While I understand that bashing Microsoft is a time-honored tradition, I don't think that all these negative reviews are justifiable.
Expression Web (v4) is a great coding and visual web building tool; actually much better, way faster, less bloated and much more stable than Adobe's Dreamweaver CS5.

I'm the happy owner of Expression Web 3.0.
I've got 4.0 and I've become very disappointed.
This soft is very slow in relation to 3.0. It’s just unbelievable how slow it is, since MS Office works very fast.
Can't see any improvements since 3.0

I think this program has gotten some undue bad reviews.

I used Dreamweaver for a long time to create websites. Nothing major, but internal corporate database front ends, and small public websites for businesses. This is certainly a worth competitor for Dreamweaver. It has (almost) all the features, and about half of the quirkiness. I like it much better. About the only thing i liked more about Dreamweaver was that it seemed a little easier to apply CSS styles to particular parts of the document.

I played with this new version 2.0 a bit, and I dont see any major differences yet. The one thing that pops out at me immediately is that the UI not matches my office 2007 theme (black/grey coloring) where ver 1.0 was always the blue theme.

Tried this and take Zridings point, its frontpage with a dress on. Good for the hobbyist, with CSS and ASP intergration on the whole very good. But, Microsoft is trying to phase FP Extensions out and this I am sorry to say relys on - amongst other things , FP Extns.

Good product but missed the boat with its sorry predessor hiding in its coded wings.

I'm stunned at how slow this program is, and how many nag screens there are for the trial version. It repeatedly asks for a product key several times before finally letting you get to work. For the most part, it's FrontPage 2003 with CSS features thrown in. The Table features are pretty incredible, I admit.

$99 upgrade from FrontPage; $299 by itself from Microsoft, full version. If you're working with CSS, there are other, better programs than this. But if you're wanting HTML, CSS, and ASP all in one program, then this will do as long as you live with it. It seems more geared to non-programmers like myself who want to build a nice little site rather than anything professional.

Not bad for free software. Lacks several features that the more powerful programs like Dreamweaver have. Can't even create image rollovers and the like let alone the more advanced stuff. Experienced webmasters should pass on this one.

DudeBoyz, you've completely missing the whole thing. So please stop trolling. Thank you.

MS at the top, again...what more can we ask for. Flawless integration with Visual Studio and ASP.NET framework, something dreamweaver can only dream of. And who would use this "bloatware" application which dreamweaver is nowadays anymore (and glueing more and more @$*@ with next version without a clue)... so welcome Expression tools!

An of course it will not be free, it will be a part of a new Visual Studio 9(Orcas).

DudeBoyz

DudeBoyz reviewed vBeta 1 on Sep 6, 2006

So wait - this is the BETA of the replacement for FrontPage 2003, but will no longer be free after the beta period, right?

Dreamweaver 8 just SLAYS FrontPage 2003 in code efficiency and does not rely on proprietary hosting extensions to work properly.

I'm not sure what the advantage of this app would be. Am I missing something?

It need many improvements.
Look at the Dreamweaver and also need more following the standard HTML and builtin things to make our work easier.

It also need to be able to work manual coding easier.

It also need to work without problems with any office version from Xp, 2003 and also the 2007.

like AntiochMedia I prefer to do my websites by code.
however from time to time I just want to knock up a page and have it done.

This does that.

I allways hated frontpage (because I think its garbage)
But this is definately not frontpage its something entirely new.

I'm a little worried about the uninstall process after reading other reviews so Im going to keep it on no-matter what.

I'm actually very impressed with the improvements over Frontpage 2003. This seems to be the replacement for that as FrontPage was not included with Office 2007 Beta 2 in any form. The css support in this program is something FrontPage has needed for awhile. The only thing I see missing is publishing to a frontpage server (which is somewhat confusing as it appears to be a replacement for FrontPage).

I'm new to design webbsites and I must say that I'm impressed as usuall regarding Microsoft generosity with letting us have such a incredible nice working piece of a program for free. That let me create CSS driven webb pages in an almost Wysiwyg invironment and I must say that I'm impressed how easy and powerfull it's. Thanks MS.

