Email with people in the 21st century? This email client doesn't support any kind of layout, just plain text. Images are displayed as links turning newsletters into unreadable blobs of text. I've read it's intentionally not supported - too bad for a pretentious attitude ruining an otherwise great e-mail client.

This is a stupid program. It doesn't let you select language :(

I've been using the latest devs and noticed that it occasionally will use up to 400mb of memory for some reason. Sitting idle as it does most of the time it is using quite a bit atm around 80mb. If your looking for something super light weight checkout komamail. This has encryption which koma doesn't but you have to have gpg4win installed and running for that even to work.
Don't forget to down bsfilterw.exe (or other) if you are running it in portable mode. I did not realize the exe was even missing til just now and thought it was working. Beta 5 review

I still can't drag the total column. It stays stuck to the view pane and will disappear if the view pane is too close to the accts column.
BTW, in portable mode DO NOT simply overwrite the theme files. If you do and try to use it in an envirinment without gtk, it may not display a legible font at all.

In this latest awesome version I tried to change the theme and it did not work for some reason. So I deleted all but the MS-Windows folder theme and copied the theme I chose in gtk (metal) (just the root file gtkrc) to the ms-windows one and it worked perfect.
The only gripe is the total tab which is locked to the border it sits next to. If you pull the border too close to the folder tab, the total tab disappears. minor
Using it in portable mode.

This was such a breath of fresh air after trying some of the other email clients and I think I'll continue to use it ... hope it keeps up with the times.

The fastest and feature packed e-mail I have used. Supports IMAP too.

5 stars for being everything, and open source!

@anomoly: Thank you for letting know how to change the theme. I was scouring all over the web trying to figure how to get it done.

Switched from tbird to popeeper to this & couldn't be happier. Portable by simply renaming sample-sylpheed.ini. to sylpheed.ini. Theming is sooo easy. Install gtk+runtime environment with the theme selector. Copy it's themes from it's share folder to syplheed's same shared folder. Use selector in gtk and reopen sylpheed to see change. Pop peeper works great but no spam filter, no encryption, and no easy way to keep track of anything sent from it without doing a manual search.
You will have to edit & update your mail server settings & recreate acct in sylpheed if necessary. Gmail can now handle other accts like hotmail and sylpheed only needs the one. Impressive

This app is meant to be light, not beautiful, hence a 5/5. It works wonderful, even on dial-up connections with an older computer with 512 mb ram. Perfect for just email and nothing else.

i'm currently a thunderbird user, but I'm really looking for something just a bit more... well..err... interesting. Thunderbird is ok, but starting to bug me with it's speed and need for addons.

So I'm looking..

Does sylpheed really look the screenshot, because it's fugly. Looks like an app that was created 10+ years ago.

Surely there's a mail client out there that is fast, functionality, and actually enjoyable to use and pleasing on the eye (doesn't need to be all eye-candy, just not fugly!)

glad to see that open source solutions can be used in a everyday activity... sylpheed is one of them... i've been using Thunderbird and Seamonkey for a while a an email client... but both were to damn slow starting.
glad i found this nice piece of software today!!! going to test it for a while... look and works good so far... the only thing that i miss from Tb/Sm is the spell checker... with a spell checker included, this software would be even better!

This one gets 5/5. The lack of options to customize the main interface gets more than well compensated by the amazing featureset of this actually pretty light e-mail client.

The first thing that hit me was that it has supports OpenPGP/GPG straight out of the box so you can start sending encrypted and signed e-mails at once. Secondly, it's really fast; loads in no-time and keeps clean.

Only thing i could comment on is the menus that could look more uniform :) Menus with a tack has padding on the left to host the tack, other menus totally lack that padding etc.

But i sure as heck can not complain :) I suggest this for those of you who want a quick e-mail client set up, either alongside with ThunderBird or standalone. I have desktop running thunderbird and laptop is loaded with sylpheed. They share my IMAP inboxes perfectly.

Keep up the good work!

Awesome! Love the Graviton bomb and the Photo Torpedo attack systems. Used to play this in the arcades all the time and.. eh? What's that you say? This ISN'T the famous shoot-em-up but an email client instead?? (cue furious re-evaluation..)

*ching!* 5.3Mb? Make mine i.Scribe, thanks.

dunno why but chinese/japanese apps make me feel like its well written stuff :) I use Thunderbird and is now testing this one on a virtual computer. So far it looks like a great piece of software! Im not a hardcore mailer so maybe there is better clients than this one, but not for me :) Looking forward to the stable 2.3 version. Gave it a four because im not done testing it ;)

"Do people really think html mail is going to go away?"

No, yet every client shall have the option to automatically convert every incoming to plain text. Since I don't ever prefer html mail, I don't really care how it is supported or not.

It's all about choice and ease of use.

Using html in mails can be a good thing. Unfortunately most people who embed html intheir mail don't seem to get that emphasizing _some_ information can be a good thing but colorizing and scaling everything, embedding needless images and stupid smileys is anything but useful.

I thought this program was decent, although it lacks some features I need so I may not use it all the time.

"Html mail is not a good thing..."

sigh. Do people really think html mail is going to go away? It can be a good thing if it is implemented correctly. I get sick of hearing about how people should just use text: it ain't gonna happen.

I used to work with Thunderbird (great product altought some reviews from people that probably never used it).
I now changed to Sylpheed mainly because it's lightweigth than Thunderbird, an my old P3 complains about it.
Sylpheed is a small treasure: it's free, fast, lightweight, secure has a nice interface an lots of features, what do you want more ?

Why is this a windows program? X11 Windowing is a Mac OSX thing, and I assume X Windowing is Unix/Linux.

Very good idea. However it doesn't support html e-mail. I tried this program on windows xp and suse 9.3 and its basically the same other than the GUI. Anyway it is a getting somewhere. Include html support and im a user.
