I actually beta tested this as I have for some years & was glad to see the back of it, yet again the UI changes are unnecessary - Norton is once again losing the plot, compare the install size of Norton @ 280 meg against ESET SS @ 78 & ESET for example is by far the better product, you can do much better than Norton ~

Good protection, it runs very light. Do not slows down PC.
I do not have any problems with this NIS.
After trying
1. Kaspersky internet security 2013 (partialy loads webpages, slows down copying files from HDD to HDD)
2. McAfee internet security 2013 (blocks access to my archive disks)
3. AVG internet security 2013 (blocks IPTV even application is marked to pass)

the most of all I liked Norton internet security 2013. Good job!

NIS2013 is a great continued version of itself. For those here who just automatically loath anything Norton too bad you're missing a great program. I've tried many other brands from Kaspersky, AVG, Avast, Webroot etc., but I seem to always return to NIS. I just have less issues with it and it protects 3 of my PCs just fine.

Norton is very good and bugs should have been sorted in final.

2013 is like line from 2010-2011-2012.
Fast, easy to use. Install and forgot. Norton since 2010 has changed all lines of his products. Now this is one of the fastest AV software on the market. Before 2010 it was pain in the ass, but now try by your self.

Input Overload you are absolutely correct.

Ever since Symantec overhauled Norton Internet Security in 2009 it has been in my opinion the best. Don’t judge this software if you haven’t tried it since then.

Bala7 doesn’t seems to think Norton is very good which his opinion. However his opinion doesn’t hold water since he believes personal attacks help him prove his point without facts to back his opinion up.

Practically every Anti-Virus and Firewall test I see rates Norton highly with consistency.

I do work in IT & have never had anything from Symantec, this is the UK & maybe things are different here.

Regarding being a time served beta tester, what a laugh, no I'm not BUT: - As your fellow countryman Bob Dylan said - 'You Don't Need a Weatherman To Know Which Way The Wind Blows'

Norton is as good as Av's get, though as I'm always trying new ideas @ the moment I'm running Webroot SmartSecurity, a cloud based AV based on Prevx & it's rather good.

That does not mean Norton has suddenly become rubbish as it hasn't. I recently installed it on 3 PC's for a client without problem. Good software far removed from what it was 4 years ago - Move with the times you Luddites.

@Bala7, I'm interested & intrigued what security do you deploy?

To verify the above as you have a somewhat doubting nature I give you the auspicious privilege of viewing this PC desk.....

So, you guys that seem to be the experts here and really hate Norton what is the best one out there? I've tested probably as many as you and I teach in IT, but I don't consider myself an expert in Security software. I've used NIS for a few years now and I haven't had any severe viruses in that time frame. Granted I don't visit a lot of sites that would give me viruses and such I think it's work fairly well, but I'm open to other suggestions. I've used in addition to NIS, Prevx. I now see that Webroot who bought Prevx has now released SecureAnywhere which is built around Prevx.

Input Overload:
By your own admission, you are not a trained beta tester but an electrical engineer. I reverse engineer/audit code for a living and we conduct penetration testing all day long. And I'm telling you 'real' hacker do not distribute their malware until it is certain their code can first corrupt Norton, McAfee and AVG.

Despite your imbecilic retorts I do not believe you can possibly work in IT without Symantec kickbacks. But such is the power of belief. Additionally, I have never seen Norton clean even the most rudimentary rootkit. But who cares, as long as you believe.

I have the 2012 edition of NIS running on my laptop and desktop PCs. The upgrade process from NIS 2011 was painless. If your 2011 license has not yet expired, NIS 2011 can upgrade itself to 2012 over the wire for free. Of course you need to purchase a new license to extend the expiration date.

I have not noticed any system slowdown with NIS 2010, 2011 or 2012 and have been virus free for years. For those that care, NIS plays nicely with MalwareBytes and AdMuncher.

Long ago I used F-Prot (DOS) for my preferred AV, then NOD32 which at the time was the best bar none. Later I used Esets Security program with Firewall etc for some years & it was fit & forget.

Many months ago I Beta Tested NIS 2011. Having been a long time hater of all things Norton - (Since the demise of the original Norton Utilities on 3 floppy's - They have produced bloated uninstall-able garbage)

I found it hard to believe it was good.. However after reading many reviews & personal research it seemed Norton had changed big time. Several independent reviews put it in front of Eset who in my opinion have been asleep on their laurels for some time.

