Still the best version of Filezilla - they've mostly ruined it with the v3 series. This is the last version which contains Mode Z compression, and the last version which automatically monitors local source directory for changes and refreshes it in realtime. Plus it loads faster than FZ3. And for those reasons, FZ3 -- I'm out.

Free is too expensive for this thing.
I often do huge uploads to my web host. For whatever reason, whenever I do, I get socket errors from the host after many hours of uploading. Maybe the host sucks, I don't know and it doesn't matter.
When FileZilla is being used for the upload, and the socket error occurs, the piece of garbage automatically restarts the upload, even though I have the upload restart settings configured to RESUME, not restart. I don't care if I can totally disable retries, because I don't want to do that. I just want the client not to do something moronic, like rewrite a multi-GB file that is in the middle of being uploaded.
When FTP Voyager is being used, and the socket error occurs, it does not restart the upload. This isn't the best behavior, but it sure beats what FileZilla does.
Why don't the authors of FTP clients make it so they simply resume automatically? Why? Is this not brain-dead obvious behavior to at least have as an option?

The best FTP client: free, fast, simple, lot's of proxy support,... Version 3 is completely useless except it started to be released also for Linux.

pros: It's free
cons: too simple, outdated, interface is from the year 2000, no need to use "external" FTP aplication for simple things...
conclusion:
On Windows platform, Total Commander 7 does EVERYTHING this does and more, in a more pleasant and convenient way with a much much much better interface. Abilities like synchronize directories etc just make it my FTP choice for simple things. But it is a commercial application...
On linux...FileZilla 3 looks promising, but not now.
For hardcore FTP players, we have just another leauge of another FTP applications.

Should any developer support an OS that is almost 12 years old? I can't take seriously the complaint of someone who hasn't updated their OS in at least the last five years. I'm glad it doesn't run on Win95 — less bloat for the rest of us.
jerry4dos reviewed v2.2.28 on Sep 29, 2006
It seems that the last version of Filezilla that will work with Win95 is v2_2_19a, which is, fortunately, still availble from the developer's web site. As I write this, this FFBN entry still lists FZ as "OS Support: Windows (All)". Perhaps this listing needs to be updated.

There is no "Settings" menu. There is a "Settings" menu item under the "Edit" menu however. Now that we have the correct menu name figured out, I will reiterate the point I made long ago, which you tried to correct but did not: You cannot set FileZilla to have a horizontal layout. I do not like the vertical layout. This is my point, which stands to this day.
This is a good client, and 3 is a "good" rating.

We're using this in my department at work, for quite a while. It's a favorite among us IT guys, we always recommend it.
"hondaman" mentioned an obscure bug (moving over a half terrabyte of data!), there is a forum link at the FileZilla homepage. If you report any bugs, the author will look into it, he's pretty good about that. He periodically updates the program.

A pinacle of the open source world. No problems and very usable and standard user interface. Hands down all you need for basic ftp and secure transfer needs.
Wish that would make me switch to using this full-time: A powerful recursive folder/file sync abilty (helps big time in site admin). The more powerful apps like ftp voyager do this well now.

Great program. I'm very happy to see that the developer has finally fixed it so the window and file panes stay consistently sized after closing and reopening.
Why would you want to split files before uploading? FileZilla already supports resuming uploads, you just gotta select 'Resume' instead of 'Overwrite' in the options.

2.26 is out:
Fixed bugs:
- Fix problem where transfers were incorrectly resumed.
- Compatibility problem with servers sending 4yz reply code to MKD command
- Local drag&drop operations didn't move all files
- Timezone offset not stored properly for reconnect button
- Fix issue with remembering maximized state
- Round filesizes up if needed
norz reviewed v2.2.25 on Jul 4, 2006
Good open-source program! :)
Feature *wishes*:
- ability to split a big file into several smaller files before *uploading* (eg a ~2GB file into 10 files of 200MB). Otherwise the splitting has to be done prior to uploading, and can be time consuming)
- ability to automatically retry to upload a file if the upload fails in the middle.
Thanks for this nice program! :)
cowgaR reviewed v2.2.25 on Jun 30, 2006
still under developement (new build each month at least) with almost NO functionality offered and horrible interface (context menu madness) and no buttons whatsoever.
it is free, which is good, and it is low on resources, thats all.
but my old companion - Total Commander - is doing MUCH better in MUCH MUCH simpler way with MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH more file options and greater control over filesystem (it treats FTP as normal disk, on which the power of control via TC is infamous and best in industry).
I just need CTRL+N in TC and I'm on FTP w/o even knowing that (or writing port!)...and TC isn't specialized FTP client like this one.
this specialized FTP application really need some rework, cos I don't see one advantage over simplified yet very functional Total Commander (if there is, please respond). And if I want more robust FTP, I choose Smart FTP or gazillions of TC plugins.
my 2 cents, 5 -1(for horrible interface) -1(for Total Commander being a file-manager surpassing it in a lot of way on its own field)

