Publisher's Description

FlashGet is specifically designed to address two of the biggest problems when downloading files: Speed and management of downloaded files. If you've ever waited forever for your files to download from a slow connection, or been cut off mid-way through a download or just can't keep track of your ever-growing downloads then it is for you. It can split downloaded files into sections, downloading each section simultaneously, for an increase in downloading speed from 100% to 500%. This, coupled with its powerful and easy-to-use management features, helps you take control of your downloads like never before.

I have to agree that this software is bad news. DO NOT install it or even run the installer, it is riddled with spyware and other junk.

I trusted this piece of SH#%$#$#%$ and, accidentally, found a lot of traffic generated by this program. Initially, I think was the "Bit torrent" network, I disable all of them, restarted program, and same behavior, a lot of connections. I checked just one IP: China. No men, this is bad. I don't know how antivirus software doesn't mark this piece of SH&%%$%$^!!

Mike74

Mike74 reviewed v2.4.0 Beta 4 on Feb 23, 2008

The older version I was using for a long time. Then I saw FlashGet 2.0 Beta 4 and 5. I tried Beta 5 and the Chinese installation wasn't too convincing but I didn't mind.

Then after reading these reviews I was thinking "Yeah right, spyware in FlashGet please". I opened it up and I saw tons of ads in the window, and a popup right after install too.

The ads advertise spyware. So once you click on them your infected. I'd advice to do what other users say and go to olderversion.com and get 1.8. I used 1.96 just fine no problems.

Although 2.0 Beta 5 has a nice UI it's all in Chinese and it differently installs spyware!!

Unfortunaly, this product has been going backwards since after ver 1.73.128....
I hope they fix the problems they have introduced by trying to make it into a "swiss army knife", ie a do everything downloader....
ie also a BitTorrrent & eMule client....
And since ver 1.73.128 they dont even have a Help file......
And their support forum is hopeless if you dont communicate in chinese....

maki~kun

maki~kun reviewed v1.9.6 on Nov 10, 2007

this is the best so far in the d/l manager category! easily can get up to 200 kbps for direct download, and torrent up sometime up to 100 kbps (avg 40-60). this is beyond other torrent apps which 20-40kbps something is a normal.
but...
something wrong with "call home" networking. i check with my outpost firewall's network, it seem this software transfer data back what we have downloading to "mothership" :D even when i'm not in d/l something @ idle situation. the ip is starting with 202.... something which i bet its in china. when this s/ware do this, it start hogging a bit my cpu. so everytime i finish d/l something, i turn it off imediately.

btw, i only used this software for a year now (with my 1st version is 1.92), so far i don't have any problem with 'security breach' in my pc protection. it don't have adware, or transfer spyware or virus into my pc itself.

Point Zero

Point Zero reviewed v1.9.6 on Sep 28, 2007

Uh Oh.... Again !
Just open your firewall log and see flashget do all kind of ""communication"" while you're not browsing at....

EDIT: Right from the Flashget "forum"....

The spying has nothing to do with the "Recommends" spyware at all.

Even if you close the Recommends window, the spying activity continues.
I've been sniffing a bit of traffic while Flashget 1.96.1073 was only loaded, but had nothing to do,

well, besides transferring some info about your modem/router/NAT address to some grey Russian and Chinese spam sites, I was also able to see it transfer my Login Name + Password for Rapidshare.com (UNENCRYPTED, just plain .txt format !!!!!) to some illuster Chinese ISP site, so there you have it !

The author of this program has been known to steal from people and spy on them since the very beginning, and as it seems it's in his genes, ..... nothing changed.

I can only advise you to keep as far away from Russian/Chinese software as possible, since they're practically all stealing bas****s. Too bad for the few good men....

