Still not working behind a proxy with authentication... Last working version was 8.5. I don't understand why they have the option to set up a proxy. It seems it works if you already have your contacts synced with the server, but it seems the contacts use a diferent server, and that connection doesn't support authenticated proxies.

Notes:
Experiencing a little quirkiness with the webcam chat when connecting to someone running the 2009 client (Lifecam VX-3000) . Webcam "effects" feature also hangs when attempting to open.
The msnmsgr.exe process continues to run after exiting.
Facebook and Myspace contacts not showing as online when they are, unless they are simultaneously logged into Live Messenger..
I really like the browser integration and the ability to combine various social accounts into a single place.
Once the bugs are knocked out, this will be a very worthy update to the Messenger client.

@ spikeoscar - you are correct. Had had the same issues.
As a tester I also tried it on 2 Windows 7 PC's - both *64.
I even uninstalled one by one on 1 pc all software and tried re-running the installer and it failed. I then did a fresh clean install of the OS and in then installed without a problem - very strange. Hopefully by the next build they will iron out issues with the installer. (also on the same pc - whilst the beta install would fail the current non beta installed ok) - 5 for the app but -2 for the install process.
Also aokromes is correct this version is not designed to work with XP.

A good little program, I have no real complaints about it. The popups someone mentioned (such as the 'today' thing) can all be disabled in the options. You can even set it to behave itself and sign on automatically (if that's what you want) at Windows startup and sit patiently in the corner until you want it. Unlike yahoo messenger - if you set that to sign on at startup, up it pops onto the screen as though the first thing you want to do on switching on is obviously use the damn thing. It's just bad manners in my view. I complained about it years ago, they said they had no plans to change it so I refuse to use it.

Does this thing know how to rename a contact?
It's very annoying that the obtrusive "buddy ABC is online" pops up all the time during a presentation. Missing tabbed interface.
Advertisement! especially when adult related which pops up during a presentation. That is so unprofessional.
I have heard a few times people in my company who got hit by virus or worm via their MSN Client.
Use Miranda IM and get rid of all of these. Miranda is low on resource, multi protocol and if you spend sometime to customize it, it looks very nice.

While the application itself is ok,it must surely load up with one of the most cluttered 'let's see how many buttons, ads, and icons we can cram into a small surface' interfaces of any app out there. Thank god there are third party utilities to clear the clutter.
I will agree with one other reviewer that the lack of a tabbed conversation window is ridiculous.

Look before you leap. It works fine for me, and is the most elegant version yet in terms of fit & finish, layout of controls, etc. The most irritating bug from the previous beta (conversation window wouldn't auto-scroll) is fixed. Video calls are easier to initiate. Still can't boldface or italicize in my conversations, though.
But for a number of users, including my main chat buddy, installing this version breaks their windows live installation altogether. 'Windows Live Communications Platform has encountered a Problem' etc. Logon is impossible. In other words, messenger becomes unusable. For some of them, the problem persists even after uninstalling & downgrading bacfkwards.
Keep checking message boards, Microsoft user forums, etc. There's no sign they've really figured out what's wrong or how to fix it, so upgrade at your own risk.

Its tied in with all the other stupid windows live crap. Advise to microsoft. 1st, stop calling everything windows this, windows that. Just call it what it used to be, MSN Messenger. Same for all the other bundled software. 2cd, keep the downloads seperate. If i want to try the newest version of messenger, I don't need to go through the Windows live riot act. Didn't find anything spectacular about this version. It worked, but I liked the 8.1 interface better. Which reminds me. I couldn't find it. Its no longer listed in Betanews. Only 7.5 version showed up. Had to go to microsofts site to search for it. Guess they really want people upgrading to this. If you have 8.1 already, Just stay put. Its more than o.k.
Buggle reviewed v2009 Beta (14.0.5027.908) on Sep 28, 2008
This looks very promising. The interface (design) changed quite a bit, looks more mature and just feels better. However, the user still has the impression that it is not yet finished: here and there you get the feeling that stuff can and should still be tweaked. It has an unfinished feel. But they are definitely on the right track.
There are some issues with this version.
1. Previous versions opened Internet Explorer for Hotmail, even if Firefox was put to default browser. This version no longer does that, and I think it is a downside.
2. The Hotmail inbox function of messenger does not function anymore: when you click inbox, you are directed to the msn main page. Maybe this has something to do with the previous point.
3. It does not keep the settings of WLM 8.5: all my smilies are gone and other settings like sounds as well.

