I don't have a problem with toolbars themselves. Most of them anyways. Yes some of them are just adware/spyware junk.

My problem with them is that companies, like Google, install them automatically or if not automatically set to install by default.

They slow down the browser and I am sick of removing them all the time. Thankfully it has gotten a lot easier these days to remove them.

Thank God they are banned in Chrome. Now if only IE and FF would ban them too.

So let me get this straight:

I should install and run a toolbar that phones home continuously, allows tracking of my whereabouts and search criteria for ad purposes to be sold to the highest bidder, is a SERIOUS privacy violation from a company with the worst privacy record imaginable and in general is just a candy-coated piece of malware?

Right.

And the worst part is that so many users are running (not walking) down the "Too Stupid To Live" road to install and run it.

It's a pity there is no negative rating.

Avoid anything and everything form this company. As a security analyst, I can only way that their practices are despicable.

still using googlebar over this. similar features, hidable via button click, and the youtube and other extra searches are worthless in google's toolbar. the advanced buttons search inside the tiny search box and not the websites? wtf? if i want to search youtube, i dont want the results popping down in a 400x400 pixel box, i want them in the browser's page. maybe i missed a setting somewhere but searching with the non-standard google buttons is more annoying than going to the individual websites.

using googlebar for google searches and some advanced searches and built-in firefox search box for wikipedia, imdb, torrent sites, espn, youtube,

Genius toolbar. I love to be able "send to" a webpage in gmail; very useful feature. I'm bummed that they seem to have removed "word find" from the latest Firefox version. Not sure why they would do that. It's incredibly useful for finding searched for terms on an individual page. Of course, you could just have it highlight those words if you wanted. Personally, I just drag the icons and feature I like onto my usual Firefox toolbar and close the Google bar itself. I know you might be skeptical because so many companies put out bogus toolbars, but give it a try before you form your opinion.

@ bellgamin
Did anyone ask you? You have a perfect right to detest toolbars. However your comments are utterly useless partly because of you rather excessive detestation and partly because you fail completely to REVIEW the toolbar for what it is.

Personally I find this toolbar extremely useful - it enables me to make different types of searches with ease, gives excellent previews of my gmail and gcal and more.
Furthermore it has never installed itself without my going to the effort of installing (and updating) it and despite Daddy_Spank's hysterical comments it is a very small download, and comes bundled with nothing. I don't know where these reviewer's get their uninformed ideas from. (It is true that it is offered when installing other software).

I agree with the gist of most positive reviews:

Google Toolbar is a 'must' install for any system... and this latest update a 'must' get.

If anything, the toolbar may now have too many features-- some get 'hidden' under the >>, so I'd like to see more and plenty of customizability for individual users- esp. the drag & drop kind.

bobad

I use software to prevent toolbars such as this one from infecting my system. Too bad anti-spyware software doesn't detect it, probably because it's Google. This piece of junk is ubiquitous. For example, it's hard to even install hardware drivers these days without accidentally installing Google Toolbar. I rate it a 2 for usefulness (my browser does everything it does) and downgrade it 1 for it trying to force its way into my system by being everywhere.

Obviously elliott_nally is reviewing something he's not actually installing or using. It's silly to say that browsers already do whatever this toolbar can. Ok, so mail a page to gmail from your browser. Or find the next occurrence of a search term in the page you're viewing. Or highlight the search terms you used in a page. The list goes on. If you have something intelligent to say, please say it. Otherwise don't waste people's time. Personally I find this toolbar is a must install. Very useful especially for gmail users. You can email a page or selection of a page to your gmail. This is most useful, since Firefox lacks this feature and IE only integrates with nonweb based email clients like Outlook (I believe). Also, love the ability to search for the next occurrence of a search term. Personally I pull all the buttons I like out of the toolbar and disable the bar itself. This is likely easier in Firefox than IE.

To wincement: the ff search bar is for me one of the main reasons to use ff. I've even made a couple search plugins myself.