So.. I decided to use NIS 2011, without any doubt it was brilliant with very little impact on resources even on my old Dell 620 Lappy as I bought 3 subscriptions at the same time for a very good price. Today I updated to NIS 2012, it uses even less resources on this newish DELL Desktop running 7 Pro, & is in my opinion, brilliant.

Memory use is even lower & this PC reacts even better. It is in my opinion NIS is the best there is bar none. And as I have had NIS running here on 3 PC's without any issues whatsoever that adds weight to my opinion. Oh & I've tried about all the AV's there are, imaging back to a clean install before trying another. I also run the full versions of Malwarebytes & Prevx. And as a backup 'Hitman Pro'.

If you still feel Norton products are bloated garbage, sorry but you are living in the past & if you are unable to change that opinion despite empirical evidence this makes you unfortunately a bigot, & more fool you…

'My assessment is and always will be: Norton, McAfee and Trend Micro are for computer illiterate users. Those that are powerusers....' - An example of a grade one bigot & someone who believes they are a wait for it... 'A Power User'.. Wow! I wonder how I get to be a ‘Power User’…. What a plonker.

@Bala... At least we had an empire: I work each day in Comms rooms & have forgot far more than you with ever know RE: IT. You have an opinion & stick to it regardless of any change, I suppose you also think the world is flat?

To be frank you are an idiot. Move with the times - 'That things can & will change is the only constant there is'. - Einstein.

The ability to adapt & change is one of the most useful personality traits there is.You possess neither... I used to detest with a vengeance Norton, big-time. You still do, I realise that NIS is the best there, tried & tested.

D I c k h e a d.

BTW, I love being a Brit. Put that in your pipe & smoke it....

('My assessment is and always will be’) - The mark of a true idiot...What you believed 20 years ago you still do & always will - That defeats logic)

BTW RE: 'Symantec', I have worked for **** in Houston & lived in Corpus/Austin/San-Antoine, TX, but never had anything to do with Symantec. I'm a self-employed Electronic Engineer, & self-taught IT specialist.over the past 17 years. And I'm bloody good.

Checkout - http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk The largest circulated PC Mag in the UK who conducted Beta trials on NIS 2011. the people who did the trial have been using the forum for years as have II.Most of us that tested NIS were VERY sceptical as was I, we ended up eating humble pie.

6 months testing on over 200 machines ha Ha.You live in a dream come fantasy world. BTW I am a Power User, with an incredibly fast Fibre net connection.

@XXXXXXX
You claim to be a beta tester of v.19 or 2012 edition yet flaws inherited from 2009 through 2012 have never been fixed. Norton continues to disregard user preferences in their settings menu. Turn some annoying settings off and Norton will not comply.

My assessment is and always will be: Norton, McAfee and Trend Micro are for computer illiterate users. Those that are powerusers or Pro's > Norton is a virus in that it takes over you machine and makes the user a slave. This is not how technology is suppose to work.

@Input Overload
Leave it to you Brits to have such limited horizons. Is it any wonder you lost your empire? Read what other knowledgeable betanews readers have to say ... http://betanews.com/2011...rotection-less-overhead/

How many security suites have you tested? No short term assessment but at least 6 months worth of experimenting? I have tested a dozen security solutions on at least 300 individual machines (not VM's) and can draw one over-arching conclusion. The REAL bad guys do not release their malware before they are 100% certain that Norton or McAfee defenses can be breached.

Please do not confuse a very aggressive marketing campaign with security. Norton or McAfee come bundled with many pc's from OEM's in additions to endless dollars spent for favorable reviews. As is the case in our image obsessed societies, your truth is only skin deep although I suspect you to be an employee of Symentec either today or sometime in the past.

Fast, very low on resources. Anyone that has actually used it will also come to that conclusion.
People who have not used 2012, 2011, 2010 or 2009 will not know. Versions prior to 2009 caused Norton bad rep, and at that time rightly so.

As a qualified tech I totally endorse Norton 2012, well worth the protection.

HeilNizar, I used Eset for many years until I found Norton NIS was a lean fast Firewall/AV/Anti-Spyware suite that to be honest is streets in front of Eset Smart Security I used for years & before that NOD32.

Norton has turned some total crap out these last few years but they have learnt the lesson. it updates in real time, up to 200 updates a day & u never know.

