Publisher's Description

ProMEPIS Linux is a Linux OS based on Ubuntu that can be run from your CD drive without installation. Where it shines is its easy, 100% "point and click" installation, and automatic detection of not only "normal" computer hardware but also popular webcams, the latest wireless network cards, "Winmodems" that usually work only with Windows, digital cameras, scanners, and other devices.

Regrettably, Catchpole, your knowledge of Linux seems to be non-existent and your comments help no one save, perhaps, for making you look like a "big man" in, only, your own eyes. Bluntly you are nothing but a troll. Simply Mepis isn't a bad distribution by any means but what it gains in some customisation of the *buntu code base it, IMHO, loses by having a lesser number of expert users to turn to should you need guidance to solve a problem. New users would be better off, again IMHO, if they stuck with a main stream *buntu and more experienced users might be better suited to Arch or other distributions. Still, the code is good and it is an excellent OS thus a 5 star rating.

finnlayer your review is an unfair assessment of this distro. SM Linux is not for people with your needs or wants i.e. games. Yes, Windows is better suited for that.

This is a good distro. It's simple to install and worked with my wireless when some other distros would not. I would recommend this for the first time Linux user.

Free software , good , not much is free and worth trying out now a day.

Yet this operating system don't do the job i would like it to ?

I like to be able to play games , most of all the many titles that you can play on windows systems.

I don't see much in between all OS going to date, reason for it...

Most of all system,s do much the same job, printing, scanning, internet search, play DVD, i like to see good titles for Linux , like you do on windows.

I be more interested in Linux if i could do what i can do on windows, just Linux seems far off for now , but i see it is becoming close for Linux to be a a much better Os in time, just needs more fuel to drive it forward's and titles i can go the shop for, like i do when i want a program or game for windows.

Yep free - what do you want free lollies too.

Been a microsoft guy since the old dos days. Watched windows from 3.1 till vista more is not better. I find simply mepis to be the only linux distro to enable me to get past the the big changes between windows and linux. I tried ubuntu, mandrive, mint and ran away. Figured I would give mepis a try. WOW it found my hardware installed the drivers and I had a OS that I could use. Has this great app synaptic that allows you to install a ton of great stuff "games too" with a point and a click. Mepis is not dos and from what I can see will take a leap of a learning curve to use the terminal. Takes me back to command prompts during the good old dos days. Just have to learn the language. Glad I found Mepis

It's clear that nincompoops without so much as a modicum of tech savvy should be reviewing an OS that doesn't need to be activated.

This is one of my favorite distros out there. The built in support for all kinds of hardware right from the get go is impressive. As an example, Mepis has built in support for more display monitors than any other OS I've seen. The networking support is second to none. These are the kinds of easy things that the Ubuntu's, which purport to be novice friendly, should really look at Mepis as an example.

Mepis is rock solid. Believe it or not that strength leads me to what I feel is downside (IMO) - the extremely conservative development path. I'm almost seriously wondering if we'll ever see KDE 4 in Mepis. On the other hand it looks like they're finally making the leap in upgrading the kernel.

Overall if you value "it just works" over anything cutting edge then I couldn't recommend Mepis more.

While I have not installed it, I find the Live-CD to be working almost flawlessly. I say almost because it is plagued with a problem of identifying and properly using the sound card of my laptop. Admittedly most Linux Distros have this problem, so you would think someone would have figured it out and installed the fix as a matter of course.

Sure, I can look up the issue and find lots of suggestions on getting HDA 883 working with Linux, but a true newbie at computers (not just Linux as I am) would simply get upset and turn away.

What EarlyMorningHours said. Looks great, very stable, boots fast, and is stupid-easy to install and use. If only Windows came with this much software included, and were hundreds of dollars cheaper (I still wouldn't buy it).

EarlyMorningHours

EarlyMorningHours reviewed v7.0 on Dec 24, 2007

After using several distributions, this one has become my favorite. I've also come to prefer KDE over Gnome and really can't wait to see the next generation of KDE mature. Device support in Mepis is one of the primary reasons that it is at the top of my list and it makes me wonder why others can't do the same. While it's not perfect and could still use a little more polish, I think that Mepis will start to gain in popularity. Very well done.

Don't be scared because it's different. If you're a Windows user it will certainly take some getting use to, but anything new will. This is truly a powerful OS and, in my opinion, a better way of computing.

I've used this distribution several times in the past year to repartition windows XP and 2003 NTFS filesystems. I find it rather ironic that I have to use Linux to do this--because up until Vista-- there has not been a free or Microsoft included repartition tool for Windows workstations and servers that didn't have severe workarounds.

In all cases the repartition worked perfectly.

Is Linux ready to be the desktop of choice for average computer users? I don't think so. Hardware can be a bear and being told to edit config files is just plain scary and confusing for John and Jane Sixpack. However, hardware detection has improved over the years and bootable distros get it right most of the time which is good. I always carry three bootable distros with me when travelling: SLAX, Knoppix and Mepis. Invariably, one of them will detect all of the hardware on a machine if the others don't. Why do I carry them with me? The answer is simple: I don't get paid to fix a Windows computer on the road just so its not infected and useable. Windows is a good OS and Windows 2000, which is my preference, is fast, stable and secure if treated with kindness but people aren't kind to their Windows OS most of the time and will happily install or click on anything that looks shiny. With a bootable distro like Mepis I don't have to deal with it and that makes me a happy boy. Perfect? No. Saves me headaches from time to time? You bet.