To amweiss157: what I do is a bit different, because I really like the extra functionality of the google search bar when using google to search. So I've managed to condense the google search bar and tuck it over the ff so that I can use the first one when googling and the other for all the other searches. It was a pain to configure and it just doesn't look right, but it'll do until they merge the functionality of the search bars, ot something better comes along. Hence the rating of only 4 out 5 from me.

Love this toolbar! For those who have not figured it out yet:
1) Enable the bar
2) Drag the buttons you want off the bar and onto the standard toolbars (or side bars if you have them)
3) Hide the google toolbar
4) Be happy that you now have the default FF search box with all the google buttons you can dream of

I finally left del.icio.us and shadows now that I have online bookmarks with an easy to use extension for quick access!

Google has considerable resources that it has decided to dedicate to the development of new and useful tools, and what do they encourage? I think anyone, two years ago, would have thought that by now Google would have produced some pretty innovative and high-quality software. Instead, it's been an ocean of mediocrity. Bummer.

I like the toolbar. The bookmarks menu rocks and custom buttons are quite nice. If you're a Googler (i.e. Gmail user, Calendar user, etc.) this thing is a must.

Development is going forward very slowly though. One small step after another. You'd think with Googles manpower and all the smart people there they'd code the ultimate toolbar during the lunchbrake. Probably there are only one or two people working on it.

Hurry up guys!

All in all that is three google products we have used, then removed, because of performance/changes to product.

"Who cares why there are minor updates with no explanation of what they are for,"

Because in general I like to know wtf is put/changed on my computer, at all times. At the least so that I can quickly glimpse at a list and see if it affected a feature I or the users I support. A change list is critical IMO for updating/upgrading software, and is fairly standard in the industry.

You are aware of the fact that google toolbar is the worst scamware, malware and spyware piece of shut ever? Apart from the fact that it reports back to google about your search behaviour, it also messes around with your system, changing for example the URLSearchHooks in the registry. I am using the AimAtSite search bar for IE, it's very comfortable. You can add any search engines, from any site, then simply write a keyword into the search field, select the site from the dropdown menu, and the browser immediately sends the request to the site. I am using it to search the MS knowledge database, google images, vcdquality movie releases, bittorrent releases on isohunt, subtitles for movies, bbc, cnn, reuters etc etc etc. It's not spyware plus it doesn't mess around with your system

Fortunately, there is a workaround by unregistering the file:

Works fine. It's funny watching my users use this thing, they use the google toolbar like the address bar in IE, they don't put in www.domain.com in the address bar.

I imagine this was quite intentional by the toolbar makers.

knocked down for a few things:
- google earth button shows up twice on some machines with google earth installed.
- List of fixes is outdated.

I am in complete shock. A great toolbar just got downgraded to an utter piece of usability crap. Horrible call to replace the combo with the new, and quite confusing dropdown. The thing doesnt even remember my search history correctly anymore. It's slowed down browsing on my machine to a crawl to boot. Removed the toolbar and I'm back to normal. I loathe the auto-updating feature. If I wanted to upgrade to this POS I would have done so willingly. Back to v3.0 for me. What a horrible call, Mountain View.

I've been using this version since it came into beta... and it kicks ass. It has a lot of features that are way better than the old version, and incredibly useful. Especially the simple little bookmark feature that can be accessed over any computer.
My only complain is that you can't get your own google toolbar history in the dropdown ... you can get your google-wide personlized search history, and even google-wide search "suggestions" which are handy in their own way, but i miss my own toolbar-only history...
but otherwise it's awesome.

Simple and Elegant, there isn't anything I dislike about this Toolbar, rather than the fact I don't use the features as much as I should. Besides, Firefox's search bar basically does what I need it to. Another quick gripe would be the fact that i'm impatient and like to quickly start searching right the minute my Firefox loads, but my text quickly jumps to the toolbar to my home page. Making it so I screw up on searching and causing me to spend an extra 3 seconds finishing what I had to type. THATS NOT EFFICIENT GOOGLE!! NOT EFFICIENT ENOUGH!!

The standards search box that comes with Firefox is all I need. I only wish I could resize it. But the Google toolbar is still quite handy, so I certainly won't give it a bad rating. But it only gets three stars since Firefox's default search tool already works wonders, and with tons of different search engines and database-driven websites.

