Version 13 was fast and compact.

This one consumes up to 600MB of RAM and it's dog slow.

No, thank you.

It's time to switch to Avast.

1. Thrashes your HDD by constantly (every 5 seconds) writing to registry - reasons are unknown and never disclosed (the exact location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\kl1\OutData and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\kl1\InData).
2. Thrashes your HDD by constantly updating virus signatures cache files (and never cleans cache files directory and this directory can grow to several hundred megabytes).
2. Implication from point 2: causes excessive files fragmentation.

Otherwise it's the *best* AV around.

Great anti-virus software, only downside is that recent versions have made my system slow down considerably. I installed MSE as a comparison, and the difference in performance greatly favoured MSE. KAV seems to keep scanning the same core files over and over again even though it has settings to not do this.

Detection rates are not everything. If you use your computer normally and sensibly you will rarely come across things that you require protection from. Therefore how an AV interacts with your computer should be your primary concern. If your fast computer is moving at a snails pace or you find your bandwidth is being throttled then look no further then this pig as being the culprit.

KAV was a pig, then around versions 5 to 6 got great, now it's an even bigger pig. I find more false positives then ever before too

I have been using computers for years. I manage an office; security has become a subject I am at ease with. I have switched to Kaspersky last year for anti virus protection. I had tried it, used it, it did the job.

Now, with this 2009 version, things went bad. Very bad. Not one of my computers, running on XP, maintained and periodically cleaned up and reinstalled, not one of them took the upgrade smoothly. It went from slowing down the computer, to having go on a cycle of never ending rebooths. I tried to uninstall and revert back to the previous version, but to no avail. It haf damaged the operating system itself. Adding to this the arrogant attitude of their forum moderators and their systematically denying they have a major problem with their product, I would rate this software ZERO if I could here.

Very very very disappointed. I had finally to turn to another product to do the job - isn't it what we're supposed to expect when WE PAY FOR IT? Kaspersky is lucky not to have an office in my area - I would sue them for damage due to loss of productivity. Beware of companies who make any third party software incompatible with theirs. You're on for trouble using their products.

Kaspersky? Never, oh-never! again.

and Blaxima, i think you need to look up alpha/pre-beta/beta in the dictionary. i think your definition is a free software that has no bugs (most important it's free), and your thoughts (like others) are "i can't belive morrons actually pay for software, i'm using this for free". if by chance it doesn't work you start screaming that it's crap. so my suggestion is to place your head near a wall and merge your head with the wall at maximum speed, repeat again and again, until you pass out. that should probably guarantee you return when the bugs are solved.

oh look another release in the same day. Thats because of the problems people who actually tried it out were getting over at the Kaspersky forums that harlan suggests(where I'm a member).

This pre-beta version works better than the beta one released today(go figure) but v8 is not heading in the right direction

Nice try harlan by the way, changing your comments to try and cover up your your mistakes. Thats pretty lame. I have given a quick comparison off those AVs INCLUDING v8 but where in your review do you mention how v8 works(before your corrections you will no doubt make again)? I think you should look up the meaning of arbitrary before you make further edits

After years and years of various av programs, this is the only one which feels, looks, and acts like a program which takes it's duty seriously. If you configure it initially for maximum protection, it is unbeatable.(i've only used norton, mcaffee, avg free and antivir though). If a virus is found, it rips it out with ease. It really does seem to work, versus other AV programs which seem to have trouble dealing with virus', or even findng them. I've had many virus' and they've all been remedied without a hitch by Kaspersky.

Another plus is that deep scanning doesn't slow down my computer in the least (but i have 2gigs of ram so it might slow down others' computers).

This program however, is really expensive. As a poor man, i've been unable to afford it beyond the trial version. But you can buy a licence on ebay for $20, which i saw the other day which is a plus. Unknown if it works however if you have to uninstall Kaspersky av, reinstall it, and then re-enter the code.

