This software is no longer free. There is a 30 day free trial period, then it costs $10.00 to buy. I used it when it was free, but I'm not sure it's worth $10 to have a glorified task bar.

Extremely slow on Windows XP - takes upwards of five minutes to start. Periodically crashes on exit, and displays an unhelpful recovery message on next startup. Disabling 'docklets' can avoid this crash. Customer support basically non-existent. You have to download and install their 'Impulse' download manager in order to get updates. They will send you 1-2 emails per week pitching their other products.

Overall, not a value for the money; there are better choices out there.

I just installed the 1.9 version, after not using it for a long time, and I really like what they have done with it. It's not perfect, but it has more of the features that I really want then any other Dock for Windows. If you want, you can set it to function a lot like the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar, only the icons look better.

But you can reserve the right side of the screen and choose to have it in front all of the time, so when you maximize a dialog window, it actually stops right at the edge of the Dock and does not block it out.

I have it on the right side of the screen, and though it does not automatically stretch from top to bottom, you can insert enough separators to make it extend to the top and bottom of the screen if you want.

So, I have the Windows Task Bar running horizontal, and the Object Dock at the far right going top to bottom. Makes it look like a mirrored "L" at the edges of the right and bottom of the screen and stays out of the way and does its thing.

I like that you can adjust the Alignment in very precise increments but also just choose LEFT, CENTERED or RIGHT if you want. That level of detailed configuration allows you to line it up exactly how you want, a pixel at a time.

I guess the only downside that really bugs me is that it seems to no longer be developed.

But it is still free, so it rates a solid 4, imo.

From soneone who's tried em all, Objectdock was the first dock I tried but it was much too much of a hog, since then I've used y'z dock, RKlauncher, and most recently rocketdock which until now I considered the best. New version of objectdock is great, many features and slim on system resources. Many themes and Icons available, many icons included in the program too, for example I dragged firefox and trillian onto the dock expecting to see blurry icons I'd have to change, but no OD automatically gave them nice High res icons.

I'm using ObjectDock for years and never had performance problems, the memory usage is very low and the program run very fast here. I'm using the Plus version now and I like a lot the new weather Docklet (that expland on mouse over to show the weather for the next four days) and the new position configurations.

Loved it in 2005 but it started losing icons and docks. Removed it. Reinstalled on new computer last week and then updated. Bars won't stay on top (problem known for long time but apparently no fix). Tray docket wouldn't install. Icon names stop appearing and unloading and re-starting ObjectDock cures for a few hours. Oddly sends CPU to 86% if My Docks opened when Yahoo Mail beta in Firefox (Yahoo mail is a horrible CPU load when started but ObjectDock seems to keep the CPU usage high - only unloading OD drops the CPU usage. Same things happen on my laptop except for the crashes (so far).

Attempted to register with Stardock forum - the only help online. Won't take my login which I verified as correct. Unable to uninstall until I found unwise.exe in OD program folder.

I really like ObjectDock but decided I have better things to do with my life. I tried to find an alternative, but none have near the utility or aesthetics of ObjectDock.

It is still good, but there is a problem with this version which I didn't have with any of the previous versions.. . when i drag the mouse over the dock it magnifies as usual however, it doesn't return the original size and just stays magnified.

Very good little app. One thing it has over Rocketdock is that it has the "RESERVE EDGE OF SCREEN" setting, so it stays visable all of the time and apps maximize only to the edge of the dock, not totally under it. Can't seem to figure out how to get Rocketdock to do that.

Needs ability to set additional spacing between icons - like cell padding in web tables - or something similar. Icons show edge to edge and are too close together.

Needs to be able to extend the dock from screen edge to screen edge like the Windows Taskbar.

Seems to chew up few resources and seems quite stable so far.

ObjectDock is a excellent desktop utility, I using it for years now and it's very easy to use, have low memory usage and is compatible with many cool/useful docklets (mini applications to run on the dock). I also recomend to check the demo of the ObjectDock Pro that come with many cool extra features like tabbed docks.

