Publisher's Description

ProMEPIS Linux is a Linux OS based on Ubuntu that can be run from your CD drive without installation. Where it shines is its easy, 100% "point and click" installation, and automatic detection of not only "normal" computer hardware but also popular webcams, the latest wireless network cards, "Winmodems" that usually work only with Windows, digital cameras, scanners, and other devices.

It's probably pretty good, but I'll never know. I tried many times, but it wouldn't completely load and froze near the end of the attempted installations.

Regrettably, Catchpole, your knowledge of Linux seems to be non-existent and your comments help no one save, perhaps, for making you look like a "big man" in, only, your own eyes. Bluntly you are nothing but a troll. Simply Mepis isn't a bad distribution by any means but what it gains in some customisation of the *buntu code base it, IMHO, loses by having a lesser number of expert users to turn to should you need guidance to solve a problem. New users would be better off, again IMHO, if they stuck with a main stream *buntu and more experienced users might be better suited to Arch or other distributions. Still, the code is good and it is an excellent OS thus a 5 star rating.

finnlayer your review is an unfair assessment of this distro. SM Linux is not for people with your needs or wants i.e. games. Yes, Windows is better suited for that.

This is a good distro. It's simple to install and worked with my wireless when some other distros would not. I would recommend this for the first time Linux user.

Free software , good , not much is free and worth trying out now a day.

Yet this operating system don't do the job i would like it to ?

I like to be able to play games , most of all the many titles that you can play on windows systems.

I don't see much in between all OS going to date, reason for it...

Most of all system,s do much the same job, printing, scanning, internet search, play DVD, i like to see good titles for Linux , like you do on windows.

I be more interested in Linux if i could do what i can do on windows, just Linux seems far off for now , but i see it is becoming close for Linux to be a a much better Os in time, just needs more fuel to drive it forward's and titles i can go the shop for, like i do when i want a program or game for windows.

Yep free - what do you want free lollies too.

I've use several iterations of this software. Good stuff. For those having trouble logging on... the logons and passwords are, and always have been.

Been a microsoft guy since the old dos days. Watched windows from 3.1 till vista more is not better. I find simply mepis to be the only linux distro to enable me to get past the the big changes between windows and linux. I tried ubuntu, mandrive, mint and ran away. Figured I would give mepis a try. WOW it found my hardware installed the drivers and I had a OS that I could use. Has this great app synaptic that allows you to install a ton of great stuff "games too" with a point and a click. Mepis is not dos and from what I can see will take a leap of a learning curve to use the terminal. Takes me back to command prompts during the good old dos days. Just have to learn the language. Glad I found Mepis

It's clear that nincompoops without so much as a modicum of tech savvy should be reviewing an OS that doesn't need to be activated.

This is one of my favorite distros out there. The built in support for all kinds of hardware right from the get go is impressive. As an example, Mepis has built in support for more display monitors than any other OS I've seen. The networking support is second to none. These are the kinds of easy things that the Ubuntu's, which purport to be novice friendly, should really look at Mepis as an example.

Mepis is rock solid. Believe it or not that strength leads me to what I feel is downside (IMO) - the extremely conservative development path. I'm almost seriously wondering if we'll ever see KDE 4 in Mepis. On the other hand it looks like they're finally making the leap in upgrading the kernel.

Overall if you value "it just works" over anything cutting edge then I couldn't recommend Mepis more.

like so many linux distributions, it is totally user unfriendly asking me to logon as DEMO with no clue as to what the password should be ... Only and idiot designs a system that way.
Screen reolution is capped out 1024 800nmwithu no clear way to change it.

Only mandriva has addressed thes issue partially

Might just be the best distro.I have tried. Only judging by using the live cd, this latest version of Mepis was solid across the board. Plus I like the new desktop view. The next old pc i come across to work on will def. get this as its os.

Pretty good. Spent a couple hours fooling around with it. No probs at all. Always liked Mepis. Its one of the few Linux distro's i feel comfortable trying out. If i ever dump windows with another pc, this os is def. on the list to replace it.