This program kicks major ass.

hmmm... I downloaded an exe file with eMule. I scanned it with NOD32 first. Nothing. Then I scanned it with KAV, which detected Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.iz. I went online to check it out on viruslist.com, but it wasn't on the record. Then - to be on the safe side - I scanned the file online with Trend Micro, Avast, Bitdefender, F-Secure and eTrust. All said zilch. And then I was stupid enough to run it. Bang! A big BSOD. There u go!!!

Major antivirus vendors fail quality test

Kaspersky, F-Secure and Grisoft stumped by Virus Bulletin 100
Tom Sanders in California, vnunet.com 11 Jun 2007
ADVERTISEMENT

Antivirus vendors Kaspersky, F-Secure and Grisoft, maker of the popular AVG application, have failed to achieve the strict Virus Bulletin 100 antivirus certification.

The trio are among 10 antivirus applications for Microsoft's Windows XP that failed to meet the test standards set by Virus Bulletin's June 2007 test. A combined 37 software products were submitted for testing.

The VB100 is known for its strict standards. The test subjects applications to a wide set of malware that spans historical and actively circulating threats.

Qualification requires that software detects all malware that circulates in the wild and does not mislabel any safe files or applications as malware, a phenomenon known as a false positive.

AVG is a popular security application in the consumer market because Grisoft offers a free basic version of the application.

The software has a reputation for solidity and good detection, but the version submitted for testing failed to detect the W32/Rbot virus.

Kaspersky also ruined its generally solid reputation by failing to detect the W32/Allaple virus, and F-Secure's consumer antivirus application missed the same online pest.

Kasperksy and AVG corrected the problem in later updates, Virus Bulletin researchers pointed out. All three vendors passed certification in last February's test for Windows Vista and a June 2006 test for Windows XP.

The same VB100 test re-established Microsoft's OneCare security suite as a capable application. The software achieved certification in June 2006, but failed last February's test on Windows Vista.

The failing products were:

* Agnitum Outpost Security Suite Pro 2007 5.1214.616
* Ahnlab V3 Internet Security 2007 7.40.1
* Doctor Web Dr.Web 4.33.3.04230
* F-Secure Protection Service for Consumers 7.00
* Grisoft AVG 7.5 Professional Edition
* Ikarus Virus Utilities 1.0.52
* iolo AntiVirus 1.1.9
* Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0.2.621
* NWI VirusChaser 5.0a
* Proland Protector Plus 2007

Excerpts of the reply from Kaspersky Lab

"What happened at Kaspersky Lab

The threat signature for Net-Worm.Win32.Allaple.e was added to the Kaspersky anti-virus signature databases on February 1, 2007, i.e. as soon as it emerged in the wild.

As part of Kaspersky Lab’s on-going efforts to improve efficiency and optimize overall performance, the threat signature for this worm was removed from the database - temporarily - for additional testing.

It is important to note, that user security was not compromised in any way due to our multi-faceted approach to security. The Proactive Defense Module, integrated into Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 successfully detects and blocks this worm. As a result, user security is ensured by two complimentary technologies – anti-virus signatures and the PDM.

Unfortunately for Kaspersky Lab, the day that the signature was removed for testing coincided with the day Virus Bulletin was collecting anti-virus databases to conduct their tests. The databases downloaded for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 did not contain the signature for Net-Worm.Win32.Allaple.e. Since VB only tests signature-based detection, our product did not detect Net-Worm.Win32.Allaple.e."

My comments:
You just do not remove any potential threat out of your signature database just for "additional testing" - unless you are 100% sure that it is false positive. Any Virus vendor can always do testing and still retain the suspect code in their database. Let me prove my point.

"According to noted computer virus expert Paul Ducklin, in order for a virus to be considered in the wild, "it must be spreading as a result of normal day-to-day operations on and between the computers of unsuspecting users." Although there are an estimated 47,000 computer viruses, fewer than 600 are said to be circulating outside of laboratories and research facilities - hence, in the wild. Experts say these wild viruses pose the most significant threat to computers. Wild viruses typically contain a damaging payload and the ability to wipe out all computer files, sometimes even damaging a computer's BIOS.