Seems like a neat idea, but I much prefer Roxip's "XStart" to which I have a link in the System Tray, Start Menu and Desktop.

For XStart, I have NINE icons (Office, Pictures, Video Players etc) and then click on those main headings for more program links. I have about 50 links neatly organized.

ObjectDock looks neat, but in practice I just don't like it. (I'm sure it's fine now, but two years ago I installed ObjectDock and I could not successfully remove it)

I love these little things... I've got DesktopX installed and use the little fishies all the time with a nice underwater shot for the desktop wall paper. It's hard to tell them from the real thing. But like someone else noted they are a little heavey on the resources, but with todays machines and the ram that are most of them it's hardly noticeable unless you are playing a game or something. There are some really nice plug-ins that are very useable.

This new version is very impressive as it adds speed, functionality, and got rid of several bugs that irritated me. The smoothness of the dock, even on old systems, has always been impressive. ObjectDock is the best program for customization or program launch capabilities.

There are many icon, docklets, and backgrounds available for OD. The plus version adds tabs and is well worth the price.

This program claims to do everything that I would want it to do, however, it misses a few VERY important elements.

I would like to completely replace my start bar. To do this, I will need the ability to have 4 areas to this bar.

#1) Start Menu -- ObjectDock does a good job of allowing a Start Menu icon with pull downs. Very nice, however, the ability to right-click and use the classic right-click options is not present. I cannot see why this option is not available as this is built upon the Windows framework.

#2) QuickLaunch -- ObjectDock allows you to have the equivalent of a QuickLaunch menu. I've placed my Start Menu link in here. I also managed to add a "New Start Menu" item -- which I reconfigured to show My Documents instead. This is NOT the most intuitive thing to do as adding a folder link and selecting 'show as drop down' rather than 'open folder' would make more sense if you approach the problem from that angle.

#3) Task Bar -- ObjectDock handles this perfectly.

#4) System Tray -- ObjectDock handles this TERRIBLY. Yes, terribly. First off, I have 8 things open in my Start Bar -- WinAMP at the moment is hanging out there, Skype, my Internet Connection status thingy, volume control, Anti-Virus etc... -- so why does ObjectDock Pro (yes, I have the pro version) insist that I have Skype open and that's it?

The Tray support is terrible -- it's just awful. And plus, with the pro version - why do I need a separate tab menu to accomplish the things that the OSX-style menu doesn't do?

I'm going to be patient and wait until v2.0 ... this is good for what it DOES do. It's weaknesses are what it DOESN'T do.

It should fully replace your start bar. Without access to a full system tray and without allowing you to right-click and move around start-bar entries, it's inferior to the start bar.

And I'd prefer to use this :) -- because it's actually really cool and customizable.

Kudos, but it's not ready to replace the start bar.

I've been using both Aqua Dock and Object Dock for about 2 years now. The major difference for me is the amount of memory consumed to do the same jobs.

Beats me why these values change while in an idle state. My only suggestion would be 'mouse knocking' at the edge of the screen to make the app visible.

Very useful, very versatile tool bar. Easy to configure. Having said that, it's totally unusable to me because when in auto-hide mode, it has no show delay. How lame is that? Every time you inadvertently brush your mouse against the top of the screen, it instantly pops out. This eventually gets fatiguing when you already use your mouse too much. I recommend AquaDock, which has a show delay.

One of the coolest tools you can get for Windows; and with it's extensibility model, the possibilities are endless.

Someone earlier mentioned that it takes up CPU time when sitting idle. I have not noticed this behaviour, and I have been watching for it. Even its memory consumption is relatively low at ~7MB. Overall it is a must-have.

Very nice dock,, This is the first time that I use this software,, I liked it, specially for the Systat plugins. One thing I noticed is that it takes upto 8% of CPU usage when idle which is high, it crashes twice upto now for 2 weeks. For the style it present I will keep using it.

