That is a extremely usable, light and stable desktop environment, easy to understand, reasonably powerful and rich of features for anyone.
Even OSX and W7 has still something to learn from Gnome's usability - I'm not talking about KDE 4 because it is no longer a desktop environment, it is just a sad joke.

There is no clear changelog for this release but a roadmap and little of a an explanation is available here.

Looking Forward to GNOME 2.22 - Here you will find a little about the next important release. I find personally sweet that the interface will be more CONSOLIDATED as there are too many applets and tabs to mess around with. Yes, its a mess.

I have an extra computer running Ubuntu 7.04. Ubuntu comes with Gnome.

I am a Windows user, because I play games. Linux is a little weird when it comes to that.

So I wanted KDE because it looks more clean and you know... bla bla.

I found KDE somewhat annoying to setup, so I kinda ditched the idea again. Once Gnome is running its rock stable.

I have used both KDE and GNOME under Ubuntu.

All I can say is, KDE is for people who are used to Windows. Probably it is best for those who just converted from Windows. KDE's level of customization is amazing. People who wants to tweak it to their hearts' out, they should use KDE.

On the other hand, GNOME is for people who want clean look. It's simple and this makes it easy to use. Mac-lovers would love it. I also love it even though I always use Windows (sorry!).

I am looking forward to KDE 4 and GNOME 2.20. Let us see how it will compare with each other

i use ubuntu and fedora and i must say that GNOME is the best way for ME (maybe not for someone else) to handle linux.
its easy to use and very simple. also i think that KDE looks a bit like "windows for kids". its more childish. GNOME is - i think - more professional and its very "clean". i love the design and the way it works. maybe there are more possibilities in KDE but i dont really use them, so theres no reason for me to use KDE.
also it uses less memory on my pc than KDE.

sorry for my bad english :)

And give me a break, yes I use Windows, never paid

There is nothing better than Windows XP. Well, in fact there is... it´s called Windows Vista!!!

- Actually I would consider Windows XP better than vista as you need at least 1GB RAM, 128mb Graphics card and 15GB of harddrive space to run Vista and its costs more.

I can't wait for Gnome 2.20, I think KDE is too feature packed and it is overkill for most people. Gnome is simple, fast, intuitive and logical.

Gnome is far superior to the clunky KDE 3.5.x

Gnome is fast, responsive and doesnt crash as often as KDE in my experience. KDE is for MS Windows closet-cases who pretend to like linux but secretly yearn for Redmond's OS. KDE is too much of a compromise. Gnome is prettier too, none of the crud and junk from KDE.

Newbie users may feel safer with KDE but once their training wheels come off Gnome (or possibly Xfce) is the way to go.

KDE is still better, and to the person who said KDE noticeably slower on the same system than Gnome under any distro--Have you tried every distro? I don't think so, so you can't rightfully say that. GNOME is becoming Mono (.Net) dependent. That alone is reason not to use it. The current version of KDE blows GNOME out of the water in terms of usability & features. When KDE 4.0 is released, it will be even better while GNOME continues to stagnate.

@sjc-- I know very well what kubuntu is. You've tried KDE & GNOME on ONE distro. Big deal. Means nothing.

@brusco -- You must be an ubuntu fanboy, they always resort to calling people childish names when someone says something they don't like.

You say GNOME is prettier, none of the crud & junk from KDE. That's a classic statement from an ubuntu fanboy. KDE varies from distro to distro, and can be customized like GNOME.

I stand by what I wrote 100%. GNOME is becoming more & more mono/.net dependent everyday, so it's closer to MS than KDE is.

ds0934 reviewed v2.16.0 Beta 2 on Aug 10, 2006

They need a cohesive GUI. GNKDE maybe? Tired of Linux forking itself to death while crappy Windoze sits back and makes jokes about it. Gnome is nice, as is KDE, but my complaints about both are that KDE is too much and Gnome isn't enough. Seems to be no closing that gap at this point either. Too bad.

eclipsingdivinity

eclipsingdivinity reviewed v2.16.0 Beta 2 on Aug 10, 2006

Excellent frontend to Linux. I use it mainly for speed, but combining Gnome with the ease and popularity of Ubuntu and i'm able to get a great looking/working desktop with ease (in Linux sense). I have used KDE and liked all the 'little' things about it. All the programs KDE have under its wing are actually excellent and it makes me mad that Gnome doesn't grab more developers to create various Gnome-friendly applications.

