This is commercial-grade software. TONS of well-done abilities. Awesome FTP and web front end file server. If you don't need all this by all means stop whining and use one of the free or cheap servers. Otherwise, serv-u is undeniably full-featured and great.

Absurdly expensive for an FTP server. I'll stick with Filezilla Server or Pureftpd.

Also, not sure why betanews lists it as "Shareware $49.95", because the cheapest version available (which is missing most of the features) is four times that at $199.95...and that's without the upgrade and support plans.

It just keeps getting better!! They have added everything I requested in previous versions. Full UNICODE support, SSH public key auth, DLL integration support, user added events for emailing info to the users, and a ton of other stuff. Just check out the release notes list: http://www.serv-u.com/releasenotes/. Not much out there that comes close in terms of features at this price point. Just take a look at Globalscape and IpSwitch prices for their high end server. Not even close.

Bloated. Slow. Overpriced. Lacking features.

Need an ftp to manage remotely - ioFTPD is #1 choice. Need solid ftp server for home use - RaidenFTPD is the best way to go (simply because "gui" [if we can even call it that] of io is so terrible).

io is free an amazingly flexible. Raiden is not, BUT for the price of Serv-U you can get 2 Raiden licences AND Serv-U doesn't even offer half the features Raiden's packing.

Conclusion: stay away.

P.S. $199 for the cheapest version?! Are you people out of your ffin mind? O_o

One of my huge concerns regarding v7 is still here in v8 : "Default rules cannot be edited or deleted. Create a new limit to override a default one."

At least, the speed is much better than it used to be in v7 : +1
But *that* little annoyance will prevent me from upgrading : -1
Pricing (considering v8 is what v7 should have been in the first place) : -1

uberfly

uberfly reviewed v8.0.0.1 on Mar 24, 2009

It's a good server, really good, but the pricing is just beyond stupid. The true price for the basic Serv-U is now 499.95, NOT the 49.95 shown above. Good going Rhinosoft.

As a long time user of Serv-U, I was a initially a little upset with the drastic changes from ver.6 to 7. But once I wrapped my head around it and realized how much more powerful it is... I can't see going back. The benefits far outweigh the negatives. The interface takes awhile to get used to but when you think about what is really going on it's amazing. The whole frontend is done in a web browser which makes sense for remote configuration and maintenance. A little slow for large amounts of users but there is ways to handle that. Just set up ODBC DB. The basic web client is also fantastic. I no longer have to walk clients through setting up and configuring a ftp client. Saves me and my users time and $$. And by the way, the FTP Voyager JV plug-in is worth it's weight in gold. Just my $.02

I'm sick of seeing this piece of crap posted. Just as I'm sick of idiots who sit down and change a good product just for the sake of change itself. Not easier to use (quite the opposite), not faster (quite the opposite), just different, to help justify a version bump.

PRAY TO GOD YOU DO NOT NEED SALES SUPPORT!
When I was setting up a new account, there was an incorrect email address entered. Since the order confirmation never arrived via email, I assumed the order did not go through and resubmitted the order a week later. This time, I received confirmation of the order via email (no typos). When I received my AMEX bill, there were two charges. I just spent 10 minutes on the phone with “Thomas” in Sales, who informed me he cannot help me with the double charge. He informed me that he could see the incorrect email address in his system, but it wasn't his problem. He further informed me that he is the highest authority I can speak to, and that I “waited too long” to try to cancel the first initialization. Never mind that I was not aware it had gone through until I received my AMEX bill. There was no concern in his voice -- it was matter-of-fact: I was out of luck. The product is great, but if you ever plan on Sales Support - I HIGHLY recommend you buy from someone else.

shroom

shroom reviewed v7.2.0.0 on Jul 23, 2008

v7.2 is slightly faster. But there is still no comparison with the v6.x serie.

They also still prevent you from modifying the default rules and ask you to create another ones to override them. Sticking with v6 until they change that.

Accounts' rules are still messy (basic rules can't be deleted/modified, you need to create a second one to override it) and interface is still WAY TOO slow.
Web access through Firefox/IE (doesn't work with Opera !) isn't properly handled too : inactivity timeout while downloading and not being disconnected after closing the browser.

Oh my, oh my is this a disappointment. I used and was happy with Serv-U 6.x, but this is a pile of dung. Listen to what shroom says about the front-end, because it's sssssssssslow indeed. For me, it's simply too annoying to put up with. When the app you're using needs to employ a "please wait" progress indicator each time you click somewhere, you know you're using a piece of garbage.

Rather than just slow, it's also much more difficult than it needs to be to navigate.

And what's this? They put my configuration files in the installation directory?

Back to Xlight FTP Server...

Diam0nd

Diam0nd reviewed v7.0.0.2 on Apr 9, 2008

It's an OK ftpd. Nothing especially good or bad to say about it.

For those looking for the best FTPd for windows I'd suggest you give a try to those 3:
1. ioFTPD - best for a server that you manage remotely, since it doesn't really have a GUI. Those available are kinda crappy.
2. RaidenFTPD. Best ftpd for a both a home and remote server. It's amazingly easy to use and has all the advanced features like zipscript for instance BUILT IN already.
4. GENE6 - simply a good #3.