Eset is loosing the plot & had some really bad write-ups lately putting it behind free software. try NIS, you wont be disappointed. With coupons I got 3 NIS Suites for a quarter of what Eset wanted.

Eset better pull something out of the bag as they have lost a customer here to a better faster cheaper AV suite.

Unfortunately I've used Norton Internet Security for 6 years and the only version I ever liked was the 2008 version, the rest have given me nothing but problems. False positives, software bugs, bloatware, annoying nag screens, bad tech support and high prices are all true. Not this year.

Symantec is one of only a few software company that actually bills your credit card automatically once your product has expired and the only way around that is to go to their website before the product expires and disable Automatic Renewal. Not to mention that a month before your product expires they nag you into buying a new subscription and sometimes even require you to re-activate your product. Why would I pay $50 for a "Internet Security Suite" when all I need is an Anti-Virus and Firewall? Say what you want about Microsoft, but at least they offer Microsoft Security Essential and the Windows 7 Firewall for Free. If you hate Microsoft for whatever reason or want something with a firewall included then go with Comodo Internet Security which is also free or buy a cheap router with Hardware SPI Firewall.

Anyone claiming that Norton has a significantly higher detection rate than these free products or their special features will keep your computer safe is being paid to lie. Their just a greedy snake oil software company that deserves to go out of business and their product is just a polished you know what. If what I'm saying makes sense and you aren't listening to people like Pkshadow that are bent over backwards to get you to buy this thing and too stupid to see that the person he criticized for "ranting and raving" actually gave it a positive review, then do like I did and check out the alternatives, free or otherwise. 2.4 Rating and 389 people can't be wrong.

Pkshadow

Pkshadow reviewed v2011 18.1.0.37 on Sep 8, 2010

Some GUI changes as usuall that are not attractive or user friendly and am sure the beta testers are going why did they not listen to me.

As a Firewall and a AV program it still sits in the top 3 and deserves to be there due to low false positives, immediate action on files (lol..cracks/key generators get toasted quick).

Program has continued from the 2010 version of being light on resources by scanning most used files so it does not rescan them unless there are changes and these files are your most commen programs and or the OS files so scans are shorter and less memory usage.

For idiots like rickbtx ranting or is it raving about above is a joke!
For other comments yes it does nag you to renew subscription a month before it expires and it does want you to buy from Symantec but if you work it right on your buying like I have then your expire date is near when other sources offer NIS on sale with 3 PC licenses for 1/2 the price (40bucks CDA) so give that a thought as to when to buy and you still get a year subscription and a automatic update to a newer version when it is available as per me as a week ago I was using 2010 and am no running 2011.

Tech support has a program to connect and try and fix any problems over the internet before you talk to someone and it usually fixes a problem.
For further problems tech support is there like any other program with good days and bad days in India.

There is NO slow down of internet browsing unless maybe you use IE......lol!
In which case I can see why due to all the security problems of that junk and being a uncompatable to web standards browser.

Lots of programs have a seperate uninstaller and it is good to get rid of remnants pf older Norton programs and or left overs for a cleaner install.
It solves possible registry problems.

I would suggest the poster has a Windows problem if it does not allow a Restore.

All programs have a toolbar these days or you can d/load one like Mcafee's or there are a few other AV companies that have a d/load also that check web sites and do google ratings of security for your searchs.

To the point; this program still rates a 5 as being in the top 3 AV/Firewall programs and if you are going to buy then buy this one as there is no learning curve needed and it works better than the other top 2.

Regards

If some are going to use Av- Comparatives as a benchmark then I suggest you look at all the tests and not cherry-pick the ones that fit your perception. I don't use Norton but here are some of the results:
1)Main Test- Feb. 2010- Norton 2010= 3 stars. this rating includes prevention, false positives, and speed.
2) Removal- While we would like not to get infected, if we do do we want a product that does a good job at Removal. Here are the results of the the Oct. 2009 test (the latest): Norton again achieves a 3 star rating and is only one of 3 that achieve a good rating on both removal of the infection and the junk left over. Notice that none of the ones, even those adored on this site achieved a "very good" rating on this test. I would like to see Av update their results.

Like the reviewer below me, I remove this on every computer I fix. This bloatware has caused headaches for so many people its not funny.

I did a little testing with a version of NIS last year. I tried at least 70 different programs on test system and logged how they ran (loading time, stability, etc.).