Also, "unuseless" simply means "not useless" -- it does not mean "very useful" or even "useful" at all. Though you can let it imply what you want.

darthbeads

And i like the word translation feature(hover your mouse over any word in a page-- but first choose your language in the settings)-- ideal for both English & foreign language learners...

EDIT: I am also experiencing a script error w/ this toolbar(yes, i've long ago removed FF's native search bar & as well Googlebar extension). This script error may be exacerbated by an FF tabbed browser issue whereas clicking on some links causes a page to open invisibly(its in background consuming resources, but both it & its placeholder are not visible)-- the only way around this is to right-click open the link in new tab/window...this can be readily confirmed at say, Google News site: both newly-clicked windows & tabs disappear at random.
The script error generated by Google Toolbar comes up when opening new windows & when starting up FF.

Additionally, Google Toolbar should hide the buttons one disables in OPtions, not leave them grayed out on the toolbar, taking up unnecessary space.

Let's downgrade it to a 3 rating for now-- still very good for initial release-- & it must be tough as hell to create/test something for FF: taking into account the myriad independent extensions created: there can literally be millions of possible FF settings & extensions combination conditions to try & trace the cause of an error to-- maybe due to an extension on its own or in combination with groups of other extensions, all this further multiplied times all possible FF settings scenarios.

This is a great toolbar, very useful and clean. In the past a minor annoyance was that it keeps enabling Autolink every time I upgrade instead of keeping my disabled setting, stop trying to force this on me. Now there is no way to hide the Desktop Search advertisement on the bar, this is not a good trend.

In the past, Autolink enabling on upgrades was an annoyance, but I still rated it a 5. But with the addition of not being able to hide the Desktop Search ad button, I'm jumping to rating it a 3.

Don't force things on me, give me my options and I'll be a happier person.

*edit* I figured out how to get rid of the Desktop Search ad button, click on it and then choose No Thanks and it will be removed. I am bumping this up to a 4, because it is a unnecessary hoop and still want to see Autolink keep it's setting on upgrades.

Usually I would not rate software in comparison to something else, but in this case it is entirely appropriate. There was already an EXCELLENT toolbar (googlebar.mozdev.org) that is loaded with features, reasonably lightweight, solid, flexible, and easy to use. Google's toolbar has the advantage of nearly identical look-and-feel of the IE product, plus the two features missing from the unofficial toolbar (autofill, pagerank). Autofill can be added to Firefox through a separate extension, leaving pagerank as arguably the only advantage to the genuine deal. On the other side, the unofficial toolbar still has many optional buttons and features that aren't present in the Google product, and is smaller and faster to boot. So unless one needs pagerank, it leaves me wondering why I would select this over the unofficial version. My reason for rating this in relation to the other (which I would probably give 4.5) is that Google was aware of the unofficial version and in my view would have done well to improve upon that rather than coming in somewhere far less (other than pagerank) but with larger size and slightly more drag on the window opening speed. I'll keep an eye on this for future improvement. Maybe it'll grab me next time I try it.

While firefox has a couple googlebar-like extensions made by 3rd party developers, I would prefer getting this from google themselves - it integrates better.

danniboy, you as a maxthon forum moderator should know that it's not google's folks fault that it doesn't work with maxthon but maxthon developers' one. even latest version of GT works with previous versions of MyIE2 (previous name of maxthon) ... it means that if maxthon developers fix the bugs they introduced with new versions it will resume working with new maxthon too

They don't have it for FF, so you rate the one for IE at 1? Retard... There are three reasons everyone should rate this at a 5:

1. It's free.
2. It's Google search for crying out loud.
3. It's free.

The Autolink and Spell check are nice additions. I don't use Autolink all that much, but the spell check has already saved me a lot of time. Good stuff.

"AutoLink (US only) - Turn street addresses into links to online maps" - Maybe you should read 1. The EULA 2. the main screen that tells you what it is. This is a great toolbar, far better than say, yahoo and all the other toolbars. Btw,Firefox has it already installed, just for your info. I would recommend the toolbar to anybody who does a lot of searching.

