Given that the prog heavily prompts for a backup to be taken and includes a restore facility the last, negative, review claiming all settings to bhe lost due to Firetune seems to be rather obvious junk...to put it kindly.
Firetune works well and is well thought through...it's also entirely safe if you do the backup it so heavily prompts you to do and makes it so easy for you to do...all it takes is one click. I've used it for some time and never found a need to restore from backup to fix a Firetune caused issue.

Apparently you know very little about Firefox 2.0.0.4. To make such a blind statement. Millions are not wrong. Safe, Updated frequently so it's secure, extensions so you can customize it to your liking, not bloated and it goes on and on and not to mention the Mcafee Siteadvisor extension *Siteadvisor.oom).
IE 7 is also based on Firefox for its security.
Firefox is a top of the line browser along with Opera 9.2.

Well, On slower systems this does a great job at speeding things up.On faster systems, It tweaks it a bit but it won't be needed unless you download loads of extensions..
The program is good for firefox (program with extensions).Browsers like opera won't need such a thing due to it not having extensions. If you don't download extensions with firefox and leave it as is from when you installed it,You won't need this really either. It will run fine...
Otherwise, For someone like me who uses loads of extensions... i can tell the difference ..

5/5 for doing what it claims and doing it well.
Again, I will reiterate as crosscut below me did, that if mozilla took the time to optimize its code, apps like this wouldnt be necessary and firefox would be a lot better, imho anyways.
Now, go ahead and flame away sophist, do what you do best.

As flaming is what you seem to do best. I agree with Metshrine. While firefox is an ok browser, not the best, but ok, it is plaqued with unoptimized code that leads to high resource usage and slowdown.
Firetune is good, it does its job, it does it well, however, I think that the need for applications of this sort would be eliminated if they simply optimized the code in firefox and fixed some of the LONG STANDING bugs that have existed for years (since .1).
So sophist, how about you take the time to NOT flame others in your "reviews" as I've seen you do in almost every other one of your posts or "review" on this site (since you want to point fingers here).

5/5 for an app that does what it says, but shouldnt be required.
sophist: you call me a troll yet I at least rate the app a 5 for doing what it claims to do? You rate it a 1 because you "dont need it" even thou you dont rate its functionality. Wow, hypocritical
By the way, why dont you try not flaming against others in your reviews and focus on the app at hand ;-) That is the point of a review, not to bad mouth others. So again, dont be hypocritical if you want to call someone a troll.

@Metshrine, Firetune tunes (it does!) mainly on a per-system basis.
Otherwise, everything which is proposed by Firetune may be done "manually" by editing either the options, either the about:config data, either the user.js file. For beginners it's handy, that's all.

So, you're telling me, that in order to get firefox to use even slightly lesser ram than its already bloated core uses, and to get it to respond 1/4 a second faster, I have to use a 3rd party program? Why not just have mozilla fix it?
pffft, waste of time if you ask me. Any browser that requires a TUNING or SPEED UP program, obviously isnt worth my time.

Firetune is a excellent program, speeds up browsing! It would be even better if they didn't include SPYWARE with the installer program! Check out your x:/Windows directory for iun6002.exe program... "iun6002.exe is considered to be a security risk, not only because spyware removal programs flag desktop surveillance personal spyware as spyware, but also because a number of users have complained about its performance." - http://www.auditmypc.com/process/iun6002.asp
Please not that the spyware is only included with the installer program and not with this download.