I installed NIS and repeated the tests. At least 30 were slow. A good 20 of the 70 were unstable. A few didn't work at all (mostly failing to connect to the internet or to access files). Turning off the NIS didn't help.

Other notes include boot time nearly tripling and the typical failure to uninstall properly.

Yuck! Wish it would die already..

I remove Norton Anti-Virus / Firewall products from 10,000+ PCs a year for at least that last 5 years. I do this for free!! I hate Norton!

In fact if you are reading this and can't figure out how to get rid of this bloatware send me a quick email. I'm easy to find. Google me already! Drop the second 2 at the end of my screen name. And I will gladly help you, for free!!, get rid of this crap once and for all.

Anyhow. Every custom I removed this crapware for was a paying Norton customer (not by choice really, they thought they had to pay, as in it came with their PC and thought they had no choice but to buy year after year).

All are much happier now with either no anti-virus/firewall (as in they really don't need one since they are very low risk user (not using IE, and pretty much just use computer for email and work) and behind a router).

Or they are now using a free alternative such as Microsoft Security Essentials.Which I highly recommend.

I haven't tried a Norton product on my system since Norton AntiVirus 12/13 or whatever it was called. I haven't tried version 2009, but I have heard it is really good and runs extremely fast.

Well I just installed Norton Internet Security 2010 and I will be replacing Comodo Firewall and Kaspersky 2009 on my machine. NIS2010 is very fast and is non-intrusive. It installs in 2 minutes! and does not need a reboot, you almost never see it running, it scans extremely fast, and it has a few very nice features.

Norton 2010 scores very good on AV-Comparatives - http://www.av-comparatives.org/

One of the few that scored ADVANCED+ and is in the top 3 in terms of scan speed.

Great job Symantec. Please keep improving for Norton 2011, make it even more faster!

Absolutely a great product.
Very light on system resources, infact the lightest I have ever used.
It even uses less than Eset, which was a pleasant surprise.

I now use this as my main AV/Firewall product, a great replacement from Eset that I had used for years, but ditched as they can't be bothered to sort some small windows 7 compatibility issues out - you just don't need a complacent company like that.

not sure how CyberDoc999 can call it bloated, perhaps a sheltered life from what bloat is out there. (And no I don't work for Norton - I'm a qualified independent IT Professional)

All around good protection, light on resources. Along with my main PC I even have it running on a old acer 240, Windows 7, 512 Ram with no issues.

I have tried nearly every other AV suite out there and wasted so much money trying to prove to myself which was the best. Before 2009 Norton was a little iffy but since NIS 2009 it has been terrific. I have friends call me all the time with virus or worm problems and they are always using some other AV other then Norton. If you can’t install it, then you don’t know what the hell you are doing in the first place! I just upgraded 5 systems in my home from NIS 2009 to NIS 2010 in about 30 minutes. There are people out there that love to hate Norton/Symantec and have Norton derangement syndrome. Get over it! When I have my first issue I will be the first to post it here, until then don’t trust your system to anyone else.

Well same old crap... to you at Symantec, you are for us customers, we are not for Symantec.

To all at Beta News, if you install this, don´t forget to have a "total removal progarm" on your computer.

You might not like the program and will get almost nut, when try to take away the files that Norton have placed in the registry.

I´m using NOD32, now in a 64-bit environment, earlier in the 32-bit version.
Never a problem, a customer support that can help you with what so ever.
It´s a very small program, yet it win almost all test on Earth.

Seem like the reason why Norton try to reduce the program size, and the downloads. 160 mb as a download for an upgrade is in parity with Microsoft.

But for heavens sake this is a anti virus program, not the OS.

I hardley believe I will ever try Norton again.

People who cannot get this to work do not know what they're doing. Norton had serious issues back before 2009 and I didn't use them for quite a few years, but once I tried 2009 I was sold. Pro: seems NIS/NAV is no longer bloated enough to stall a new c2d (running oem vista).
Con: blocked two pcs on lan. I didn't know it was NIS causing this, so took a while to drill into and find the bad setting. (these "full" security suites suffer complexly *nested* UIs.)
uninstalled NIS (then hijackthis to kill one remaining bit of debris in registry). using comodo3 + avira av.