ObjectDock is a wonderful program. Everything works great except for when you play games it tends to slow your computer down. Another thing is it's missing a systray. I think that is so Stardock can sell their Objectbar to us.

Wonderful program that offers interactive GUI environment for accessing commonly used programs and locations.
Similar to Mac OS X dock...when cursor is over an object it is magnified (pretty cool feature). Stardock.com has more than 2000 ultra high quality .png's amd .ico's files available to make the dock look ultra spiffy...free for upto 50 MB, but well worth the $49 to register and get the entire package.
Two (2) primary problems with Object Dock:
1 - The bar uses quite a few MB's of RAM at least 10 MegaBytes on my computer
2 - performance in graphics applications is degraded by a noticable ammount...ie photoshop takes 2-3x longer to load and similar effects with all filters...also games have lower FPS when bar is enabled...so I just shutdown the bar before I launch any games.
This is not a necessary utility, but it certainly is some nice eyecandy...hopefully the upcoming versions will leave even less of a footprint.

To all those people wanting taskbar functionality, to get it, you need to buy ObjectBar. ObjectBar will let you customize the apperance of the Windows taskbar to your liking. Or, you can purchase the whole Stardock Object Desktop set, and you will have UNLIMITED desktop theming capabilities. With the suite, you can make your OS look like Windows 3.11, Mac OS X 10.3, KDE, QNX, or make your own custom UI.

This is only one component in a whole theming suite. If you purchase the suite for only $50.00, you can get every application in the suite, and a year of free upgrades and support. Definatly worth the upgrade. As another point, this company is out to make money, it is not going to give you a complete desktop theming solution for no cost. If you want the quality, you must pay for it.

Also, and I have to express this fear. I noticed that the install executable is called objectdock_freeware.exe. Is this the ONLY version, or, like so many other pieces of good software (that are not open source), will there be another version, a shareware version. Personally, I use Objectdock every day, and would gladly pay for it. However, I do believe that some companies overcharge for good stuff, and that makes them quite unattractive to continue using. I bet if there is a shareware version of ObjectDock, that it does have a taskbar, however.

This program is the best of its kind but still useless to me because it doesn't support the system tray. There are some programs that put info or minimize to the tray and you can't change the settings so I still need the regular windows taskbar to use them. I would like to replace my taskbar with ObjectDock, I would pay for it if you added this support, tell me where to send the money. Please add system tray support!!!

This dock is ok, but I don't care what anyone else says- Y'z Dock blows it away. I was eagerly awaiting this .99 release, but I must say I am greatly disappointed. Y's runs a lot faster and a lot smoother on my computer- and I have a Radeon 9700 Pro/AthlonXP NF2 combo @ 2.5Ghz with 512Mb RAM at 210Mhz. Adding shortcuts with OD (as stated by others here) is a pain. One of the nice things about this release is the implementation of docklets- the included weather docklet runs rather slow as compared to Y'z. The normal Z ordering feature that was added a while back was a welcome feature, but I like the way Y's implements this better. Unfortunately, Y's Dock has been discontinued and sadly to say, Object Dock is going to be what all of us Aqua junkies will be using in the future. For now, I will stick to my trusty old Y's DUAL DOCK (which cannot be done with OD). Object Dock keeps getting better and better with each release and Kudos goes to Jeff B. for the effort. I give this app a "4" star rating for the effort alone.

Excellent little toolbar program with one very frustrating attribute (flaw?): there is now way (that I’ve found) to add shortcuts to it in any sort of manner even resembling efficient. For each shortcut the user must open its configuration window, click add shortcut which it adds the dock, then right click on the newly added object to browse for its target. This method might not be too bad if i only needed to add 3 or 4 shortcuts but what if I want to add 30 or 40? It would literally take hours.

