I use Firebird daily in a work enviroment and I don't know what you mean by no GUI for Firebird? Have you not heard of Database Workbench? I challenge anyone to try DW for a week and come back to me and say they miss access's UI. Access sucks. If you use Firebird in a professional enviroment get DW. This is not ba plug, I don't really, really care if you take my advice or not. But take my word for it, I've tried a lot of other tools such as SQL Explorer etc etc and there's no contest. Post and tell me I'm right, oh wait, I already know I'm right :)

More user friendly apps, sure. Databases are no apps, they provide the means to manage data.
Database software focuses on different aspects than "other" software. Of course they require interfaces, but it would be a waste of space and development time to create a visual wrapper around it. What's more: MS Access and Sql Server do provide you with the means to view your database model through a build-in GUI, but what if you'd prefer a completely different one?
In short: databases are NOT about interfaces, and should never be. No matter what century...

Let's put it like this: if MySQL would try its very best, it might be mistaken for Firebird's little brother. MySQL is OK for simple tasks, and could by now even be used in several professional software systems. Things used to be way different, when very basic stuff like subselects simply weren't supported. You might say MySQL recently matured. Firebird, on the other hand, supports not only the basic stuff, but lots and lots (and lots) more. The big difference is that MySQL got hyped big time (which makes sense, since it's quite solid software, and in most cases free of charge).
Don't get me wrong, I kinda like MySQL. It just can't compare to Firebird.

Vista users beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This prog's .cpl applet will cause your Control Panel to crash(Windows Explorer too): you won't be able to access any part of it(unless you browse to System32 folder and click the individual applets, or have previously created shortcuts for them say, on your desktop or QuickLaunch bar...).
Solution: browse to your Win\Sys32 folder and rename its .cpl extension(or just outright delete it all) of the Firebird.cpl applet(say, to .xxx).

This is a quite powerful and capable multiplatform database, which is also free and open sourced.
It is funny to see which criteria you used to rate this product with 2/5 - lack of bundled GUI manager?!
There are actually plenty of them (freeware, shareware and commercial) together with ODBC, JDBC and ADO.NET drivers, PHP managers and various utilities. Majority of them that I tried are quality and mature products.
Comparing MS Access and Firebird is simply ridiculous, and for costs of a basic, single SQL Server licence (5 simultaneous users) you can easily purchase all available commercial software for Firebird on the market.
Please, all the people that are underating Firebird SQL server here, because of name dispute with Mozilla browser, stop doing that!

i'm sure this is really useful and well done - but for the "average" person used to access, filemaker pro, sql server etc it's probalby going to seem awful. There's no gui interface so everything is done by writing sql code (tedious) - you can use 3rd party front ends, but really... this is the 21st century... shouldn't we be aiming for more user-friendly apps?

IMHO is different "Mozilla Firebird", than "Firebird", the second standalone.
It's a great database, with the improvements Borland has not been able to do to Interbase, and even more, free and open source.
