I use to love this software till the updates took forever and it was installing other things bogging down system resources and Malwarevytes kept identifying Malware being installed from this.

Later I also confirmed that with Hitman Pro and Bitdefender products

Interface getting on - Not too god at finding malware - Go for the free version & run on demand, I feel Malwarebytes is way ahead of this though.

This program badly needs an total interface update, what's with the ‘Use XP Style Menus’, & integrate into ‘Vista Security Centre’? It doesn't do well in catching malware either, I have a lifetime subscription so I do run it from time to time but it's far behind Mbam for example.

@coolticker, if you got the memory, why should you care how much it uses during scanning? It's 330mb's for me as well on my 2GB memory PC. I'd rather it have all the memory it wants while scanning for speed and accuracy. You'll get the memory back afterwards anyway. Just sayin'. I usually use it to full scan on every patch Tuesday, otherwise I just use the right click properties to scan individual files I might happen to download.

Sadly, not really worth buying since its real-time shield catches almost nothing. Its scanner, however, finds a TON of crap the others don't. Most typical A/Vs don't even look at tracking cookies, web bugs, etc. That's where this program shines. It also seems to work very well alongside your primary antivirus.

When a security application starts adding browsers as a basically hidden function it's time to start looking elsewhere - I really do not agree with hidden installs. It's now off my recommendation list, also recent tests I've looked at show it to be pretty poor at finding spyware.

Use SUPERAntiSpyware as passive along with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and ClamWin Antivirus to have a right click properties context menu to scan downloaded files.
As with any security scanning software, none will be 100% effective.

@gatorfan95... I didn't get the Chrome install on SAS's custom install. However, I did not allow the installer any internet access via my firewall(Comodo firewall). Maybe that's the reason.
Update: gatorfan95, OK, I gotcha now. Yea, an 'Express' install in this case would not be recommended. Avast AV was another that was installing Chrome without knowledge. Happened to me on version 7 when I gave it a try. I still like SAS regardless. I'll just have to be extra extra careful about installing ANY software nowadays.

gatorfan95

gatorfan95 reviewed v5.5.1012 on Jul 23, 2012

This is the last version I will download. The splash screen gives you a big green "Button" that says "Express Install". On a hunch I hit the much smaller, link like, "custom install" and sure enough, that piece of crap Google Chrome was hidden in there as an automatic install. This is a fairly nice little malware removal tool, however, I hate deceptive tactics used to trick you into installing a program you do not use or want. SHAME on the developers for doing this.

@ Zootopia3001: I didn't get it either, I refused to install the program after looking at the "custom install". My point is, they hid the fact that "Express Install" would put Chrome on your machine. I wont use their software again, as I have with other installers that try to pull this crap.

But for something to pay for eset security, it's just as good if not better then superantispyware plus you get tons more features and it does not cost much more. So if you are going free superantispyware is the way to go, if you are paying look else where like eset.

Ref johneberhardt@s review: I think the problemm is less with Superantispyware than Firefox. 6. When I updated from versiopn 5, it would not run Malwarebytes, Avast!, KeyScrambler (No addons or plugins). The latter even Firefox admit they can't yet handle. I then installed Superantispyware Free (which I had used and liked as much as Malwarebytes previously) and it works fine. (The same applies to Microsoft Security Essentials, installed to try to replace the excellent Avast!)

All was fine until I upgraded to IE9. It still running just fine until the latest version upgrade to SUPERAntispyware came out (last week?). However, after I installed the new version and after a system restart, IE 9 now always opens upon login startup and displays the SUPERAntispyware ad to pay $19.95 and the "homepage changed" warning box. I am running Windows 7- 64 bit home premium on an AMD Phenom II X6 1100T with 8 gig of RAM. In Summary, the latest free version has a bug that changes IE 9 homepage to blank, displays the "homepage changed" warning box and ends up in an endless loop with no solution. Does not seem to effect chrome or firefox. I am uninstalling and will try next version. I hope they get their act together.