Fasterfox blocks my internet on Firefox. Simply pages don't load anymore. And yes i tested and i'm sure. This tweak works well.
horsecharles reviewed v1.1.0 on Jan 21, 2006
I do like FasterFox, but this extension will do for lots of folks, since:
1. FasterFox not compatible with DeerPark, won't install unless you hack version reported.
2. This has a couple extras like autocomplete(yeah, that can be accomplished w/o this-- but so can all changes made by both extensions in about:config and/or registry), etc. which means one could use both extensions for different purposes each... for those on FF 1.5 that is.
Contrary to stated specs, this WILL work on win9x, and as well on DeerPark.
And, it does not deserve 2/3 ratings-- those who know enough to want to smear it thusly, should be performing their own manual tweaks,,,they will then bloat their browser less & thus keep it speedier-- the main intent of these extensions in the first place! Focus kids, stay focused!!!
ModderXManiac reviewed v1.1.0 on Jan 18, 2006
Prefetching, blah.
I use Fasterfox because it actually works, this does miniscule tweaks. The difference is actual notable on Fasterfox. And given Fasterfox is an extention, it'll work on more than just the Winblows version of FF.
Note I didn't give a rating of 1, as I showed mercy to the author.
precurgent reviewed v1.1.0 on Jan 18, 2006
The /prefetch gimmick was a placebo, for crying out loud. Windows builds and maintains the .PF file accordingly, and using /prefetch with Firefox is absolutely useless. You don't need to (pretend to) maintain separate .PF files--it just doesn't work that way.
imanino reviewed v1.0.9 on Dec 26, 2005
For Firefox, I find these "optimizer" programs to be of limited utility. The greatest speed increases I have seen have been in the coding of the browser itself. Firetune is certainly easy to use and install and has some useful tweaks. That being said, in benchmarking, I haven't seen anything overwhelming. I'm also glad they stopped teasing us with the prefetch as well. Prefetching in general can either speed things up a little or slow things down a ton and so the idea that prefetch=speed is a misunderstanding of the way prefetching works in Windows XP as a whole. Sometimes if you want to get your computer going when it's sluggish the first thing you need to do is clean the pre-fetching folder. Performance adds are almost program to program, case by case, configuration by configuration dependent.
dejavu reviewed v1.0.9 on Dec 14, 2005
Fasterfox didn't work well with my firefox. This program never bother me!
mjm01010101 reviewed v1.0.9 on Dec 13, 2005
You are wrong, the prefetch was a placebo. Good that they removed this.
Kramy reviewed v1.0.9 on Dec 13, 2005
>> Nice to see they got rid of the placebo /prefetch option.
/prefetch isn't a placebo. By writing to a different file, it then learns to prefetch data for your fully configured FF, rather than the default installed one(and then updating that)...
But yeah...for the 0.20s it saves you AFTER the first few times it's slower...not really worth it. :P
I've never had this mess up my FF profile. Fasterfox though...that wipes out half your settings!
I recommend this and about:config for firefox tweaking!
The MAZZTer reviewed v1.0.9 on Dec 13, 2005
Nice to see they got rid of the placebo /prefetch option.
However, one thing I noticed that could use tweaking. The program says I need to close Firefox before it can apply tweaks, but it does not enforce this! (It could be as easy as a FindWindow call.)
This program doesn't really have many options. I recommend FasterFox for Firefox tweaking, as it gives you more options and more control over it's tweaks. And it's confident enough in it's programming not to repeatedly let you know it might screw up your profile.

stopbuggingme reviewed v1.0.8 on Dec 9, 2005
Yeah it does, but your the fool judging it on that one part.
It includes other tweaks that the Firefox developers told us actually do make a difference if set correctly. These tweaks have been around a long time, but you had to set them through about:config. This tool provides a nice interface with some good values for the settings based on connection and PC speed.

1) It integrates well being an XPI.

3) Very small filesize.
4) Tons of options if you like tweaking.
5) As a bonus it displays the pageload time.

The prefetch switch has nil of a difference on program load. Otherwise, this program does contain some specific optimizations for FF that may improve performance.
ShellShock reviewed v1.0.6 on Aug 19, 2005
"...as it turns out, WMP only uses this option to speed up caching of streams or something, and it has nothing to do with XP."
You're an idiot; Check %windir%\prefetch - it contains prefetch information to commonly used executables; prefetching improves performance related to the loading of visual styles and themes, thus decreasing (if only marginally) the load time of these programs.
The MAZZTer reviewed v1.0.6 on Aug 18, 2005
[Edit: Carp, I didn't realize writing a new review deleted the old one. This post is a reply to the one above.]
You will then notice that the prefetch folder contains files that relate to programs YOU HAVE NOT LAUNCHED WITH /prefetch:1, showing immediately that this isn't the cause of programs being cached there.
Also, I fail to see how your personal attack on my intelligence invalidates my argument.
After some RESEARCH (which I recommend you try as well as it is a very good way to build an argument) I found that the OS does indeed look at /prefetch, but it DOES NOT use it to cache a program into \prefetch\, but to change the way windows already prefetches for SPECIAL apps. Currently only WMP is able to take advantage of the /prefetch switch.

I would like to endorse the comments of sophist_dreams May 12, 2005 Version: 1.0.3 , particularly:
"...if you like to add and remove extensions and themes (or even if you have added several) like I do to see what they do, using this program helps clean up and compact your profile and etc, makes the whole thing run faster."
i had already applied various speeed tweaks re network, browsing, rendering... so i didn't really need this app-- only resons i considered it: seemed to contain other tweaks not related to speed, & the sophist endorsement.
Let me tell you, that without removing any extensions, various errors, crashes, slowdowns disappeared-- i believe thery're traceable to some conflict between extensions, so this app has saved me enormous time.
I would request though, for documentation in the style of say, CableNut: what exactly are the numbers/changes/edits being applied with each setting...if this is to appeal to tweakers, the numbers/edits next to each setting name are necessary-- even better, a way for us to further adjust each number... w/o having to compare each profile, open a help file, or having to search in a forum to divine these 'secrets'...

"Not a bash, just a question--if Firefox is supposed to be easier and "simplified" verses IE, why does it need to be optimised?"
Because bourgeoisdude, you can tweak it to get the best out of a system. IE works the same whether you're on DSL or dialup, on a 486 or a Athlon FX55, on 64MB RAM or 2GB. For example, IE only makes two connections to a server, FF makes as many as you decide thus making it able to transfer stuff quicker.