The Wild List Organization International has compiled a cumulative list of viruses considered to be in the wild. New viral strains are added as they are reported and can be verified. Recent examples of computer viruses in the wild include Melissa, CIH, and W.32 Navidad (the Kriz virus). The Wild List Organization International maintains an updated list of wild viruses. View it here: http://www.wildlist.org/WildList/.";

You see, normal users are the ones greatly threatened by a virus ITW. When an antivirus vendor removes a malicious code out of their database just for additional testing will endanger PC's of normal users.

"Since VB only tests signature-based detection, our product did not detect Net-Worm.Win32.Allaple.e."

Very lamely said and an admission of poor database handling methodoloy and policy.

Of course, everybody will always have an excuse for every stupidity committed.

The proactive defense many times are too annonying new user.
we need to reduce user complain about this. and the ptroactive defense need smarter decission to allow common things.

And kaspersky need to improve detectiond and cleaning of the spyware.
many times after full scanning using kaspersky and clean, I still can find spyware using spybot search and destroy or ad aware.

Kaspersky also need to reduce the log file size. I found the log file can reach more than 100MB, which I think is too huge.

When we will have Kaspersky 7 ?

Surely a good AV with a nice interface. The program is relatively light on resources.

What I didn't like were the constant information bubbles "program x wants to do this", "program y wants to access that" etc. The user has to click them away and allow/disallow actions he cannot have a real clue about anyway. These information bubbles do nothing but annoy the user and give the program a snake-oil feel. The name of one of the programs components "proactive defence" just adds to the snake-oil feel.

I prefer NOD32. It quietly sits in the tray until user action is really necessary. Has a more honest touch to it.

Simply the best antivirus there is.
-highest detection rate
-great spyware and malware detection too
-frequent small updates
-very low resource usage - yes, even lower than NOD32
-simple and attractive interface

If you want to buy an antivirus, KAV should be your first pick. It is especially good for those who seem to get their machines infested on a regular basis.

The freebies (AntiVir, Avast and AVG)are all good but don't compare to KAV.

*Yes, generally good.
I'm a owner of a german box version of 'Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0.1.300.
Now I want test this BETA version.
But the Kaspersky authors have own conceptions.
If you are a owner from a german version of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0.1.300 and you want this THIS betaversion, it not works.
This version faults the reg.-key.
That means now, that for us legal users it is forbidden to test a beta ??
- That would be sad and short-sighted, since one excludes willing users - !*

Why even bother posting a review when you have no idea how to use the software, or how it works? You need to check the support forums, because you are obviously a bit less technical than someone that should even consider beta testing.

buckshee is right. There are issues with KAV and some firewalls, certainly Outpost. I can guarantee that NOD32 works flawlessly with Outpost and several other firewalls (Look 'n Stop, Tiny, Jetico) I have trialed over the last year. For those who say they have no issues using KAV with Outpost, that means you had to have compromised the network scanning settings of KAV to avoid conflicts. Sorry, but that is simply unnaceptable in my books. It actually seems that KAV beta testers are in denial over the many issues with KAV. Very puzzling.

In the case of Kerio, Set `enable network security mode" to `on' then remove the Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, e-mail programs etc from the list below and hit apply. Close the setup window. Now when you start the programs that were removed from the list they should all ask permission to access the web, SOME, but not all will access the web without asking permission of Kerio. This is NOT just my computer it is a known issue. It is something to do with KAV using proxy for web pages

I used 5.0 before and I can tell you that with KAV 6.0 my computer runs faster and my web pages load faster. After it does a full scan the first time the following scans will not take half the time. If KAV 6.0 detects viruses and trojans like KAV 5.0 did this will be hard to beat.

Pros

1. Good virus protection
2. Lots of updates

Cons

1. Resource Hog
2. Tons of false positives. Uninstalling Download accelerator was viewed as a virus and wouldnt allow it.. I had to turn off the virus protection.
3. Slow system scans

Sticking with NOD32. Detects spyware, malware, and has had an HTTP filter for a long time now. Also checks the hard drive much faster, and uses way less resources.