Very rarely do I add comments on this website but, feel compelled to respond to the post by GURGLE.
He states that it is the "crappiest program" - how he arrives at this conclusion is beyond me. I have used it for several years, with different operating systems and it has always been fine.
He then states " I had to reinstall windows " - why on earth he should have had to do this is once again impossible to comprehend. Perhaps he has never heard of the add/remove programs option.
He then added " the startup of windows took two hours" - why it should have taken so long and why someone would be waiting that long, seems to indicate that he either doesn't understand windows or has an ulterior motive for slating this program.
At best I only conclude that there was some form of conflict with another program and at worse, he simply hasnt a clue about software.
I suggest you totally disregard his comments and try the program for yourself. Personally, I like it and regard it highly.

One of the better tools for getting rid of malware. However, it probably isn't a good idea to have the program set to autostart on every run. I've noticed it bogs down the system startup quite a bit, and nothing much will respond until the splash screen for this program has appeared.

So 4 stars overall, with the proviso mentioned above.

"Performance killing t**d"??? Seeing how this has no real time protection and no background processes running how can it possibly affect performance??
Only time it would be using resources is when scanning on demand. You say you have been a PC user for some time but you sure don't know much about them!

SAS is a very good scanner/remover, right up there with MBAM. Very useful if looking for a backup scanner or wanting to clean an infected machine.

If you want a thorough second-opinion about what may be hiding in your machine this is the best choice around. it doesn't just find them either. It's excellent at eliminating what it finds.

No reason not to have this software installed regardless of what main line of defense you prefer to use. This software is completely non intrusive.

The program DOES autoupdate itself. I've often seen a message box appear in the corner on startup that an update is available. On clicking it, various components will be downloaded and where necessary it will ask to reboot to complete the update. A check can be forced by right-clicking the systray icon and clicking the update option there. Once completed, the program will have magically gone from, say, 4.20 to 4.21.

correct me if I am wrong, but this as a freeware app is a little misleading, in that it runs in the system tray and in the background, and remains running in the background, even if you exit from the system tray, yet it's not providing any realtime protection unless you pay for it. So why the running applications if you're not protecting anything? I've left it running for a couple weeks now thinking that it was fine because it's not much memory use and it's offering protection, but then I happened to notice the real time option in the menu because I wanted to see what version I had installed and saw that it's a pro feature. After accidentally opening a file unsandboxed instead of sandboxed, I recently got a nasty little Vundo bug on my PC. My system restore was corrupted, and I was preparing to reinstall XP.

Then, I took a shot at SUPERAntiSpyware---and it cleared the problem almost immediately. None of the other scanners I used did a thing, not SpyBot, not AdAware, not Bazooka (although, that's pretty useless for anything). SUPER did it all hassle-free. Found the files and removed them---none of that, "we found the file, but can't delete it because it's in use" nonsense. My PC was back to normal in no time at all, and SUPER gained a new loyal user.

To that review who gave a 3 and simlpy stated "average," I'd love to see a better reason for that adjective. In my experience, SUPER worked well above average.

I give it a 4, only because I've only needed to use it the once, so I can't vouch for its ability to find everything. What I can vouch for is that it's the ONLY product I tried that worked for me. It saved me from my own admittedly stupid and reckless mistake, and for that I'm extremely thankful. As a free scanner, this one's a no-brainer. Get it and hold onto it.

This is one of several very good tools to scan, detect and remove spyware from your system.

The user interface is professional looking, I just wish they would change the programs icon....it makes it look like one of those fake programs that actually puts more spyware on your system.

There is NO one-good-tool to run on demand or to keep resident to catch all of the many variants of spyware that are out there. This program + A-squared + Ad-Aware and some cleaner programs such as Crap Cleaner (CC) and Advanced Windows Care will help for most cases.

And, oh... try Spyware Blaster to set up a defense mechanism on your system. It's very unintrusive, but remeber to update it's database often.

In the past we used Spybot and Adaware to get rid of spyware from customers computers. On more than one occasion updated version of SB and AA missed rather large amounts of spyware. We download this, update it, and let it loose. It finds and deletes ALL of the spyware (files, registry entries, etc).

It is an on demand scanner, which I prefer. By default it wants to take over a little more than I like (guard home page, load on startup, etc), but a careful install and quick HiJackThis and all is good. Once installed the program can be copied to a USB drive or CD so no install is necessary to clean up other machines.