Instead it would be tremendously easier if when the user clicked to add a new shortcut it opened an explorer-type window that allowed for drag and drop to create new dock items (or allowed an import from user’s quicklaunch?). in \program files\objectdock there could be another dir that exclusively held these links that objectdock would populate itself from.

I completely understand this is freeware beta and from a programming standpoint it's probably much easier to lump all the shortcut info into a single .ini but it makes configuring it extremely cumbersome (frustrating!). Its the only thing that keeps me from using it exclusively.

When you have the windows taskbar on autohide you can't see it flashing until you unhide it. ObjectDock should have an option to disable "hidden bobbing" so it behaves in a similar way. It's not really a huge deal though. I think before OD goes 1.0 it should definitely include:

1. systray
2. explorer context menus on right-click

Great improvement over .50! If it keeps improving at this rate, no more taskbar for me! ObjectBar all the way! One thing I noticed in this build is that when autohide is enabled and you click on My Computer/Configure/Recycle Bin and move the mouse away so the bar hides, you can still see the icon bobbing partially from the edge of the screen. I think the bobbing should disable as soon as the bar starts to hide. If the bar is still visible though it should bob as it normally does.

COuld use another feature I didnt see mentioned... It gets kind of annoying the way it defaults to making the taskbar hidden, sorry, its nowhere close to a replacement yet. Second, its kind of annoying the way it sits on the side and just doesnt autohide.. even set to a small size, its still obstructing on some things.. Even y'z dock had an autohide feature... Other than that, awesome and I can only hope it gets better...

Very nice, in addition to a systray feature I think it should also include a Start Menu object that would display the start menu obviously. Also, the ability to force certain objects to stay on the left or right side of the bar. One thing that drives me nuts is the right-click how it opens properties for an object, I think instead it should open the default explorer menu item for it. I often right-click on My Computer and go to properties, can't do that with ObjectDock. What could be done is have the default explorer menu and append an ObjectDock Properties item to it, that way you can still access the OD properties.

Remarkable job for a beta. I always had some issues with Y'z dock or Moby but this one gets it almost all right out of the door. Its fast its smooth and the magnification process works nicely. Plus it mimics the minimized windows look of the apple dock very well. The lack of a sys tray is only minor issue to me but I can see where some may find it useful. If you decide a sys tray like view, make it something that user enabled and not a default option. The only hiccup now is finding away to blend these together with a way to not interface directly with the start menu for reaching particular apps and folders. Otherwise from that its a great app worth trying out.

Excellent Program! Very nice looking and works well, especially considering is ver .51. I agree that it needs a systray as well as autohide. The normal windows taskbar also pops up after a while even though 'hide windows taskbar' is checked.

This program rocks so far. I'd like to see tray icons included, maybe fade to being more transparent while the mouse isnt over it (or autohide?), dragging icons to it, easier way to add special folders instead of having to use the guid. That'll do for a start :)

I have to agree with SpaceGhost but if you have 512mb+ RAM then it's ok I guess. I also have Y'zDock, for testing purpose, the only thing that is different is that ObjectDock can animate the icons once click it jumps up and down. Also any active webpage windows are minimized to the objectdock which is pretty neat. I like to request an option so we can drag or reposition the dock. Sorry for my english.

This is GREAT! First there was Mobydock, then Y'zdock, but this is the first one that works on my Compaq laptop WITHOUT the wizzbang videocard (like a geforce or something). It also has the nice crystal icons :-)

WOW! I've been waiting for something like this! Runs nice and smooth but there's a few things I noticed. The "Dock Item Size" should correspond to pixels, if you set an item at size 32 it is not the same size as a 32 pixel standard windows icon. Also if would be nice if there was an option to include tray icons, maybe have a seperate divider for the tray like there is for the My Computer/Options/Recycle/Clock section. The ability to position the bar is also a plus :) I understand it's an alpha and far from complete, so far so good though! Keep up the fantastic work!
