Publisher's Description

OpenOffice is the open source project through which Sun Microsystems is releasing the technology for the popular StarOffice productivity suite. It is an international office suite that will run on all major platforms and provide access to all functionality and data through open-component based APIs and an XML-based file format. It establishes the necessary facilities to make this open source technology available to the developer community.

I would wish for both OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice to get a full sandbox as Gogole Chrome and Adobe Reader have.

The problem, for me, with OpenOffice for Mac has always and is still its poor integration in the MacOS X environment, and one of the consequences I deplore the most is the painfully slow scroll through large documents. NeoOffice doesn't suffer from that flaw (it's a flaw for me), as scrolling is much easier and faster. Aside from that, and like all the other suites stemming from the OOo core, its functionalities are quite interesting, like its capability to export a document in the PDF format natively. I just wish it were a little faster to load and to scroll through documents... Oh yes, one thing: it's free...

Rough around the edges (very rough — it's an alpha), but having ODF will be a boon to Mac users.

Very good to see it keep pace with the Windows version in terms of release date and version.

Only complaint is again about the interface not being native to OS X and instead relying on X11.

Neo Office is one alternative solution, but hopefully the main folks on the Open Office project will be able to update the entire suite so that it takes full advantage of the native OS X interface.

Please keep up the good work. It is fantastic to have the same suite on Windows, Linux and OS X.

Maybe soon, Microsoft Office will be a faded memory for many of us who don't really want to use it. If they can just get that OpenDoc format (or whatever) figured out and standardized, we can use Open Office APPS with Microsoft Office FILES and not miss a beat. That would make life much better for consultants who interface with clients reliant on the Microsoft Juggernaut.

I'm impressed how fast it runs atop X11 under OS X -- faster than the Windows Java version.
NeoOffice is too sluggish for me!

While I do appreciate the product, I'm glad that there is an alternative version that is more Mac OS X friendly.

NeoOffice is a great option for OS X users.

Yes, Mac does seem to be last on their list, but I don't really blame them either... If you want the most users, target windows first, then Linux, then Mac. Now that they are on 2.x, i will try on my mac

Looks like the OS X version is lagging behind in terms of production and support, sadly.

The Windows version of this didn't let you count the number of words in a selection, which is essential to me, so I can't use this.

That should be fixed in version 2, then I'll give it a try. I'm using AbiWord at the moment which I don't like all that much so hopefully this will be better.
