Great free client. But i still prefer mIRC.
Yes you have to pay for mIRC but only once then its yours forever.

Not even close to mIRC? Are you kidding? Free and opensource vs 30 days of nag-screens until you have to pay? Hydra does everything I use IRC for, and even has some features I use that don't come with mIRC.

This is a really good client, but still doesn't even come close to mIRC.

Did tannman1 just mention pirch? Hey tannman1, 10 years ago called.. they want their IRC Client back.

Anyway, hydraIRC is alright but doesn't have anywhere near the experience/time tested-ness that mirc has. mirc has always been the #1 IRC client for Windows and I really don't see that changing any time soon.

Have to disagree...I've had both on my computer for a couple years and I rarely use mirc anymore. Can't live without the channel monitor.

This will probably never even come close to mIRC, but in terms of alternatives its great really.

The client offers a viable choice over Mirc or Pirch. However configuration may be difficult for new users and some features such as ability to send messages to room ops only should be included. This client deserves to be followed for newer builds

mIRC is still #1. However this IS a very nice effort.

Would need to offer something similar to aliases/remotes like mIRC before I'd jump the wagon. I looked pretty hard, but if I missed it somebody feel free to flame me.

Pretty much the only ICR client I've used in years. Still a little complicated to configure for newbies, but once you get used to it, it's pretty damn good.

The best IRC client out there...
But it could be updated more, but I'll still give it 5 stars! :D

This is the best, this much much more faster than mIRC and has many of good scripts already with it...
But I like GTSdll (a mIRC add-on), there should be a plugin or something what makes mIRC script add-on's work with HydraIRC :P

Wait a minute, you can chat on the internet with this thing? That my friends is revolutionary, this guy is a friggin genious. It appears to have cuaght on quickly becuase these chat rooms are reiddled with people talking about useless things just like HAM radio, CQ, CQ 11 meters, this DCW998, do you read, hello..., hello..., hello...,,,,,, "What R U Wearing?" I answer the blood of the last person that asked me that question.

Lots of new changes for the 0.3.095 release, some very cool now features!

The quit messages are not really spam like, and will be removed/configurable when the app gets out of beta and reaches 1.0, this information is in the FAQ already (see http://hydrairc.com/wakkawiki/FAQ). Most other IRC clients post their name in the user's quit message anyway (e.g. invision, nonamescript, etc) and at least the ones in HydraIRC are funny.

HydraIRC is a *very* usable IRC client these days, a breath of fresh air as one of my users put it.

Not bad for free, but room for lots of improvement. The interface is a real change from popular programs like mIRC and so might need some getting used to. The spamlike quit messages as the default is VERY annoying. I have seen several channels ban people simply for using HydraIRC because of some that and some of it's other lameaties. I know it's free but spamming channels is never cool, IRC has enough of that already. Overall, worth a look if you don't want to pay for mIRC, but for the time being, mIRC is still the greatest client on Windows

It's a nice irc client, the only gripe I have is that it has those annoying spamlike preset quit messages.

HydraIRC is quick to be updated, and has a lot of features that no other IRC Clients have. Though it lacks in some areas, they will probably soon be implemented or fixed. The creator has a wishlist from people about a mile long that he is trying to work on, as well as things he's putting into the client anyway. It may not be 'worth your time' now, because it lacks some features you want. But in time, it will be.

Great program, I will be following this for a while. It was so simple to use, plenty of useful features, and the interface was great. No more searching for endless Mirc scripts that aren't any good.

dedbob

dedbob reviewed v0.3.069 on May 27, 2003

great client with tons of potential, even so early on in development!

very stable - hydrairc runs for weeks at a time without crashing or taking up loads of resources.

customizable - movable toolbars, resizable and dockable windows.. auto-hide those windows you don't use often.

attractive - cohesive modern-looking icon set. not the mish-mash of tacky windows 3.1x graphics used in "that other" irc client.

command profiles - reliably connects to networks and servers of your choosing, joins your channels, authenticates.. the chore of getting to all your favorite places is gone!

channel monitor - keep an eye on what is going on in all the channels you're in, without having to switch back and forth between them.

the list goes on and on.. great client, and each release brings more new features.
keep it up hydra!

It contains that so that people can see how to effectively configure some of the more advanced features of the client.

Also, some of the reviews below were complaining about features that have now been implemented in the client.

Give it a try, installation (and removal) is really easy!

Author leaves personal info such as friends and bots in the public client. Therefore I give it a 1 until it is removed from distrobution.

dirtyrapist

dirtyrapist reviewed v0.3.059 on Mar 23, 2003

This is not quite mIRC. But then again mIRC has been raped by scripters to connect to msn chat rooms and this software doesn't allow that. i like it because it has been optimized with the newest compliling eqiupment, has a nice interface, and is written in C++. Mabie a spy-blocker feature should be added where no - one can see the user's name address or anything when you enter a server or get pinged. Hopefully the developer coes with a 1.0 version with all features enabled and no 'this isnt implenmented'. Great. Sorta like a Saddam being buttraped as far as color choices go but great.

Zulithe

Zulithe reviewed v0.348 Beta on Feb 19, 2003

I still prefer mIRC, but I like trying other clients once in a while. HydraIRC has a lot of potential, being free and also fastly developed, it may become the dominant choice for a windows IRC client in the near future. If you're curious, try this beta, else stick with mIRC for now.

c_g_hills

c_g_hills reviewed v0.348 Beta on Feb 17, 2003

This program is better than all the Windows IRC clients around at the moment, even if it is not finished. The interface is very simple to navigate and use, and speedy also. You can change all the internal parameters of the program, either using the simple config page or through the xml configuration file. It currently has support for color, command and irc themes (*** You have been kicked by NICK can become *** NICK kicked you, or whatever you like). The more people who use it while it's beta, the faster all the bugs are ironed out, and more features implemented. WTG Hydra :)

Looks nice and fairly stable. Needs a ot of work still. For instance commands need to be added (i.e. oper etc.)

devi1

devi1 reviewed v0.336 Beta on Jan 14, 2003

Not bad, pretty stable, it's not done yet though, it should have a help file, it should have more options that any other standard irc client has like /list. All in all, i don't suggest you download this until newer versions come out.