I'm running it on Server 2003. Provolino you don't know anything so don't try and be smart. The reason it fails to install is because the Windows Live Installer which installs messenger and other applications is not in the compatibility list for it so you have to obtain the windows live messenger installer seperately from the windows live installer.

Not bad. Little more pleasing than 8.1. Is it the best? Can't say that. Until AIM and Windows live msgr allow you to be invisible to certain users like Yahoo does, I can't give this a 5. Tried the new mail also. Its not bad also. Allot better than the beta version i tried in Sept. that crashed so much i couldn't really test it. If you use this, aka windows msgr,- msn messager, this is a good upgrade.

Yes, the installer worked for me, I now have version 8.5.1288.816 .
The servers may indeed be a little slow at the moment.
My only slight worry was that doing an upgrade as I was, it first said it was uninstalling the old version first, it then moved on & there was a long delay as it presuambly waited for the servers. I do hope it had done the right thing (TM) and at least downloaded the files for the new one before removing the old :-)
omega5475 reviewed v8.5 Beta 2 on Sep 6, 2007
>Sven123456789 : Your version of Windows Update is probably outdated or Automatic Update service is disabled.
The installer connects to ads.adultfriendsfinder.com to download files. It's funny that a giant company such as Microsoft needs to have adwares. I'm guessing they are trying to promote their anti-malware products, lol.
The version info doesn't state that this is a beta so this is kinda puzzling.
Sven123456789 reviewed v8.5 Beta 2 on Sep 6, 2007

This is a web-based installer, and with everyone and their brother downloading it, their servers were probably a bit overwhelmed yesterday.

tbresson reviewed v8.5 Beta 2 on Sep 6, 2007
I like MSN Messenger and I can live with the adware but the new beta 2 is simply poorly done. This is not due to the product itself but to the new installer.
I can't install it on my machine. It's as simple as that.
It says "Checking for installed products" until I get an error saying that it was unable to download the program.
First I wonder, why can't it detect I'm using the previous beta version. So I uninstalled that. No difference.
Then I wondered, ok the error description says it might be due to: "...that the Windows Live installer website is [...] blocked by your firewall", so that would mean that the installer needs access through my firewall to download & install a program which works fine without wihtout firewall access (through http-requests).
This will leave every person behind a firewall they can't control in a situation where they can't use this version of MSN messenger due to the installer. Not very clever.
Of course it could be related to the fact that the servers that provide messenger simply is overloaded but the server from which you download the installer is not. In any way, a more suitable error would have been in place rather than:
"There was a problem downloading this product."
Sorry for anyone who thinks it's unethical to rate a program by the installer and not the program itself.
UPDATE: If you uninstalled, get the previous version here: http://www.filehippo.com...oad_msn_messenger/?2748
MikeDiack reviewed v8.5 Beta 2 on Sep 6, 2007
It looks good. Have tried it at home via the new WLInstaller.exe
_BUT_
The WLInstaller.exe seems to do weird stuff via firewalls etc. The long and short of it is that the installer won't download the files here at work, and as far as I can tell (from the notes they ask you to check if it fails) this is due to some firewall exceptions that need to be set up. For people like me, behind a corporate firewall/proxy, this is now useless as the installer won't download the files.
Why on earth couldn't they have stuck with the original method of giving regular download links for each individual program.
Daft!