But if you don't want the eye-candy and clutter of KDE that tends to be a little slow with PCs, Gnome is a speed demon you want.

AlanS2001

ds0934

ds0934 reviewed v2.14.0 Release Candidate on Mar 2, 2006

Not bad, but really wish Gnome would close the gap in feature options with KDE. Just little things like customizing the desktop via right-click options, stuff like that. Nothing major. As for being user-friendly, esp for people trying to make the jump from Windows, Gnome is the easier/friendlier way to go. It just restricts things too much compared to KDE, at this point anyway. I always like to try out the updates however.

marty

marty reviewed v2.13.90 on Feb 2, 2006

I give it a 5 on basic principles. Linux is so far superior to Windows (and I WP XP x64 beta) than theres no need to beat a dead horse. More user friendly apps and if you want Windoze apps - use Wine. I have to prefer KDE - since I prefer not to tweak the Gnome desktop - but hey I boot into KDE, GNOME, Xfce etc. Get a life Windows fans (Vista will have a rootkit remover - maybe). Linux has had it for several months at least. I triple boot with Fedora Core 4 using RAID 1 (three WD hd's so I have a spare), Win 2K (the best that M$ ever offered) and WinXP x64. I know many have bought shareware for Windows - that's what 2K is for. Wake up people

I've been using Windows for,like,10+ years but recently I switched to Linux(Ubuntu+KDE) and I never regret it.Yeah, there are a lot to learn but it's worth it.

OK back to Gnome,it's good that there is a new version out there.Never try it though but I will.

I'm using KDE and I like it because it's more comfortable to me since I used Windows before(yeah,I'm a nOOb).I used Gnome before(Ubuntu use Gnome as default) but I prefer KDE more than Gnome.

After some time testing both KDE and Gnome on Linux, i have recently been impressed enough with the latest Gnome to actually switch from Windows permanently. I have to admit that I am impressed with the quality of both gnome and kde, but there remain things about both that I dislike. KDE has better file dialogs (open / save). Some distributions i have used have replaced the defaults open/save in Gnome, and i think new Open/Save dialogs would contribute much to usability. Also, I don't much like the default theme, but fortunately this is easily fixed. The speed of the file browser could still use some improvement, but overall, i find GTK apps more resposive than their QT equivelents. This version of Gnome is excellent, and very high quality. I recommend that you try it.

Gnome is clean, reliable and snappy. With its GTK themes that render it so crisp and clean looking, how can you not love this desktop environment.

The only problematic area behind Gnome is the lack of support it has. Many seem to be hacking KDE. With more support behind it and more programs available for it, Gnome could be incredible, now its just great.

And I have to say I found the 2.6 series very nice, in terms of everything, even speed (I remember the 1.2/1.4 series when Gnome was so sloooow that tea could be prepared between window openings :))

So I have to say good job to the Gnome dev. team, this time it really begins to show that they know what they are doing.

Well, I still will stay with KDE for a while, mainly because of my habits. Still, 5*.

espectro reviewed v2.0 Beta on Feb 22, 2002

Most of gnome 2 new features have been in kde since qt2 appeared. yes, faster than kde, but all that time you save when loading up software gets lost when you need to compile something in gnome (because of all the dependencies crap) yes i know about red carpet , debian etc but this is a workaround for crappy development. Gnome needs a stabilized development process. Oh please implement a default terminal with multiple tabs like multi gnome terminal

Latz

Latz reviewed v2.0 Beta on Feb 22, 2002

KDE is slow like hell, Gnome is convenient. Gnome is usable on my old 100 MHz machine, KDE isn't able to start any application in a reasonably amount of time (even xterm did never show up before I was frustrated and hit Ctrl-Backspace).

espectro

espectro reviewed vDeveloper Platform Beta on Dec 16, 2001

gnome is good, but kde is better
gnome has too many dependencies, corba, orbit, bonobo, oef, gtkhtml, gtk, libxml, gal, etc...

kde practically just requires the kde libs and qt, better features, easier portability. I still dont know why gnome-terminal cannot open multiple instances in tabs, like konsole can.
