Publisher's Description
Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool checks your computer for infection by specific, prevalent malicious software (including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and helps to remove the infection if it is found.
This tool will help to remove specific, prevalent malicious software from infected systems. Because computers can appear to function normally when infected, Microsoft advises you to run this tool even if your computer seems to be fine. In addition to using this tool, you should use an up-to-date antivirus product to help protect your computer from other malicious software.

MRT is a tool which runs "Once a month" During Win Updates. Otherwise, It lays dormant unless it is "called Up". It is a useful tool "ONLY" If your system has ground to a halt. (Do Not) rely on MRT/MSERT alone.
You need
(1) A "good" A/v which is Highly configurable.
(2) A "second opinion" like M/ware-Bytes for Instance.
(3) A Nifty tool to keep at hand, TDSSKiller.
- Launch TDSSK: Allow "updates" & then go into (change parameters). Some Items are ticked by default. Also TICK (Detect TDLFS file system).
You "MAY" get a suprise in some cases..!!
Your A/v should be running at all times. Other tools should be used in conjunction with your A/v, but only on a "call-Up" basis. Too many tools monitoring your system in "Real Time" = False positives, & Crashes.
(BUT THAT IS UP TO THE USER)
Still 3* for being an Alternative (Tool)..... "Keep Safe" .. ^_^

Follow this link & Directly below the Big Blue "Download Now" Button.
("Select your Version" link). Click = (32bit - 64bit). Note 10day Expiry.
Usually between 70Mb-90Mb, Portable, Fairly quick scan. Double click & run
from wherever you selected to download. Same UI as if you called up MRT.
Not the best by any imagination, It'll sniff a "Rootkit" among other Bogeys.

Music4Ever,
The reason why Windows Update is slowed down when the Malicious Software Removal Tool has been checked is because the tool is performing a quick scan of your system in the background during the update process.
Still a good tool to run monthly for catching the most common malware.

BTW although I don't use MSE the detection rates are now pretty good.

I applaud Microsoft's introduction into the security market with this and MSE. This tool basically will take care of any essential threat that need be pushed out due to the infection rate, or implications.

yeh not sure how this got a 5 star in voting, considering Windows hassles you until you install some kind of anti-virus kit to deal with what the Malicious Software Removal Tool is meant to also address? Waste of time. I'm only writing because I DID NOT download this tool, yet 6 mysteriously named directories appeared in my system, all containing this exe! Now, I wonder, how did that happen? I'm sure I never consented to unsolicited software downloads even if it is from MS, but I was sceptical before running it until my own anti-virus/mal-ware took a look at it. Utter waste of time: We need minus star ratings.

briant reviewed v3.12 on Oct 21, 2010
I would have to say this is another typical poorly thought out product by some navel-gazing geeks in Redmond and whatever benefits there might be are not worth the hassle.
After 3 days of scanning my PC (without letting me select or even know what parts of the PC were going to be scanned), my only option was a checkbox saying 'Heal' and a 'Continue' button. Clicking that button prompted me with a warning that files might be harmed by this process and continuing THAT immediately started a process with again, zero feedback other than the squirrels were running on my machine.
Any other commercial grade software you use for virus checking etc will at least show you what files were infected by what. What kind of moron thinks up this type of user experience? At least there should be a 'find out what was infected' selection.
The irony of it is that after clicking the 'cancel' button on the 'healing process, the 'Healing in process' dialog box is still onscreen and you're locked in a loop of 'cancel' - 'are you sure'? Gotta use Task Manager to kill it.
Linux and Apple are going to continue to eat MS' lunch !

As a hands off tool works great, doesn't
find problems that I don't have: That is,
My box is free of malicious software that
I don't want, it agrees and doesn't scream
that the cookie that autologs me in to my
home page is a security threat that will
kill me and my credit rating and my little
dog Toto.
As a hands on tool, one huge flaw.
On this laptop which is running on the
mains (Battery is over yonder) I plugged
in all of my USB storage and told it to
scan everything.
It seems to scan the system in alphabetic
order (c and d are the permanent drives)
and for the first about three days didn't
report problems.
Last night it reported finding six threats,
and now after about six days it is done
and shows four bad things found.
It doesn't say where, But I assume that
it is in news:alt.binaries.pictures.railroad
where I go ctrl+a, a. (Forte Agent command:
select all, save files in selected posts.)
It's not saying where the problem is? Huge
flaw for the types of people who play with
beta s'ware.
A five for not saying harmless is harmful,
a finger for not saying _which_ files it thinks
can install malware