Don't bee fooled by the 1.72 MB installer. It is a set-up installer which encourages you to install other live products.
You should un-select all the bits you would rather not have on your pc prior to the installer downloading messenger.
As for messenger it's self not sure why this is listed a Beta 2, it no longer has the words or reference to beta on it! The version number shows as: 8.5.1288.816
I mark this as 4 because it works the way it should, and is a good messenger client. I have not lowered my score due to my personal dislike of the new installer.

It's free, and it just WORKS.
I'm seeing a lot of ridiculously low scores for trivial reasons. How often do you even stare at the AD anyway? The program is normally minimized to the System Tray.
You can hide the side TABS to clean up the Interface which is pretty clean already.
A "1" because you can't sign out and exit with one button? Anyway, wouldn't exiting the program be basically the same thing? I don't even see the issue let alone wasting time and energy complaining about it.
Some complaints are almost like dissing your BMW because it doesn't have a USB port for your iPod.
yourmum reviewed v8.5 Beta on Jun 1, 2007
I'm not sure what you are complaining about...if it weren't for these ads, the MSN/WLM network would not be able to remain alive. It would have shut down long ago.
Also, having SP2 as a mandatory requirement isn't bad...it makes the computer much more stable, and more compatible.
I give it a five. Very stable, alot faster, and looks great!! :)

As for the ad space, let's leave that one alone, I could say something here, but i don't feel the need to get nasty. Also, I'll keep the ad there, it's small (only 1 in by 2 in) and it's not intrusive or anything.
I gave it a five to compensate for the negative views, and because I have always liked WLM.

WOW - 53,000K on my system for a program that should be a simple chat program. We know it can be slimmer because others are able to do it yet greedy MS keeps it fat to keep their bank accounts fat from advertising income. Clicking on a button to view a contact's information caused my computer to reset like a warm reboot -- who knows which files may have been damaged from that so I did a restore from a backup I had done a few days before. (yes I know it's a beta but consider this a warning)

As of yesterday, a new version of Messenger 8.0 is now ready for your downloading pleasure - version 8.0.0812. Think of this release just like that little dash of salt on your big delicious breakfast. Almost nothing has changed to the perceptible eye – but enough to make a difference. Specifically:
- Many people will notice serious improvements to the quality of audio and video
- Fewer messenger crashes, hangs, and connectivity issues.

The WLM installs messenger sharing usn journal reader service C:\$Extend\UsnJrnl:$J it shows up in services, thats what was the causing the defrag error, sorry if saying jrnl reader service was misleading. I bit the bullet and installed this newer version, so far so good but still why does that reader services metatadata leap up from 80mb to 133mb after a virus scan? it has to be writing to that service it not just reading from it as MS says, still its seems ok so far and I do like the new look and features, yes a little heavy on resources but as new apps come out they will be as they pack more in, a pc's lifecycle is short so more ram will always be the best upgrade for an older machine, so no moaning there on my part. So far so good :-) Ok I take this all back the metadata showing in perfect disk went crazy again and MS offers a reg hack to disable identity control to stop it! I can see my mother doing that, and another email says they are aware it cant count data properly ie 133mb could be 13mb! so back to 7.5 till they fix it, I dont need emails telling me I missed a messsage as I was offline when I was actually online and the messenger crashing after video calls and hacking my reg to make it all better, all this tells me its not working as it was intended and three releases within a couple of months and still problems occuring, think about that! As to that patronising messenger blog about that "delicious breakfas"t its a heart attack on a plate Leah, clogging my pc with bloat and salt is bad for you by the way! I wish they had not been pushed to get this out without the resources and programmers they needed, everything takes a back seat for Vista and office 2007 it seems. Shame really.