In other words, if you consider yourself a "power user" and you like regularly install Firefox extensions and investigate program settings, preferences, and configurations, you do NOT need this. But less involved users will find this more useful. (Just my thoughts. I could be wrong about some of you!)

Does what it says it will. As for the Adblock 90% of your ads can be blocked with these two filters ads.* ad.* not counting what you might find at a pornsite but Yahoo is a little different. I don't know what woudl stop the porn sites that I am sure you go to.
Johnoost reviewed v0.5 on Mar 23, 2005
Doesnt improve anything u can't do with 1 line in the config.
This version still destroys your adblock settings. Stay away from this and edit the setting manually. This is a crap release.

Works amazingly! Period.
eyv reviewed v0.4 on Mar 21, 2005
Johnoost is quite right. Does not work, and even if it did, does not do anything that manually changing 6 or so settings would not do. Also, manually changing settings does not screw up your existing profile.

Doesnt work and screws your extention settings. Erases all adblock settings. Get network tweak extention and leave this trash alone.

I used this when 0.2 came out & it helped immediately. Version 0.3 as well. I saw comments about needing to back up, but that's an option with the software, and it even gives "you" a warning about the backup (takes 1-2 secs.) before optimizing.
I've not had the problems other people describe at all. I haven't lost anything...I've just benefited from the optimization! Highly recommended.

This tweak is much more reliable and stable and really effective in all connections. even dialup ones. http://www.trap17.com/fo...ox-4x-Faster-t8402.html

i like it.. no negatives with my setup/extensions and noticeably improved speed. i have gone in and tweaked the settings manually before but this saves some time..

It worked very nicely. EASIEST PROGRAM IN THE WORLD TO USE. It really does what it sais, makes it real simple to tweak firefox.
Scary Guy reviewed v0.3 on Mar 18, 2005
I'm pretty happy with it, does exactly what it says. I've noticed at least a 50% increase in speed (it was already fairly quick to begin with).
I wouldn't mind seeing more options as to what it does when you optomize it though. Also the ability to create multiple backups.

If you only need pipelining -- which I doubt to have security consequences and which incontestably speeds surfing -- simply get the Tweak Network Setting extension at http://www.bitstorm.org/extensions/ .
But, this prog even uninstalled the theme...
DO NOT USE THIS !!!!
rijp reviewed v0.3 on Mar 18, 2005
Mark, while I agree with the summary, the details are lacking. Pipelining does NOT affect the server. That's like saying increasing html threads on IE will bring the server to its knees, its not 3 or 5 or 10 separate browsers or IP addresses, its still 1 connection to the server, all it does is allow each picture or link to load simulataneous instead of waiting for each of them to finish. There is still a limited bandwidth PER computer, not browser. I could open 10 Firefox browsers, all with pipelining, I am still only able to download at 150/k s or whatever. 1 pipeline in 1 browser, or 10 pipelines on 10 browsers ALL share the SAME bandwidth, dude get your facts straight.
clifton reviewed v0.3 on Mar 18, 2005
This is a great program. This is much easier for the average user. Firefox is very slow until you make tweaks in the about:config. And it's easier to point people to this program rather then explain the configuration.
Mark Gillespie reviewed v0.2 on Mar 18, 2005
Enabled options like pipelining that are intentionally disabled, as they can bring web servers to their knees.
While it may speed up YOUR firefox browsing experience, it's also creating potentiall DoS attacks on web servers.
Avoid this, and all other Firefox tweakers for this reason...
ckjnigel reviewed v0.2 on Mar 18, 2005
Delete thos -- dangerous! You'll have to go back through all your browser options including items there's no justification for it having touched. Why did it clear the proxy setting???
All adblock filters were cleared, all Tab Browser Extension settings, my ForecastFox settings.
What sort of pea brain coded this POS?

True, it does load some pages a little faster, but it disables some of my firefox extensions and it seems like the browser's menus laggs a little. It needs more work.
Chikushou reviewed v0.2 on Mar 17, 2005
Seems to do what it claims to do. I'd like to see exactly what it's doing, though. Curiosity and all.
tom3311 reviewed v0.2 on Mar 17, 2005
Ran the program...did a config backup...and optimized Firefox to "fast pc/fast internet" and did notice a marked speed improvement. Simple, but does a good job at what it says it will do! Tom L

Good concept and seems to work, but it'd be nice to be able to select which tweaks to apply and which not to.
dougau reviewed v0.2 on Mar 17, 2005
This actually seems to work as advertised, there is a option for backing up your original configuration incase something doesn’t work out and the included readme file has a list of changes the program will make to your Firefox configuration over all Firefox seemed more snappy and faster after running this tool.