Excellent. A nice fast, clear FTP programme. I plugged my details into the sitemanager - 4 separtate websites - configured it to overwrite if newer and away it went, at a cracking speed too. The interface isn't the prettiest but it works a treat. It makes a very strong case for itself.

seier, SmartFTP is FREE for non-commercial use. Unless you are using it within a business then it's free. I've been using it for ages and it's the best FTP client out there. FileZilla is good, but not as good as SmartFTP.
seier reviewed v2.2.24b on Jun 10, 2006
Hi Cyberdog,
FlashFXP and SmartFTP are 25 and 37 dollars respectively. This mutha is free and works great.
Can't hide the message log? Click "View" --> "Hide message log".
Monitoring the clipboard and using it are both slow (The CPU is constantly wasted during not FTP clipboard interaction) and or ways of URL exchange. That sounds more like the kind of feature one would need from a download manager. Give Net Vampire a try www.NetVampire.com, it can't download multiple chunks of the same file at once, but accordingly it has low CPU overhead, a nice browser drop box, is wicked stable, and can hibernate when it finishes all your downloads.
I agree FileZilla needs a move feature.
Pretty icons would make it a lot slower, most people using FTP are developers and are more concerned with file extensions than icons. If you want icons go "View" --> "Local List View" --> "Large Icons".
>No connection/bandwidth graphing
Net Vampire does that, but really a readout of Kbps for 30 seconds is typically just as good/reliable.
For 37 bucks smart FTP had better be faster, it probably does download multiple chunks simultaneously, or it creates more connections to the same data.
Cheers,
Christian Blackburn

Enhanced list of criticisms:
- Handling of files on UNC paths is poor at best: you can't transfer folders from UNC paths. And contrary to those of you whose computer experience is apparently limited to what's in your basement, these are used extensively in some environments.
- Doesn't support multiple simultaneous connections. Not per transfer, which I'm well aware it has, but connections to multiple remote sites at once.
- No FXP. FXP uses the FTP protocol... FlashFXP and SmartFTP both support it, as well as all standard FTP features. Some of you clearly have no idea what you're talking about when you say they're not related.
- Can't customize the interface. What if I don't like the message log at the top (which I don't)?
- No grabbing FTP urls from the clipboard
- No 'move' feature to delete files after transfer
- Rather ugly...looks are a minimal issue in any app, but pretty icons would be nice IMO.
- No connection/bandwidth graphing
- Often slower transfers for me than SmartFTP

What mrr2ro said.
mrr2ro reviewed v2.2.24a on May 30, 2006
CyberDog Obviously has no idea what RTFM is or how to apply it.
Multiple connections – How about if you go to edit / settings / File transfer Settings and enter however many connections you want open in that little box where it CLEARLY SAYS “Use multiple connections to transfer files”, you can even keep browsing the same ftp server while transferring files. – Imagine that!!!
No move feature to delete – How about highlight and delete key – pretty hard I guess.
Or drag and drop.
FXP - File eXchange Protocol (FXP) –granted the remote server to remote server connection is nice, but this is an FTP application, not an FXP application. And how many people actually need this feature – If you need, then get an FXP application.
SSL / SFTP – I think one of the best features of Filezilla.
Universal/Uniform Naming Convention – How many regular users in a UNIX environment or Winblows environment use this anyway? How many people use command line anymore? If this \\Shared1_svr\Shared1\WGroups\Network\file is faster and easier than drag and drop… then may be your point carries some weight. But then why do you need a GUI for that?
Following that point of view, perhaps I should complain that my blender does not make me coffee.
I believe this type of open source software’s for the entire community that need a simple ftp / sftp application.
It is a GREAT application, for any general FTP and secure SFTP, this is the best!
CyberDog reviewed v2.2.24a on May 30, 2006
@aszure: Do you even know what FXP is? It uses the FTP protocol and yet it's not related to FTP? Really... FlashFXP and SmartFTP both support it, as well as standard FTP features. One item on my list was addressed previously, so here's an updated list:
[Edit] @mrr2ro: "Who uses the command line anymore"? You clearly have no experience in any serious computing environments, where both the command line, and network based storage, are used extensively. See below about multiple connections.
- Handling of files on UNC paths is poor at best: you can't transfer folders from UNC paths!
- Doesn't support multiple simultaneous connections. - Not per transfer, but connections to multiple remote sites at once.
- No FXP
- Can't customize the interface. What if I don't like the message log at the top?
- No grabbing FTP urls from the clipboard
- No 'move' feature to delete files after transfer
- Rather ugly...looks are a minimal issue in any app, but pretty icons would be nice IMO.
- No connection/bandwidth graphing