Shall I roll the drums? It's the first time I hear this joke... today.
Let me point out that this is NOT an antivirus, it removes malware. I find it to do this job decently, and since it is useful and is offered free of charge by Microsoft to keep Windows snappy, I can only praise it.
About Windows as an OS, people who use Office at work could always use Linux and OpenOffice at home. But this discussion is irrelevant and off topic.
Undesired Username reviewed v2.5 on Dec 9, 2008
Yeah, there are things that can "hold you hostage" to Windows. Things like needing to run the same platform at home and at work for compatibility. Things like the fact that other platforms don't let you run the software you want (e.g. games).
Sativarg reviewed v2.3 on Oct 14, 2008
More info here
The installer that you get from here or manually from Microsoft starts in a interactive mode. The tool' when activated in interactive mode allows you to choose
Performing a full scan
A full scan performs a quick scan and then a full scan of the computer, regardless of whether malicious software is found during the quick scan. This scan can take several hours to complete because it will scan all fixed and removable drives. However, mapped network drives will not be scanned.
How the MMSRT differs from an antivirus product
The Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool does not replace an antivirus product. It is strictly a post-infection removal tool. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you install and use an up-to-date antivirus product.
The Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool differs from an antivirus product in three key ways:
• The tool removes malicious software from an already-infected computer. Antivirus products block malicious software from running on a computer. It is significantly more desirable to block malicious software from running on a computer than to remove it after infection.
• The tool removes only specific prevalent malicious software. Specific prevalent malicious software is a small subset of all the malicious software that exists today.
• The tool focuses on the detection and removal of active malicious software. Active malicious software is malicious software that is currently running on the computer. The tool cannot remove malicious software that is not running. However, an antivirus product can perform this task.

There are probably more PC's out there running without any antivirus on them than there with AV, and even on the ones that do have AV there are still a huge number of those that never get updated. And prompt for a restart, badly after restart i cannot login because it shows that my password is incorrect.I don't know what is happened.I don't try to change the password. But i cannot login.I tried many times but failed.
One thing i am feeling lucky is that there is about 6Gb unpartitioned space in my hard disk, where i installed XP again without erasing the old one and in the search for retrieving the password.I am sure that i dont change the password.
But how it changed automatically.
There is a chance that the ecrypyted file is infected.
But the things is that it shows my username correctly.

Don't try to blame Microsoft... they're allowed to set their prices as high as they please, competitors (like Linux) are allowed to set THEIR prices accordingly (like FREE) to compete the best.
I'm not sure how good this tool works (I make it a practice to not do stupid things, thus flooding my computer with viruses etc etc), but at the very least its Windows Update Critical status will ensure that Joe Clueless gets a virus scan this month, even if he doesn't know what that means.

People are rating this bad just because it doesn't run on pirated copies of Windows? Yeah, and Corvettes suck because I keep getting thrown in jail after I steal one. Gimme a break.
Like McAfee's Stinger, this little utility doesn't attempt to catch thousands of malware programs, only the most common and serious. Unlike McAfee's Stinger, this tool isn't biased towards just viruses; all types of malware are handled equally. Early versions were simply a crutch for users who were unwilling to use real antimalware, but recent versions have been capable of removing some of the most sophisticated rootkit-protected threats.
Although Microsoft's tool is packaged similar to a hotfix and therefore "looks" like it is installing, it doesn't really install anything except a registry entry (to prevent Windows Updates and Automatic Updates from repeatedly downloading the same version). It simply runs, cleans whatever it finds, then exits. Nothing remains running (which also means that you don't get any ongoing protection).

But nightmare came after I restart the pc, I can't boot into windows, there a blue screen being shown and automatically restart. This process repeat again and again. The only solution I found was reinstall windows for 2 times. The first time my windows being corrupted, I thought was caused by installation of Visual Web Developer Express. Finally I found that the problem was caused by the Malicious Software Remover tool. So becareful when apply Windows Update, don't let it run at background, at least let it prompt for install after download. It better to check the list of windows updates. I am not anti Microsoft. Most of the viruses, worms, and trojans in the AV databases are no longer in the wild. That is what MSRT scans for, the most popular ITW malware.
It is for the 90% of people who have no AV software but do have automatic updates turned on, and as a "first tool" to run during a cleaning operation.