"We are sorry that we are unable to process your request for Symantec beta products at this time. Symantec screens orders to ensure Symantec does not export products in breach of government regulations. As part of the screening process, your request has been cancelled at this time for one of the following reasons:
There is a temporary export restriction from the country of origin to the destination country"

And I'm not from one of those countries the US would have export restrictions to. Tried downloading from anonymous US proxies but still doesn't work. What gives?

Anyways, this is silly. It's just a free, beta version. They're not selling or "exporting" anything. Why should there be any restrictions? This makes no sense at all.

This new version of Norton Internet Security is significantly faster than it's previous versions. However, when I decided to scan my entire computer with Viruses using it's "In-depth" scan feature, Norton finished scanning my computer for about 24-49 hours.

I then decided to download ESET 4. I scanned my computer using the in-depth scan feature. The scanning only took 30 minutes, and it has additional 16 viruses that Norton did not foudn.

Great security software. Fast, low on the resources, easy to use, solid firewall, generally unintrusive. The only reason I'm giving this only four stars is its nagging and agressive removal method. Once a file has been branded malware by NIS it will keep bugging you to remove it even when you don't want it to or add it to the exception list.

2008 was good, 2009 is excellent. Finally Norton have listened to their customers and developed a simple security product that is also fairly light on system resources. After hating on Norton for many years (2004-2007) it's once again a decent product that I can recommend, particularly for slower machines.

My only gripe is it can quite difficult to configure if you know what you're doing. It's advanced settings are somewhat limited. But to be fair, that's not the target market here.

eclipsingdivinity

eclipsingdivinity reviewed v2009 (16.1.0.33) on Dec 3, 2008

I have been lightly testing Norton 2009 for a couple of days. My experience has been generally positive about the software. It's fast, easy on the eyes and just the right amount of features and depth. It prevents infections without a hitch (sometimes forgetting to tell you) and its firewall is top notch.

However no product is perfect and the same applies to NIS 2009. In my initial testing it's a sloppy cleaner of some of the infections I purposely placed on my Virtual Machine. I used MBAM to clean up what NIS missed, although give credit to Norton for really disabling the infections all together.

I firmly believe that if you have NIS 2009 with Norton Antibot, you'll have some of the best protection in the industry. Just expect a heavy price tag, and some imperfections to what is a solid security solution.

Give this new version a try before you bash.

I haven't used a Norton product since 2003. After seeing that Cnet and PCWorld rated Norton Internet Security so high, and many users rated it so low, decided to give it a try. Unistalled NOD and Comodo and went for it.

Installision went smooth, just took a long time to install. Very light on my System. Norton was using less than 20mb ram, except at start up when updating then over 80 mb. I can see why its rated so high. High detection rate (AV-Comparatives)Doesn't seem to slow down my Internet. The firewall inbound protection is excellent. The firewall doesn't pop up with technical question all the time. For beginners and users who want to set and forget this is a good program. Technical users probably won't care for it.

Cons: Norton added a Phishing tool bar to firefox. Firewall outbound protection weak.(Matousec leak test)Uninstall took a long time.

Since then, over the years Symantec has fallen into the high commerical mainstream and has now developed bloatware. Sure, it can protect your machine. But out of my hundreds of clients, many tests have proven a 30% speed increase of the OS once uninstalled. Mainly due to the fact of the heavy use of 'Pretty UI' and an over bloated engine. Do yourself a favor, there are many other alternatives. NAV has become a face, rather than a useful utility over the years in my opinion.

Rated a 3, up from my previous ratings, because:

1. Norton Security Suite 2007 is still a resouce hog. Yes, this one, the version 10.0.0.1, the beta, uses too many resources. The big remaining negative, hence not rated a 4.

2. It is slightly better as far as memory usage compared to 2006 version, and more noteably, it works more smoothly with dual-core CPUs.

3. When running strictly the antivirus (e.g., not installing any other components), it is even smoother than the already improved 2006 version.

Conclusion: Bad as they were in 2004 and 2005, Norton has truly improved performance-wise. However, the improvement does seem to be sluggish for their Security Suite apps compared to the actual antivirus. If this remains true for the full 2007 version of Norton Security Suite, my advice is: if you must use Norton, use the Antivirus only, and combine it with the built-in XP SP2 firewall or a third-party one, and have some freeware standalone spyware scanners like Spybot S&D or Ad-aware SE for backup (and to remove the "virus scraps" that Norton still seems to be leaving behind...).

