it's a bit of a half assed program. not everything works on it. if youre just using it for texts, then it's fine, but if you want to make calls, don't count on it. these guys have been around for a long time. i dont understand why they cant get the calling function to work

Pidgin does everything that Trillian does, and it's free with no adware.
This used to be a good piece of software, but they got too ambitious with it.

Never thought I would be back using this, not that it was a bad software. Just that most old IM's are kaput. I'm using it for facebook im. Facebook gets allot of things right, but the im is pretty lame. I had never used Trillian for FB instant messaging. Wasn't sure if was included. It is included and works well. Other programs like Pidgeon and Miranda don't directly let you access FB im. Though with a ton of bells and whistles u can get it to work. Here with Trillian it was easy and works good.

Unless you reside in China MSN/Live is switched off in one month for good, you wont be able to use one of it's main features - Skype is becoming pretty universal & the Skype client does a better job than this does - This program is going nowhere ~

Not sure what all the complaints are for. It does what is says. You can add those old IM services all to this 1 software. Sure, most of my friends stick with facebook im, but for the few who dont, this saves me from having to install icq, yahoo msg or aim. As far as bloat, where? Not getting any secondary software installed, no pop up ads.

Many of the platforms Trillian supports are a dying breed. I miss ICQ back in the day, but only two of hundreds of friends use it yet. Yahoo, MSN, AIM... sure, I'm aware people still use them, but at what fraction of the pre-Facebook era?

This latest version of Trillian is bloat for a dying medium. iPad version finally released not long ago and I have to use for it, the iPhone/iPod version, or even the PC version any longer.

Time for a new business model for the changing times. Good luck Cerulean Studios.

-Lord-

-Lord- reviewed v5.2.0.8 Beta on May 3, 2012

Aside from becoming adware, it's horribly bloated now. It's used to be the mother of all IM apps because of the ease of bringing multiple Im's together into one place, but there are several other out now that are TRULY free. multi IM capable, and even portable (USB key anyone) Check out Miranda or Pidgin.

Trillian was a great concept, but sadly, now over reaching.
2 for posterity, and -3 for bloat, ads, and plain old "over it"

Most of my contacts are on MSN Messenger, but a few are on Yahoo or ICQ. I give Trillian 5 stars for the convenience of replacing these individual IM apps with a single (smaller footprint) app, but deduct a star since it is not perfect. There are odd problems that crop up from time to time. Not sure if these are regressions due to the frequent releases or new issues due to the fact that these IM services are a moving target. Whatever the cause, the few severe issues that I have experienced over the years have been fixed quickly.

Well I'm giving it 2 starts - down from 5 stars. All as nice until those stupid ad's start appearing in the chat windows. So much for my happy years with Tillian - I'm on the hunt for something else. Reason I gave it 2 stars instead of just 1 is that I like the meta-contact feature.

jorgosch

jorgosch reviewed v5.0.0.32 on May 12, 2011

Have to drop 2 stars and give it 3 now because I understand that from this version on it's adware.

NightFright

NightFright reviewed v5.0.0.32 on May 10, 2011

Less bloated than previous version and also more efficient with system resources. GUI seems cleaned up and efficient, more developed towards usage with social networks.

Compared to previous beta versions, the Pro membership model has changed: Almost all Pro features are now in the free version. However, the free version has ads (!) and no chat logs. Pro users are ad-free and can use logs, but Pro membership needs to be renewed after one year. Anyone who bought Trillian 5 Pro during the beta stage will be able to use the Pro features indefinitely as long as he/she sticks to 5.x releases.

I am sure not everyone will like that, especially not the ads. However, many people complained the free version was lacking too many features which were exclusive to Pro users, so I guess you couldn't have it any other way. I upgraded to Pro before that, so I don't have that issue. Anyway, only 4 stars because of the increased adware aspect - and also keep in mind that it tries to install some unneeded crap during the setup process (be sure to uncheck it).

Not suitable for people with a looooong contact list. The blinking, extra-large skin is just bloatware. Finding out about third-party skins which are (mostly) incompatible with new versions is not too easy.

On the other hand, Astra seems to have a decent feature set. If it only was free for Android!

A reason to use this over Pidgin? It supports even more networks, and it has server-side account settings, so if you have multiple computers, you don`t need to reconfigure/maintain your accounts on each computer separately.

