[edit to original comment] I was a little critical of SmartFTP recently. However, after trying numerous other FTP clients, I must say that despite the occasional bug in SmartFTP, it remains on of the most easy to use FTP applications out there. It is lacking in some areas, but its UI is nicely integrated with explorer and very convenient. I find that I work faster with SmartFTP than with other FTP clients.

I hope to see more active development on it in the future, including a big QA check to ensure that all known errata is fixed. Then it will be perfect and well worth the cost.

I mean, FileZilla can do the same things, got the same ugly GUI, but unlike SmartFTP FZ is free. So why pay for something that you can have for free?

This posting is way out of date, since version 3.0 is out now. That's what I just ran a trial of--very briefly.

A room full of drunk, retarded monkeys couldn't come up with a buggier mess than SmartFTP. It took me about 3 minutes to find annoying, reproducible bugs.

The only people who seem to do QA are freeware developers. Unfortunately, they're also the ones who are least interested and/or able to add features and documentation to their programs--perhaps because they're busy doing QA (which, I fully acknowledge, must come first).

As a nice little bonus, SmartFTP leaves a slew of CLSID keys and other crap in the registry and on the file system after it has been [COUGH] "uninstalled".

There's no excuse for commercial software to be this pathetic. I work for a software vendor--no I won't say who--but they'd NEVER release crap like this.

I'm not sure I see anything that FTPRush has that SmartFTP doesn't, other than a surprising $29.95 price tag (who pays for FTP software anymore?).

SmartFTP has everything you need and is rock solid. The GUI can be a little overwhelming in some spots when you first see it, but you don't have to use all of it if you don't want to (especially some of the queue features).

It has a nice Office 2003 a-like GUI. It works just fine. I prefer this over the priced FlashFXP.

The only thing I cant understand is why this is listed as shareware. It should be listed as likeware. If you like it, i suppose they want you to pay for it. Its free! Only other freeware ftp client I cant think of that is decent is Filezilla.

SmartFTP for me thank you.

I used this program for a long while, but always found there were some issues with it. Usability level was an issue as well - there are a few programs out there with layouts which are nicer on the eyes - FlashFXP for example. The fact that it is free for personal use, gave it an extra point.

i have never found a better ftp client than this one

this WOULD get a 5 but there are constant updates to the program (bugfixes) and upgrading is not automatic - if this program has automatic update checks and downloads and installs (so basically hands free for the user, like firefox or something) it would be the perfect ftp client
aside from that, no complaints, this is by far the best available ftp client

The SmartFTP site does not refer to the software as "freeware". It uses the term "unlicensed", and says the cost is "free", which is all accurate. That said, I hate this type of software licensing scheme. If you have to try to annoy people into registering your software, it probably sucks.

The nag screen is a nuisance. If you are a personal, educational, or non-commercial user, why not have a choice to say so on installation, then there would be no need for it. The UI is a little confusing, especially for someone coming from another FTP program, but it seems to do its job effectively.

Unless you’re actually a programmer and actually improve the functions in the open source software, it really doesn’t matter if it's open source... You shouldn’t give a perfectly good program a bad rating because it's not open source. People have to make money somehow, they can't all just make things free, don't see any coffee shops handing out free coffee all the time, they can't afford to be buying the coffee and paying for employees so you can have a free cup of coffee, same thing with software, they can't be paying programmers to make free programs...

Give it up already, go back to freeware or just end this software.

This program used to be freeware, then one day they changed it to shareware. Any software company that does that kinda thing will suffer the same fate that SmartFTP is suffering now.

Filezilla all the way! In fact Open Source all the way! Microsoft cannot buy Open Source projects out, someone will just re-release the compiled code under a new name. So Open Source = the death of Microsoft, and I can assure you that they know it too.

I'll go one step further and say this, I will not even use any software anymore than is not open source. There how do you like that?

Yes I changed my review into a rant on open source, so what? SmartFTP sucks BECAUSE its closed source, nuff said.

Great FTP program, stable, a great interface that doesn't look like it was coded by someone that thought GUI are just a trend. Free for personal use and after using both FileZilla and SmartFTP for months SmartFTP wins with it's ease of use.