How can anyone like a messenger that installs a service (Jrnl reader) that produces massive file defragmentation! This service kills the xp degrag, you can,t defrag that volume with it, i use Perfect Disc 7 and it suggests i do an offline defrag every few hours!! that much defragmentation of metadata in that service somewhere, now before anyone jumps on the "its having a crap pc/user has no ability" bandwagon I have a Voodoo rage with an AMD Athlon x2 4800 with 2 gig of Ocz platinum ram and a 400 gig HDD, and this behaviour was on a fresh install of windows pro (non oem) all the latest drivers etc etc (rolls eyes) the program may look nice and have some new toys but when it comes to the actual mechanics of it, logging in, offline/online status problems and defrag issues then its flawed pure and simple, and yes i got it from the proper site. 7.5 works well for me it does what i need till they sort this mess out, i like to see my contacts and have a stable defragmented Hdd thanks!

Nothing crashed, it replaced my MSN Messenger flawlessly and it seems to have a lot of interesting new features. I'm not fussy about the interface but that will change. I switched to a different shade of blue and it was nicer on the eyes.
Microsoft is really feeling pressure from organizations such as Google who are dominating the web space. Microsoft makes money by becoming an integral part of people's lives. They're trying to make "Live Messenger/mail phones" they want to keep people using MSN home (advertising dollars). My Bell Sympatico Internet just updated my e-mail from 10MB to 2GB and gave me ten secondary accounts of 250MB each. Wow! Why? It turns out that Microsoft's footing the bill so that they can link us to their software. It ties into MSN but who cares? More e-mail space for all that spam! (actually I was running out severely)
Microsoft is also shutting out long-time internet security partners and trying to dominate that area too. But so what? As long as it works (cough cough) and they don't make it impossible for others to provide alternative solutions.
I've got no problems with Windows Live Messenger, but then I don't really need any of the new features either. As a Vista Beta tester with a fair amount of computer skills I have to say that I like the direction Microsoft is going.
This product is going to be user friendly and just plain useful. (and if you don't like it, search for a site that will remove the adds and modify it to your liking like www.mess.be

2) I've been wanting offline messages since the ICQ days. Finally it's been implemented.

Definitely getting better with each new version but also getting more bloated ram use wise (general speed doesn't seem to be affected).
But what people should take note is how long it has taken the Microsoft team to add the current wonderful features in 8.0 everyone is raving about.
Yahoo Messenger! has had these very same features for YEARS and was able to perform them flawlessly with only half the memory consumption (25mb ram average) to boot.
It just shows you it *can* be done better and has been for years, Microsoft (like usual) have taken forever to catch up with the competition but dispite waiting for all these features for years, now they are finally here, i can finally enjoy them ;)
Version 8.0 is a fantastic update. Offline messages, new cooler look, new sounds, invisible mode, option to change chat window colour, folder sharing, all great!
Now all i need is to buy another stick of 512mb ram to up my system to 1 gig, (this 8.0 takes 50mb for one chat window!) but hey, i've been putting off a memory upgrade for over 2 years now! ;)
Still...while i appreciate the new msn i have to do this.
*Puts on his best Darth Vador impression*
Just one more version and MSN's transformation to the Yahoo side will be COMPLETE.

Lots of neat new features such as the sharing folder, it looks a lot nicer overall, i was worried when i tried the first Alpha versions, it looked aweful, this seems to load up faster then the previous MSN Messenger 7.5.
The offline messaging feature is fantastic aswell, if someone is online (using Windows Live Messenger) and you're appear offline, you're able to talk to them, if they go offline, and send messages to them, they will recieve the messages as soon as they get online!

First of all, I don't see how finding this bloated relates to not having a life ...
Anyway, I tried it. I used it for quite a while ... at first I would've given it a 1. It is bloated. It is ugly. Having said that, I learned to accept the interface (the design, not the scheme).
I'll promptly be going back to Miranda. First of all, there's no way of making the interface fit in with my XP Style - I abhor that. Second, the ads, the tabs, the MSN Search bar, I found no way of turning off the sounds (though there probably is a way other than messing with Windows sounds).
It barely gets a 3. Just. Now trim it by say, 13-14MB & it'll get a 4.