This is the best piece of software for all messaging needs. It uses 4,987K of memory minimized in tray!!!! Google Talk with this retrieves all your Gmail and it display the full message in a nice slide out menu. This worked so well with Gmail that I now have ALL my email accounts being retrieved by Gmail. I can't say enough about this! I tried alot of email programs trying to find one that had eye candy and cool notification windows, yet be light on resources. This uses a fraction of what Thunderbird uses. If you like me most of email accounts are web based-Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and I have no need for a dedicated email client. This does both email & I.M. in a nice interface. Worth paying for the PRO version.

I really like this update. It works really well for me.
Here is a list of some of the changes:

* Windows Live. Trillian now supports signing in to WLM from multiple locations! File transfer speed has been improved (more to come), and mobile messaging is now supported.
* Notifications. You can now use notifications to directly retweet, reply to a tweet, and interface with mail right away.
* MetaContact Windows. When talking to a MetaContact, if you receive a message from another of their usernames the window will automatically switch for you.
* Instant Lookup for Hyperlinks. Move your mouse cursor on top of links to preview. Youtube links will show a preview image, too. Great for detecting NSFW links before you open them in browser, and will even resolve shortened links for you!
* Instant Lookup for Popular Terms. We now have more up-to-date Wikipedia data, and more relevant links for each popular term detected.
* Activity History. A polished look and powerful new asset view feature that lets you browse through images sent and received help improve history.
* Quicker MetaContact Creation. You can now drag and drop one contact on top of another to instantly combine them into a MetaContact.
* Other Updates. Support for Twitter’s new retweet mechanism, Twitter Lists, a customizable timeout for notification windows, and the return of custom avatar support.
* Skin Packs. Emoticon and Sound Packs have been moved to a more prominent location in preferences and are easier to change on-the-fly. You can also change contact list icons now with the new Icon Packs.

I was interested in trying this since people were saying it's better than Digsby, but even after changing the skin to the classic style, it just doesn't seem as usable. When you have Facebook, MySpace, Messenger and a few email accounts set up, Digsby, for all the issues people have with it, is just a lot more manageable and nicer to maneuver. Plus, I couldn't connect to the MySpace chat because I don't have a MySpace URL set up, which isn't a problem with Digsby (I could connect to Facebook Chat just fine). Checking mail is far superior in Digsby. I think it comes down to preference, and I use the 'lite' Digsby installer ( http://update.digsby.com/install/digsby_setup.exe ) so I haven't experienced all the bloat people complain about.

Quite simply my messenger of choice since 2001. Quite simply, it is beautiful. The options for skinning and plugins alone make Digsby look like ICQ version 1. The folks who develop the software are reachable and work hard at making sure that the software works well. Plus, as a member, you get the wbe version which is invaluable to me.

This is a software worth downloading, and if you like the free version it is more than worth the money to with everything it has to offer.

if you have a monster amount of RAM, then maybe give this a go. Otherwise if you're not running with oodles of free RAM I'd give this a miss, it's very very memory heavy.

After startup, connecting to 5 services it's showing up as using 70Mb+ - that's an awful lot of memory to just sit there waiting for an instant message to arrive.

I thought pidgin was a bit resource heavy at 22Mb, but it's an absolutely lightweight by comparison.

I'm afraid once I saw that usage I uninstalled quickly, I generally have lots of apps running and not a lot of free ram on my 2gb system is spare. I can't afford to waste it on memory heavy instant messenger.

Shame, as it looks nice and I used to live old Trillian.

I haven't used this program in a long time, load times where horrible and it seemed to suck resources over time.
Decided to give it a spin again. This time during installing there was an option to install the ask.com toolbar, only fools install that crap and even bigger fools offer it. So I unchecked it and guess what it still installed the ask.com toolbar. Just to make sure it wasn't a mistake on my end I installed it on a clean system while running a screen recorder, again ask.com was installed despite the fact that I unchecked the box. Triple checked this by watching the recorded video of my screen, yep I unchecked it.

So trillian is going into my crap list again. Maybe in a few years I'll try again but pigdin for me.

For 25 bucks this babe does: Windows Live, Yahoo!, MySpaceIM, AIM, Google, ICQ, Jabber, Skype, IRC, while allowing you to check Email, and use Facebook, and Twitter!
Can the freeware Miranda do the same?YES.
Are there a million other freeware apps that can manager some/all of the protocols mentioned above? YES.

But I still paid them $25 for Trill, because it looks slick, it's very straightforward, flexible and of course it supports pretty much everything there is to support. If you like pain in the a** and digging in software, go for Miranda - spend a few days customizing it and you'll be happy. Me, I like simple things that look great and work out-of-teh-box.

Getting there. Got it free from a TrialPay (InkClub).
Still got some issues and it's seriously lacking good skins and icon sets.

