Publisher's Description

Internet Explorer is a browser developed by Microsoft. Windows Internet Explorer (formerly Microsoft Internet Explorer) is based on the Trident render engine.

Internet Explorer Collection contains multiple IE versions, which are standalone so they can be used at the same time. This is useful for web developers. Conditional Comments are important for web developers, because they use them to target specific versions of Internet Explorer. In the standalone versions Conditional Comments work exactly the same as in the native versions. The original version number is shown correcty in the User Agent string.

I already have multiple IE installed for versions up to IE6. I could not get IE 7 standalone to work because of a bug with the form input fields- so I downloaded this one just for IE7-
Worked perfectly!
I didn't install any of the other IE's, but have no doubt that they wouldn't work as well. Make sure you guys check the compatibility chart to see if your version of Windows is compatible with the browser you want to test

Installed on Windows 7, and my experience is:
- It doesn't install IE9 (?).
- The machine already had IE8 installed, so it didn't install that.
- Can't get IE7 on Win7, yeah, ok, I get that.
- So it installed two versions of IE6, neither of which work, they just crash on launch. I tried running them as Administrator, no luck.

So I started out with a machine with IE8. And now I have a machine that still has IE8, but also two broken installs of IE6.

tldr; Don't bother.

I only got up to IE6. IE7-9 are non-existent. It claimed to have IE9 installed, but then when I downgraded my IE9 back to 8, because I really needed at least 8, the supposed IE9 for IE Collection turned into IE8 and vice versa when I upgraded back to IE9. I don't have time for this bulls*** and I'm baffled as how this was even recommended to me. This was a complete waste of my time. Thanks for nothing.

But it can't/doesn't install 7 and 8. They are also outgreyed. Is that normal? Or....

I think i have installed an earlier version a year ago on xp and there I have al the verisons from 1.5 till 8!?

So your suggesting that because it packages 1-5 as well as 6-8 that it's complete junk?

You can pick which versions you want, you know, you don't have to install them all.

Having 7 & 8 side by side is extremely useful.

Using external sites like browsershots is nice, but having the actual instance of IE on your own PC is great.

It is a very small download, very quick to install and start using. I now have all versions of Windows IE on my machine so my version-compatibility testing is now much faster.

If you have any issue with the software, I suggest contacting the author via the email link on his website.

This tool will be on all of my Windows development machines.

It may have to do that my dev machine has ie6 as the default browser, but when I install ie collections whenever I click a link either one or multiple blank ie6 browser windows open. I've uninstalled it and the problem lingers, i've heard that you have to make a regedit change to fix it. Very very very lame.

When your have the problem that native IE8 popups out when opening an url in standalone IE6 you have currently set IE8 as default browser, while you should set another browser (like Firefox/Safari/Chrome/etc.) as default when you want to use standalone versions of IE.
Another solution is to set the URL you want to visit in IE6 as homepage and then press the home icon, but the first solution is preferred since it's easier and permanent.

You can find an e-mail address on the publishers website (look at the bottom).

Nice package, but despite the recent - and expected - fixes i'm still having a few troubles :

- my native IE8 has broken favorites (and so does IE7)
- when opening an url in standalone IE6, my native IE8 popups out

Any chance the fact i'm running a french XP OS could trigger these ? All my colleagues experience the same issues...
By the way, where do you report problems ? I can't find a link on the webiste...

To install all the IEs, run in compatibility mode for 95 to install 1.0, then in XP compatibility mode to install the rest. It's a bit dumb that it doesn't let you install them (it could at least say "Not compatible" but let you do it anyway).

On Vista 1.5, 2.01, 3.0 can be installed but when the installation has been done in compatible mode then you can install all, sad that only those three work, others give different kinds of kernel or other errors :(
Would be nice to use more of those on Vista but those three first version are pretty cool and wicked looking.

So far as I understand it, the purpose of this collection is to enable developers to see the mess that IE can make of their Web sites, particularly in its early versions, so that they can code accordingly. Comments about the lack of adherance to standards by IE are irrelevant, apart from the fact that this download would be irrelevant also if IE had followed standards.

pforbes

pforbes reviewed v1.1.0.0 on Aug 28, 2008

In fact nothing new. BTW, even when years ago things were different, not following the W3C Web Recommendations in 2008 is IMHO like buying a tank to make your own war...
If you build a public web page you wish people to have an easy access to reach everywhere, and not to dedicate it only to people using IE7.

Mecanoroid

Mecanoroid reviewed v1.1.0.0 on Aug 28, 2008

dssdbs : in case you do not know the description is written by the "uploader" not betanews redaction.

Second : There is no difference between "standards" and recommendations since neither are mandatory and none less descriptive than the other. It is just anal semantic.

How do u review this. Well i'll thank this program for one thing, It got my IE7 back running again. Ever since trying IE8, and reverting back to IE7, 7 has been a mess, now it works again. As for this. Interesting looking at the older versions. IE 5 is the earliest version i recognize. Using CNN.com as my test site, IE 1 to 3 didn't work at all. IE4 and and 5 did, than crashed. IE 5.5 worked good and so did the later versions. I don't use IE at all anymore, but of all the versions, I still like IE6 the best.

Me have Vista 64bit Ultimate, x64 sp1.

Also on my computer = it only install IE 1.5.

Then try to use "[xp sp2 compatibility mode, and with administrator mode]", the "iecollection1000.exe" file.

It work for me = now i can install internet explorer, from 1.5 to 8.0 beta 1 versions, with the "iecollection1000.exe" installer.

People should never use Internet Explorer as primary browser, because IE does not comply with web standards and has a lot of security vulnerabilities...

...but if you are an Internet Developer and need to test things in different versions of Internet Explorer this collection is very handy, because it's normally not possible to have more then one version of Internet Explorer installed at the same time.
So I find it quite an achievement that this program manages to get ALL(!) versions of Internet Explorer running side by side on a single system without a glitch!

I think you have a point Dracodos, but haven't you noticed that the installation is fully customizable, meaning that you are able to only install those versions of Internet Explorer that you want?

dracodos

dracodos reviewed v1.0.0.0 on Jul 30, 2008

I agree insofar as with IE 1 through 5.5. I doubt very many users have 5.5 and i sincerely doubt anyone nowadays uses 1-4. Nice for historic reasons but thats as far as it goes.

BUT having IE6 & 7 side by side can help in testing website compatibility. Having IE8 beta along with them is nice in seeing what you can expect for the future, and prepare early.

Nice idea but in my opinion create a pack with only the last 3 IEs. Thats all any user would really care about.