EDIT: In response to comments above, primarily in response to Blackhole8746, just how do the PC Magazine's ratings for an older product have ANYTHING to do with the 2007 beta that you've obviously never touched or seen? Please try to be objective, or specify the version you review at the top of your review.

I was a beta tester for Symantec for 3 years, and always liked their products, even though they had a high resource usage.
Recently, I got a virus that wrought havoc on my machine, but NAV didn't see it, even with the newest updates, nor did ANY of their Beta tests.
I tested several different Security Suites, and several stand-alone programs, none of which could help my situation, and found that TrendMicro PC-cillin was the answer I was looking for - it found and cleaned the infected file on startup!
Now, I'm not about to try to convince anyone NOT to get a Symantec product, but you had better have 2GB of RAM, and a speedy dual-core CPU, just so you don't have to deal with the missing resources.
Symantec does indeed need more work on their line of products in the way of resource management, and should listen to their Beta crew more, as I have posted (as a Symantec Beta Tester) no less than 85 bugs/issues with their previous beta builds of NIS & NAV.
The memory leaks have never been addressed, and like another poster said below, there's just too much unneeded 'bloat' to the product.
Now, on the other hand, if I had not encountered the specific situation that I did, I may not have posted anything here...but after installing TM PC-cillin Security Suite, I've not looked back, and in fact, have not continued to beta test any Symantec products.
(you think $30 for Tech help is bad? - how about spending 3 hours on the phone with someone who BARELY speaks English trying to resolve something that should have been simple...an install issue on a purposely infected HDD!!!)
The glory of these Security Suites, is that everything a person needs for security is included...Internet Security, Antivirus, Firewall, Spyware/Malware cleaner, etc...and NIS does indeed make it simple to use, just not 'simple' on resources.

just to add on from where dear Zankur left off. it not the lightest version of norton internet security ever released, i think you'll find the first one will be the lightest due to there was no functions to start off with, let alone no security.

granted that this is a beta project, everyone seems to have this fascination with beta products being completely un-useable, but in actual fact, that it what the release candidates and the alpha's are for. beta's should be stable enough to run effectively, and are designed to pull out minor bugs and missed major ones.

not ones right off the bat. like you get when you do try 2007.

i have catalogued over a dozen major problems with this release, and too many minor ones to mention.

symantec's only hope to rebuild the app was to re-invent the interface (granted), but they were to also fix memory issues and improve heuristics. they have done neither.

why blow twice the resources on a brandname. fact, kaspersky and nod32 will do both a better, faster job with less resources.

while however the junior does need an intergrated solution, norton also falls short. bitdefender, trend micro and zonealarm all offer better intergration and protection.

and to cap it all off, i'll be buggared with a pitchfork before i pay $30 per call for tech support!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are going to review the program, it would be nice to at least give a screen shot that is worthy. The NIS2003 UI is outdated. The 2007 has a whole new look and for those that use the BETA, they will quickly see that. It will have that Aero Vista look. Pleasant and easy to use.

I think i who has always been norton supporter will have to admit, that norton is a resource hog,the ccapp application doesn't shut-down at system shutdown, the control-centre keeps checking on every restart even when told not to do so.
The problem is not with its protection but its usability!
with all the problem it gives to the pc,the usability of it gets over-looked.i wonder why symantec keeps rolling out such suites which is un-usable?Other suites which offer same features are good on pc unlike this one,i would sincerely ask users to go for some other software and don't buy it!

NIS06 isn't complete gargage, but it's close. This program takes up a rediculous amount of resources, is overly bloated, and doens't do that great of a job protecting anything. This is about the norm. for all Symantec products and generaly come to be expected.

I rate this software a 2 only because it is after all beter than the previous versions.

Baldrick

Baldrick reviewed v2006 Beta Version 9.1 Refresh on Dec 23, 2005

Originally, this looked promising and give this at rating of 4 as NIS2006 seemed to be a good improvement on NIS2005 in terms of overall resource usage.

Update

Since very late December, when Symantec released a patch for a part of NIS, things have gone downhill; email no longer connecting (but have fixed that by re-scanning the relevant Symantec components defined to the firewall), ccApp.exe not closing down properly atreboot, etc., so rating has to drop. I am now going to investigate an alternative sweet like ZASS.

Poor show really......after such a promising start.