I've actually become quite disillusioned with the newer versions of FlashGet now. At one point I believed it was the absolute best download manager out there, having tried most of the rest - NetAnts, ReGet, GetRight etc. Now, it's starting to turn into crapware. We don't want it to support BitTorrent, we have uTorrent for that. We don't want it to support eMule, we have eMule with a million different mods and optimizations for that. This program appears to have lost focus completely. In addition, it simply doesn't seem to be hooking into IE properly these days. The automatic update system never works - even when there's a new version out there you're either not informed of it or else it tells you the wrong version number. This is definitely a case of old version way outshines new version. I went back to the less-bloated, better-integrated v1.81 and would advise others to do the same. You can get the older version from oldversion.com.

That's why I give it a 4.

Point Zero

Point Zero reviewed v1.9.4 on Sep 13, 2007

Well well well, after having tested some P2P tools extensively, I can gladly conclude that this programs get 100kB/s easily while the other well-known crappy tools get 20k at most, and this tool doesn't need any fiddling with port-forwarding or reconfigurating modems and other crap at all. Great tool !

use it for bittorrents as well with no problem either. i'm guessing ppl here might have probs with firewalls and/or routers.

will advice you not to install google search which is included. so this should probably be flagged adware.

What happened to this program ? It used to work very well, now it won't even connect half the time, the downloads won't finish sometimes, and I can't login to Rapidshare anymore, regardless of how I set it up.
USED to work fine.
Ditto on the uTorrent over this for d/l torrents.

In fact, I've quit using a d/l manager because of version 1.84 on up.

7MB dsl helps, though ;)

Been happily using flashget for years... and years.

All the problems with Bittorrent, eMule etc etc - doesn't bother me at all.

Flashget does everything I need.

I'm still using 1.73.

If I need BT I use µTorrent - it does a much better job than Flashget. So far I haven't seen a single compelling reason to upgrade Flashget - and lots of reasons to stick with something that works.

What's going on .... I looked at other download managers when I saw the many starts and restarts (Note: I only use 1 thread) and yet I find myself coming back to Flashget. For multiple protocols (minus eMule and BitTorrent -- why in the whole world did they put them in when there are many better ones), file detail interface, a small square to show percentage and download speeds etc, I think it is still better. But if this start-restart nonsense still continues I am thinking of 'downgrading' to v1.73 or another downloader.

The only improvement in the v1.8 series IMHO is that FlashGet finally takes in the new settings, including new file name renaming, when checking for updates.

MickyFoley

MickyFoley reviewed v1.8.6 on Jun 5, 2007

I'll stick with 1.73 ... why?

- I've got µTorrent, why in hell i need this in a downloadmanager?
- eMule in FlashGet? *wink* Stupid feature, isn't it? Does this feature got in use by anybody?
- Bugs over bugs over bugs. Did i say: Bugs over bugs? Ok, bugs could happen. I know this, doesn't matter if they get fixed in next proper version. But a next version of FlashGet is proper? No, not in one thing. The main bugs are included, and wouldn't get fixed. Why?

If i need such crap, i'll take shareaza.

Please, go back to roots, throw 1.8 to trash & start over with 1.73.

i don't know why some people are so down on this now - only annoyance I have with this version is with the BHO - Windows Defender is fairly regularly 'detecting changes' and asking for permission even if I've permitted the exact same thing five times before. I haven't rated it down as I don't know if it's their fault or not.

1. And again, upgrade from build 1003 to 1004 corrupted the database and i lost my previous settings.

2. Memory and CPU usage is about 10% higher than before.

3. STILL no fix for the connection more than limit bug.

4. Not sure if this happens on clean install but the search bar will replace the main buttons when close and restart FG.

Conclusion? Die monster, you don't belong in this world. Never again will i upgrade to the next version.

Tried Orbit Downloader but i have problems getting it to work with Opera since i need a download all function. Went back to FG v1.73 build 128 and will stick to it for now.

Unfortunately, beautiful interface won't increase your download speed and comfort.

