Great for my usage as a lightweight easy to modify kiosk. Just checking if the correct version of 6.2.0 is available from the download link? See http://www.tomas-m.com/blog/

Stable and compatible across a number of hardware platforms, though I would have preferred XFCE over KDE (ala Popcorn) for snappier administration. Files can be saved if Slax is installed and run off a FAT formatted USB flash drive. Loses one star for poor module support as I could only modify one slackware-current package (mozilla-firefox-3.0.4-i686-1) out of ten to work on Slax 6.

Live by default runs in memory and the only way to save stuff is to install it (?). Instead the 'cd' should be able to make a new bootable iso based on your preferences, etc. my 2¢

At one time you could save Slax changes to a file server. However if you are going to run LiveCD's I found Puppy, Slax, DSL and Wolvix (games) to be the easiest. However the slickest trick is to use a small app Wubi.

If you have to stick to liveCD's there are over 300 versions at.. http://www.livecdlist.co...&sort=Name&sm=0

Newbie here. I have tried Slax, the previous version, but was not able to figure out how to keep any changes I made. After rebooting, none of the changes I did would keep, such as changing the wallpaper, putting in bookmarks, downloading and installing a program. Does slax do this? Puppy Linux does do this and I don't have any problems saving things on it.
Thanks for any information.

@oubeaver:
I think you have not understood his question
@sjc001:
SLAX Standard comes only with KDE & Fluxbox.
SLAX Popcorn comes with XFCE & Fluxbox
SLAX Frodo comes without a X Window System
There are no versions of SLAX that come with GNOME. If you want a Slackware based live CD distro running GNOME try GoblinX:

Does this come in any other desktop besides KDE, like Gnome?

This is a great program, or O/S! A few years ago I tried Ubuntu and didn't have any luck with booting it up and being able to delete or copy files, with this Slax, I was able to do it without any problems!
It worked great on a brand new Compaq Presario A9000 (core2duo, 2GB memory). that has Vista on it. The sound and graphic etc. all worked the first time booting it from a bootable CD image.
Excellent!

If you're rating/reviewing software
- rate it for what its meant to do and how it does it. Not for not doing something completely different.
- rate the software, not the concept of linux.
People here have agendas to fill - so they don't rate the software. They rate other things. Stick to the simple things: give THIS software a mark.
Slax is a cool project and very good software, saved my a** a few times when I had to boot virus infested windows system and salvage data.

Great stuff, nice way to show off Linux to someone who is not familiar with it, just carrry it on your USB stick and demo it.

sjc you don't seem to understand what SLAX is... why are you rating it?
A LiveCD is not designed to do the same things as a hard disk install. You can't even compare the two. Trying to compare SLAX and Ubuntu is like saying Monopoly is better than Halo because it doesn't require an Xbox, or saying Halo is better because it's a FPS.
LiveCDs (and USB installs) are designed to be able to pop into any computer and work with... online apps are best obviously since you don't have to save anything to disk, it's all stored online. They are great when you want to use someone else's computer without having to deal with programs you don't like (or even hidden viruses or keyloggers). And they're even better when you need to fix a machine that won't boot into the hard disk's OS or that you want to run a virus scan on without booting. In a more professional realm they could be used for forensics, although I imagine taking the HD and just plugging it into another PC is preferred in that area. And of course if you want to repartition your hard drive, using a LiveCD is, right now, your best option.

What happens when the power goes out? You lose all of your settings?
I'll stick with Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04.

I know little or nothing about Linux. I successfully failed to get Ubuntu to work. "It just didn't work", for me. Soooo... I thought I'd give SLAX a try. What an unexpected and pleasant surprise.
Although I haven't figured lots of things out yet, it seems to work quite well indeed. I'm not yet familiar with the OS. Anyway, it's got me excited in a very positive way.

Linux for the desktop is a non-starter and the people writing the kernal know it. It's time for Linux to either put up or shut up. I really don't think there is any interest in development for the desktop. Just read Con's interview on Linux Today and he has finally given up in despair.
