Publisher's Description

ICQ is a program that lets you find your friends and associates online in real time. You can create a Contact List containing only people you want to have there, you can send them messages, chat with them, send files, configure ICQ to work with external applications and more.

ICQ Lite is pure messaging: It includes only the most popular features of ICQ, such as instant messaging, file transfer, SMS and meeting people, for super-quick communication. Because it's so small and has everything good about the full-featured ICQ made easy, it's the perfect version to send to your friends and get them on ICQ. It is a new experimental version of the ICQ software and is still under development, may be unstable and is likely to contain bugs. Contains no advertising. Now you can add AIM and AOL users (screen names) to your contact list and chat with them like with any other ICQ user. Searching for AOL or AIM users is not yet available, but you can post your ICQ number so AOL or AIM users can add you, and to get screen names of new AOL and AIM friends to add to your Contact List.

This is not the ICQ Web-based client that has been renamed to ICQ2Go!

I dont like MSN Messenger but ICQ can be better. But I dont think its so bad that it gets a "1".

Need to be improved

I. for SMS
1. It cannot send to Indonesian Mobile example +628128081XXX and other number too
2. There is no character counter.
3. add special character keypad, example the enter (to change to next line)
and others

II. Voice chat if we behind a router using local IP, is not working. meanwhile using YM working.
III. Resources used by ICQ need to be reduced
IV. It need better spam control, and also make user easier to blok spammer, etc.
ICQ also better creating a forum to collect all suggestions from beta tester, and also look at discussion forum in various beta site.

This is the most reliable IM program on the market. It does not have the option of connecting with other programs to IM, like Trillium, and MSN 2 , etc. which is great. I am not sure who has the use for more than one IM program to talk to friends.

Secondly, for the MSN Messenger users , if I wanted an individual email program for offline users I would download an email software. MSN needs to seperate Hotmail and MSN Messenger and give it an offline send feature.

ICQ has always and will always be the best IM Program.

*Privacy & security bug that enabled the exposure of the user's IP address to anyone without the knowledge of the user.

It is sad that we are now force to look for the Lite version of ICQ Lite ...
If we want functionalities (I am not going to argue what does the word functionality means), we would have stuck with ICQ PRO. Now ICQ Lite v4 is more than 2x the size of v2 and growing. Not to mention, it is slow, buggy and resource hogging.
There is a reason why people with 5~6 digits of ICQ# no longer using it, because ICQ 99b was simply better and did what it was designed to do ... to chat with friends and that is it.

I have used ICQ since it first came out in 1996. It was a fantastic tool right up until 98b version... It was fast, simple to use yet functional, and it was ad-free. Then something bad happened... AOL bought Mirabilis. As with everything AOL does, they junk it up, plug in advertising, and then it pretty much becomes worthless.

The advertising could be tolerable if it were more benign like MSN Messenger, but AIM and ICQ are just in your face these days.

Bottom line, ICQ is no longer worth it's weight in bytes.

TheVoodoo

TheVoodoo reviewed v4.01 Build 1668 on May 18, 2004

LOL! It's one of so many programs that has spreading advertisement as main function... Oh, but the fact of being able to messaging is a nice minor feature ;)

So full 5 Stars for one of the best Advertisement and Banner Apps and...
1 star for Messaging

try ''miranda im'' -> this is what icq lite should look (and work) like.

It's not bad but it's just the same old ICQ lite we have always seen under a diffrent skin with a few changes here and there. Overall the new skin is nice and clean and a bit better to use then past versions. It still has a rather large ad on the IM window and this is un acceptable even for a free program especialy when there is many other free programs like it out there that lack ads there. The buddy list ad much like the one on aim is not very destracting or annoying at all. Assuming it does not have the very very annoying video ads that AIM has then it's totaly fine with me. XtraZ so far seems to just be some little flash based games and nothing special but it is new so some better stuff should crop up in time. XtraZ hides in a simple slider menue that pops out of the left side of the buddy list and is out of the way unless you need it. This is nice unlike AIM plastering it's similer features on the bottom of the buddy list. To all the people out there that soon will make ad removers for this please only remove the IM window ad and leave the box for the buddy list ad in place and have it show the ICQ logo that is there when you first sign on before the ads conect.

utomo

utomo reviewed vBuild 1302 on Feb 16, 2004

Many people review ICQ with the angry of the Ads.
1st please remember that ICQ need to live, they need to generate income to make ICQ continue serving users.
I would like to suggest ICQ to continue delivering ICQ with ads with full features. meanwhile offering the ads free version for paid one.

Critics about ICQ is the SMS is not always reliable:
many times my SMS is reported as delivered but never reach the receiver.
also some number is not yet supported even from same operator.
Example in Indonesia:
+62812 (Telkomsel is supported)
but +62813 (which also from telkomsel) is not supported.
Other operator also not supported by ICQ, such as IM3 (+62856, +62855) and If possible better if also can send to the CDMA phone (Telkom Flexi, Mobile8, Esia).
So, here I give 3 as the rating.

Anywayz, ICQ isn't what it is used to be. I would have give 0 rating if there was an option for it.