NOD32 - 5
Kaspersky - 3

Too bad a potentially awesome antivirus utility is turning into a hunk-of-junk. There is something seriously wrong with the way it scans on ports. It does it in such a way that it interferes with the firewall's port monitoring, especially Outpost Pro, versions 2.7 to 3.5, effectively blocking Internet access or, at least, slowing the browsing speed. I'm extremely impressed with KAV's detection rate, additional protection options and its ability to scan only new and changed files, significantly increasing the overall scan speed. The interface is one of the best in the business.

In spite of those features, the issues overshadow them. I mean, let's face it, when a utility cripples your Internet access, it does not warrant a glowing review.

Sorry Eugene Kaspersky, you may have a faithful gaggle of followers in the Kaspersky forum who, it seems, are so infatuated with the product they are willing to put up with the numerous bugs in it (yes, there are several others not as serious as the one I mentioned, but I can't be bothered to list them), but they are present and very tangible to those who pay attention.

Sorry to say, but NOD32 is still the better antivrus app, but don't dare post that in the Kaspersky Forum; the flames will erupt.

pros:
-best virus detection rate
-feature rich (useful too)

cons:
-still eats too much RAM
-cumbersome, slow
-bugs, crashes

i'd prefer to give 3.5 really

all in all, NOD32 is a better choice

KAV has the best detection rate of ANY AV. On my computer it is using about 10 MB RAM right now -
http://img45.imageshack.us/my.php?image=k10cz.jpg
one of the lowest I've tested. After an initial scan, it does not re-scan unchanged files, making performance very fast. Updates are the smallest I've seen, much smaller than NOD32 which I have used for the last 2 years.

This is the best AV I have tried. I recommend KAV to anyone who wants the best protection and the best performance.

sQin

sQin reviewed v6.0.0.299 on Mar 29, 2006

what are you talking about? its faster than any other AV. It doesn't scan the file twice as all others do. Thats speeds up browsing directories with many files/archives inside. NOD32 is great, but just compare the speed of copying some .exe files with KAV speed. nod32 has powerful but slow heuristic engine. i was using nod32 for more than 1,5 years but now i feel a real performance increase with KAV on my old 1,2GHz cpu

First impression is very deep scanning as number
of items checked does not increase so quickly .
Slow scan (time needed for scan is desplayed on main screen)
Excellent database(number of known threats displayed) .
Latest experts reviews say that Kaspersky's database is actually
one of the most complete .
Easily connects to its server for updates ,
which are fast & do not slow down pc or disrupt other
running process .

It does not use so much RAM wheter protecting or
scanning(except subfolders scan) & does not
slow down pc while loading on start up .

Complete active protection including script check
(while surfing web) , intrusion shield &
detection of unknown threats .
Number of script checks can be seen
on left side of browser screen .
Fairly annoying behaviour , protecting by threats while
surfing the web (may slow down pages opening) .

Still unacceptably bogs the system down. When used with Outpost pro fw, Ad muncher and outlook.exe have to be placed in the firewall's trusted zone, or network access will be blocked. This is all due to the built-in Port monitoring functionality of KAV. The only way to gain acceptable performance out of this version of KAV is to disable the monitoring of HTTP ports in KAV - at the trade off of compromised security. That is a joke!

NOD32 is, so far, superior to KAV.

TC17, how do you rationalize KAV being overpriced? The cost is $34.95 USD. Most other av products are $39.95 USD

Okay, I'm not going to say it's the best because I don't really know what the best is. My system has been virus free for almost 3 years. However, I do like some of the improvements Kasperskylabs have built into this version.

The scan profile can be saved and loaded if needed. Very nice.

On my system, a maximum 27 MB RAM used during Real-Time monitoring state with no impact on the CPU. During a system scan, CPU usage fluctuates to a maximum of >90%, but I can still surf the 'Net without any problems. Also very nice.

The silly "flashing icon" can be stopped.

An impressive list of "Objects" can be chosen for a scan.

The "Threats and Exclusions" setup seems to work better; in the previous version, Kaspersky had a proclivity to scan objects that were excluded. Not so with this one.

Added May 28/05: If the Real Time scanning, for whatever reason, needs to be disabled, it can be set to re-enable after a given period of time which the user can set.