When upgrading from v1.73 to 1.8, i had to delete the default.jcd file because it wasn't compatible with the new version and caused it to be corrupted. Now when i upgrade from build 1001 to 1002, i still need to delete the file? This is just plain ridiculous. And not to mention all my previous settings were lost.

They still haven't fixed the connection more than limit bug. Batch download still can't see the complete url. Some captions have unknown characters. The new drop zone must have a bright colored background or else you can't see the completion percentage.

Instead of adding new features each time, they should have focussed on fixing problems first.

I liked the new interface and the new build. I have not seen any freeze or system slowdown I saw at the previous versions.

Unfortunately there are still some issues that have been waiting to be resolved for years!
1- The main download list can not be sorted anyway. If you move them to a category folder, then they become sortable! Although I e-mailed the author many months ago, there has been no response or solution to date.
This problem can be seen unimportant, but to me, it's a necessity, because sometimes I need to sort the list by filesize (only if known!), or filename (to find duplicates) and this is a basic feature I think.

2- You can't get the filesize of the download without starting the download. That's crazy. FDM can do this by a shortcut.

3- Category order can not be changed anyway. The last created category is added to the end of the list. They can not be sorted too.

Although the features mentioned above are still missing, FlashGet is still the best download manager. It's Import-Export features are unmatched!

I'm still waiting for the next, Perfect version!

I've been experiencing downloads that suddenly jump back into almost half the percentage when it hits 100% for some reason...it's even more annoying when it's a 1.2 GB download. I tried openoffice and my max speed is 1.6m/s and I was getting about 300k I tried right away in utorrent and I was getting 1.5m/s. Also when you download a torrent it uses a huge amount of memory. With flashget downloading 1 torrent it was using just over 85meg and with utorrent downloading/uploading 38 torrents including the 1 that i tried in flashget it was only using 17-18meg. Other than that it's still the best download manager I've tried. I hope the developers will be removing the torrent stuff and streamline the program.

I've tried all download managers including shareware/freeware and still went back to Flashget in the end. Why? Because it uses the LEAST CPU & memory usage but able to get full speed easily.

There's no need to tweak for more splits, 10 is more than enough so i'd advise you not to set higher than that as you risk getting banned from the server.

Now that it's a freeware, i don't see a reason people would choose other download managers and especially pay for one. Although i don't remember there's an option to exclude the search bar during installation but you can remove it from the registry easily :

It lacks absolutely nothing - everything works, it never crashes, it doesn't use beaucoup system resources. FlashGet's only problem was that it was shareware. Now that it's free it's pretty much the absolute best of the bunch. You'll never need to look further than this program.

Stop already with the "spyware" comments. This program has "adware" -- fully disclosed as such, obviously, you see the adware banners at the top when you use it. As the OP noted, simply buying/registering will get rid of the nags. Now, you may notice delays in the program, due to the ADWARE -- so, if you like it, buy it.

I LOVE this program & have been using it for years. It has an auto-recognition facility -- you just click or hilite the download link you want and FlashGet will get it for you -- couldn't be simpler. Also, you can cut that file in up to 10 streams for super-fast downloading. [FlashGet unauthorized hacks can give you up to 100 simultaneous streams.]

It'll even d/l some trickier types of links, like where the download filename is "hidden" behind a "download.asp" or whatever link, like:

www.filesite/downloads/download001.asp

It does have some problems, which may have been addressed. One is that it has a bit of trouble recognizing updates of files you have downloaded before. It asks "do you want to download again" and if you answer yes, it'll download the file to the folder you d/l it before. That's a problem, like with an update which will probably have a different version number. So, here you have to answer "yes" then click cancel, then restart, and then click to maybe you new download folder. Tho this lack-of-function is a pretty minor, IMHO.

BTW -- if you cut the streams, you'll definitely notice a CPU drain. I'm on a cable modem so it doesn't really affect me much. D/l streams can DRAMATICALLY reduce download times, to a fraction of the original estimate.

