There are some really dumb comments here from people who clearly don't know what the program does. I've used it for years and it's very good at doing what it says on the box... Just read the box first.

It is a good program. I loved it when I was using it, but to me it is SERIOUSLY flawed. You buy it and it expires. Every year you have to pay them to continue using it. So it is not buy to own but a yearly subscription. I used my own filters and not their "online databases" but still I cannot use the program I purchased. I was a loyal user since v6, but I won't support programs that expire. At the time I bought the 20xx versions they didn't mention this little nugget of info. When I complained about the extortion, they offered me another year but I didn't accept it. You can stop supporting a program, you can make it so you can't get updates, but if you make it stop working even though it was installed and working, your program is garbage.
So just be warned. It is NOT shareware or anything of the type as listed on this page. It is a trial software that is subscribed to with a yearly fee attached. It's not even as nice as the antivirus software, most of those expire but you can keep using them but not updating the definitions, this program won't even load once expired. I guess they didn't like the fact that you could write your own filters and not use their "online databases" and still have the program work quite effectively, so to keep leaching money out of you they just expired the program so you can't use it. I highly recommend you do NOT buy software that works this way.

Negative posters here are not terribly bright:
1) Not everyone likes and uses webmail.
2) MailWasher allows the user to deal with (delete) spam and unwanted email at the server, so it is never downloaded to the computer.
MailWasher is a terrific spam/email manager. Quickly and easily preview emails held on the server with one click. Mark any unwanted emails for deletion then one click to view the remainder through your email client.
Spam never gets near your machine....too easy!!

Um, ok. So this program get all my mail first, lets me look at all the spam and all the messages, delete them if I choose. THEN I have to open my email program and get the messages again?
This is a strange way of dealing with email, seems like it would be a much slower process.
I would just switch my email client to Thunderbird, train the spam filter by showing it spam and non-spam messages, (no one trains their filter which is why most of them fail) and that would take care of it in a single program.

I've been using this for years and haven't had an issue since 5.0 or so. It's the perfect solution not only for dealing with spam but also filtering and clearing other unwanted or unnecessary email without having to download it from the server. Over time, you'll find lots of other neat little personal uses for it. I can't live without it now.

It appears 'Undesired Username' has never used the programme. If the programme is used you can easily find options never to show spam!
For those that have used it, including myself since its very early days - it the probably the best way to get rid of spam, and never download it. No plugin's, thus not tied to a specific email client.
Undesired Username reviewed v6.3 on Oct 13, 2008
I've always thought the whole MailWasher approach was senseless. Rather than use a spam filter that gets obvious spam messages out of your face, where you can look at them at your convenience (or never), it forces you to always have to look at spam, and take an extra step just to get all of your email.

Wow, it's been over a year since the last update. The UI got redone quite a bit. Some new features although not an insane amount of changes. A free upgrade for previous v5 users.
Five stars from me for always doing what it is supposed to do and saving my inbox from an ungodly amount of spam and other unwanted email.

Spam is every where. I don't care if you're a blue frog member, or a MSAS member. You are not gonna defeat it. This program is better then both of those programs. Another one of my favorites is spamhibulator. Either of these programs do what they say. This program i would rate up there with SH.
pjb reviewed v5.3 on Jul 7, 2006
Still a pretty good app, however thier support tends to be lacking i.e. when you submit a bug it appears to go on their backburner. There have been 2 releases and they have not fixed the acknowledged bug. The app has tripled in size over the past years, but I think under 4 megs is reasonable.
It was a lot better when Nick B was doing it himself!
Still the app works, and does what it is susposed to do.

This is an excellent program that I've been using for a few years now. But why does Betanews keep putting bad links up?: "NOT FOUND The requested object does not exist on this server. The link you followed is either outdated, inaccurate, or the server has been instructed not to let you have it."
Great program anyway...
pjb reviewed v4.181 Beta on Sep 22, 2004
This is an excellent programme, which just gets better with each build. It is very stable and reliable.
I would suggest to SlowNeasy that you try the download link again, and instead of marking the programme down just because the link was unavailable wait until you have downloaded and reviewed the programme (which is what this area is for!).
rbailin reviewed v4.181 Beta on Sep 22, 2004
The easiest way to catch 95% of spam with this program is to create a rule that flags any message where the "To:" field does *not* contain your email address. Then just blacklist the domain of anything that slips by this one rule.
Overall, a very nice, effective program.

