn't consider this to be the best real-time AV but it's good on the resources, generally. For on-demand I give it high marks.

dillweed

dillweed reviewed v3.14c on Feb 24, 2004

Small, fast, and effective. Much better than the bloated and buggy offerings of McAfee, Norton, KAV 4+, etc.

I can't believe an anti-virus tool today would not have email protection. Let's see the active virus list. Email viruses are there. This rehash of an old tool still is proud of having DOS scanning ability. Like I've seen a DOS installation in years... And no, it is not useful for recovery as they claim. I and many others run NTFS which DOS boot diskettes do not recognize.
In all, this company at least needs to get in the 1990s.
Offerings with no online/email protection should be avoided like the plague as they will not protect you against likely threats.

ssb

ssb reviewed v3.12c on Dec 22, 2002

Although i believe that an antivirus program is a "MUST HAVE" for any user, most detection programs are huge, bloated garbageware. Most of them have several sideefects in your computer's speed and stability (Norton and McAffee for example). Multi megabyte monsters offer a little and any user should avoid their use.
F-Prot IS NOT one of them. Unbelievable speed, stability and detection hit in a nice small (7MB) package. Authors offer online updates and excellent support via their website.
The program itself is a gem. It has demand scanner, realtime virus & trojan detection and netword drives scanning. Excellent customization and reporting as well as a scheduler for people who need it (i don't).
It even includes a pure MSDOS scanner (for the old timers) as well as multiple profiles for all demands.

After years of using McAffee and other (except Norton which is nothing campared with them), i feel totally secure and ... happy with F-Prot. And don't forget that it's one of the very first AV programs ever created.

I really suggest it

Pros: F-Prot Antivirus scored in top 3 in every antivirus virus test I could find on the web. It is relatively simple and easy to use.

Cons: No e-mail protection. Trial users have to update it manually.

That is why I still use Norton, though it is slower than F-Prot.