One other weird thing about downloading FlashGet from it's homepage: it's s~l~o~w -- I have to d/l it with, yup, FlashGet -- using the proggie itself to download it! Go figure. This link is fast, tho -- from FileForum.

Why you guys not use ASDL ... normally you don't need really a downloadmanger again.
If you feel, that you need this software, take the freeware " http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/ " or NETANTS (now freeware too).
Care money for this idea OR give it as DONATION - according to fairware principle.
But please don't pay for it, this time is gone ;-)

eddieb961: spyware? what spyware?

this has been spyware free for who-knows-how-long.

FlashGet freeware version is ad supported and you see an ad bar.
You can pay for it though and it will get rid of the ad bar.

FlashGet is known to use Cydoor to deliver ads, which is what eXeem had as well. Of course this is the non-spyware type cydoor. Its just a single DLL file that downloads ads to a temp folder and shows them in FlashGet and FlashGet only.

blackhole8746: Yeah I know. Betanews/Fileforum really skimps on screenshots a lot of times. If you want GOOD, QUALITY screenshots you should view the ones SoftPedia takes of the programs. FileForum/Betanews uses the stock images available at the home site, which for the most part are small, and are as the one you see above for FlashGet. SoftPedia installs all programs and takes full size screenshots in windows. On a side note, that looks more like Win2k, as opposed to Win98.

My opinion is that WG is a really clone of flashget 1.65 in the good sense : All FG features are in WG too and some more (preview media while downloading them) the only feature that is different is that FG allows you to browse ftp AND http links in its browser but WG only allows to browse ftp links in its browser. As good as reget, 'cause both are spyware.

They used Browser Helper Object : (BHO). A component that Internet Explorer will load whenever it starts, shares IE's memory context, can perform any action on the available windows and modules. A BHO can detect events, create windows to display additional information on a viewed page, monitor messages and actions. Microsoft calls it "a spy we send to infiltrate the browser's land." BHOs are not stopped by personal firewalls, because they are seen by the firewall as your browser itself. Some exploits of this technology search all pages you view in IE and replace banner advertisements with other ads. Some monitor and report on your actions. Some change your home page.

I've been using it since version 1 and I *have* had some issues with corrupted downloads, especially anything that's larger than 50MB.
In particular 3DMark03, XP Service Pack 2, and several large game patches/packs come to mind as having been error-ridden when downloaded via FlashGet. Installation for such programs will work fine, however certain files are corrupted and cause said programs to bomb. Re-downloading them with GetRight or the default MSIE downloader fixes everything. While I dismissed it as being something else, when I get the SAME problems and fixes on another machine I can't help but blame FlashGet.

I love the interface and speed (and integration) however it comes at a price!

It's never crashed, it's never corrupted a download (even after resuming). The only thing I don't like is that you cannot remove that download graph from the toolbar - the way around it is to set the graph colour to black, the same as the box, so even though it will still be there, you cannot see it doing anything because it is all the one colour. I've even grown used to the voices that say (assuming you've enabled the option), 'job added', 'job finished', 'all done', 'error'!

Net Transport already supports MMS, but does not support mirrors automatically.