A great tool for filtering out that goshdarned spam. However, I couldn't give it a 5 because it has some annoying habits, such as selecting an item (seemingly at random) at the bottom of the mail list every time I open the window and telling me I have new mail when old messages are deleted from my POP server (I keep my messages on the server for a week). It also sometimes "forgets" that I have ticked the learning checkboxes, forcing me to tick them again.
QBgreen reviewed v4.0 on May 13, 2004
A must-have tool. Built in filtering learns what you consider spam quickly and well. Well known spammer databases can also be used to tighten things up even more. BOB IMHO!

ghammer reviewed v3.3 on Nov 18, 2003
Best thing since sliced bread! I have tried literally every app free or shareware that does spam. Some flat out suck, some are ok, some require too much configuration. None approach this app in ease of use and the ability to kill spam. Especially with the new FirstAlert option, a realtime database of known spam. Why download the messages from your server in the first place? Kill them in place. You can even generate a bounce message for those spam you think that would help with. Can you tell I like this app! Try it, you'll love in in no time.

paul-white reviewed v2.0.19 Beta on Dec 4, 2002
For downloading large amounts of mail this program might have its uses but I feel that it is very much over-rated. Programs of this type are pretty much useless or cumbersome when downloading single emails at frequent intervals. There are better programs although I suppose people should use what ever works for them depending on how much mail they receive and how often they download it.
andyslavik reviewed v2.0.19 Beta on Dec 4, 2002

Great program. Please allow RESIZE of Error window. No good to show verbose errors if you cannot read them. Using Eudora w/mailwasher leaves a little to be desired, I cannot actually download my hotmail into Eudora? Maybe I am just not setting up something properly somewhere. Glad to see it now works properly with Hotmail, except bouncing doesnt seem to work. Defintly worth the price though, I love 'Free' software thats not filled with annoying ads, your "ad" is more of an informative nature so its not to annoying, but please consider removing it. This program will stand on its own and generate revenue WITHOUT the ad, it really is THAT good!

If the light went out, that's just because I came creeping in the dark to put a five star rating for MailWasher under my signature. Although I hope I always will be able to see the homeless, I do see your point cadarts ((-: Fact is that the 2xxb is getting so good that I honestly can't avoid turning around and leave some principles behind (just for this time). Yes, its still a nagware in my book, as "freeware" is something "holy". Well, I loved advertisingware when that first came. It was a great way for the developer to earn something and the user to get something. That was before dirty fingers from greedy advertisers turned that "perfect marriage" into spyware/adware. MailWasher is NOT spyware, and that's a major difference. Apart from that it has grown into one of the really great programs around (and yes, I have also more than hundred spam mail a day) - and Nick and Jan-Pierre should have my recognition too for that. So guys, now you can turn on the light again - I have finished my voting. Who me, eh?

It's called nagware when the shareware asks you to register and/or donate in some way or another. This program has gotten so good, I think I'll send him some money. Not to stop the nagging, but because it's a great program!

I have been using this program for a few months, my only complaint is it won't bounce mail from your Hotmail account if you use Earthlink for your ISP, apparently Earthlink blocks access to the remote MX Servers that Mailwasher uses to bounce Hotmail accounts.
It will bounce mail sent to an Earthlink POP though.
Arnvid reviewed v2.0.13 Beta on Oct 31, 2002
He, he... I tried to avoid adding my points to this program - exactly because of points coming up here. Tested the program from the early start and it's surely not less good as the programmer absolutely seem to be capable. Still... Fact is that the program did most of what I would need of such a program, and I truly understand that the programmer need to get something back from kind persons who support freeware and starving programmers. Still this rolling beggar-king attitude on the top was directly annoying to me at least - so I uninstalled as I got tired of someone asking me for money every time there was mail (and that’s around the clock here). Is it’s adware? It’s a kind of advertisement, but as said by Cirque - it’s not spyware. So as “adware” has become nearly identical to being “spyware”, I would not call it adware due to the options for misunderstanding. “Self-Advertisingware” maybe, but the rolling beggar on the top 24 hours a day is for me nothing more and nothing less than nagging - so for me it’s absolutely not “freeware”, it’s “nag-ware”. If this begging was done a bit more “ethically” and in a no-nags way, then I would consider it a freeware - most likely it would get more users this way as well? So for the software as a tool, I would consider giving the program a four plus rating - due to the nag-begging banner I would say that this part is so annoying that it can’t be called “freeware” -so one star for the nag. Total then maybe three star?
Cirque reviewed v2.0.12 Beta on Oct 31, 2002
Wonderful Program! "Must Have" addition to any mail user. FREE to use, tips appreciated. 1 Banner ad (within program GUI) explaining program is free and author accepts tips, not exactly what I would consider adware. No popups, no changing ads loading from the internet, no time to register nag, for all intents and purposes its fully functional freeware (with 1 reminder that its free, quit your crying).
dkg_ctc reviewed v2.0.11 Beta on Oct 26, 2002
It's hard to consider a program which has a scrolling ad at the top of a window which talks about the incentives of registering to be freeware. Adware would be a better category for Mailwasher. That being said, I like Mailwasher's capabilities, and would recommend it--but as adware, not freeware.