Cumbersome interface? I don't see where you get that from, it has the cleanest, simplest layout of any FTP program I've tried. It doesn't try to dumb down everything with stupid wizards and eye candy. This has been my favorite client for a long time now, I try others from time to time but nothing beats this.

Geeze Cyberdog...for starters, why should an FTP client HAVE to have support for FXP? It would make as much sense b****ing that it doesnt have usenet, p2p, or torrent support. Its an FTP program numb nuts.
Its not the most featured program I have ever used, however, for whats required of an FTP client, I dont see where this falls short. Of course it would be perfect if it could keep my grocery list, but its damn good, and open source to boot.
Don Juan reviewed v2.2.24 on May 26, 2006

CyberDog, send mail to author asking for these features, pointing out to bugs and design mistakes, share your ideas about how (and why) your Dream Ftp Client should look and feel like this and that. You can even write some code or paint a few nice-looking icons and sent these to author.
Trust me, if you rargumets are strong enough, it WILL change programm's developement. Author is interested in making a good appilcation, not the "something that works and could be sold".
This is why OpenSource exists. OpenSource software is written as it should be, and it works as it should work. There's no anything like this: "Oh! Our customers require this, this, and that! We should implement these features in 2 weeks, that's why we must use design solutions like this and that...Yeah-yeah, i know they're ugly, non-standard and will cause troubles later, but this is easy ways that will lead us to cheaper developement and more profits!"

CyberDog reviewed v2.2.23a on May 23, 2006
FileZilla is certainly good, but it's definitely not great. I think some people get a little overzealous with free/opensource and overlook some of the really nice features found in pay or shareware apps. Examples here:
- Doesn't support multiple simultaneous connections. :(
- No FXP
- Can't customize the interface. What if I don't like the message log at the top???
- Handling of files on UNC paths is poor at best
- No grabbing FTP urls from the clipboard
- No 'move' feature to delete files after transfer
- No 'Desktop' in the tree view
- Rather ugly...looks are a minimal issue in any app, but pretty icons would be nice IMO.
- No connection/bandwidth graphing
- Connection stability? I've had issues in the past with the app being a little unreliable with long connections. Unfortunately I can't really substantiate this with hard facts, but it's damaged my personal impression.
I'm sure I can come up with more if I take time. I'm not saying it's bad, but it's hardly perfect.
mjm01010101 reviewed v2.2.23a on May 23, 2006
I'm going to probably stop reviewing this software: It's the pinnacle of near perfection in an FTP client.
Amrit reviewed v2.2.23a on May 23, 2006
Excellent program, hence the five stars.
However, I really miss a desktop-button in the folderpane. It's a bit cumbersome to get to the desktop via c -> documents and settings -> ....
I know I can save the program 'remember' the last configuration, but a quick connection to the desktop would be nice.
I use the desktop for what it's name stands for, maybe it would be a tiny improvement to this very good program. (unless of course if I missed/overlooked something in the settings)

Fantastic software. The only thing keeping me from using this in place of LeapFTP is the lack of customization to the window panes. I'd like my queue manager to be positioned on the left side column and have a 4 pane setup - each equal size... Local Folders -> Remote Folders, Queue -> Status...
Otherwise, I would love to jump headfirst into this and drop LeapFTP (which has not been updated for a very long time)