Tried to repair the infection, and it refused unless I "regi$tered". Since it has no realtime scanner, the rules-based, on-demand scanner and removal would have to be equal to or better than the rest to make the program worthwhile. It isn't. Even though most anti-virus products claim to detect and clean out spyware/malware infections, they either don't or they do a rather substandard job. I can't speak for the real-time version that requires purchase, but the on-demand scanning module of SUPERAntiSpyware coupled with Sybot Search and Destroy make a great compliment to any reputable anti-virus and realtime antispyware product.

Here's a good AS, I do recommend using. How Ever it has a basic UI. I do like this one though. It makes it easier to keep your system clean of spyware.

I do use it in conjunction with other AS though. Don't trust AS as much. Don't let my comment stop your intrest in this. D/l it, and try it. Maybe you have something different to add

A good post and a good software. Just good. I tested this on 3 occasions and not a single catch. Maybe my system is so clean or maybe not the better one I supposed.

Nice software...
doesn't find any harmful stuff on my VISTA-Computer... Hopefully this fact is a good sign for the VISTA-Safety and the other proggies I've installed! Will go on using it in future!

Exelent prog! I've used it for many months, and it catches things that Ad-Aware, SnD, zoft, and Spyware Terminator do not. It's almost perfect!

Keep up the good work guys! I

This program is the best spyware removal program out there. I first got this when it came with my SuperAdBlocker and didn't realize it was a stand alone product until later. I recommend this to all of my friends if they have ANY spyware issues.

This software also works with the fileresearchcenter. (www.fileresearchcenter.com) That site can scan your machine through an ActiveX component and look for spyware there. The technologies seem to be shared between the two.

This is a case of a big thing coming in a small package. I wouldn't use anything else.

Very very good detection rates and awesome customer support. Malwaretest lab is a joke and has been proven to be a very poor tester over the years.

Also it is a true freeware, there is a 15 day trial of the PRO edition and there is also a 100% free version.

Ran the program and it found stuff my other A/spyware program had not, also promoted 3 (so far) trojans sitting in the backgorund ot be caught by my AV program

Its free, it works no contest

A great program. Free, awesome. And malware-test lab is total BS. For many reasons. Don't believe it, this is one of the best. I'd give it 5 but I don't like the interface that much.

hurzx reviewed v3.5.1016 on Jan 18, 2007

According to Malware-Test Lab detection rates is as low as 23.5%. What does SUPER means ? Second, it's not freeware...

For good Anti-Malware products, have a look at the test-results here :

http://www.malware-test.com/antispyware.html

After so many testing and changes, I retained Spywareblaster and Ewido micro-scanner, which has the same database as AVG 7 ( behind Comodo Firewall). And I use Opera to browse. I feel relatively safe and hardly get infections despite an intensive surf.

Please do not put a program like this on as "Free-Ware"....It is TIME LIMITED TO 15 DAYS.
I am sure we pay after that. To bad for this type of disception.

SUPERAntiSpyware found a "Trojan.Malware" lurking in a program called "ERRORNUKERINSTALLER.EXE" during the first "Complete System Scan" I ran. This scan took 52 minutes and the results were well worth it, considering I was watching CNN the whole time. You can also opt for a "Quick Scan" or a "Custom Scan" which take less time. Both Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal and Spybot - Search & Destroy missed the trojan in their scans, so I recommend it as a free addition to your anti-spyware arsenal. The only minus I found is that if you try to activate its "Real-Time Protection" feature you get a nag screen to upgrade to SUPERAntiSpyware Professional. On the plus side, the free version does have an automatic update feature which some other free anti-spyware programs make you pay for. All in all, a nice little program that does what it is supposed to do.

Firstly, be aware that BetaNews has erred in its description of the program. The FREE version does NOT have a 15-timeout; only the trial download of the pro version does.

So far, my only real complaint against this application would be its relative slowness. I'd advise against using its most thorough scanning options, unless you actually suspect a spyware infestation.

Other than that it seems fine. The interface is good, having no glitz and lots of user-selectable options.