I've never had an issue with Norton Internet Security. I'm using 2006 right now on two systems and the memory footprint of the various services amounts to about 80MB, which both my systems can easily handle. Boot time increase is neglegible. Uninstallation and upgrading - never had a problem. Updates are available daily. Detection is among the highest for a commercial antivirus. Firewall also blocks all pop-ups and ads from all browsers, and is configurable. I don't understand why Norton gets such a bad rap, the 2006 edition is much improved.

Installation can seem horrendously slow, and experience occasional lags when tinkering with some settings. Scanning speed is great, custom jobs can be created, updates work flawlessly.

Other than a few minor niggles it's a good all-round system safeguard from viruses, hackers and other nasties.

Support is great, and not just limited to a help file, theres a plethora of web-support and tech articles from Symantec should the need arise -- Norton needs repairing, or you need help recognizing those dreaded error codes -- Norton AntiVirus has encountered an internal program error." Hopefully it will, and i'm actually quite sure it will be even better considering Sunbelt's reputation as having one of the best AntiSpyware products out there (Counter Spy). If they're that excellent and zapping malware, then I bet they'll transform Kerio into a malware, intrusion blocking machine of doom! *ah hem*

As for Norton, It's an excellent program but it shoots itself in the foot due to the fact it's so popular. Popular suites automatically put you at risk due to the fact exploits are well known and often used. Hackers take advantage of Norton's broad consumer base, and they also know that Norton users (majority) aren't tech experiencd. Overall the best protection is using something less well known so you'll be safe from exploits creeping through your defenses. That's only my opinion though.

Hmm. I'm no fan of Symantec myself but I have to say there is a few things wrong with your review. It's clear to me you never used this product - at least not this version.

[1]Symantec's detection rates are amongst the best - see http://www.av-comparatives.org/

[2]NOD32 is execllent for heuristic detection of 'itw' malware but for trojan detection it has a lot of ground to make up. I like NOD32 - but believe it or not Symantec has slightly better detection rate regardless of the extra load on system resources.

[3]Kerio Personal Firewall has been discontinued. It has been purchased by Subbelt software. We will see if this remains to be a top firewall.

If you are to review an antivirus product you must first install it :) and analyse it from multiple perspectives in no particular order ie. user friendliness (UI), detection & disinfection* including reaction to new malware, stability, resource consumption, customer support and a few more.

*Taking detection as a given, some products fail to handle the disinfection of malware properly and this can lead to problems removing an infection without the help of a 3rd party tool.

Downloaded latest beta. Installation was very smooth. Have been running NIS 2005 (which was already fatser than previous versions) and this one seems somewhat faster. No much has changed; not much configuration apparent on the spyware detection front (must all be under the bonnet). Protection Center can be a bit manic and persistent re. its notifications (but that may be no bad thing in some cases). All scans ran smoothly though no faster than NIS 2005 and impact on machine performance was the same of slightly better than with NIS 2005. So far not issues or problems. All in all a very impressive beta IMHO.....but then again I have never really had any problems with Norton products in the past (as some have described re. their experiences). Looking forward to the formal release.

This beta expries on the 1st September, but Symantec say that a second beta will be available before then.

Well, it looks very nice, with a few new features that should make things easier to use and understand. There's a Security Center (similar to Windows Security Center) that shows all current errors or possible problems and gives you an easy fix for them. This Security Center is also built into the system tray with a toaster popup that means you don't have to open the program to see problems, but also probably uses more resources.

It looks like the NIS 2006 Beta is not listed on the Symantec website just yet. Hopefully it'll be up in the next two days so I can get that security key.

Norton Internet Security is very strict with its rules, unpenetratable with its state of the art, complex protection protocols and rules, if you want this kind of security you should download this software, sacrificing a little performance, about 5 seconds startup time, and some disk space that's all! And by the way whoever runs an AMD processor and mainboard go upgrade it into an Intel Pentium 4 or Xeon if you're living it up, like me, and stop complaining! If your system is slowed down it's your fault and not Norton's! Geez what is it with you people??