I've been a Miranda fanboy for a long time and I still like it. But Miranda's for the people who like to tweak and poke around with plugins and skins and have tweaks and customizations for everything. And hope it doesn't crash... Miranda's got huge potential and it's up to you to make it great.
Astra is good from the start and stays good but you don't have the same level of detail in your customizations. And Astra's more bloat than the vanilla Miranda installation. But not by much. Install a few skins in Miranda, some plugins and you're looking at a 78MB installation.

The Facebook plugin needs work, and some minor issues with plugins and protocols, other than that it feels finished.

I like it.

You had a point with that Duke Nukem remark there. This app is dead before it's out of beta because of the many great website-services that does what Trillian does and more with more intuitive interfaces and that are entirely free forever. No video or audio application beats Skype in terms of quality for that matter so why anyone would pay for this is just another laugh.

I don't know what you mean by "the Duke Nukem Forever of Instant Messengers" ... After all, it's *only* been three and a half years from the day the next version of Trillian was announced (in this blog post: http://blog.ceruleanstudios.com/?p=38 , on December 5th 2005) till a public beta. With a little effort maybe they can get the final version out before 2012 :P

Also, this is not *really* freeware, is it? Several advanced features are only available in the "pro" version of Trillian Astra, which you have to pay for, of course. Here's the list: http://www.trillian.im/learn/tour-features.html
So it's shareware, at best. Our friends at Softpedia actually think it's adware, and they are probably right, as usual. Link: http://www.softpedia.com...ging/Trillian-Pro.shtml

The Skype fiasco is not really Trillian's fault, however. It's just that Skype developers insist on people using only their client to access the Skype network, and their client alone. Ridiculous, but that's the way it is.

All in all, it's probably worth giving a try, but I'll give it just two stars.

Trillian is still the awkward messenger that never made me feel comfortable using it. It can be as powerful as u want (and its a messenger after all) but... it can't get to like it.

It couldn't get rid of the "unintuitiveness factor". There are too many points of control to achieve whatever task you want. And the colors are like onion juice in your eyes.

I don't have Skype anymore, but I seem to recall the plugin for the last version required Skype to be running for Trillian integration... Can any Skype users confirm if the plugin allows for stand-alone connection through Trillian?

If there is one thing we have learned, it's not to push/rush a product to be released because that almost always ends up with more bugs or a crappy product. Microsoft has fallen behind, Symantec etc. Although we all have our opinions on those companies too ;)

I've been with Trillian since the 2.x days and I'm currently a beta tester for Astra. My biggest issue with Trillian 3.x was the load time. My god it took forever. Astra is almost instant. You also can goto Astra's website: http://www.trillian.im and IM from that if your work doesn't allow IM programs. There are a lot of fixes, enhancements, improvements for the upcoming Astra. We are currently at Beta Build 94 and have opened up beta testing to more.

If you like a FULL featured program, astra will be the one, otherwise Pidgin is next in line.

I was a big fan of Trillian, until I finally found Gaim/Pidgin to be usable at long last. Nowadays Trillian is just not worth the cost, especially since its development has stopped a long time ago (don't even mention Astra).

Miranda place is unstable.
Pidgin is good, but it is disconnected very much.
The Messengers of Yahoo, MSN, AOL, are good but they occupy very much place and have big holes of security.
Trillian will not be the better thing of the better thing, but it is stable.
ASTRA's version will go out when it is finished, not since it happens with Miranda place that it extracts Alfas and Betas to right-hand side and left hand and has to be covering faults constant and his attachés become incompatible with the new versions and it is necessary to hope that they extract new versions. Please, give an opportunity to trillian, it costs a sorrow.

I also used to be an avid fan of trillian.. but I also agree it's a bit dated now.. In its day it was far and away the best IM client bar none.

But V3 has been around for years and years now. The new version has been vapourware for just as long.

I used it religiously until a few years ago and then found other clients came along and did the same as trillian and were free and often more versatile.

Shame. because had they kept up the development Trillian would be amazing now.

But as of now, well it's ok.. but hardly good enough to spend money on when there are dozens of freeware alternatives: Pidgin, Miranda, Digsby etc etc etc

ZenWarrior

ZenWarrior reviewed v3.1.10.0 on May 21, 2008

Trillian, in its present free version, has become very dated. Other free offerings now available cover additional standardly encountered protocols which it seems the developers of Trillian simply cannot see or refuse to support. For more years than I can recall, I was one of Trillian's biggest fans, but it simply has not kept up with what many of its users needs and its competitors.