Unable To Login Without Original MSN Email Address "Only" And Like Google Microsoft Abuse People With Invitations Why?
husky87 reviewed v8.0.0566 Beta on Mar 25, 2006
you need to be invited to the beta test to use the software. thats no reason to vote it a 1 idiots.
I give it a 4, they still havn't fixed a few bugs that i've encountered.
srotman reviewed v8.0.0566 Beta on Mar 22, 2006
tho i still think this is bloated, it does the job and it does it right. a few nice upgrades from 7.5 and im sure more to come.
also, WHY are there people here asking for invites or people offering??? does no one bother to read anymore? YOU DONT NEED AN INVITE TO USE THIS! ITS NOW OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!
go here: http://ideas.live.com/si...-497c-8e60-c6313f7ebb73
and sign in. it will add your email to the accepted beta testers list so when you run Live Messenger and try to sign in for the first time it will log you in. If you don't sign in on that page then you will get an error saying youre not a beta tester and to sign up elsewhere (which is no longer the right sign up page anyway)
sorry to rant, but i want to save people some time and stress

From what I can see from the login screen, it looks a bit cleaner.
My passport doesn't allow me to login yet. If someone can invite, I'll give it a bit more in depth review, 3 (avg) for now.

The ability to assign meaningful nicknames (ie. rename people to what YOU want) means that this version is head and shoulders above the old ones.
Yes the interface isn't pretty YET but it's still beta. Functionally it's fine.
No issues with this at all so far.
If anyone wants an invite I have a few spare.
FrequentFlyer since they asked nicely & the others are first come, first served :)

I tested this with one of my Passports that hadn't gotten an invite and it logged in fine.
I'm rating this a 4 because Microsoft is doing a good job over-hauling Messenger and they're listening to the users [beta testers]. For those who don't like the GUI then I'd recommend you read the WLM8 blogs for explanations as to what you may find wrong looks-wise.
JoeDirt, you're comparing MSN 7.5 which is a polished 7.x build with WLM 8 which is a beta and the GUI is in flux and they _know_ it doesn't look great yet. They're stuck trying to make the beta testers who liked the _new_ and _old_ looks happy and right now it's a combination of both. Read the WLM 8 blogs.

NOTE: srotman, people are complaing because _some_ people can't login even though the beta has been opened to the public. Likely another MS error. As it stands I signed in with a non-invited Passport like 2 days ago. Today I received an invite from Microsoft for that Passport. A tad late, eh? And especially when you read the first sentence, "We'd like you to be among the first to try a new beta version of Messenger." What it really means, though, is that I now have access to the ideas.live.com site and I can download the betas with that Passport. They're too lazy to change the email.

Have tested the WLM for a bit now.
- Very stable so far
- Cleaned up the interface a little
- Nickname option (finally!)
- Hide tab option (finally!)
- Added 'Folder Sharing' Feature
- Added 'Windows Live Safety' Feature (mandatory for Folder Sharing)
- Individual color adjusting of WLM interface
- Calling feature (definite Skype competition)
WLM should not be confuse with MSN - this is the follow up to WINDOWS Messanger which was originally intended for companies. I am guessing WLM will even in final overlap very much with MSN Messanger. (http://www.livemessenger.net/)
Still need an invitation though please to hweiland@hotmail.com (currently only using a patch to run WLM) thx

I still can't sign-in, not sure why if it is suppose to be open. I've read that it isn't, people just thought it was because of the UK site.

And BetaNews should update the link for Windows Live Messenger, unless it will use the old MSN Messenger site once it is out of beta.

Joe Dirt reviewed v8.0.0566 Beta on Mar 21, 2006
Junk.
Worse than 7.5 by far.
The only thing that this is good for is offline messaging. That's the only reason I gave it a 2 and not a 1.
Come on Microsoft, you can do better.......I hope....

pjb reviewed v8.0.0566 Beta on Mar 21, 2006
This release has been out for about 2 weeks now. Still room for improvement. PS You still need a invite to use this. Not sure where Betanews believe you can obtain and use it without one.