ICQ is the first instant messaging program I ever used. I've been a user since 1996. As time went on the program started getting worse, but I was able to strip it down. I was overjoyed when ICQ Lite came out without ads. I was able to make it the smallest instant messaging desktop client. I installed 1253 and I see that the program is now getting worse. Large advertisements, search engines, bugs and more. I used to have all my clients on ICQ, now they won't tolerate it. The only people who are left are the hard core gamers, and those with the older ICQ clients. The new smileys sUx0rZ. The program crashed after installation and had to be ininstalled and reinstalled to function. The client can only be shrunk to 6" in size - taking up more than 50% of my screen when active. This is unacceptable. I'd rather have the contact list a small post-it not in the corner above my system tray. MSN Messenger is the only on that still does that.

I dont see any problems with the SEND button.... hit TAB once and then Enter and off it goes..no need to touch the mouse.. I also dont get the ADWARE bit?.. i have no ads in mine..?!?!? where is it supposed to be? And ofcourse you cant have the windowses too small.. theres no room for the controls then.. but ICQ has ALWAYS been like that.. be glad the underbanner of the MSG window is.. GONE! cos THAT WAS ANNOYING!!! I dont really have any problems with it.. if it uses so much resources that it afffects your windows then you should rund a MUCH MUCH OLDER VERSION OF WINDOWS, SUITED TO YOUR HARDWARE..or try a All-Net client like Trellian or Odigo..or sumthin..

MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH ICQ LITE..

1.
You can't resize the message dialog window, you can to some extent but you have to keep it very large, I like using small windows. For that reason this software really sucks.

2.
You have to click send every time you want to send a message, I dont know about you but I like to type and hit Enter when Im ready to send a message, not grab my mouse and click the SEND button, completely lame and wastes my time. Another reason the software sucks.

3.
Horrible Ads, the Ads are awful, and the program still uses quite a bit of system resources. I would rather use MSN and AOL together than use this piece of garbage.

I do have friends on ICQ but since there software is pathetic and geared toward 7-10 year old kids I think I will pass.

Would not recommend to anyone.

When updating from the old version it crashed. Had to remove all the entries in the regedit to make this work. It takes up more memory, its slower due to all the banners.
The new smileys are ugly, i am very very disapponted. I used to love this program.

Now its time again to look for alternatives.. or install an old version

Icq lite is a very good alternative to icq pro since it's much more simple and uses less resources.
But has anyone gotten the same problem as me the short cut in the message window TAB then enter to send, doesn't work for me like the older version, sometimes it does and sometimes doesn't odd? anyone know?
ICQ Lite Alpha Build #1025 will always allow me to do it but ICQ Lite Beta Build #1068 doesn't always allow me to do it?

ICQ Lite Supports Single Message Mode (Close/not close after send) & Allows Auto or Manual message logging, shows previous messages above last sent when in multi message mode. Next time TRY the program fully before reviewing.

Above in response to:"suprfli -like see history mode, needs a single message mode."

I like the interface / skin very much.
I really don't care if ICQ Lite includes a google search or not, but i hate to see the sms support! I really don't give a shi* on sending sms with an instant messanger. I hope in a future release there would be an option to disable unwanted features (and remove them from the interface).

btw i hope ICQ Lite will never be skinable! Its a damn good messanger with a damn good look and easy to use.

1) I'd like to see a history mode which is one of the main reasons I use ICQ. I talk w/coworkers and friends where I need to go back and reference previous conversations.
2) It needs a single message mode.

Add these 2 things and give an option not to install 4 AOL icons on my desktop, browser and start menu and this will be PERFECT.

Also, for down and dirty ICQ, especially when I'm ont he road traveling for work, has anyone tried the web interface? It works great for me and is a nice quick fix when you need it.

The design could use work, and that stupid google bar is the last thing icq needs, but i gotta say, this has to be the fastest loading icq version ever! with just over 500 peeps it takes about 40 seconds to load the original icq while with this it only takes 3. Thumbs up to this!

Removing it from the ..\skins folder results in not being able to load ICQ. I'm gonna file this as a bug and send a bug report. I think more people should do this so that the ICQ Lite folks will notice this, just incase.

Really nice. Not as heavy as bloated as the full icq.
One thing is really annying - the setup creates no less than 4(!!) AOL Icons, which pisses me off. (desktop, startmenu and 2xFavorites) I hope this "spam" is going to be optional in the next version. (kinda like winamp setup)
Oh, and another thing: animecabbit, you can set the option that only people from your contact list are able to send you msgs, you'll get rid of the "spam"

Very good, but I still would like msghistory and single message mode.
As for the person who gave it a 1 just because all ads and spam and such. Try reviewing the program, not the service.
As for spam on ICQ it's easy to protect oneself... but, it requires some intelligence (ie more than 2 braincells)!!

What can I say but WOW! This is exactly what I have been waiting for. Takes up less than a meg of RAM and has no ads. The interface is clean and simple, yet supports all of the features I need including SMS. The only real drawback is lack of automatic message history, but AIM doesn't have that either. Excellent job ICQ team!