GimieGimieGimie

GimieGimieGimie reviewed v1.3 on May 28, 2002

I agree bobad, in my opinion the product is far from the bloated stage at the moment, infact it's got smaller in size since the removal of advertisements back on v1.1 a month ago. But in some aspects your correct, the author should not lose grasp, and keep a winning formular, exactly the way it is. Flashget is amazing at it's job, and i don't see many ways that the author can improve it does it's job so well ;). Never the less, authors are always compelled to updaing their product, so continue to expect more and more releases of the fab flashget!. The area i believe that Flashget needs most work in, is getting to the links of Getrights ability to grab any download link out there, Flashget is getting poorer and poorer at this as technology and standards move forward and flashget doesn't. I haven't seen an update to this part of the program since 0.92 or something. By now i would have expected an option for Flashget to intergrate into "Netcaptor" and other IE related clone browser, and finally intergrating the Mozilla/Netscape plug-in into the program it's self for that more "complete" feel. That will take flashget into the future alittle bit more i think ;). With the new icons and such, flashget looks less and less more serious of a product, less productive, thus it seems it can crash more then it's predocessors, but this is just a feeling, and is far from the truth. On another note, "moonknightus", i don't understand some of your comment, quote: "Though recent versions have turned to Adware (it used to be simple freeware)" /quote. What do you mean exactly? I think you got mixed up abit there, it's actually the opposite :P, Flashget due to changing to a more dangerous and demanding spyware "cydoor" in v1.1, and getting 100's of negitive reviews, actually decided to remove spyware all together with the arrival of v1.2. Thus it's no "Shareware" instead of "Adware" which Flashget has been since at least the year 2000, when i first downloaded and installed Jetcar/Flashget v0.85. And is a welcomed change, but i'm 50:50 on it for the public, since i finally decided to buy the product, where's others will have to buy the product after 14 days i believe, where before, with ads, could keep it for as long as they liked. Hehe, another thing, i've noticed that download links in betanews.com are now "Throwing" them selves into my flashget, they changed their protocals from the looks of it for download managers to grab them from the looks of it. Fantastic betanews if that's the case! Very welcomed and saves me tons of time! I wonder why they changed it ;)

romualdrichard, i believe betanews/file forum does this on purpose to stop leeching as part of a anti-leech program. They continuly make it harder and harder as time goes by for user's to grab and download the url's via a download manager. Betanews/fileforum has already changed their method of storing files twice and i've clocked them and got around it twice too :). Maybe it's just my imagination but that's my 2 cents, it's not flashget's fault, but i do know how to get flashget to grab the download link and download the files for you, it's very easy indeed, granted, not the best way and takes a little more time then it should, but we can thank fileforum for that one can't we? :). I won't post the method here, simply because if i am correct, fileforum will take note and yet again, change their methods to make it impossible to download their files via a download manager. My e-mail is GimieGimieGimie@hotmail.com. Drop me a line, and i'll give you what you need :). I gave this program a 4 simply because it supports spyware. Thankfully previous versions of this software still worked perfectly if you used a program liked Ad-Aware to remove the known spyware files from your computer.
I hope this version is the same. It is one of the easiest to configure and quickest download managers I've seen.

Really this it is the best and with a lot of difference, nobody overcomes it in anything, the other ones have more than enough. He/she notices 100
Quick, agile, it never begins, he/she doesn't give any problem type. Their programmer really knows ago that.

I have tried GetRight, DAP (Download Accelerator Plus), GoZ!lla, etc. and I think this program rocks the world. It has a simple advertisement banner in the main window and is very fast and efficient. An important fact is that this application has NEVER crashed on my machine. I recommend this to anyone who likes good software.

This program, compares to GetRight and other download management programs, is the best.
These programs all contains Spyware... since when we aren't able to remove them? Hint:Ad-aware ;-)

So, without Spyware, this is the best! Plus it supports many languages =)
Get it!!

This program is the best download manager I've used so far. The "download all by flashget" function is the one I use most often. I also use this program to download big files. Flashget has excellent options which are easy to configure. And the spyware is no problem because you can remove it easily with ad-aware. My points 5.

Best D/L manager I tried (once removed the ads ;-). The best feature is "Download all by flashget" with the filtering options. Grab dozens of files from a page at once!

"compatible with MSN messenger"?! this IS MSN!
Jesus! People have no shame.
I'm waiting for "ErieX Windows", which is, of course, "Compatible with Windows".

I have tried several download managers, and Flashget is by far the best. The configuration has many options. If there's something you don't like about it, just change it! Oh, and the spyware is no problem. ;-)

I cannot say if DAP is faster in downloading, but DAP takes forever and all the CPU power when assembling the files at the end.
