Publisher's Description
Protowall is a lightweight program that runs in the background, taking up little CPU and memory, while blocking thousands of bad IP addresses. All the work is done by the driver that filters each packet, extracts the IP header and then compares the address with the ones in the table, then either discards or permits the packet to pass. The GUI is essentially a "driver instructor" that communicates to the driver the IP list to check against. The GUI also receives notifications from the driver when a packet arrives and when actions are performed with a packet. It Blocks both inbound and outbound packets. It blocks incoming packets from Internet addresses that are on the Bluetack Blacklists. This is handled by another program called the Blocklist Manager. This program finds and retrieves lists of bad IP addresses. They are sorted (overlapping resolved) and then converted to various formats such as Protowall, PeerGuardian & other common applications and firewalls.

So happy it's still under dev... love this program. For christ sakes, for people having problems installing it, they made a VIDEO just for you dum suma biches. Quit b****ing, once you get the driver working protowall works beautifully.

notwithstanding not being able to get it to run, (followed all the steps on the homepage faq) I gather it a very usefull program. i took refugee in peer guardian that worked flawlessly since first install. the possibility to download prefabbed blacklists is Godsend as is the experience of thousands of other users on their respective programs homepage. a very welcome & needed addition to using a firewall.
(one day later)
installed it on my dual xeon server and no problem. up and running. my other machine is an amd64, maybe i've got some issues there. in any case worthwhile trying out and using !

Since my firewall is a swiss cheese (SKPW) as far as IP blocking is concerned, i've been using an IP specific blocking app. Tried this one a few times, but failed to install or had CPU hogging problems....nevertheless worth a re-try as the present blocker does not allow hit counting.

Advertised as working on Windows Server 2003, however I have never had it successfully install and/or work on any system with any type of install, with various service packs. I've tried 2.0 throughout various beta releases and they never go.

This program does what it's supposed to, no need giving it a bad rating because you 'think' you don't need it. It takes up VERY little resources (unlike Peerguardian), and this version is much more stable than the last (hense no driver bug).
And by the way, you can edit the IP filter so it doesn't block certain sites you visit. You can do this manually or if you're like me and you always want the most up-to-date blocklist use Bluetack's Blocklist Manager, and delete your used ranges from there.
As of today mine's blocking 2,893,411,942 known IPs in 173,721 ranges. Gotta love it.

For its intended use, I think this is a great application.
This allows you to filter unwanted communication with addresses for any peer-to-peer application that may or may not have IP filtering built in.
While not in a P2P application, you could use a less restrictive set of IP filter rules for general Internet usage.
Overall I think it is a great software application and I'm happy there is finally an update for it!

Well,
a program that works and is fine
and Absolutely useless...
There's no reason to block any ip range ,
P2P Applications which have an Ipfilter built inside
make this job and avoid the unfair connections
just for P2P connections .
Why Should I Block A DoD Ip , be freezed in the simply action to see a DoD site ?
This program is only a glass of water...
a fine glass of water.

Tried this as an alternative to Peerguardian, since Peerguardian was limited in options (or at least, so I thought). Big mistake on my part... the software is buggy and can't run for more than a few days without BSOD whereas Peerguardian can run for months without problems. Prone to weird bugs as well.

When this actually _installs_ without me having to manually register anything and piss about setting this that and the other - _then_ I'll start using it. And it only gets one star from me because it supposedly works for some people. Otherwise I'd give it zero!

I had to submit them it fix the download link when I first tried to get it, but after i got it and took a few min to get it installed (kicks Windows XP for being a pain during this part), it started up and block a Microsoft communication right off the bat.
So far it's running great and I run it side-by-side with SyGate 5.5 Free w/o any problems so far :-)

1. If its messing with your LAN, don't you think its obvious you have LAN/IANA rules in your blocklist? Removing those will no longer mes with your LAN.
2. You do NOT need to register to simply download ProtoWall, only if you want technical support. Its free and unless you are severly lazy, takes just a few minutes to register.
3. Its beta software, as such the GUI is just an example, it can be changed. Port 80 bypass probably won't be included as its a security risk. We are working on another option for web browsing.

The great protowall, about time that it got here.
The ndiswan drivers for the ap do need work, but what can you expect from a beta app right and useing there other app the blocklist manager
(also in beta but there working on all kinds of builds for there vip members from what i hear)
http://www.bluetack.co.u...p;pa=showpage&pid=1
it will allow you to load up lists that will block all kinds of nasty things like pr0n, web, spiders, ads, website trackers,antip2p people and a lot more.
I give them props for makeing the app at least so hope fully the windows 2000 drivers will get better soon,as for xp there is no problems here at all :)

ProtoWall Rocks!!!!!!
This App was a little hard to install but the tech support at http://www.bluetack.co.uk was great and I was able to install the app and get it working. Once you get this App running it rocks, they know of the bugs in the program and are working at gettting them fixed. I would never want my port 80 open as that would let anyone into my box as long as that port was open.
This app was ment to block and that is what it does. The people that want port 80 open can use the blocklist manager over at bluetack to make exclusions and tha works great. I highly recommend that you check it out and before you say you do not like it ask some questions as to why this app is the way it is. And if you have problems installing the App. go over and get some help. It is worth it!!!

I loved the 1.x versions but had to stop using due it messing with my LAN configuration. This 2.x version does not impress, even though working as it should I just don't like the way they're going with the GUI, .. it's ugly, atleast have an option not to use it. Also, portblocking has not been implemented yet. It'd be nice to be able to block most ports but allow 80 to get through. Perhaps when ProtoWall has that capability it will be interesting again, .. as for now I'm sticking with safepeer for Azureus and the IPFilter for eMule.
cyberguy reviewed v2.00 Build 2007 Beta on Jul 16, 2004
I wonder just how effective an IP blacklist filter really is. Most ppl who do shady things on the internet do not use a static IP to do them. They either have their own IP or they will bounce off of another (innocent) IP. I will give it 3 stars since it can be used to filter pr0n sites.

Nice idea, shame the driver is highly buggy. I have several win2k systems that will not work due to the driver app not initialising correctly with the network cards i have. The developer team refuses to accept that their drivers are buggy and their help is consistently to install and re-install the application.