Ignore anyone complaining about the micro-updates as those are beta/dev builds and you can (and should) skip those unless you really are going to beta test the application and submit feedback on issues found.

kashin

After two grueling months of "micro-updates" the final build is here! Check out these amazing new major changes taken directly from the official site's changelog;

Settings: Transfer->Performance dialog

Yup, that's all. Pretty incredible for two month's work, isn't it?

There are also a few minor updates and bugfixes listed, but they're just as pointless as the one above. My favorite being this one;

Support for Windows Vista Beta 1

Because we all want our buggy software to have support for an even buggier operating system, which won't be released for another year or so.

Cheers!

zridling

zridling reviewed v1.5.989.5 Beta on Aug 19, 2005

[THZGryphon]: "This app works great...[and even though] This app crashes on me every time I close it, however I still use it... it is the best FTP client available."

Actually I install and reevaluate SmartFTP with every major version, but with its micro-updates every other day, it seems as if these folks can't get it right, or built the program with buggy code and they spend every micro-update fixing another line of it. A review is nothing more than an opinion — some are informed, some are not. When I say I don't like the quirky interface, it's true to my experience. You may love it, and good for you.

Finally, don't call this freeware because what you get is software that expires on you and includes nags if you don't pay for it. That's not freeware, that's nuisanceware. But since I'm not evaluating this version, it gets a five-rating today.

THZGryphon

THZGryphon reviewed v1.5.989.5 Beta on Aug 19, 2005

This app works great. The GUI is pleasing to use unlike cheap software with visual basic interfaces that feel like they were designed in coding 101. You want something ugly and featureless, use another ftp client. You want to use enterprise software, pick SmartFTP.

So many useless reviews, most of them probably never even installed the application, like a lot of reviews on FileForum. zridling, what makes it the truth? Is it because you think it is? What if I think the truth is it looks great and you are wrong? It is a matter of opinion, not 'truth', grow up. In the past you didn't mention anything about the GUI and rated it well and now you hate it, it hasn't changed.

This app crashes on me every time I close it, however I still use it because, "in my opinion" (not truth), it is the best FTP client available for free for personal use.

zridling

zridling reviewed v1.5.989.4 Beta on Aug 18, 2005

Oh, but the truth hurts. SmartFTP would be loved if it would just change its interface. The incessant micro-updates are a quite humorous. FTP apps aren't as complicated as the SmartFTP folks make it out to be.

One of the worst clients of all time. Nothing new or unusual whatsoever. But the worst part is what I cant even call it a usual client (one that does what it supposed to without glitches). Why? Because you need a map to figure the gui of that "thing". Not that its complicated so much that its impossible to work with it, but looking at it makes me wanna puke and die. This GUI does not do what it supposed to: make the work with the prog easier. I wish they change it to same old command line rather.

I tried this client once again and probably for the last time. It does what other (free, I might add) ftp clients do, but not as well and with an extra hundred options which no one needs. The interface, much like the version numbering, is just ridiculous. Just freakin' call it 1.6 or 1.5.99 already!

PS. - I may try it again, when version 1.5.999.841.729.22 Beta 47 comes out.

greatgooglymoogly

greatgooglymoogly reviewed v1.5.988.52 Beta on Aug 6, 2005

Well, I decided to check it out again. For being a free client, it's pretty good indeed, but I still think they need to fix the UI. It's cumbersome and actually not so easy to use for beginners either (I'm not one of them). There really is no need to have different queue systems, and it does some things that really aren't intuitive. The transfer engine seems fine, although I do have experienced PASV anomalies that don't happen with some other clients.

Cut down on the slightly stupid UI and streamline it (something I rarely say, because that word is tainted) and you'll have one of the best free clients around!

I second the Filezilla comment. Definitely better than this offering. SmartFTP is somewhat better than some stuff out there (ie anything which doesn't support multithreaded connections), but these days people are also asking for FTPS etc support and opensource is king. SmartFTP had its day back in the late 90s when it first came out. Now it's simply mediocre.

darkuni reviewed v1.5 Build 988 Beta on Jun 15, 2005

I've always found SmartFTP to be a reliable, feature packed product whose only downside was that they charge too much for it. Of course, competitive programs cost similar - but I think the product would be FAR more attractive in the $24.95 vein.

