v5 is getting more and more bloated.

I have begun boycotting all of the newer versions in protest of

1) continual bloating of winamp -- I mean, really, KISS (keep it simple stupid

2) AOL crap that being bundled with it

Tried 3.x..sucked! Tried 5.x...not bad, but more than I want. I just want something easy and cool to listen to mp3's. But, I don't use 2.91, I use 2.81, last "good" 2.x version. After 2.81, if you are running WinAmp, and run any program that changes screen resolutions (games, etc), when you exit back to your desktop, WinAmp is in the middle of your screen, it won't stay docked where you left it. This is a bug from 2.82 to 5.02. So, pick your favorite plugins, and run 'em in 2.81.

Adds most "goodies" (library, and video - as plugins) to the Winamp core we all know and love. Video is useless to me, but I like the library feature. Glad to see they still care about the 2.x version.

Winamp 2.80
Excellent program, the loading time is even better then in previous versions it shows that there still is support for 2.xx winamp even though 3.0 is out which is still in beta3 and though it's digital and better sounding than 2.xx still is a bit buggy and takes awhile to load.
To sum it up winamp is the best mp3 player I've used, it's very low on resources too.

Justin seems to be pretty much the only programmer left out there who constantly tries to REDUCE the [file] size of his applications. shame there arnt more people with that as a priority. yet again he has done a good job of it, taking the wma plugin from 32k down to 7k is a perfect example of how efficient without compromising functionality all his programs are.

accually it's probably not because of the name because they would have said that on the winamp.com site. Because they are very open about selling out to AOL and what AOL tells them what to do. But they usually refer to AOL by the devil or the powers that be or what ever. But this new version did fix some of the problems that I was having the ID3 in Win 2000.

Winamp rules. I love the skins, the quality is kewl. Course I usually don't see the skins as I start it in my tray and use the right-click menus to do most functions, or hot-keys. Another MP3 player you might want to try is none of these works good for you is EO3 (eee-oh-three, not e-zero 3) that they have here at file forum. It simply uses Visual Basic Runtime and whatever decoder codec you have installed. I use it with my Faunhaufer-IIs codec and it sound great. Course it can only play one song and doesn't repeat so Istill use WinAmp...

This program just goes from strength to strength. CPU usage on Winamp now barely even registers as 1% (flashes between 0% and 1%), and that's with the AudioStocker output DSP plugin! (Running on PII 450)

_jaz_

_jaz_ reviewed v2.62 on Apr 21, 2000

Well.. here's another (useless maybe) review of Winamp.
I've read that some people don't like how winamp plays Mp3's (quality) and I must admit that in some kind of mp3's (encoder dependent) winamp reproduces a ringing artifact, where no other player do. Ok.
Also, Sonique, now with AE4 is teoretically the better choice as for sound quality. Ok.
Also have read that sonique equalizer is much better than Winamp. That's truely FALSE. I haven't been able to equalize anything with sonique meanwhile my equalization on winamp (and using some DSP's) is better than the one on my HI-FI stereo.
Sonique now will have DSP plugins, but... the equalizer is still unusable. I've reported it since version 1.20..
Playlist is far better the one on winamp than the one on Sonique. Sonique team is workin on changing it. Let's wait. It's not true also that winamp's one is the best. The best one (in my opinion) is the one on Apollo (although someone may argue about the one on realjukebox or other similar ones)
Finally. the CPU consumtion is a point for winamp. Sonique, without vis, consumes 20~30% on my cpu. Winamp does the same, but using 5 DSP plugins, equalizer and the built in vis.
Finally. No one is the best. Only use the one that fits better on your requirements. That's all. (Note: how can anyone recommend coolplayer? k-jofol and apollo are better!)

c0dex

c0dex reviewed v2.62 on Apr 17, 2000

I'll agree that sonique is the best looking mp3 player out there; winamp doesn't even come close. As for sound quality, you all are hearing things if you think there is any "distortion" in either product. And who the hell wants support for .vqf files? I've never even heard of them. The only two features that really matter to me in an mp3 player (besides geiss :) are maintaining a low profile on my system, and a good playlist editor. Winamp uses very little system resources, at least compared to sonique. It also has a playlist editor that can't be beat by anything out there. When you have 1600 mp3 files, you want a robust, searchable, sortable, easily customizable playlist editor like winamp's. Sonique's is a piece of trash. Also, built in support for video files is a nice bonus to winamp. I like enqueing music videos along with mp3 files.

sx460

sx460 reviewed v2.62 on Apr 16, 2000

I agree, who cares what an MP3 player looks like? It's not about the vanity, it's about how well the program works!! The playlist editor rocks Sonique and is the fastest around (sorts, adds, everything faster than ANY OTHER MP3 PLAYER!!). Also, it allows you to convert from MP3 to WAV so you can burn onto CDs easily. Of all the MP3 players it plays MP3s the best, Sonique might have problems on some MP3s but try those MP3s with Winamp and they'll most likely work better (crackling, skipping...). Also, Winamp uses the least amount of my processor to decode an MP3. It uses about 4% of my processor to decode an MP3 while sonique takes about 7%. Winamp is definetly the best MP3 player around!!

gibletpie reviewed v2.62 on Apr 16, 2000

Still not flexible in their skins support. For those of you who keeping saying 'plays mp3 thats all i need' (all 2 of you). Why do you keep upgrading your computer ..do you say ..'plays tic tac toe its all i need?' Yeah right ..like I believe you are still using the commodore 64.

My basic point was that after so many revisions dont the programmers of winamp have a little time to tweak their skin system to allow for different shapes. Sure its nice that they fix up the odd memory leak (which we probably didn't notice) but lets innovate it a little.

Been using Winamp since, well since I can remember MP3s. It does everything that it says it does, and has GREAT people behind it. I personally think that the sound quality is excellent, especially when paired with a Sound Blaster Live! family card.

Personally I don't think that "sonique" is as "unique" as it thinks that it is. With all the hype of it's release, and what did it end up being? Another meager MP3 player in my opinion.

Sonique? ewwwwwglay! Seriously, what do I care if winamp is a box? It does what I need to to - It plays music. And with the DFX-DSP sounds better than anything else on the market, hands down. Besides, that little box sits very nicely and unobtrusively at the top of my screen.

rramsey

rramsey reviewed v2.61 on Mar 3, 2000

I'm sorry but compared to Sonique or CoolPlayer (the latter without the equalizer turned on), the sound leaves a lot to be desired. I refer to it as TinAmp for that reason. Everyone I've pointed at either of the two other programs I've mentioned (there have been ten people so far) immediately switches and doesn't go back. Sonique, bugs and all, has far better sound and a superb equalizer. CoolPlayer is for minimalists and produces sound comparable to Sonique as long as the equalizer isn't used (that feature is truly objectionable). Both are skinnable in ways WinAmp can only dream of and for my money CoolPlayer gets my vote because not only does it sound great, it's small and not cluttered with bloat the way both WinAmp and Sonique have become.

For people with ears and a decent sound system to use 'em with, WinAmp has seen its day.

snarfo

But I will give credit to its stability but am disappointed in winamp for not making it more flexible when skinning ...it would be nice to get out of its box shape.
