Terrible product, detection rates are poor, especially for rootkits and scam-type fake security software.

The corporate version is equally troublesome and will often fail to unload correctly on logoff.

I think it is really good. I tried NIS 2009 and think it is the best. No bloat, and I hear it is top rated and the pulse updates. But I am sticking with McAfee's 2nd highest product because it works, does not seem to be bloated. The reason I do not move to NIS? Comcast foots the McAfee bill. www.comcast.net/security. I would still suggest McAfee to other people too.

First of all "i hate Security center" too, but someones like it. So mcafee should use it as optional component.

And btw it isn't as buggy as you think. No bugs with my computer.

And Mcafee is quite good still. I know that almost all choose like NOD32 or similar. You know why nod32 gathered so much popularity? Because it isn't resource hog. But mcafee has taken some good example too and mcafee isn't half bad anymore. (I give mcafee plus for that)

So my opinion with nod32 and mcafee is " A DRAW "

Hey,

for over 2 or 3 years with every new Version of McAfee VirusScan, you have to install this damn McAfee SecurityCenter, which is bloated and advertise other McAfee apps, etc.
I hate this and McAfee don't offer you an option to only install VirusScan, without this s*** SecurityCenter!!

The only last McAfee VirusScan without the SecurityCenter is Version 7 (maybe 8..) and this one was good!

So the McAfee AV Engine is very good and performances well (especially the new 5000 or 5.0.0 beta 3 Engine..), but the necessary to install that f*** McAfee SecurityCenter GUI is lame and so, I don't use it anymore.

Only if you have in future the ability/possibility to install only McAfee VirusScan WITHOUT this SecurityCenter, then I will give McAfee a new chance and try..

Yippeee! Mcafee has beaten everyone to the mkt with a prompt release to counter new-viruses,spyware.
The software is stable,not a resource-hog,and very easy to use.
And for people crying bloatware&related stuff,plz get a life and visit pcmag.com for mcafee2006 reviews which has been rated editor's pick.
Overall it's the best available anti-virus**today**,so go ahead and don't be shy!

Run's faster than the previous version. I also like the Anti-Spyware, Firewall program that have also been updated. I'd recommend the Suite over just bying the Anti-Virus program by itself. I have found the new version found stuff that was on my computer that Norton's had missed. Norton's totally slows my computer down, but McAfee's does not.

After downloading beta1 yesterday, I see beta2 today... Downloaded the superdat Beta2eng5000 and it says "already have the latest engine installed"

I have seen a small speed increase on this pc with viruscan enterprise and beta1, but did not subscribe to the mailing list right off to see if there were special instructions for beta2 after beta1....

For many years I used Norton Antivirus until I worked at a PC repair shop. I found that McAfee would find alot of trojans especially, that Norton would miss during a scan. Great AV program, has never failed at completely protecting my home computer either.

Far better than Norton's bloated AV, uses less cpu and memory resources and has great virus detection engine.
Personally still found it slow and memory hog when compare it with the excellent F_Prot.

I'm still trying out this program but so far I do like it. The interface is attractive and it doesn't seem to bog my system down like some virus scanners have that I tried recently. Its also one of the best for detecting virus/trojans. You can usually get it for a good price with rebates they have often, or buying an OEM cd on pricewatch.com. As you can clearly see, Mcafee is among the best Antivirus programs available. If you absolutely need to go with a big vendor, then I'd recommend Mcafee, otherwise, go with the top rated F-Secure version 5.40

After actually trying McAfee 8, this is what I can tell you. You need to sign up with an email address. You must disable your popup stopper and installation is automatic, similar to Netscape - it's about a 5mb download. I tested it with a disk infested with the CIH virus - pass. I knowingly downloaded a virus from Kazaalite - pass. I downloaded the EICAR test file and it spotted the .com and .txt file, but not the zipped files - only RAV got them in my tests before actually scanning them.
In conclusion McAfee is small, relatively quick and very effective. McAfee went from 40+mb to 27mb and now down to 5mb. McAfee can again compete with the best antivirus software available. I like it a lot.
P.S. For those who didn't bother to download, the user interface is different than the one shown.

Another new version of junk from McAfee. McAfee is a terrible resource hog and does a terrible job at detecting viruses. Check out NAV 2003 or NAV 2004 in a few months for a superior AV product.

Who would even consider Norton's OR McAfee. Both are bloatware. Try PC-Cillin! The thing is as slim as they come, auto-updates and all. And those guys don't claim to be all big and bad. Server-line products are nice too. Was first turned on to them when using OfficeScan, does a great job! I'll admit, I started with Norton's, even used McAfee... but stopped using anything because I knew I'd slow down my system as soon as they went on. Not to mention, I have been seeing a lot of probs with McAfee not detecting latest viruses (even with updates), insisting on Quarentines and not providing a cleanable solution, and computers just being utterly trashed when a customer brings them in to work on. I try to switch them over to Trend (PC-Cillin) I love how they keep themselves from being uninstalled or not allowing PC-Cillin to install while they're on there. - Well, everyone has their own opinion. -Cheers-

I don't believe that McAfee deserves a 5 rating let alone this 2 rating I am giving them. Quite funny how Klez virus was UNDETECTED in an email attachment. And yes, my virus definitions were updated.

I'd be wary of their products, just because one person says it's good, you're the minority out of the general population. Once your company has a bad rep, it sorta sticks.

Funny but the reason I changed was because I had nothing else but trouble with NAV therefore I bought McAfee 6.0 a couple of month ago and I've been a very happy man since no trouble at all it´s just ROCKSTEADY now no crashing no nothing and I haven´t had any trouble upgrading it, it still runs ROCKSTEADY so don´t come and tell me it´s McAfee who´s the problem it´s just too easy to blame the program than blaming your own configuration skills I think it´s there all problems start.

pretty aweful stuff. I bought this, and had problems the same day. Infact, after upgrading from 6.0 to 6.01 I immediatly started crashing. The program is also very heavy on memory. I'm hoping they cleaned up in 6.02. The customer service is pretty nonexistant also. Very very bad.

As far as i was aware 6.0 was the home user version and had nothing to do with TVD suite... as 4.51 was just released for the corporate version under the TVD suite umbrella and so was sp1 but i could be wronge...