A lot of people find problems with the interface, but frankly, after you get used to it - its far more efficient than most traditional FTP clients.

While I use SmartFTP for 'heavy lifting' jobs (namely off hours bulk pushes of large hunks of data - a snap thanks to the Queue timer), I've found that the best way to do FTP is integrated into my file manager (Directory Opus www.dopus.com) which allows me to do far more via FTP than FTP clients do as it focuses on FILE MANAGEMENT (imagine mass renaming a bunch of files on your FTP server using RegEx - that's the power I'm talking about). I can even do scripted uploads which I cannot do with SmartFTP (and I guarentee Filezilla doesn't do it either, so pipe down :)

SmartFTP is recommended for industrial work when you need it all. I dropped a star for the price tag.

One thing that SmartFTP handles better than any other FTP program (and the reason I deal with the nag screen) is the ability to use multiple FTP servers at the same time

darkuni

darkuni reviewed v1.1.984.9 Beta on Feb 10, 2005

SmartFTP is a very different approach to FTPing. Honestly, once you get used to it - you won't ever want to do it the old way anymore.

Where SmartFTP does fall from grace is a slightly too high price tag. With FTP client competition being where its at, $37 is just plain too high to make it an impulse buy for many people (esp. when you're trying to lure them away from another program AND ask them to use a new paradigm in FTP use). Sweet price point for this package? $24.95

Don't get me wrong. The program ROCKS, and I *DID* pay full price for it; but if they want to get more clientele, they will need to drop the price a bit.

This is probably still the best FTP software available, although the queue interface is clunky for servers that only allow a single connection and the right-click menus are getting a little out of control. It is ideal for multiple simultaneous FTP sessions.

HOWEVER, SmartFTP loses a point because of the totally pointless new "feature", the random pop-up. Why do I have to be constantly reminded of the fact that I do not need to register? "WARNING! Looks very, very nice. Could go on to be one of the best ftp clients. Impressive looking feature set. My only complaints so far are usability issues. I downloaded it for SecureFTP (explicit) and that worked fine once I realized it was set to tls and not ssl. A few first impressions, tho.. I have a LOT of sites I connect to, and the favorites looks ok. The grid method is fine, but the boxes are sized too wide, so it always scrolls even tho I run in 1280. I can resize em, i know. It needs to be more apparent that favorites is there, and more useable. See leapFtp and FileZilla for nice site managers, with popups on the main toolbar that let you select your site easily w/o opening another window. 'Favorites' is an IE term, so I didn't think to look there at first. Misc : Windows need to maximize inside the document area, not tile. The 'hilite as you mouse over' controls are nice sometimes, but they have been overused by a lot. Eye candy is ok, but they are distracting and serve no real purpose. It would be better if they weren't on all the lists, and other main areas. Over checkboxes and dropdowns is fine, but not on every pane of every window. Everything seems to need configuring. I guess if I was browsing for warez it would be nice to not have it open a local file window automatically, but for normal work I shouldn't need to change anything. The favorites editor could be condensed slightly, the way it currently is puts parts I use on every single site on seperate tabs. Again, see fileZilla. The 'local browser'/'site' style makes it pretty tedious to work with since, imho. I like to have them both side by side, and I def. don't need an explorer interface. If it were that way, or an option existsed, I would consider this program.

BEGIN PASTE: ...STATISTICS. The SmartFTP Group may keep statistics regarding your use of the SOFTWARE (e.g., IP address, number of daily unique users, certain system
information, daily ad displays and ad click-through).... END PASTE. OK, no biggie for me, but many folks get riled about their info being swiped. At least Mike came up front with it. There's also a blurp in the license.txt which hints that SmartFTP will become adware. The developer has a right to make money from his work, and that's fine. Too bad if the ads spoil the BEST FTP INTERFACE in the business!

Same problem here with Everquest. Graphics are all garbled. If you turn off Mip Mapping in the game it is playable, but graphics are still not good! Verant has verified there is a bug in the driver. It happens with the "updated" (Jan. 27)version of 1.04 also. Hope 3DFX fixes it soon!

This app has a beautiful interface, LOTS of features and the power required to become a power user's fav...
Might need getting used to its approach, but it made me uninstall all other FTP clients from my PC (well all except LeechFTP ;-)