I love Google. I tried the previous beta release, and thought it was great except for one change from the Google 2.0 tool bar which is really annoying. When you work from a daughter window that is less than full screen, you have no access to the "Search the Web" button (now a capital G) to the right of the address window. You have to maximize the daughter window before you can run a search, then restore it to default size.

I don't know if that's been done on purpose, or if it's just something that got broken. But I need to have at least the >> to the right of the Google address window so I can access the buttons and run a search without having to maximize the window. Has this been fixed in the new beta?

Will it be fixed?

Well this toolbar used to be a great tool - but now another concept are creeping in, and that is the new feature in Google beta 3: Autolinks. This is a tool which Google toolbar turns any "triggerwords" into links that don’t belong to the website you are looking at. In other words hyperlinks is not unlike Microsoft SmartTags, a venture that turned into a fiasco because the users turned against the idea. If you want to know more about Google toolbars Autolinks, here is a place to get a bit of the idea: http://www.betterbadnews.com/22 - so apart from all the good features in Google Toolbar, the Autolink hype makes me to give the toolbar only the lowest rating. That is until Google back off this Autolink idea!

The "Advanced Options" which give you more features but needs to submit data to Google to do this (PageRank etc) is completly optional and made clear in the installation. The "Advanced Options" also only submit anonymous and only the neccessary info. They can be turned off at anytime easily. Also this toolbar provides more functionality than any other out there available (MSN, Yahoo, A9 etc). It was also the first one to provide good functionality and not bloat marketing buttons. (Other search engines only recently added useful features to keep up with Google). I can give this no less than a 5.

How anyone can give this anything less than 4(and 4 is bad enough in itself!) is beyond me: maybe 'cause it won't vacuum & mop also? What about the new features? Translate, spell check, etc.
¿What else ya want, a taxi ride home too?
Let's see: let me give it a low rating because it doesn't have a bundled spyblocker, av, firewall, word processor, graphics manipulator(all for free, btw).....

If this gets a 2/3, what gets an above-average rating: A9, Yahoo, MSN????!!!!! Puleeze... ROTFLMFAO

¡And, Spyware, schmyware! Just turn off "anonymous usage stats"! ¿But then, how can the quality & relevancy of searches stay optimal if everyone disables contributing data to it? Keep mindful of what led to the fall of Communism: everyone wanted the largest handout WHILE contributing the least! Maybe Alexa would be better, ehh????

Thankfully most bosses aren't of a like demanding mindset,"You know-- you aín't such a hot employee: you're not able to keep all intruders out, you don't have pretty handwriting, you don't work for free,,,"

The definition of "spy" is to watch secretively. Google goes out of their way to inform users about the home-phoning behavior of the Google Toolbar. They put it in the privacy policy on the site, they mention it clearly when the software is installed, and they even warn the user every time an applicable advanced feature is enabled. So, Google Toolbar certainly does not qualify as "spyware". It isn't spying on you if warning after warning is shoved in your face, and if the behavior is not malicious. And none of the Google "spyware" whiners have established otherwise. So _SHUT UP ABOUT IT ALREADY!_

Works great and blocks popups but allows popups you click on to work WITHOUT you having to hold down another key such as shift/ctrl/a. Other free popup blockers are not so considerate, and dont come with the google search and other options. Defintly a "must have" for IE. And according to some spyware finders its NOT spyware either.

Just a note: You can go into HKCU\Software\Google\NavClient\1.1\Options and change KillPopupCount to read only to you and administrators (assuming current user is admin). Change the value to 0 and it will stop counting pop ups. Useful if you don't want people to make an inferences on how much time you're searching the web (specifically on certain sites that tend to have more popups that others). You can also make the same change to the history key to prevent it from storing your history information although you have to exit/restart IE to get it to clear.

A note about the auto-updating feature... It only does that in version 2.x. Version 1.x did not auto-update and still doesn't. Personally, I like to tell my software when to update, so as long as there is an option to turn this auto-update feature off, that's great. Either way, this is an incredible piece of software! Google is the best at any service it offers, it seems.

