Publisher's Description

Virtual Server 2005 provides a virtualization platform that runs most major x86 operating systems in a guest environment, and is supported by Microsoft as a host for Windows Server operating systems and Windows Server System applications. Its comprehensive COM API, in combination with the Virtual Hard Drive (VHD) format and support for virtual networking, provide administrators complete scripted control of portable, connected virtual machines and enable easy automation of deployment, and ongoing change and configuration.

Additionally, its integration with a wide variety of existing Microsoft and third-party management tools allows administrators to seamlessly manage a Virtual Server 2005 R2 environment with their existing physical server management tools. A wide array of complementary product and service offerings are available from Microsoft and its partners to help businesses plan for, deploy, and manage Virtual Server 2005 R2 in their environment.

True it does not work on XP Home but why would it? Anyone running XP Home is very unlikely to want this anyway. This is quite different from Virtual PC and is not intended for running legacy or current desktop operating systems, it's for running server operating systems only. There's no emulated sound card or many other features of virtual PC, but there are many advanced features that only server administrators are likely to need or understand.

WARNING: Will not run on XP Home, don't waste your time if you have XP Home. Go get VMWare's free offering instead.

Thanks, to VMware making the first move with releasing their Server edition for free, Microsoft now follows suit. Hopefully, we will see some stiff competition in an area that hasn't seen much innovation in a long time. iSCSI support in VS2005 is the first shot across the bow!
