Publisher's Description
ZipGenius has all the main features of compression programs (zip, unzip and so on), but it's different from the others because it offers very special features. You can give better protection to your archives using encryption instead of the standard zip password, you can send e-mail using the built-in mail client or you can publish archives on the Web with FTPGenius, the built-in FTP client.

While at home I use IZArc, I tried to install ZipGenius at work because it looked visually nicer than IZarc. Yet, I found that it has bugs and limitations that make it inferior to IZArc. I thus switched to IZArc also at work. Both are freeware.
Lack of complete Support for Unicode is one of the major problems of this software.

I have used ZipGenius for about 4 years and never looked back It is a great, free utility. It can compress and unzip almost any archive format.
After comparing many different free and commercial zip utilities, one feature stood out. I really appreciate the ability to automatically scan downloaded files with your antivirus software before committing to unzip and extract them. Users of FileForum might find this feature particularly useful -- you can be exposed to a lot of malware when trying free software.

Great program love the self extracting zip files. Win Zip doesn't have it.

I find nothing special about this archiver. 7-Zip and IZArc blow it out of the water. It's huge, (18mb compared to 3mb for 7-Zip) It doesn't unarchive ISO or IMG files, it's not really portable. I do like the Explorer extensions, but that's about all.

I discovered ZipGenius on File Forum when looking for a replacement for WinZip. That was in about 2005. Going into 2008, this is still a great free program.

Nice multi-archive tool. Not bad for a free utility. Had a lot of features, and works with all of the major archive types.
I found this, when looking for a freeware archive uncompress tool for a friend that needed one.

__Fixed security flaw in UU/XX/MIME Base64 encoded archives when extracting extremely long filenames (program aborts extraction and fires a warning message).

Matteo is definitely a class act, as is ZipGenius. But be sure to download the Suite version as it includes the cutter tool and other features. It was reviewed this week along with other archivers here.
DACWILSOL reviewed v6.0.2.1040 on Jul 23, 2005
I have been using ZipGenius for sometime and it is a great program. Compared to other programs like WinZip and WinRar, ZipGenius is equally good. The program is free and it performs equally or better than its paid for counter parts.
yokozuna reviewed v6.0.2.1040 on Jul 23, 2005
Pretty nice tool. Unfortunately, it is not bug free but I can understand it. It should contain at least one skin which is NOT eye candy. Some users demand functionality rather than something what can impress teenage girls.
Blaxima reviewed v6.0.2.1030A on Jul 5, 2005
Nice attempt with some neat features but in the end its just bloated and buggy. Winrar is still easilly the best compression utility.

Violation errors make it hard to work with .. I'll be back when it is fixed . I support the porgram but i need a working zip utility ..

bobad: I may be wrong, but I think the RAR format is proprietary.
I have used this program for some time now... for me it gets the job done, and at the right price ;) The one occasion I have had to ask Matteo for assistance, his response was quick, helpful and courteous. A lot of paid-software companies should learn from his example.
WickedLester reviewed v6 Beta 5 on Dec 20, 2004
There are a few good compression utilities out there that are free and this in one of them. The icons could be improved a little to make it look a little better but otherwise I would use this over Winzip or WinRar.

Nice program. There are so many features you can barely get your arms around the program. This is not really a good thing. Instead of adding fluff and bloating the program up to almost 10MB, I think the author should concentrate on such basics as the ability to create RAR archives. Having said that, I like ZipGenius better than all the other Freeware archivers except IZArc.
slimshady165000 reviewed v6 Beta 5 on Dec 20, 2004
Give Matteo some credit....pretty much ZipGenius is a 1-man show.
I'm gonna start helping Matteo with graphics/layout/ect. (everything that doesn't have to do with coding) :p I already submitted some new context menu icons to him....it should be in the final release

Using Zip Genius a long time and it's great for
a freeware.
hunterb reviewed v6 Beta 3 on Oct 10, 2004
Pros: Free, Powerful
Cons: Large footprint, buggy, bit slower than PowerArchive/WinZip
I get the same fatal errors with 6.0beta3 that i have with 5.5. Then there is the usual beta version bugs.
I find PowerArchiver is more compact, faster, better on memory… but shareware :(
For a free app, it is very good - if not for the major bug I seem to have (runtime error with the explorer integration).
zatoichi reviewed v6 Beta 3 on Oct 5, 2004
This is a great freeware archiving application. I used Powerarchiver until it went shareware and have liked ZG since switching. I am glad the developer brought back different file icons for differenct file formats. A nice touch.

Buggy, bloated, and poorly designed. And yes, the uninstall sucks.

Hi,
Have a look at AlphaZip
http://www.alphazip.com
This is what I call Windows (XP) integration.
This is what I have looking for since ages.
This is what I buy !

Good program, unfortunately Scodan did not mention whether the program worked good or not, he just didn't like the uninstall. These people should be banned from Betanews.
slimshady165000 reviewed v5.5.1.440 on Jun 11, 2004
I guess so. I haven't had any problems since that 5.5 beta 1 review. I'm testing the ZG 6 betas....it's gonna be the best ever!
The comment by slimshady165000 is strange... If you have a car that breaks down over and over, wouldn't you "badmouth" it? But could you make a better car? Is the point clear?
kandjar reviewed v5.5 Beta 1 on Feb 26, 2004
Great tools !! I use it since a while now, it still have some bugs, but nothing important !
slimshady165000 reviewed v5.5 Beta 1 on Dec 2, 2003
Good program. I don't see a reason why it chews up 15MB for every window that it opens. And for everyone who is badmouthing this: I want to see you make a better program
scodan reviewed v5.2.0.201 on Oct 21, 2003
Well, well... I just found out that ZipRetard left 6 font files, some program files, and a bunch of registry clutter leftover after the (loosely-termed) "uninstall". Typical.
kandjar reviewed v5 RC1 on Mar 26, 2003
Excellent Great !!! No way, this is probably the best zip tool.. Full of great tool ! Like the folder view... ! FREE... MUCH BETTER THAN WINZIP !!! (Yes that true !). This only point which is (apparently) better in WinZip, is the time needed opening an archive. WinZip is a little bit faster. BUT it's ridiculous compare to all the features given with ZipGenius !!
JEdwardP reviewed v1.4.3.1294 on Nov 27, 2002
I tried this just because I'm always looking for better programs, but I didn't expect to switch to it from QuickZip. My expectations went awry once I tried it though.
It's interface is fairly clean and very intuitive (choose "expert" mode if you hate wizards). It handles files quickly, and supports more than enough archive formats for my uses. Just two notes of caution: To avoid bloat, be sure to download the STANDARD edition, not the suite. And, this build didn't properly register file associations on my system (XP Home, SP1); I had to manually set them from Windows Explorer's folder options|file types. After that, all is well.
isaacg reviewed v1.4.3.1294 on Oct 23, 2002
Too large, complicated and bloated for my tastes. Also didn't uninstall properly, leaving lots of stuff in my right click menus.