I personally prefer RaidenFTPD. Solid as a rock, has advanced stats, ziprscript, amazing UNPnP support (working behind a router) and a TON of more stuff.

After playing around with the new built in front-end file server (accessible via a browser), I'm officially a fan-boy. This is really great stuff. Rhinosoft has always made top-quality software. Yea, the new interface drags a bit due to it being browser-based, and it's totally different than previous versions interface-wise, but I'll take it based on what's new. Really good stuff - sets a new bar for ftp servers.

This is the best ftp server i have tried and i have tried many of them. Clear intuitive interface, logical and easy to configurate (even for a newbie), good help file, comes from a professional software house (Rhinosoft), very good support and not too expensive price tag. Ís actively developed and has been around long time enough as bugs have been fixed.

Serv-U is the most stable FTP server I've used to date on a Windows box, and deserves kudos for support of excellent security options (encryption and such) and excellent bandwidth controls, but its UI is... well... not so hot. Definitely a steep learning curve for a "noob".

thezelda

thezelda reviewed v6.3.0.0 on Jun 13, 2006

Excellent server, and deals with load well.

Problem is that it is priced incorrectly and has turned from a grass roots single guy super inexpensive project into an overpriced ftpd. Linux/UNIX ftpds are free and can handle astonishing loads ( http://vsftpd.beasts.org/ ) (Check out vsftpd, its fast, free and supports: Virtual IP configurations , Virtual users , Standalone or inetd operation , Powerful per-user configurability , Bandwidth throttling , Per-source-IP configurability , Per-source-IP limits , IPv6 , Encryption support through SSL integration and more)

As far as "conflicting" with a Linksys router, the software doesn't implement TCP, it just uses it. As long as port forwarding is working properly and Windows TCP isn't violating any RFCs, then it should work.

This program is near-perfect feature-wise. However, it does not limit upload resume to original uploader. Program should keep a record of who uploaded which file in the last 7 days (filename uploaded, username and ip mask of uploader - in a db file) and give the option to refuse upload resumption (corruption) UNLESS the IP mask is identical or the account name is identical (or both). That way you can safely offer an "upload/upload" account (or "anonymous") and limit resumption based on ip-mask (XX.XX.XX.yy). This way, also, you can allow only account "JohnDoe" to resume files which started by JohnDoe (based on uploader account name). .............. Some siteops deliberately disable upload resume due to the lack of the security feature mentioned above.

Because Jgaa updates Warftpd like once every 30 years.

Serv-u 3 is one of the most advanced ftp servers for windows right now with its capabilities that the other servers just do not offer. Although it may be a little difficult for some to unlock it to it's fullest potential or even aware what it can do, the help and online help is very well detailed.

I give it a 5 for it's ability to set up virtual paths without restrictions to the users home path, for being able to run as a service and keeping the admin tool seperate (good on system resources) like it should and not like an application (Bpftpd), running multiple servers within one service, and remote administration. A significant improvement over 2.5.

I bought Deerfield.com's FTP Serv-U a while back and have been completely satisfied with it... it was a very low price, but it has more features than any other FTP Server I could find. And the features are easy to use - very intuitive - I didn't have to read a big huge help file everytime I wanted to figure out how to do something. I could pretty much figure out everything without directions...

Great, helpful reviews (not!). Now if those people would actually submit those bugs and tell me what's so 'terrible' I could make it a better program. My E-mail address comes with the beta.

So many bugs.. so little joy .. just wait until more bugs are found and removed.. no worth for trying this beta

They dont appear to have done enough to this program to warrant an upgrade considering the previous version was easier to setup and looked better.

Great except for 1 thing the user info window does'nt show the whole File/Path of the connected user(downloader)

Danone

Danone reviewed v2.5g on Oct 29, 2000

I give it only a four because the ONE missing feature in the program is RUN AS SERVICE, and not through other utilities.

controler

controler reviewed v2.5g on Oct 28, 2000

why is this listed as beta.ALL beta software should be fully funtional and in NOT shareware!!!
Will this software stop the people we see on the new TV show Level 9?

Serv-U has everything I could want in a FTP Server. It was simple enough that I had my FTP Server up and running within 10 minutes... I dont want to be an FTP guru, i just wanted to get a FTP server up and running and that is what serv-u gave me.

Cool. But I also use G6... It's just better.

I used this for a while and many other to finally they are ok, but then I started using G6 FTP Server www.gene6.com. It's great easy to use and very powerful as well! It has all the controls and features an administrator could want. Inclusing adcanced remote lonin's to do maintencnce from another location! And it supports windows link (shortcuts) to direct people on your site around to other directories and files on your hard drive without the user knowing it... that's way cool!

Not the best, not the worst, not very intuitive.
Lot of great options missing…

The best FTP-daemon available at the moment. Very easy to use although very powerful. Might not have as many functions as War-FTP but is also not so buggy and as said before much more easy to configure!