Been a fan of SimplyMEPIS for years and it seems to keep getting better and better. I don't know if it's the answer to 'all our problems' as stated in a derogatory manner by another reviewer... but it's certainly one answer to taking control of one's own computer and using an OS that just seems to work. It's an excellent alternative to expensive, bloated, commercial OS's. And for the price, can't be beat.

I'm giving this software a rating based on my opinion of the software and my experience with it, and not based on my opinion of the people that like this software.

RedBoar

RedBoar reviewed v(6.9.70) 7.0 Beta 2 on Aug 25, 2007

I want to reiterate the good reviews and to also say that although MEPIS has a scant website and without the MEPISlovers forums would have almost no support, it hung in there as one of the top distros for years. It went back to its roots by using Debian as a base which is a major plus. It took a while for the new version to come out and the Ubuntu Dapper based kernel never played well with Athlon 64 CPUs. I have the 64-bit version of the beta and besides some hiccups with fonts and ATI driver support, I know this version will be their best yet!

As for the M$ mark and whiner with his bad Linux review, who wants to fabricate and prepare his "I spent 30 minutes trying to get X to work" award?

Simply Mephis works good as "Live" or install to hdd. Their hardware detection has improved considerably over the past yr, in fact the whole distro has improved a great deal. As one who has 14 distros installed I can honestly say that this is a good 1 to watch & use.

I agree with zridling's comments about robmanic, he's a cretin & someone should have drove the bung in before he turned 6yrs.

zridling

zridling reviewed v(6.9.70) 7.0 Beta 2 on Aug 24, 2007

Wow, robmanic44, thank you for that completely irrelevant statement. Maybe you don't know enough to use GNU/Linux, or maybe you haven't heard of distros like PCLinuxOS, Linux Mint, Zenwalk, Ubuntu, or SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, who do all the work for you.

And if you can't use those, I guarantee you can't use Windows.

robmanic44

robmanic44 reviewed v(6.9.60) 7.0 Beta 1 on Aug 22, 2007

If is their is a commonality among Linux OSs, it's the tendency to universally praise all distributions. They fail to see the irony of their constant blasting of Microsoft Windows as a useless OS sold by a bunch of ethical and moral pigmies, while they push a bunch of OSs which have as their probable users people who have as much chance of understanding their use as I have of becoming King of the Cannibal Isles.

At least, with the old distros, you knew you were in for a struggle just to get X configured properly. Now you get distros that install in 45 minutes or less, but then what? I mean you have something on your system, but damned if you know what. How do you make changes or download needed software or drivers? Where do you go for help in solving your problems?

In their failure to warn the user of the problems ahead they are as morally and ethically bankrupt as anyone at Microsoft.

SimplyMEPIS Linux live cd is the only Linux distro that has run without a problem on all my computers, at home, my laptop, work etc. And now with Beryl integrated (choose it at login - or not) it's my only Linux distro I have installed to my hard drive.

If you havent seen or heard of Beryl give it a shot. I like the functional eye candy, and like SimplyMEPIS itself you can tell top-notch work goes into the developement of it.

With almost weekly updates the SimplyMEPIS people are really working hard for us!

I switched to SimplyMEPIS from Mandrake... err... Mandriva. After the disappointing performance from the last few Mandriva releases, I felt it was time to change distros. MEPIS works a treat! It found all my peripherals (including my nVidia GeForce 6200 -- just changed the settings to use the new nVidia drivers) and got me up and running in minutes.

Sure, there's a little learning curve going to a Debian-based distro from a Red Hat-based one, but that shouldn't be a problem for most people. Mepis is strongly based on Ubuntu (or rather Kubuntu, since Mepis uses KDE), but at least Mepis gives you an actual ROOT account.

Best part, the distro is a live disc. You can try it before you install, and you can install it from the live system. Definitely 5-stars in my book.

RedBoar

RedBoar reviewed v6.0 on Jul 25, 2006

Everything works out of the box... Unless you have a NVidia card, which you have to edit the xorg.conf file directly after you install the driver, which then fails and bumps you back to the terminal login screen. I'll stick with Ubuntu.

I am a big fan of Linux live CD distros but they can be very spotty when it comes to hardware support. That's important to me as I use them to recover files from toasted Windows computers. While MEPIS is a great distro and works perfectly on my machines at home I have mixed success using it on the machines I am repairing. Sometimes on some very standard configurations. So, while it is a very capable operating system you may experience hardware issues you won't have with the Kanotix CD or The Knoppix DVD.

I spent some time debating whether I would use SimplyMEPIS or Ubuntu as my Linux distro of choice. Although Ubuntu seems to have a cleaner interface, I believe SimplyMEPIS has better hardware detection. I was pleasantly surprised that it detected all devices on my HP laptop out of the box. I'm still tied to Windows due program compatibility issues with work, but keep my SimplyMEPIS Live CD close at hand. If you have never used Linux before, download the SimplyMEPIS Live CD (the OS boots from CD) and give it a shot. Its easy enough to use for newbies and has plenty of advanced features for experienced users.

I installed Mephis 3.3 yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was.
The install is very straight forward. Anyone new to linux should have no trouble. There are enough install features for advanced users as well.
The choice of 'nvidia driver' during the install is something unique and I wish some of the other big, popular distros did this.
I rebooted to a fully functional Mephis desktop in a matter of minutes.
I have not had time to explore and test everything but the software lineup is impressive and thoughtful.
These Debian based distros seem way ahead of the competition in regards to ease of use, software packaging and installation, and hardware support.
Kanotix is another contender I've enjoyed, but not quite as easy to install for a newbie. In fact, the 64 bit Kanotix is awesome.
Mephis is a distro for the masses.
Great work Mephis!