What can I say...it's a Norton product. It's good at what it does. The AntiVirus is near the top currently in existence. I like Symantec AV better than Norton (Yes, I DO KNOW that they are made by the SAME company, but they behave and run VERY differently). Norton is 'prettier', and therefore takes up more resources. This beta didn't seem to affect my PC near to the level that NIS 2004 did. The anti-spyware capabilities are definitely something to give Spybot/Ad-Aware/MS Antispyware are run for the money. However, I agree with the majority of the posts in wondering why I would pay so much for just this feature if I can get the same thing from something that doesn't cost me jack (of course, I'm not talking about the MS antispyware, rather Spybot/Ad-Aware since we all know that if it's M$, it costs you something somewhere down the line). Some delinquent non-admin posted the idea that Ad-Aware is "so 2003" and that it doesn't make the top 5 anymore... I'd love to know where they got their info. Probably 'Wired' or some other GQ techzine. Oh well, that's another tangent.
Back to target: Good job Norton...now make it cheaper.
It will be interesting to see what happens when more people wake up and start using NOD32...

kgruber reviewed v2005 AntiSpyware Edition on Apr 19, 2005

It would be helpful to the downloader if reviewers would actually download, install, and use the current version of the program instead of bashing a company. It is unhelpful to read comments like "bloatware" and "resource hog" without further qualification or context. My desktop has a 60 GB hard drive and 512MB of ram and an Athlon 1800 processor. The program runs just fine. What are the critics running? A pentium 166 with 64 MB of ram and 1GB hard drive?

I have downloaded and used this program for two days and actually liked what it did in terms of ease of use and functionality. I think it's an excellent all in one package good for the power user and beginner alike.

This product is very capable and is deserving of a four. Nevertheless, after evaluating it, I uninstalled it and went back to my previous configuration: Symantec Antivirus, Kerio Firewall and Ad-Aware. I did so not because NIS is a poor product, rather I felt it didn't offer anything new or warranted buying a new product license and lose out on prior product purchases.

Yes I have tried other products also. ALL of them.
I am not saying Norton is the best. I am saying it is better then you are saying it is here.
I have seen the Norton haters many times and usualy don't let them bother me. They read an article where someone say how much of a memory hog it is and that sets them off into memory land. I just love how many people post here and on Wilders about how great a product is or isn't based on someone elses thoughts and not their own. I am one of the few that actualy
infect my own test systems to see what is really detected and not.
I used KAV and loved it's detections, till I begged them to detect commercial keyloggers and they wouldn't. And don't rattle on about the extended Defs ect. Then their Adtreams topped the cake for me.
I know you be the fool to go Mc Afee over Norton.
I will say I love NOD-32.
Layerd Defense. AT-AV-FW-AS & now AR (antirootkit)
I haven't used Norton in over a year but I can tell you this after using this trial one day, It was able to tag and actualy delete Adware.WintaskAd & Spysweeper was't.
I contacted Spysweeper support a month ago and their solution was to boot into safe mode, scan three times then reboot. If that didn't cure it send them a Highjackthis log.
Antispyware didn't detect it.
Yes id does attack svchost.exe
Now go do the right thing and try it out.
You can always reformat as I do if you don't like it.

For the last 3 years, I have tried the Norton Internet Security and have been upset by the junk Norton is putting out. Each year is more and more bloatware, slowing the computer down, until it will not reboot properly. It slows my computer resources down to a point where the computer will just reboot by itself, during the intial start up process. When I remove Norton, it will then work properly. I've NIS Pro, and yes it works pretty well. It's a fine firewall, handles both inbound & outbound connections, passes every test, doesn't slow down network traffic much, handles all sorts of TCP/IP garbage flawlessly, spots changed files trying to connect out, integrates with the rest of the Norton product line, and is updated regularly and automatically by Norton. It is stable, easy to work with, and well supported. A really good product. The only downside is the #$%#@$ spam filter. New this year it is a 3rd party product Symantec bought and has botched the integration of. It might be a fine spam filter, the non-Symantec version was, but it is s-l-o-w to the point of crippling my email client, Outlook 2003. Besides, I already use the excellent free SpamBayes and after 15,000 some spams caught I've got it well trained so no need for Norton's version. But... there's no way to turn the Norton's Spamblock off. Going into the application settings one can sorta disable it but it still loads, still pigs out, no way around it. It can't even be removed separately like Antivirus can be. I've had to resort to renaming a dll to stop it from starting which means every time my system loads I get an error message from it. So, the firewall is a fine one, but watch out for the parasitic #@^$^!! spam filter bolt-on.

Users did a LiveUpdate and there product was de-activated and had to be re-activated, after so many re-activation you have to call to get it reset... If you are using 2003, I would just stick with it and avoid the hassle of the activation.