That's possibly not surprising. My singular experience with the developer was far less than pleasant. Only the slightest constructive criticism of Trillian, and a suggested feature [still lacking], elicited a most unprofessional response and absolutely no indication of someone willing to listen to users. But still, I used it until competing products were just too superior to continue ignoring.

I completely agree with cricri_pingouin. I tried Miranda at work because I wanted something lighter. I liked it so much better that after 6 years, Trillian got the boot. Over those years I saw Trillian get progressively more bloated to the point where it was actually taking 45 seconds to a minute for it to load when, and that doesn't jive with my system specs. I was running maybe 3 non-protocol plugins and had a list full of metacontacts, which I figure is average. It's true that Trillian is prettier out-of-the-box, but I don't think that's worth it anymore.

In response to "Miranda is still requiring 30-40 minutes of configuration out of the box", I must have entered a wormhole while installing it, because it took me nowhere as long as that.
But this is a review for Trillian. I used to be a Trillian fan for many years, and I too find that it does contain a lot of stuff that I simply don't need. I prefer the older, lighter versions, and as a result, I rate this one a 3.

This is probably the best of its kind out there. I have had the previous version of trillian for a while and was great. had a few prblems but wasn't anything major. I think that being able to go into chat roon through the program is an excellent idea, although it tends to crash at times. I have a few problems with the new version. It takes a while for it to start up. Unlike before it started up well. Also, When i keep trillian on for a while it tends to have a higher CPU reading. And finaly it crashes on me form time to time. for no reason. i am not sure why it does this but its heppend about 4 times since i have had upgraded. it is still excellent by all means and have fixed the problems from the past.

I've nver quite understood the "bloat" comments either. If you add more features, it's going to get bigger. If you don't want new features, go back to version 1 and be done with it.
This isn't like Real/Quicktime or something that takes over your system and adds things you don't want. It allows a lot of custimzation as far as what's installed and what you want.
People who are whining are probably still running Win98SE or something.

Overall, it's an alright messenger, but it's not as customisable, light, stable or as good as Miranda. Miranda does everything that Trillian plus more (except perhaps skinng).

Also, I don't think the price tag is justified at all. Having to pay for the Pro version before you get access to basic functionality like the Jabber protocol is just stupid.

- Multiple Crashes after running only a few hours
- Buddys complaining about font sizes and colors
- Buddies not receiving IMs (Seems especially problematic after direct connects and with Mac Ichat/AIM)
- Inability to edit my AIM profile (To be fair I had this with an older build of 3.1 - not sure if its been fixed yet)

I went back to 3.0 and plan to stay there until 3.1 is stable.

And people complaining about the stability of a beta should review what the meaning of beta is.

Trillian 3 keeps getting better and better... this beta version is unstable, but I'm sure that will be fixed before 3.1 becomes final. UPnP support is a welcome feature. This release loads noticeably faster; however, could load even faster if optimized even further I'm sure.

Trillian 0.74 was the best IM application on the scene, but this time Trillian3 can't make it. It loads slower, it crashes most of the time, it even refuses to close itself sometimes.

I prefer Miranda for its small size and effective memory usage. Of course Trillian is still the most active community and updates are lightning fast. But Trillian3 gets 2 from me for its clumsy and unstable structure.

Zapatta

Zapatta reviewed v3.1 Beta Build 114 on Feb 7, 2005

This is a sad tale I met Trillian 0.74D on-line - it was love at first byte, everyday I would take her out, she always loaded for me - and we never crashed without rebooting aftewards - and we always worked well together.
I have to confess when Trillina 3.0 beta first showed up I initially smitten by her sheer sexiness ... there was no comparison to my 'reliable old' Trilly 0.74D - and one day I downloaded the younger Basic 3.0 ...
Now I am stuck with this version - she crashes all the time - won't re-skin, she recognise any of those skimpy, slinky plugins 0.74D did ...
One day 3.0 crashed on me and 'Doctor Watson' advised me to consider reinstalling with 0.74 ..
I have searched every sleazy software site, every freeware webpage and I went on a massive network trawl ... Germany, Netherlands, Spain, even Russia - with luck. I have even been tempted to download Trillian Pro, but I'd still miss 0.74D.
3.0 and I well we crashed yet again, I reluctantly indulged in a bit of manual disonnection. I would reinstall 3.0 yet again - if I thought it would do any good, but I know will never love Basic 3.0 the way I did 0.74.
If you have Trillian 0.74D cherish her, keep away from free 'uncomplicated' downloads and youinger improved 'upgrades' - once you've 'interfaced' with another version you can never turn back the CPU clock and make 0.74 once more your default setting.
If never realised they were planning to axe Version 0.74 if I had I would have never have entertained Basic 3.0

Even better than 3.0!

