End user improvements include a streamlined interface, tabbed browsing, printing advances, improved search functionality, instant feeds (RSS), dynamic security protection, and more.

Internet Explorer provides improved navigation through tabbed browsing, web search right from the toolbar, advanced printing, easy discovery, reading and subscription to RSS feeds, and much more. It also provides security through a robust new architecture, security features that help defend against malicious software, and new ways to better protect against the theft of personal data from fraudulent websites. It has improved support for cascading style sheets, a rich RSS feeds platform, and robust tools for deploying and managing Internet Explorer 7 in large enterprise environments.

The Platform Preview is an early look at the Internet Explorer platform so some features are incomplete, some may change, and some may be added.

IE any number will never make. Chrome and Firefox out do IE even on a bad day. If it weren't for IE being bundled with MS OS, there would be no IE at all.

Slow to load, slow to close and sometimes it stays open in tsk mgr when you think it's closed. Other than that if you use windows it's difficult for the average user to simply remove it and use something else. After 30 yrs of coding I expect a lot more from it. Plus it loves ads, popups, and all the garbage that comes with the internet. Not a secure browser by any means. It just renders well is all I can say about it that's good. Unfortunately, that aint good enough these days. The ms os has this problem wherein if you are not using IE you will not be able to download some of their software. Pathetic really. My next version of the windows OS I use will not have IE at ALL.

I know this is still a platform preview, more to do with the underbelly of the yet to be released IE9, but based upon my experience from having used it, I will gladly rate it 5 stars. Microsoft is back in the game, and readying itself to play hardball.

This is a great version, have had no problems at all. For those of you who complain about it not working on old versions of window, get a life. How long to you actually believe Microsoft will support something that old. You all were told that support for such older OS's would stop and it has for the most part. Update and stop complaining.

Those who give this preview/beta a 1 because it doesn't work on almost 10 year old operating systems have serious issues to resolve.
XP is dead. You're beating a dead horse.
And anyone running 2003 R2 should not test beta browsers on it anyway. It's a server OS ffs - and if you're using it as a workstation OS today you need professional help.

That said .. Best browser from Microsoft ever. Importing adblock definitions work flawlessly if you want to do that. The HTML5 works as promised and it's a fast browser with a lot of stuff in it that people requested.
It's actually usable (even though I'm sticking with Firefox because of the extentions).

Ofcourse i don't install Hastalavista or that later crap of their os.... This show complete disrespect for customers that use XP. XP will be the last OS from Microsoft that i use....

Blaxima,
Unfortunately using w3schools as a baseline for determining OS share would be a very poor choice. The demographic that goes there is very skewed being both an open standards advocate AND specifically targetting web developers. I know I have quite often visited that site while on my Windows 7 machine, but from within a VM running windows XP (As I needed to look things up while testing with IE 6.0, or an older version of firefox). As such, I suggest you use a different source, one that better represents a wider demographic, and one that has more samples.

Here is a source with approximately 10 times the coverage that w3schools does: http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/

Windows 7 64 bit 30.32% +3.67%
Windows XP 32 bit 30.17% -2.82%
Windows Vista 32 bit 13.92% -0.09%
Windows 7 11.54% -0.53%
Windows Vista 64 bit 7.83% +1.08%
MacOS 10.6.3 64 bit 4.28% -1.03%
Windows XP 64 bit 0.71% +0.15%
MacOS 10.5.8 64 bit 0.70% -0.33%
Windows 2003 64 bit 0.33% +0.01%
Other 0.20% +0.02%

You should note that Windows 7 64-bit (30.32%) alone is the most popular OS platform, and if you include the 32-bit version as well (11.54%) it has a very significant lead.

bourgeoisdude, I don't know why you are complaining about the few people saying IE9 sucks because most of the complaints are on the lack of support for XP and that's probably because XP is the most used OS out there. It's market share is greater than ALL other OS's combined let alone Windows 7 and the ever dropping Vista. I wouldn't be surprised to see XP still have the largest market share by the time they are ready to role out WIndows 8 and by that time next to no one will have Vista.

http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_os.asp

EDIT @ KingMotley
I don't think using a gaming site gives a proper gage of overall usage

(IE 9 Technical Preview) First of all, this is not a fully functional browser, it is a technical preview as the description clearly states. It is designed for developers.

If you're wanting to see if the next version of Internet Explorer has what it takes to compete again, WAIT FOR THE BETA. This is absolutely positively not intended for use as a regular browser. Reviews that state how horrible this browser are just remind me of how many people don't read the descriptions of products before they download them.

...Anyway, I'm most impressed with the speed enhancements--this thing still bests the latest FireFox 4.0 Beta in the Sunspider tests. If only they'd release it sooner than 2011, Firefox might have some genuine competition from IE.

I agree totally with borisf98 that his is not yet up to snuff. Now while it is still in beta there may be things wrong. But why not they wait till at least it all works right. I like most of Microsoft products and always have, but I think they do themselves dishonor when they put out something like this beta or not.

What is the point of releasing a crippled preview? To brag about hardware acceleration? Guess what? Firefox 3.7 latest alpha beats IE9 with hardware acceleration and it is completely functional piece of software.

And no. I am not Microsoft hater. I am very happy with Windows 7 and newest Office.

It's pretty silly to design a browser that gets bundled with its operating system, then turn around and not let everyone that bought the operating system test out something new, especially something as important as a browser.