How do I know this? Because, for one thing, it doesn't make sense. For another--and to totally make a joke out of the warnings that others shouldn't run this software--Microsoft issues this software as part of Windows Update, to MILLIONS of customers!
Yes, they've screwed the pooch in the past, but that issue, with this software--it just doesn't make sense. Please save the drama for your mama.

this sw hasn't caused me problems, but I only installed and run it once, just to test it; still, there's no guarantee it can not cause problems in some cases - I wouldn't be surprised if it did, it's just another piece of beta sw
so, mr zridling, if a fellow tester posts his experiences, then THANK the poor guy, don't bash him below the dirt

I have an WD 120gb External Hard Drive, which I store my graphic files on(about 30gb worth). I have several adware and spyware programs and Virus Protection and Firewall and they never showed any bad stuff on this drive. I installed the MS program as it was on the Windows Update Site when it first appeared in January. It totally corrupted the drive and I lost all 30gb's of graphic files and projects. XP restore could not do anything. Luckly WD had a tool that enabled me to recover most of it. I still lost the most recent files I had worked on and edited earlier that day. So be forwarned,DO NOT INSTALL THIS PROGRAM,it destroys without notifying first or gives options like quartine first. There is plenty of other good freeware that does the same job without any problems.

Creates more problems than it solves. I already have anti-virus software but I ran this anyway. I thought, "what can it hurt?" The one thing that had me worried a little before I used is that it says that it will automatically remove the infections. Thinking of how microsoft often has bugs in it's software I was thinking that it might automatically remove other files that are not infectious by mistake. I wish I was wrong about that but unfortunately not. After running it didn't find anything. Later in the day I tried to install software but they were all aborted due to "16 bit Windows Subystem - Data error (cyclic redundancy check) :\windows\system32\autoexec.net"
It had removed my autoexec.nt file
Ugh, just something annoying that I didn't need.

Windows XP users may get the latest version through Windows Update. To have the newest versions automatically delivered and installed as
soon as they are released, set the Automatic Updates feature to Automatic.
Note The version of this tool delivered by Windows Update runs in the background and then deletes itself. If you would like to run this tool more than once a month, use the version on this Web page or install the version that is available in the Download Center.
mjm01010101 reviewed v1.2 on Mar 9, 2005
Doesn't seem to hurt anything. Is not part of automatic updates... yet. Can't see the harm in this tool if it helps the net and performance overall.
The virus and malware writers are winning-- there are more viruses released nowadays than ever before-- So I think Microsoft is ultimately doomed by their own success, but it'll be fun watching from the sidelines...
mcm reviewed v1.0 on Jan 16, 2005
I gather the intention of this tool is to be downloaded automatically by Windows Updates and check your computer for the most common viruses in the background. Then if it finds any alert the user and guide them through its removal. This will no doubt be updated every time a new big virus hits.
This tool only really has use therefore for those who don't run antivirus software. Also useful for system repairers like myself who might only want to do a quick basic antivirus scan over a computer without waiting hours from antivirus software.

Does what it is suppose to. I don't know why people expect these virus removal programs to detect "everything" because no program like that exists. The vast majority of the signatures of every single AV vendor only detect malware, and do not remove them for you beyond deleting the files, or simple file cleaning. It is indeed a good step, perhaps the only thing Microsoft can offer for free without breaking anti-trust laws.
TechSys reviewed v1.0 on Jan 11, 2005
This seems like a good start for Microsoft getting into the Spyware/antivirus business. This program doesn't have all the definitions of every malicious software that is out there, but give it time. So far it only scans for 8 definitions.

Make no mistake, this tool is meant to supplement your AntiVirus software, not replace it.
It doesn't install itself, it simply executes and then exits on completion. It is currently available via Windows Update for WinXP users.
The benefit of this is obvious. A massive percentage of virus infection occurs on home users that don't have a clue and/or don't have AV software (or don't update it or run it regularly). A large portion of these users will be using WinXP. Once a month, when these people run WindowsUpdate (hopefully they at least do that!) the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool will run on their system and detect and remove the more common viruses.