The 3.1 Beta has been treating me without any problems since I've installed it. It seems no less stable than 3.0, and I'm eager to see the new features and additions that are doubtlessly about to be implemented while 3.1 nears final status :). It's lookin DAMN good.
Trillian has become so powerful and good that it has become the best IM app in the world IMHO. It's so good that it even beats the protocol's individual original apps.. like MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, AIM.. Trillian beats them all with functionality, looks, the fact that it doesn't have s***ty ads, plugin support, and much more!
IM2 doesn't compare just yet. IM2's font management still sucks, I've tried out v1.5, they've made no improvements in that department.. it sure is an ambitious effort, with the implementation of audio & video.. but it seems too "hobbyish" and unprofessional in general as that it could reach Trillian with its very polished and solid feel. Of course I could make more comparisons and point out cross-criticisms.. but suffice it to say that Trillian Pro kicks IM2's a** in just about every way imaginable.
Miranda, while a great idea and project.. isn't even close to a final release. They're just about at 0.4, as far as I know, and that's just not very compelling. Trillian is at 3.1, has been a stable product for years already, and keeps going strong, with v3 being the best version yet.
It's also got some of the best skins for any IM app. Check this site for the best available v3 skins: http://browse.deviantart.com/skins/im/trillian/v3/

It's currently dead, but I hope it's gonna be back up by the time you click on it.

Cheers!

On a standard Dell Optiplex GX1 machine, Windows XP SP1 with Trillian 3 Pro, build 964 working just fine....I thought I'd give the 3.1 beta a go since people below were saying it seemed to load faster! Well, so far, no dice for me...it won't load at all. It's sitting in my Task Manager as a process....but it never fully loads. Just "hangs"...I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, doing a fresh install using the beta...still get the same results. The beta is almost 1MB smaller than it's previous install...so what's been removed? Maybe something essential for some of us? I don't know. I've given it a 3(.5) because most of the time Trillian works as it should, but it has gotten a bit too bloated for it's own good in recent times. I'm starting to eye the IM2 client...and as soon as the IM2 client supports video, I won't be paying to keep my Trillian Pro any longer.

Considering how many IM networks and how everyone has their favorite, it's nice to have 'em all at once. Yes, Miranda is "lighter," but I think Trillian is more polished. I'd personally rather have a polished "professional" feel that Trillian gives me, while Miranda feels like a project from someone's spare time. It's kind of like WinRAR vs. PowerArchiver. I prefer a slick interface as long as it's not bloated.

Not being able to set a global style set for all message windows! That's a HUGE oversight.

I want to be able to set all my message windows with the same formatting. Like turning off the tool bar, kill the conversation viewer, etc. I like a nice simple old school ICQ style message window. I use it with Yahoo, MSN and ICQ and there's not a glitch in sight. About every other time I fire it up, it notices me there's an update, downloads that, reinstalls, and runs.

With that in mind, those little ads in MSN Messenger ain't a big problem ;-) I've used Trillian 0.74 for a while, then I bought the Pro version, since the freeware version isn't updated in a long, long time. The Pro-version is nice, but not more than that. I've used Miranda for a while, but I'm back at MSN Messenger with Messenger Plus, a great (and working!) combination. Some people seem to not understand what 'Rating' a program is all about...

"I got an invite to download Trillian 3.0 but after I downloaded it said I was missing a file. Can anyone tell me where I can download a copy that works."

And this person gave it a low score! WHY? Cause you got a bad copy...

Then this guy, rates it bad because he wants the OLD version to be bug fixed... HUH? Why does that matter? Maybe all of those fixes have made this version better!

I dont use IM but in the days that I did Trilian was always the king. It still is today as all other 'competition' is just CRAP. Im giving Trillian a 4 Star for this ALPHA due to the quality of the software in comparison to the rest of the market.

Extremely clean and pretty interface, very nice set of features and just well-organized.

I keep looking at GAIM and MIRANDA and so far I've absolutely loved Miranda IM. However, this latest Trillian release made me switch :). It's great! It feels a bit sluggish though.. :(

For "just a chat app" it should feel lighter. What *I* want to see is a keyboard shortcut like in Miranda or ICQ where I can bring up the message windows when a new message arrives, or with which I can make the main Trillian window show and hide :)

When is the update to this Alpha comin?