ook reviewed v2.10 Beta on Oct 24, 2002
Update - it appears that the current beta has a problem working with proxy servers. If I shut mine down, it works fine. If you use AdSubtract or other type of ad/cooking blocking software that acts as a proxy server, Mailwasher may not be able to access hotmail. It also appears to use Internet Explorer proxy server settings. A serious flaw in this otherwise fine program is that you can't manually adjust proxy server settings yourself.

Excellent program! I registered it a few months ago cause I liked it so much. A feature that I would REALLY love, however, is the ability to have bounced emails sent to your SpamCop.net account. I joined this forum just so I could refute the absurd review posted by 'shumai'. I don't know what this person's problem is -- they are so out of the ballpark that I think they're reviewing the wrong program or something. They have no clue.
Mailwasher, along with things like Proxomitron, is one of those "must have" utilities that makes the Internet so much more enjoyable. It downloads mail headers so you can preview your mail. It maintains lists of 'friends' and 'spammers' and will highlight the headers accordingly. You can then decide to bounce the mail back to its originating server, or to keep it on your server, ready for your email program to download.
I have no idea what Shumai is on about -- it doesn't download the body and isn't capable of corrupting anything.
As other reviewers have said, the only thing missing is IMAP and the ability to access Hotmail accounts -- hence the 4 stars. It'd be a 5 if it had that.

This program has been unreliable for me. I have given up hope. This thing is corrupting files all the time for me. I don't get why, it doesnt seem to happen with Zips or Rars, but with RPMS and tar.gz, it seems to corrupt them. In addition to that, the program is difficult to use, and the options are poorly laid out. I strongly recommend any other alternatives.

I thought I reviewed this already, odd.. Anyway, I love this program. I first heard about it about 6 months ago and downloaded it. It had a few bugs which were causing it not to work for me sometimes, so I contacted the author and he replied really fast with information on whats causing it and then he released a fix the same day, and e-mailed me to let me know! I've been using it ever since, as a registered user btw. And now with that klez virus going around, I love mailwasher even more, I was getting over 40 klez emails a day, not anymore.

Brilliant - it works, and superbly, unlike a number of similar packages I've tried. (At the moment it's catching about 95 per cent of spam I receive; I deliberately diverted a horribly infested Bigfoot account into one of my POP3 accounts as a stiff test, and MailWasher passes with flying colours). Four stars rather than five, though, as IMAP4 isn't supported. As I'm forced to use Outlook at work, with its utterly worthless junk mail 'filtering', MailWasher is nugatory there, which is a great pity. I'll see what the author says about this, as he hints there'll be support for protocols other than POP3 if there's enough demand.

maybe some good spam stop - but the best will be if the program could search for open relays in the received mail, and remove all these mails before, a user will download from a mailserver ! programwriter you have that in mind?

This is THE best every program to delete messages and bounce the friggin spam....absolutly terrific..only drawback i see is the inability to check hotmail, which I would LOVE to have......if at any way possbile please include that, as I have exceeded my 250 Block capablity and they do not up this, so IU am screwed, i get aprox 50 a day just in spam.
I will dl now and see if it has this now integrated, i will also contact the author now.
GREAT JOB