Things I don't like: When an infected object (I used an Eicar test file for my experiment) is chosen via right-click option for a scan, a "Process" button first has to be clicked before you're taken to the disinfect, Delete & Skip options. Kind of annoying. Yes, Kaspersky detected it as infected, otherwise I'd have been thoroughly annoyed.

The floppy drive still cannot be excluded from a scan. Just try to exclude it in the "Threats and Exclusions" list and you'll hear the thrashing of the floppy drive when the scan is initiated. This is only somewhat annoying because it adds just a brief delay to the system login.

In all, a very impressive program with some fairly significant improvements. When my license expires, I'll have a very difficult decision on whether to continue with Kaspersky or switch over to NOD32. If NOD32's detection rate is proven to be equal or better to Kaspersky's in dependable reviews, then I will switch over to NOD32. Otherwise, I feel more secure venturing into the forest with a cannon than with a Glock.

I used to rave more about KAV than I do now. I agree that it's the best detector, but the performance hit on my system was so bad and so constantly aggravating, I had to remove it. A solution that you can't stand to use is hardly "the best".

I might add that I have a better idea of where performance hits are occurring than 99.9% of everyone else, because I run FreeMeter Pro at all times, and I just plain pay attention to my system. When I'd notice a slowdown, I'd look over and sure enough, KAV was the culprit. If I didn't pay attention to such things, I would have just learned to deal with it like everyone else. And then I'd come back here and say that KAV was "THE BEST".

I've matured enough as a software maven to realize that there is no single "best" anti-malware application, any more than there is a single "best" gun. A cannon sure beats a Glock in terms of sheer power, but is it "THE BEST" for personal protection? Thanks for seeing my point. Move along now.

All I can do is admit I'm wrong and, therefore, change my review on this fine product. When I first reviewed this antivirus, I was rather intoxicated, which prevented me from properly testing this software. Second, I had a terrible experience with NOD 32's Support team. They would not send me a registration key after I purchased their product on-line. After two un-answered emails on the problem, I decided to drop them like a bomb and cancel my purchase. There is absolutely no excuse for this kind of impertinence. Too bad, because it's a very good product, but I will not tolerate a complete lack of professionalism from any software vendor. Because it was so hard to ignore the high percentage of glowing reviews on Kaspersky, I decided to give it another try. This time I was sober. I was very impressed indeed with the detection ability of Kaspersky. It caught numerous Internet "exploit" type viruses that not even the venerable NOD 32 could detect. Furthermore, Kaspersky removed them all. As for scan speed, it isn't as fast as NOD but still acceptable enough, especially when you consider the fact that you'll probably do a full scan only about once/week. As I stated in my first review, the interface is very clean and comprehensive and the program is not overly demanding on the pc. It's so much less intrusive than Trend-Micro or the vastly over-rated king of bloatware, Symantec. I've just checked the Task Manager on my XP Pro system, and so far it's drawing about 13 MB of RAM with only two processes running. Pretty impressive! All I can say is: too bad for NOD 32. I really liked their product and was ready to purchase it, but their support - or lack thereof - really screwed up. Anyway, I'm very happy with Kaspersky and will continue to subscribe to this excellent product after my initial subscription expires next year.

You are a fool to say ADSTREAMS are harmless. Doesn't Kasperskys page say they adds the streams on first scan only and do not check the file for viri unless the file has changed? WHat if the DEF's used on initial scan don't cover the viri but later new DEF's did cover it? Wouldn't it be wise to scan the file later with new DEF's?

ALSO my friend I went down the road with KAV on detecting commiceral keyloggers. During the 5.0 Beta they allowed the auto update of special DEF's that were suppose to cover RISKWARE, COMMERCIAL KEYLOGGERS ect. But during m testing they never did detect the commercial keyloggers.
I never did really get a satisfying answer from them.
YES they do find most viri and prolly more trojan than other scanners but I do not like the streams left behind on every single file on your drive and the cleaning tool on their site does not work for crap. There are better ones.

KAV adds tags to all of your files (streams)

You won't see them while you have KAV installed but you will see them when you uninstall it.
Because of this I will never use another Kaspersky product again.

