Publisher's Description
Index Your Files is an alternative way for you to Index and Search through all your files or folders on Local or Networked Drives. With plenty of stats about your files and various ways to manipulate them, it will provide an extremely user-friendly and powerful way to manage your information. Searching can be done by Name, Date, Size, Location, within the found file results. Use Boolean operators to perform multiple keyword searches. Use Windows Explorer context menus on found files. Use drag and drop, copy, rename, delete.

Great indexing and search functionality, not-so-great GUI - there should be user choice of font and font size for search results, for example, and the ability to select which columns are visible in the results pane. Also, filenames should show upper case where appropriate.

Best fastest index search I've ever used... oh and it's FREE! Can't beat that!

I REALLY like this as it will supposedly work in vista (win/all) whereas locate will not. The ease of use compared to locate is tempting to be sure.

How the hell can you give something such a low rating because you "doubt" that it is as good as something else? Maybe you should actually use the software before rating it.

Tried this and locate32.
I still prefer the ease and simplicity of Ava Find.
Shift+escape, type. It's that easy.
And it's free.
I wouldn't be without Ava Find, but I have taken off both Locate32 and IYF now. Neither are good enough.

Is this anywhere close to Copernic Desktop Search? I doubt it.

I think this is a superb program. The indexing and searches are fast and the ability to display text, images etc is a bonus. It's easier to understand than Locate32 though both are worth watching.

Mm-hmm. Now run both Locate32 and IYF and compare the memory usage. Locate wins. Incidentally, you CAN search "inside" files with Locate as well. Just go to the Advanced tab and select "Files containing text". Don't EVEN think for one minute that this program or Locate are the same as GDS in terms of functionality, though. They do NOT index the contents of files, they simply do a realtime search within the file once it's actually been located. **NOT the same thing!**
Also, try to find a way to clear the search results window in this program once you've actually located something..
Locate is faster (takes about a second to find/display all my PDFs with Locate, whereas IYF takes several seconds to display them all), has more options and has a better interface - this one is weird-looking. Not a bad try and worth keeping an eye on - future updates of this program might be promising but it's not ready for prime time quite yet.
Finally, I just tried to quit IYF. It took almost five seconds from the time I clicked the X to the time the window disappeared (dual-core E6400). What's up with that?

Very good application! I was using Locate which is also a great program but this one also allows to search in indexed files. This is just great!
Other good points are that indexing your files is very fast and the indexes are small. You have the convenience of Google Desktop and similar programs without the gigabytes of indexes!
To dhry: I agree that GDS and IYF are *not the same thing* and this is my point. When I want to search information in documents, I generally have an idea on the kind of documents I am looking for. I don't need to have all the data of my hard drive indexed for that... Also, I actually prefer the interface of IYF over Locate; everything is in the same window and the internal viewer is very useful.

Interesting. Needs no install. I like it
The point is, unlike locate, you can use it on any pc without having to install it. Shutdown is normal and db creation and searching work fine. Not ready for primetime my ass. It has features locate doesn't. I don't particularly care for the umpteen options within locate. Locate has one thing this doesn't; explorer context menu searching. Though with some tweaking one could create it with IYF.