I'm a web developer who uses EditPad and Photoshop and an FTP client. I see no reason to switch to a WYSIWYG editor for myself.

I do, however, love testing software. I avidly dislike Dreamweaver's approach to web development and have always disliked Frontpage. Unless I'm being nieve and haven't really 'experienced' the competition, I would give this a positive review as I felt that the program itself was good for developers who like to manually code pages...

I'm now interested in checking out other software packages available...

Since this is still a Beta release will give a 2 for poor release standards of the product.
It installs it self in God knows where locations, part of it went to my D drive in MS Office other parts of the program have no idea where it went.

Once open program it had the looks of Dreamweaver which is good. I decided I would uninstall the program and not use it till another release came around.
This is were problem started.
I used the add/remove and no problem found program listed as they say on the web page and program was uninstalling when poof my PC shut down and restarted. When this happened Scandisk came up and was fixing and making duplicate files all over the place so was now worse of than before.

Make sure you have a backup program of some kind if going to run this one.
Saved by having a image.

"Pretty, and such, but having the 1st download corrupt is kinda silly for a big company like MS."

How is that their fault? A million things can happen between a fileserver and a client downloading from it.

Before I get into the app itself, I have to vent a point of frustration I have:

CAN MICROSOFT MAKE TWO APPS THAT INSTALL USEING THE SAME MECHANISM???????

God almighty. SQL 2005, VS.NET 2005, .NET runtime, Office 2007, IE7, MSN Messenger, and now the Expression crap. EVERY ONE uses a DIFFERENT installer interface. STUPID.

Now, on to the "app" itself. The best way to describe it would be to say it looks, smells and feels like a merge of Frontpage 2003 and the old Visual InterDev 6 UIs. That's it. In fact, they strangely removed the STYLE button from the Cell Properties form. Very odd. You have to select a cell style from the right-hand pane. STUPID v2.0. I'm not impressed, BUT, I will keep beating on it in case there's something nice I haven't found yet.

off to a bad start. a poor installer, doesn't ask you where you want to install it - I didn't want to install to my default c:\ drive!

BIG program for a web design app. but suprisingly quite good.

had a bit more of a chance to play with it. Not bad overall, The toolboxes etc on the left and right aren't autohiding, which is rubbish - they take up too much screen real-estate and aren't necessary all the time. (auto-hiding would definately help)

Site management, you have to create a new site - I can't just use a site/folder that I'm already working on =- I.e. I have to copy that site to another location (poor)

Not sure what this brings to the web dev table that Visual Studio Express, Dreamweaver, Topstyle Pro etc don't do as well or better, also at 200mb.. it's big. not quite sure why it needs to be so massive.

Still, in it's favour, it's NOT frontpage!

Pretty, and such, but having the 1st download corrupt is kinda silly for a big company like MS.

Also when you save a file after modifying it, it reverts to the default font. Thats just plain silly for any application, even a beta.

I had no problesm downloading or installing on Windows XP Pro SP2.

The download page has been moved on MS site -- here is the new link: http://www.microsoft.com...6fc6&DisplayLang=en

I've used MS FrontPage since ver. 1.1. Because of the extra panes in Expression, I had to increase the screen resolution to 1200x1000 in order to not have to scroll around my web page.

I like the split page view. I do a lot of hand coding and this is a very handy feature.

Tables and paragraphs are represented differently in Expression, however I did not feel that I was starting from scrach as I have in other non-MS programs.

This program will take a lot of exploring, however after updating several dozen web pages on a FrontPage enabled Windows server, I like much of what I see.

The only question I now have "is this a replacement to FrontPage or will this be a second offering (professional version) for those wishing more similar to Works vs Office?" as I've read elsewhere.

A "Featured Download" that doesn't work and isn't even available anymore..

I did manage to download this the other day when it was still available, but like everyone else said it doesn't work.

The installer starts up, asks you to accept the agreement, then starts extracting the files. Sometime while extracting it pops up with an error and that's as far as it goes.