Great as always. Just want to mention, for those that haven't noticed, Google Toolbar auto-updates ITSELF so there is no need to install new versions all the time if you already have Google Toolbar. It doesn't even notify you that it's updating, but you can check your version by clicking the Google button -> Help -> About Google Toolbar. It usually has auto-updated itself for me before Betanews even catches wind of a new version :D

wtf styckx! Sorry for the foul language, but what you say doesn't make sense. Here's what I can do with Opera that you can't with IE: tabbed browsing, customize toolbars and menus ad infinitum, skin my browser, e-mail or post to newsgroups, open all

bar and lots more. Maybe you should try it once ;-) But
lets stay on topic for a sec: Though this toolbar has some basic functionality, it is in essence spyware (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,904096,00.asp) and it doesn't add anything to IE that you can find in Opera and Mozilla.

Hmmm... was previously using 2.0.88-big, uninstalled it, installed this version and it crashed after install was done. But, restarted my browser and the toolbar is working fine. Not sure what all that was about, but it's working like a charm so far! As in my previous reviews of Google Toolbar, this is a must-have addition to IE. For the pop-up blocker ALONE it is worth the very quick download, but you should find the other functions just as useful. The blogger function is very cool if you use Blogger, I only wish it worked for other blog services like Livejournal (which I use).

This is a good enhancement to IE. It's not a "spyware toolbar" as stated below, like a Xupiter thing or something like that. It survives your Ad-Aware scans because it's a legitimate search toolbar. :)

I enjoy the popup blocking immensely, although some other functions (like the blogger button) are fairly useless, but easily removed. It's not the miracle worker and it doesn't make IE into Moz Firebird or Opera. It does make searching easy and adds some other niceness. I'm all in favor.

Zulithe

Zulithe reviewed v2.0.88 Beta on Jul 24, 2003

Excellent toolbar, a must for any IE user that uses google (and who in this day and age doesn't use google!?) The popup blocker is EXCELLENT, I love it. I use Mozilla Firebird off and on, but IE is still my preferred browser. Now, maybe google can add some tabbed browsing functionality to IE and it will be perfect :)

I do LOVE the Google Toolbar, though I wish that they would create a version for Mozilla. The one for IE, though, is indispensible. It takes little space and almost no additional resources, makes it very easy to do a spur-of-the-moment search, and makes it easy to locate the search terms on the pages that have been returned. The fact that it searches ALL of the Google areas (web, groups, images, etc.) is particularly nice. I've had no trouble at all, and honestly I can't think of anything that it is lacking (OTHER THAN A MOZILLA VERSION, hint, hint....)

Doesn't work with Net Captor. Eeeeeh...no big deal. In Net Captor's address bar you can type "g" (for google) and then what you wish to search for. Example "g nero 5.5.9.0" brings up Google and all the hits on Nero. So I can do without it.

Very useful little program, and since (IMHO) google is the best search engine and it is my favorite one to search for things it is the perfect enhancement for the IE, Opera did include that function much earlier, well but I guess Microsoft needed a little help.
I don't see the spyware... all it does is it collects the URL's you visited, but not user-related, well of course it spies for your URL's, but oh well I think I can handle that.

nhavar

nhavar reviewed v1.1.53 on Feb 21, 2002

Perhaps those complaining about spyware neglected to read the part that said "READ THIS IT'S NOT THE USUAL YADA YADA YADA" In that document it states that information about the URL you are visiting is sent to PageRank for automatic ranking of pages and that you can choose to install without that option. It's not sending personal information per se, just url data and you can disable it.
Googles been like a best friend to me lately, anytime someone asks me something I don't know about I hit google and learn a little. This toolbar is a welcome edition to my browser.

One IE toolbar I can actually love - very useful for quick searches of Google & Google Groups (usenet archive). Plus, you can view an older, cached copy of almost any page with a click of a button. Check it out if you enjoy Google, which I think is simply the best search engine out there given it's endless index and page cacheing!
