Publisher's Description
Win32Pad is a feature filled text editor that is written with a programmer in mind. Its main purpose is to provide enough functionality that is missing from notepad without sacrificing file size and performance. It's very fast and powerful. Has a ton of features that you would expect (Filesize is NOT limited to 64k, Recent Files, Auto-indent, handles Windows and Unix files, customizable Tab Size and Font settings, and many more).

Win32Pad's possibly most important feature is that it is portable from USB flash. Documented but only on the forum are several ways to create a zero-length win32pad.ini file as preparation (a blank slate with the right name). If the user does that before running Win32Pad, Win32Pad finds this .ini and proceeds to write the user-settings into it. One way cited is to type «echo.>Win32Pad.ini», at the command-line, which creates an almost zero-length file (4-5 bytes), which works fine.
MetaPad has a few added features, but it does not save settings in a way which is portable on flash. One of MetaPad's «killer» features is to strip away paragraph-returns at the end of lines, or to put them there as desired (e.g. to have each line be at or under 80 characters). That feature is however also found in Ted NotePad. I use Win32Pad for everything else however because I like its smallness.

This is 1 of the premiere Notepad replacements. It's intended to be a lightning fast text viewer-editor with a few enhanced features. It is not intended to be a mini word processor. Anyone that rates Win32Pad lower than 4 has no idea about the program's purpose, and never will.

A superb replacement for M$'s Notepad.exe. Amazingly small size. Fast and stable. Lots of features for its size. I rate it 4.899999, rounded to 5.

Not so hot. As other reviewers have said, there are other, better freeware versions. I had been using this on an old Win98 'puter to annotate some file lists, etc before I junked the PC. I thought it was pretty good, esp small size, and you can exit with a simple ESCape key. It can be minimized to the tray, too. I used it because it was small and recognized HTML, so I could just click on a link in a textfile.
HOWEVER, that being said, it did some pretty weird extensions to saved files. What a nightmare! I don't know if it was because I was using an ancient Win98 PC, but it appears that at times it cuts off what SHOULD by default be a TXT extension and truncates it to wherever it finds a period. Like: Sample.Text.File.txt would be truncated in save to: Sample.Text.FIL
Hence, NO SO HOT. I, like others, have gone with MetaPad, EditPad Lite, KeyNote, etc., etc.

This is a small and fast text editor. It doesn't have syntax highlighting, but it is useful. Some of the features seem to be pick right out of Metapad (http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/. Also it does not support Windows XP's visual styles. But overall it's a good little notepad replacement.
The "programmers" can always use Notepad2 (http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html). It is one of the fastes text editors out that has a lot more features than notepad and even Win32Pad. It also has syntax highlighting for numerous languages and scripts.

i love this app. been using it instead of notepad for years. if you need to do some serious text editing, something else would be better. but for .nfo's and text files and viewing html source, it doesn't get much better or lightweight than this.

Very good remplace of Notepad!!!
Only one problem: when I print a file the font that use is too big! I have to configure each time an apropiate font to print!!!

Win32Pad is good, but Metapad ROCKS!!! Why use anything less than the best?
bobad reviewed v1.0.14 on Apr 12, 2001
That's actually a 4.5 rating. It's a great program. It has most of the features one needs for frequent text viewing and editing. Could use a few more config options and hot keys. I really like the compact size and speed of this program, and really like the install routine. A while back this program mysteriously ceased to function, so I tried Metapad...and never looked back. Metapad is the only text editor that's better than Win32pad in every way. (bobad@mindspring.com)

I don't use Win32Pad as a Notepad replacement. I just moved copied a link in the SendTo directory so that I can access it quickly if I want to open a large file. Works fine for me and the program is so much smaller than UltraEdit.

Win32 seems like an interesting program. I don't see that many programs attempting to replace the standard Windows notepad. After all, notepad is small and quick to load. People usually use notepad for making small notes, so I don't think most of us would use all the fancy features that Win32Pad has. However, if you want a good alternative to notepad, I recommend Note Tab Light (http://www.notetab.com) Its free, full of features, open up documents in tabs for easy switching and it remembers the files you've opened and not yet closed.
sphiggo reviewed v1.0.13 on Aug 19, 2000
This program is a nasty memory black hole. When win32pad is first started up (on my Windows 2000 sp1 system), it uses 1.6 MB of RAM; after that, each time a file is opened (with the same win32pad session), total memory allocated to the program grows by leaps and bounds. All in all, after some activity, Win32Pad ends up with an allocation of around 5.8 MB!!! I notice a similar issue with NoteTab, though the creeping (from the initial allocation) doesn't appear to be as bad. Maybe the problem is in the bloated micro$oft'$ DLLs the program uses????

This software is an outstanding notepad replacement and shoudn't be considered as anything else. Its small .exe size and features makes it a very useful utility. Just rename it to notepad.exe and copy it to your windows dir.
If you on the other hand are looking for a program for scripting etc. I've come up to the conclusion that UltraEdit is the best choice(www.ultraedit.com). It has all the features that a professional webauthor needs. I have many years experience testing different editors and ultraedit is the best. The only thing that it lacks is a VI interface everything else is there.

This is the best Notepad replacement out there. It's fast, small and reliable. The only thing lacking for me is a bookmark feature and a spell checker but I know they are too much to ask for a program of this size.

Win32 Pad is the best in its class, which is a light, fast, but feature-packed Notepad replacement. To Moondo: "Stuffs", "Windoze", "Notebad"? If you expect any credibility for your news articles, you should learn to spell. It would also be a good idea to act your age.

What's so good about this program? Try going to line 0 in the "Goto Line #" command... If you're going to do any real scripting like HTML, PHP, ASP, you'll need syntax highlighting. Try Texturizer instead!

Very impressive, I must say. It's just what I was looking for -- a good text editor with the small size of Notepad (most of the other text editors are gargantuan pseudo-IDEs -- I already have enough IDEs, thank you -- or Delphi creations that hog resources) and the features I really need. I renamed it to NOTEPAD.EXE and dumped it into my Windows folder because I like it so much -- instant access! A real gem. My complements to the author. The only 32K program that I know of that can serve as a means for hacking apart my multimegabyte program dumps :)

This program rocks. Very simple, VERY helpful. It edits big files, and Since I dont have that crap (office) bar, I installed the reg file (after a tweak of where I put it, which is in the win dir as "notepad.exe"). And it works wonders. All i want now is for the save button to stay enabled after I save it and dont make changes.

I think win32pad is great. I've been using it since several versions past, and haven't found a need for anything else. I renamed it to notepad.exe and dropped it in my windows dir... it's snaller than MS notepad and does more. I don't use office and it's shortcut bar so I have no prob with the reg entry. I used to have a similar entry that let me hold shift and double-click on any item to open it in notepad... can anyone supply that to me again? About the only things I don't like about win32pad is it only lets you search downward from the beginning, and when saving some files, it ends lines with a CRLF which when ftp'd to my NetBSD box causes problems... maybe that's just me though or the file itself, but I'd rather it strip them out when it saves. Overall though, I love it.

The program itself is really a good replacement for the windows notepad although I'd recommend just to use it as an additional program to notepad. The reg-entry sux. Firstly, as described on the homepage, the MS Office Shortcut Bar doesn't work anymore and all the right-click pop up menus get mixed up. Better not use this, and move Win32Pad to the 'Send To' Menu.