'jrepin', No Jabber support... You better check again. Did you even install it? It is a plugin that must be activated just like the AIM/ICQ, MSN, Yahoo!, and IRC plugins must be activated to use those protocols.

I like this plugin support because it doesn't require those protocols that are not being used to be loaded, saving on the amount of memory soaked up by the app.

I don't know what you're talking about chook, trillian has never used more than 15MB of RAM, pro version with all my plugins is only at 11MB right now, and compared to AIM and Yahoo's 33-35MB, I'll take this anyday.

I am completely and utterly amazed at this release, I have yet to run into a single crash, all the old 2.x plugins work with it, it's so beautiful, and such low memory usage! The new history manager is absolutely amazing, I have pro, so I don't know what the regular version includes, but it's well worth $25 for pro (regular version is free).

3.0 has so far fixed a few issues I've had with 2.0, like buddy icons not working all the time. This version also allows you to go invisible (appear offline while remaining online) in AIM, Yahoo, Jabber, and ICQ.

Anyway - I'm very much looking forward to the final release of Trillian. I've never really had any issues with either version of the program and I don't want to have to pointlessly update the program every year if there are no major issues. I'm sure everyone can come up with a tiny gripe that less than 1% of users have...but they've been good about releasing patches for major issues.

This Trillian looks great. Very integrated with WinXP...nice interface, too. I'm thinking with MS's "default IM client" option we might see a VERY integrated IM client at least (MSN's great...but I seem to only know Yahoo people...and I know AIM is still huge).

Dear Pixelsmack, this has been possible for a long time, at least in Trillian 2.x. Simply click a few contacts holding the control key, then right-click and choose "Mass Message", or create a Meta-Contact, which you can subsequently use to spam all your friends in one go. ;)

Anyway, Trillian 3.x looks nice, although it's starting to get a bit too dumbed down for my taste. And of course its memory usage has gone way up too. It's a pity they don't have a "light" version, without the skins and all the pretty pictures...

It is very nice. It is somewhat like trillian, but it includes a lot of features trillian doesn't, but it lacks support for file transforing and talk to talk. In the current build. It is always being developed through. I find it to be a very good program. It has support for aim, yahoo, msn, jabber, and some other ones. So you should take a look at GAIM. GAIM even has some nice plugins. Also a other program that is better then both GAIM and Trillian is Miranda. It has a lot of plugins and you could change the way it looks. Trillian is an interesting concept. Several messengers in one program is a good idea, but the execution is flawed. As a messenger it works fine in that you can chat with other people, but marketed as a multi messenger client, I can't give it a good rating, as it messes up immensely in that area.
I have used it sparsely for a while, and I decided to make an account on each respective clint to keep testing it because of the dangers of using it with my real accounts.

I have several msn, aim, icq and yahoo accounts. Trillian for no good reason merges the list on each of their networks. It doesnt seem merged on Trillian itself but when you use the respective programs, all of a sudden you have all users from all accounts on each network on 1 list. This was exceptionally bad for msn because every user on my list was asked to be added to all my various accounts, the same went for yahoo.

The program has lasted alot longer than I thought it would. Yahoo and AIM are trying their best to get 3rd party clients off their networks for security reasons. MSN recently announced a more open stance, but imho this is more of an attempt to attract aol and yahoo then 3rd party, and as soon as that happens or doesnt happen, I'm sure msn is going to close up too.

There may be safer solutions out there than trillian.
If you intend to use it with a single account on each network ie: msn, yahoo, aim and icq - it works to message, but it lacks unique features and capabilities of the original clients.

I gave it 2 because it's a good idea and it works if...

To Adidas1532: You do not need to be continually upgrading if you use a multi-IM protocol client. I have been using them for over two-to-three years now going from the early days of Trillian, to Gaim, to brief visits with Miranda, and possibly others that I can not recall. I have never been forced into updating when I did not want to and have always been able to connect to my accounts when I needed to. At most the required continual updating that you speak of happens once or twice a year (as far as I am aware) as it takes resources and manpower to change a network and companies would rather not spend that time and money unless a good reason existed to do so.

Because betanews screwed up, they should have put a page to review Pro, not 0.7x, since we know what that has and .74 has only a bugfix. So i will review pro too.

Skin is really ugly compared to ther 0.7x one, but it is also much lighter. My amd 333 really is thankful for this.

Some nice features are added. Plugins, but some are really bad, like the weather one. It uses zipcodes (u.s only) instead of using worldwide ICAO location indicators.

Some nice windows added. For example when you get mail, when a user logs in, etc.