KAV Personal does SMTP/POP scanning by default, contrary to what a reviewer above says. And it of course scans any files you download via the web, or while browsing, whether you are using SSL, TLS, or not.

KAV Personal lacks the configurability of the Pro version, but it also lacks the increased price tag. It has all the configurability most users need. Version 4.5 went way overboard with the configuration options, and it was easy for a user to unknowingly get themselves in trouble with it (that, or be forever tweaking it, with no real benefit).

All that said, the new IDS feature of this version is something I'd rather take a pass on. It can be disabled, thankfully, which is good--since I have problems with email without doing so. There really are no compelling features in this version, above 5.0.156, as far as I'm concerned.

But, a more recent test of scanners showed nod32 came 21st in a test (http://www.virus.gr/engl...lt.asp?id=67&mnu=67), and Kaspersky at the top.

For my money, Kaspersky is keeping me safe, but i would like it to be a little more light-weight and user friendly.

I've used both Kaspersky and Nod32 and i would have to learn towards Kaspersky for virus protection but towards NOD32 for features and friendliness, On a side note, The reason why MIRC comes up as a virus/torjan is because someone figured a way to script mirc to run as a torjan/ddos zomebie and hide it from taskmanager/windows (quite easy if you look into it and run it as a service), I know this because i was a victim. So if you see C:\windows\system32\mirc.exe then you KNOW you've got a zomebie bot installed but thank god zone alarm picked it up and so did kasperky. Kasperky won't auto del a legit ver of mirc unless you set it to audo del suss files but rather prompt you.

I give this app 5 out of 5 but i do notice sometimes it eats a bit cpu time compared to NOD32

Very good, but I'm not convinced it has better virus detection than NOD32, which is now my antivirus of choice.

Kaspersky is the best Anti-Virus out. I don't expect you to believe anyone's comment. The only true advise is from yourself. Give it a try run a scan, and see how many viruses Kaspersky picks up that your current AV didn't...if any.

Favorite Features:
- Updates every 3 hours. Also can grab virus signatures from one databases and/or you can grab spyware signature from another database.

- Detection rate is outstanding.

- Monitor scripts from browser the internet.

Enjoy...I do!

only prob is
picks up mirc as a virus and deletes it

5 for kasperspy - 2 for mirc = 3 stars

The Kasperaky Anti-Virus Personal 5.0 install is about 9 MB total. Far from "huge". And I have no problem with the scan speeds, but if it is slower than some competitors, that is because it has the best unpackers in the business, and is scanning a greater number of files.

If Kaspersky misses something that BitDefender catches, tell us exactly what it is. You can't, because it doesn't. Period. Even if you did come across the rare trojan that Kaspersky wasn't aware of, if you send it in to them, they will have it added within a couple hours. Try that with some other vendor.

And yes, it's true: Kaspersky Lab provides updates every three hours. Not every week. Not every five days. Not only on weekdays or non-holidays, because "Hey, we save money by giving Steve weekends off". Every three hours, every day. Again, industry-leading performance.

Version 5.0 is a great stride in usability, and still provides industry-leading detection rates for viruses, worms, and, importantly, trojans. Nothing else even comes close. Don't take my word for it, though: Go talk to some of the people who make and distribute malware, and see which anti-virus product gives them the most headaches--or which one THEY use. They usually say "Kaspersky".

The scan is slow. System slowdown due to KAV install is huge. Bitdefender detects malware that KAV keeps missing on my system.

- KAV 5.0 is completely compatible with SP2
- KAV 5.0 has a 3 hour definition update service

KAV 5.0 is one of the fastest antiviruses around, and don't tell me that its scan is "slow".

Great AV... one of the best. www.av-comparatives.org

only drawback is a slow scan, but this is due to it's superior quality so tis not a real negative.