Every once in a very long while I'll run into an incompatible FTP server -- usually some old NT server -- and for that, I have to use the command-line and do every step manually. Yes, Filezilla is free, so there's you a couple of stars. Yes it seems to be a very stable program, but I've had endless problems with it screwing up transfers. A lot of times when I'm trying to download a file, it creates it on my local drive (0 byte file), then notices that, hey there's a 0 byte file, want to overwrite it? OK overwrite, but there's already a file, overwrite again? OK, but the file, der, I already tried too many times, you'll need to reset the transfer. Grrr.
Then when I upload a file and overwrite it, it will try, but sometimes it only overwrites part of the file, so I get a screwed up mixed file.
Also, there's nothin quite like transferring a huge file, having it screw up half way through, then not being able to resume because it messed up the file.
I've tried Filezilla on several different machines on several different networks with several different FTP servers, and always some sort of goofy problem.

In the interface department this is typical OSS software designed by developers for developers.

one odd thing i havent been able to figure out is an issue i have sometimes where i am downloading files (15+meg files)in resume mode and for whatever reason it will download larger files than what is listed on the server.. i will have to see if this version fixes it..
if i had to choose the best ftp software, and was willing to pay for one, it would have to be flashfxp.. filezilla is definitely the best freeware though...

Hmmm... Did I mention skins or eye candy in my previous comments? No, I just mentioned interface flexibility and customizability; and by that I meant simple things like the ability to place the local/remote panes horizontally, rather than vertically, or to change the interface font or toolbar layout. These things aren't "bloat"; they are good program design.
If you prefer for a programmer to decide for you how the interface should look, and deny you the ability to change it to suit your needs and liking, that's wonderful, but try not to jump to conclusions where I'm concerned.

I agree with ramian.
For the features and ease of use Filezilla is the best. I have used in the past WSFTP, which has become bloatware, and I just reviewed SmartFTP.
I believe all you get with SmartFTP is just belss and whistles, which is the beginnings of bloatware. Filezilla just offers flat out the best FTP client out there. Ease of use, functionality, etc.
You really need to understand, yeah "bells and whistles" sometimes add to functionality, but not always. Besides, I can get the capabilities needed for FTP with Filezilla, and YES it is FREE!, while you get to try SmartFTP for a short while, then you must buy it.
I like the idea that you can get this kind of power and not have to pay through the nose for it. Why did I say this this way? Just seeing the word RENEWAL on SmartFTP's site tells me you may end up constantly paying to keep it running.
ramian reviewed v2.2.12a on Mar 12, 2005
This is the simplest and the easiest FTP client I've ever used. I've got computer-illiterate friends who've caught on to using this just like that. I love the way all settings are saved in the xml file, so that it's always there after every install, upgrade and how they can be easily backed up. I love the simplicity of the site manager and the level of control available.
Caleb,
I don't see how the interface of SmartFTP is any better/worse. The layout can be as easily configured for both clients. And the fact that it is free means it's accessible to everyone unlike paid/shareware. Opensource allows problems to be identified and fixed quickly. I personlly don't see why a program should be given so low a score just because of these reasons.
BNuser reviewed v2.2.12a on Mar 12, 2005
Works stable, has all the features I need and the GUI is clean and accessible. It's my pick. Well everybody has preferences, but at least I'd vote neutral if I can't get along with a programs interface, if the program does well what it claims to do.
Caleb reviewed v2.2.12a on Mar 12, 2005
I don't understand why people call this "the best".
The interface is simply horrible!
Don't just vote this the best because it's opensource, or free.. that's really not a way to determine whether a product is good or not.
I'll stick to SmartFTP for now which has a superior interface (the only lacking feature in smartftp is SFTP support, but I can live with that).

This digital turd wouldn't display my C:\Temp directory, or my current user directory under "Documents and Settings", and for no apparent reason (no, the hidden attribute is not set on them). I've tried a lot of FTP clients, and this is the only one that had this strange problem.
You people who grade on a curve for freeware really need a clue. What a disservice that senseless practice is when you just want to know what software is best, and can decide on your own what you're willing to pay, if anything.

It supports several kinds of encrypted connections, including automatic FTP over SSH which allows it to connect encrytped to my Linux PureFTPd server. Queuing is very well done. screw bulletproof, filezilla is the shizzle fo rizzle. Seriously though, the client is awesome and the only one worth using as it is free. No other ftp app is that much better than filezilla to justify paying for it.

This is an excellent piece of software which is constantly evolving. With full source and a host of features, what more can you ask for. I used WS_FTP for many years, but it seemed to be going in the wrong direction.