They removed the list flowing in the status window of msn. That info was pretty much useless and was badly coded (it made msn connect in 2-3 minutes in slow pc's)

Unfortunately, they screwed up. Do you remember 0.7x that has a "feature" that allows you to know when a person closes your msn window? It showed "person has joined the conversation". They removed that from trillian pro, the best feature of the whole program to me.

I complained about it in the forums when it was beta and they erased my post because people are not supposed to talk about it.

The interface is good, but slow. Contact list, menu and IM window drawing is slower than it really needs to be. And why can't I resize the windows in realtime? Why is it some supid dotted line? The management of connections is realy nice. the contact list icons are a bit confusing, but hey. And why did there website get raped? its all a bunch of 404s and super crapy layout. any way, good program, but theres still a lot of room for improvement.

This program wants your chats to be secure. These are honest authors who sebject themselves to peer review and discourse. The UI is elegant, the memory footprint is smaller than ICQ ALONE! And it interconnects AIM, ICQ, Y! MSN and IRC. This program keeps getting better, they support both the free and paid version, and for those who donated a mere dollar before, they get 1.0 FREE. This is a far cry from programs like FlashFXP that call home and play games, this renews my faith in Win32 developers. They dont all have greedy beady devil eyes and want to put you in the poor house. I wish this thing was $10 bucks, but $25 isnt a bat to the back of the head, so its feasible, and 0.74 isnt a watered down version.

Yeah the security issue is given, but first you had to get certain files from the user so you must have access to his computer over another exploit. I think this is not really a big issue, but can be maybe made better by the developers by relating the files just to the machine, or encypting them more.
Well whatever. I have to say: Great Job Trillian developers, really fast support with "bugfixes" against AOL IM. I really love Trillian, because it annoys me opening up 3 messengers, but I can understand AOL too, they got their Ad's in their software, from which they gain money, and they host the users, and they get the network traffic. So Trillian is actually just like a parasite on a big worm, who has already a lot of food. I reallt can understand AOL, but when there are several messengers out there, and friends and collegues use different ones, you want to use every single one at the same time, and then if Trillian even looks better (nobody can tell me AOL IM looks any good) and adds new features, eg Secure IM, which is really cool, why not using Trillian.
IMHO it is not fair against AOL to just use their service, but I also belive that AOL should have a talk and open their doors for Trillian, because it is just better. Maybe one could somehow figure out how to give money to AOL, since it is their money we are wasting by not looking at their ads (even tho you have oppertunities to delete them out of the program ;)

I think this is a great program and we should back it for several reasons:

1. Cerulean is making this for Free. For all we know ICQ can become commercial anytime...
2. It's the only program that lets us have all the accounts of yahoo, aim, icq, messenger and what not under one (1) window.
3. It's Cute.
4. It's not made by Microsoft or AOL.
5. It pisses off AOL.

Reason's enough?

It is NOT their fault and they don't deserve a bad review for something they are fighting so hard againt. Trillian is still as great as it always was, even better in fact, they are just going thru a rough phase in which they will only win with the users support! I suggest that EVERYONE who uses this program go to the Trillian web site, click on the PayPal icon, and donate SOMETHING and show your support for the little guy and this EXCELLENT program! Even if you can only afford to donate a dollar or two, it all adds up and every little bit helps! I am NOT affiliated with Trillian or Cerulean Studios in any way. I been using this since 0.70 and its brilliant

I use every single one of the messaging programs on there and have too many contacts to mention. Its a god send having everything on one application and all the messages coming through it. 2 clicks and I set away on all apps instead of about 20 on all 4.

However the IRC I don't use because typical MIRC is much better especially when you're an irc op and need to use scripts and such to retain law and order :P

With 0.72 (and 0.71) the features have been slowly added and refined. I don't really care for video conferencing and stuff but the ICQ SMS feature would be a great addition for me.

This little beauty has never crashed or mucked up AND its skinnable (anything thats skinnable gets good marks in my book)!!

I love this program. I'm glad they finally released an update. Finally I can direct connect with AIM buddies and file transfer. I only have 2 minor complaints. The first is that on yahoo, I like to remain invisible since I leave that connection on 24/7 (connect via cable modem) so that the few people that know that I stay invisible can contact me whenever they want if I am home (saves on the ol' phone bill). For some reason on this new version, everytime I IM anyone through any medium, it makes me visible not only on Yahoo but on ICQ and MSN as well. I sent a bug report and I hope they fix this problem.

Second, I still cannot connect to the Yahoo service using Trillian while I am at work due to the firewall. I have no problem connecting using Yahoos client, but Trillian won't connect.