Leaving XP out when it's still being supported is ridiculous in itself. Microsoft actually thinks that Internet Explorer 8 is a good enough browser for XP? It can't even run gifs properly; not to mention running flash. Flash isn't even optimize in it and you're telling me that Microsoft is going to leave things like this just because some users still decide to stay on an older well working and still supported operating system? Wow and even people through the years that bought the operating system?

I guess being loyal is not even recognized anymore. Sorry Microsoft, but no matter how you look at it, this is a bad move.

Funny how every review on this page seems to be about Internet Explorer in general and not the IE9 Preview version that this page is about.

Anyway, I wish they'd add an address bar--I know that's alot to ask for a preview version, but still. I'm much more interested once the beta comes out. This is definitely the fastest version of IE and beats Firefox in all of the speed tests; by the time the full version comes out I predict FireFox will have beaten them again. That's really the biggest problem with it--the release cycle takes too friggen long. Microsoft has the capacity to come up with great stuff, they just don't want to put the manpower behind it.

Funny how I still hate IE. but when I got a new pc this week, I couldn't find it anywhere. I had already installed Firefox and made it my default browser. I even typed every combo of ie know to man in search, nothing. Was just trying to set up the settings on it for windows and other crap. Wasn't till a warranty link for my pc gave me the path of the stupid thing. Anyway, I did download this IE9 platform. WTF, its not even a browser. These releases are sort of a blank view of what I think the new browser is. At least Firefox lets uses download there software and fool around with it before the final release. But than again, good ol IE isn't open sourse...

"hard drives are about to
upgrade from the 512K format
to 4G format by the end of
January 2010 which will make
XP and older Windows OS
versions inoperable"

A totally baseless claim without any substantiation in fact ! Just as stupid
as his claim that Mac's use less energy than PC's. ( Especially now that
Apple computers now run on the ~same~ CPU, hard drives, and USB
peripherals ! ) Only real difference between a Mac and a PC is that you
pay more to get less with Apple. Apparently being fashionable and trendy
is worth the extra cost for some, though.

@ Jtaylor83, your a idiot. Energy hogs? You do realize that PCs and MACs use the same hardware. Also processors and hard drives run much cooler and more efficiently compared to a couple years ago. Sayings a PC consumes more power then a MAC and that's why you should purchase a MAC is absolutely ridiculous. Don't post comments unless you know what your talking about.

Jtaylor83

Jtaylor83 reviewed v1.9.7.7.66.6000 Platform Preview on May 5, 2010

Folks, the reason why Microsoft won't make IE9 compatible with XP is because hard drives are about to upgrade from the 512K format to 4G format by the end of January 2010 which will make XP and older Windows OS versions inoperable. This is also the reason why Microsoft wants to end their support for XP earlier than its' projected date April 2014. So yes, it is time to upgrade, better yet try investing into a new desktop PC that supports 4K format hard drives. However, newer PCs are becoming energy hogs, which will spike up your electric bill. Suggestion is try getting a Mac OSX and be a Mac user. Will IE 9 work on the OSX? Try it yourself.

@nlist/others: Note that this won't upgrade your existing Internet Explorer installation to IE9. It is mostly a preview of the browser changes for developers to utilize. While it can be used to browse the web, Microsoft intentionally made it difficult for end-user consumers to do that by forcing you to use the 'Open' dialog instead of an address bar.

As for a rating, I'll give it a 3 because I like that Microsoft is advancing the browser, but I feel they are behind the curve (as usual). They seem to let their software lie dormant until a competitor emerges to force their hand. At which time, they update their software and (often) run the competitor into the ground.

With Google's massive market exposure and aggressive pushing of Chrome, I expect their browser to continue to achieve market share, even after IE9 is released. IE9 will, however, reduce the rate at which this occurs. As for Firefox, it will probably (sadly) start to lose user base as Chrome eats into its market share. Firefox will soon only be appealing for those who need extended functionality not available in Chrome, those paranoid about their privacy with Chrome, and/or those existing users who don't want to make a change. That said, Firefox is great and it is a shame that there may not be a great place for it in this next generation of browsers.

I actually feel relieved that I won't have to bother with IE9 on my XP OS, like 75% of current Windows users. Meanwhile, Firefox, Chrome and Opera all work perfectly on our not-modern operating system. 56 on Acid3? Nice job Microsoft! It just took you a decade to achieve that score.

Shame on Microsoft for not having a version for Windows XP.
Not everyone can afford to buy a computer that can use Vista or Windows 7.
Don't tell me to go get a new one and put it on my credit card, many people can't afford to do that. With so many people unemployed it's not time to do such a thing.
If I put anything on my credit card it will be food or a utility bill.
Shame on the people that have money to toss out the window that don't have a clue of the struggle of the middle class & poor people that are simply trying to get by in this bad time.
Shame on Microsoft.
Shame on people that simply don't care.

You that are complaining about no XP support.

It is TIME TO UPGRADE!

You are running almost a 10 year old OS with older technology that can't utilize newer components or frameworks that Windows 7 or Vista have.

I have all my PC's running Windows 7 and am quite pleased, I would not recommend Vista but definitely Windows 7.

Or you can run a flavor of Linux and then complain that IE 9 won't run on Linux =P.

Any way as for the review IE9 HTML 5 rocks.
