Hi every one! I have to say that for what the program has done so far, I am pleased with it. BUT, .........please someone...... help!! I don't understand it!

It successfully downloaded 90 updates (including some for IE-8, which I do not use) The WUD program has install under C:\Program Files (just how I liked it). But the updates downloaded to a separate folder directly under C:\. It seems to me as if the update list is sitting there but they have not being installed! Doing it manually one by one, means re-starting the computer with every update (90 times!!!!!!!). Can some one help me? What should I do?

I apologised for my ignorance, but one criticism of this program, and an important one, is it does not offer any guidance!

Can be a good tool, but it doesn't notify that there are any hotfix-files and the downloader overwrite these files.

Thank you very much for this gem of a tool, after MS killed the autopatcher project, getting updates and storing them locally became a pain. Since I do lots of formats and reinstall of OS, I need to go through the painful process of updating over a slow connection time and time again. This utility saves me all the hassles.

Jane, you ignorant slut!!!

If you don't know what a product is OR is for-- don't rate it UNTIL you AT LEAST learn something about it.
SIMPLE...otherwise, it helps NO ONE.

Say you just built a new system...or wish to have all updates in one place...maybe to slipstream...then this is for you...

as Windows Update will ONLY give them to you in their entirety after numerous restarts & reconnects(& system restore points)...and that is if no bug / glitch / freeze pops up along the way...

but if you'd prefer to sit in front of your screen for many hours, babysitting the process...feel free...

How is this different than the Windows Update Software that comes with the Operating Sytem and then is updated by MS whenever they believe it may be beneficial?

Edited: Thank you Horsecharles for your excellent explanation. MS, of course, should have given us this explanation of it's use, and if it had done so, I would not have asked the above question in the first place.

Because of your explanation, I have rerated this a 5 (the 3 was given in order to give it an average rating). Again, thanks.

This is a great idea, but when I integrated all of the updates (excluding Service Pack 1) for 64-bit Vista using vLite performance slowed to a crawl. My computer has 6GB of memory and a discrete Nvidia Ge Force 7600GS PCI-e graphics card. When I did a clean install with my RTM Vista DVD and installed SP 1 performance was considerably faster. I also did not experience any of the BSOD's related to using more than 3GB of RAM.

Edit:

themiddaysun reviewed v2.23 Beta Build 842 on Oct 31, 2006

I'm glad I read the review that told you how to get the .ashx files installed into the application. I have tried this application on several occasions as it has gotten great reviews, but I have never been able to get it to load the update lists, until now. Downloading the updates as I type this. Giving it a 4 for not detailing how to install the update list.

Excellent program. I was writing a something similar but then I stumbled upon this little gem. Oh well, why reinvent the wheel?

Full marks for originality, features and convenience.

For the person who was talking about AutopatcherXP: It's a different program for different purpose. Please don't mix up programs that deal with a similar topic but meant for different purposes.

Microsoft need to silently deliver and install the WGA and OGA. after that they need to silently start deactivating the pirated softwarew.
by doing this their sales will grow, otherwise it will stagnant.

Buggle

Buggle reviewed v2.23 Beta Build 724 on Oct 16, 2006

Only partly useful. It does not contain a complete list of updates (at least it doesn't for Windows 2000). Update Rollup Pack 1 for instance is not included in the update list. This is probably due to it being a WGA enabled update, but still, there should be some announcement that it exists but cannot be downloaded with this tool.
So, it's a great initiative, but it is not useful because of it's incompleteness.

JEdwardP

JEdwardP reviewed v2.23 Beta Build 719 on Oct 14, 2006

The unhandled Exception error is caused by attempting to use an update list file that is still compressed. As has already been explained by another reviewer, Install the application first, then download the .ulz file, then double-click on that file to load it into the application properly.

rip_pit

rip_pit reviewed v2.23 Beta Build 719 on Oct 14, 2006

MS .NET Framework 2.0 is needed to run this very nice app.

Captain Hook

Captain Hook reviewed v2.23 Beta Build 719 on Oct 13, 2006

Not working at all on Win2000 Pro. Tried it on 3 computers. All info I get is this:

"Unhandled exception has ocurred in your application.
If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

The system cannot find the file specified."

The computers are newly installed on IBM Laptops T21(one week ago) with the latest updates since 2 days ago. That's I why I wanted to try this program for todays updates.

EDIT: New version, 2.23 Beta Build 724, Still Not Working on any Thinkpad T21 with Windows 2000 Pro!!
And Yes, .NET Framework 2.0 is installed and updated.
And Yes, No update list is here. But the program is working one step more so now I can access update list but now it is crasching again trying click on it. It also says in the startup: No update list found. I give up now on this program! Bye bye....

What a piece of crap. This does nothing but open a deluge of windows and downloas nothing at all. Might as well stick with autopatcher 2000, XP and server 2003...

c4p0ne

c4p0ne reviewed v2.23 Beta Build 649 on Aug 28, 2006

It needs to let you know exactly WHICH updates from the downloaded bunch are installed on your particular OS, and if possible, display the relevance of the patches to your OS.

For instance, all patches for exchange can be downloaded at will, however they will be "greyed out" to indicate that although you have the patches for safe-keeping, you don't need to install them since you're not running exchange. Thats just a simple example of course, this feature could be more useful.

bouncyboingy reviewed v2.22 Beta Build 436 on Aug 22, 2006

This has great potential, as I have used it before with good luck. This version I cannot seem to Get Firefox to grab the Update file. I assume it is IE only and tried IE with no luck either. I did see they were working on the site ?,regardless I manually put the download.ashx file into the application folder and it works.

Great app to help update family/friends on 56k.
Keep up the good work Guys !!

VictorAnderson reviewed v2.22 Beta Build 436 on Aug 21, 2006

Used to rate it a 3, now I give it a 4 (really more like a 4.9).
Reason? Apparenlty the author listens to feedback: Now you can update the download file lists from his webiste. (There is even link in the app that takes you there.)

Now..how to go from 4 to 5? Make a BUTTON in the app that says "Check for updates" - then have another screen popup with the list of possible updates to download....select the ones you want and pooof! It updates it on its own....thus no need for the user to have to actually goto the website.

Still though... with it the way it is now really more like a 4.9.

Metshrine

Metshrine reviewed v2.21 Beta Build 284 on Aug 17, 2006

While a good idea in theory, not all updates are applicable to all pc's. This application makes no distinction between pc's that require an update and those that dont. I will stick to windows update as I think microsoft is more able to tell which updates my pc REQUIRES.

Plus, the links are "HARDCODED" into the def files, and as such, require the user to re-download them should they be changed on Microsoft's end.

BootBlock

BootBlock reviewed v2.21 Beta Build 256 on Aug 16, 2006

Like VictorAnderson says, it seems the program comes with .ui files that contain links to the updates but there is no way of automatically updating them. It's a shame that the author doesn't have a forum for this (he doesn't even acknowledge his software on his site at all as far as I can tell) as I would like to contribute to it in some way (interface updates; downloading of .ui file updates; etc) as I'm also a .NET developer. I've given this a 3 as it has so much potential but unfortunately it isn't being realised.

VictorAnderson

VictorAnderson reviewed v2.21 Beta Build 256 on Aug 16, 2006

Neat idea, but it looks like all the updates are actually hardcoded in the thing, so each time MS comes out with another updates, the author is going to have to update this program and everyone is going to have to grab it again. (or at least the .ui files shipped with it)

What would be neat would be if the author could write a webservice that would let us check for updates.....