Oh well, anyway, even with those minor annoyances, I love this program and hope it just keeps getting better!

This program ROCKS. I use it just for AOL IM only. Why? Because there are NO ads. And it's skinable. I have had it up and running for over 2 weeks with no problems on a Windows 2000 Pro machine.

This is the best IM app I have seen! You can even be logged in with all of your screen names at the same time! Best of all, it appears to have most of the functionality that made me like AIM. When I loged on for the first time, it even downloaded my buddy list from the AIM network (although Trillian doesn't send updates back to the server, yet)! As long as AOL doesn't block use of this app (as they did with the MSN Messanger), you have just found a big fan! :)

the first version of Trillian i tried, i was impressed with. it was nice. a little unsure of itself, wobbly fawn legs, but nice, and it worked fairly well, bar a few bugs.
the next version i tried was a lot more sure of itself. Trillian had matured. less buggy, definately more mature.
the current version, this one, Trillian is a very very pretty and beautiful thing. i haven't picked up any overt bugs yet, but am only using it for IRC and ICQ. the one thing lacking is the ability to send files via ICQ.
however, Trillian makes up for this with her looks. Trillian, as i mentioned before, is simply stunning. a beautiful piece of ^H^H^Hsoftware. not overtly wanton in any way, but simply twirling knee high summer dress sort of pretty. i absolutely love this application.

This is the best multichat program I have ever used. In includes more features that are compatible with the other chat programs then I have ever seen. Odigo was good but did not have enough features to compare. This program allows you to integrate much much more then others :)

Fast, small yet has everything but file transfers (Summer 2001). You couldn't ask for better support and response from the developers and just an amazing program.

A bit tricky to get the hang of, but once I figured out how it all worked, it's awsome! Way to go!

this program worked flawlessly on everything for me. i really love the idea .. now if it were only open source =) great job integrating all these networks - including irc was a great idea even though it's not really a messenger. you should at least give this a shot .. it's worth it (imho)

I just downloaded trillian, and man, it rules.
I don't know what kinda problems the guy below me was having, but everything integrated _perfectly_ and worked great! I've found a replacement for all my chat clients. From what it looks like, this program is just going to get better and better!

Not bad...not bad at all. It's actually very functional for a beta. I fired it up about 2 hours ago, and have been using it heavily (sorta as a test run) and it's been flawless so far. By far the best multi-IM/Chat app I've seen. I like it better than Odigo and Jabber. We'll see how things progress, but this one could become the next big thing!

Not bad, and a whole lot of potential. I have longed for a single messaging client that offers support for the three messengers that I use (Yahoo, AIM, ICQ). Previously, attempts have been terrible. The client is ugly, cumbersome, lacking in features that the other messengers need (away status, etc), drops connection regularly, and/or is generally unstable. This is the first to remedy most of those issues... NOT ALL, though. It still doesn't support updating the server-side buddy lists in AIM and Yahoo, file transfers, and multiple away states and status lines (e.g., Yahoo). The interface is very attractive, though still a bit cumbersome to use. It has several windows, which I would rather see consolidated into a more usable single window. It was unintuitive to pull in ICQ's address book, even though it automatically grabbed Yahoo and AIM. It didn't pull in ALL of my ICQ buddies, only about 1/3 of them. The heirarchy of buddies is a little chaotic, and I didn't take the time to figure out how to rearrange them beyond turning on an "offline folder" mode that helped but didn't solve it. It seemed to connect to all of my services right away, which is a first. Other multi-messenger clients always seem to stumble along for a while before managing to connect to all of them, if it ever does. This has potential to be a 5 and then some, but right now it is worth a 4. I'm keeping a close eye on it, and I hope to be using it as my only messaging client soon. Until they address more of these issues, I'm still not using it, but am leaving it in my "watch closely" file.

Great program. Takes a long time for search results to show up but I think it's worth if you're on a 56K modem or slower connection since the downloading speeds seem to be much faster. You need to keep the icon blinking in the systray even while downloading your song(s) with Getright. Beta 4 finally allows you to search by Title/Artist. Let's hope they can fix the current problems. Keep up the good work!

Trillian is an incredible program. Especially since its free (donateware) The features are absolutely incredible, and whats more the development team is absolutely incredible. I have never met a more responsive set of software developers in my life. This blows competitors like odigo and Maxxchat away....

This is Schweeet. Works VERY well. Cursors look extremely cool....only wish they had more to choose from, but I think that will come with time.
Integrated perfectly with my Logitech MouseMan+Wheel mouse.
This may be another piece of sharewhare that I *actually* buy.