Kaspersky 5 is good.
But they need to improve it
- When I try to update, my application version still showing 5.0.142. we need to be able to update the application version too.
- Try to reduce the system resources use. somtimes it still high.
- Better handling/removing the problems found. sometimes it cannot clean correctly. eventough it is rare.
and other improvements

Questions ? does this compatible with win xp sp2 ? ( i cannot find any informations regarding this)

VikingBlade reviewed v5.0.149.4 on Aug 30, 2004

Surprised the screenshot hasn't been updated, in any case. KAV has the best protection period, with the only firm that has a 1 hour definition release cycle, and the most comprehensive database. I'm still waiting for the Pro version though.

Kaspersky v3 was great from a user standpoint. Kaspersky v4 had some issues and ended up too complex for the normal user. Kaspersky v5 is great. It's simple and it still retails the quality of what is expected from Kaspersky as far as an antivirus program. This version, however, has been out for a bit before it was listed here. I updated to it on the 9th of the month and it's now 21 days later...

I use NOD32 as my real-time scanner these days for numerous reasons but I still give Kaspersky 5 stars.

Pixelsmack reviewed v5.0.149.4 on Aug 30, 2004

I tried this once before and was very impressed. But I was turned off by the complex interface. So I went with Panda. Now I am happy with Panda's software, but their tech support is crap. I hardly ever get a response from them and if I do it's usually "reinstall". Now that Kerpasky 5 has a much more simple interface; it's time to switch.

I upgraded from KAV 4.5, and I really thought I'd miss 4.5's advanced features. But for the most part, I don't. I do miss command-line options and a couple other things, but the simplicity of KAV 5.0, and its improved performance, make this version much better than the previous for me. I have better things to do with my time than tweak a Fisher-Price anti-virus interface anyway.

The 5.0 is the KING! Fast and very user friendly.

There is a new bugfix build 5.0.142 released.

  reviewed v4.5 on Apr 11, 2004

Kaspersky is King. The most extensive virus/adware/trojan/dialer/riskware database in the business, and also tech support and virus analyst personnel who actually respond to you... I have sent a few malware samples in, and always get a quick and helpful response (just did today, in fact--had a reply within ONE HOUR!). There is NO anti-malware utility that does an overall better job detecting viruses or trojans. The downside is that Kaspersky Anti-Virus can be a drag on the CPU on some systems.

scodan

scodan reviewed v4.5 on Nov 6, 2003

Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal (KAVP) has a reputation which precedes it--but only among those that have a clue and who have done their homework. It is a well-known fact among malware utility mavens that KAVP is better than ALL other anti-virus utilities at detecting trojans. As far as viruses (yes, that's the word--not "virii") and worms go, KAVP is as good as any other. As soon as I installed KAVP, it picked up a couple email nasties that PC-cillin 2003 had totally missed. If you want a cute, simple interface with neato-keen sound feedback when you click the buttons, get Norton. If you want a crappy firewall and other bloat, get the new version of PC-cillin. But if you want to have full control over every nuance of your anti-malware utility, with defaults that work great out of the box, and top-of-class detection capability, all in a no-nonsense package, get KAVP. Oh yes--KAVP did fail in the June, 2003 VB100 test. Why? Because it had one false positive!

I've tested quickly v4.xx ... too 'heavy' and too many 'add-on' for a single workstation. I'm waiting for an updated version close to the v3.5. I generally bypass the control center installation; just the monitor, very good for a 'normal' use.

VikingStorm

VikingStorm reviewed v4.5 on Jun 14, 2003

Though Kaspersky is one of the most useful antiviruses in that it has the best unpacking engine of every antivirus, 4.5 is a slight improvement over the bloated 4.x. Unless you want to use this as an on-demand scanner, I suggest you wait for the upcoming much much speedier 5.0.

Doesn't truly seem to be a whole lot new here. A different look. The processing does seem a lot faster on my Dell Dimension L500r 192 Ram P3. Using XP PRO haven't had any conflicts using early version of this software on this pc.
The beta version has run fine - updated fine etc for several days now. I've read reports here & online of people having problems getting virus protection to run under XP ( all versions ). But Kaspersky AVP has run good for me under XP since version 3.5.133. I like the look of this latest version. And as I stated before - doing a full all file manual scan seemed to run faster than it had in the past.
